Stephania Bell (3:02 PM)
Hello everyone and Happy Election Day! Hope you have all exercised your rights. Plenty of injuries in the aftermath of Week 9, so let's see how those are affecting your team...
Not Happy (Gas Line)
Is Donald Brown too risky of a play for Thursday?
Stephania Bell (3:04 PM)
Sorry you're in a gas line...thoughts going out to all dealing with the challenges post-Sandy...And yes, I would think so. He left the game b/c of soreness and swelling in his knee, which was the reason for the initial downgrade. Hard to imagine it's "safe" in 4 days, although if he rests, they might activate him. If he's active would only expect limited work.
Mike V (Chicago)
I heard that Donald Brown had swelling in his knee then I heard he had a hip issue. Which was it and can I expect him to be recovered by Thursday?
Stephania Bell (3:04 PM)
Mike V; Just a follow-up. THere was a report of hip but later confirmed it was his knee.
Aaron Hernandez... Help!!
Stephania Bell (3:06 PM)
ak: Well, wish I could give you great news but wasn't in pads portion of practice today per media reports. Not sure that it's enough to make me panic, may just be caution early week but if you got someone to fill in for him during bye week, I'd be holding on.
What is the latest status of Darren McFadden? Howe about Mike Goodson? Last I heard both had high ankle sprains. Do either seem likely to play this week / next week / rest of season? Thank you.
Stephania Bell (3:08 PM)
Marcel: Both do have high ankle sprains but like with any injury, the severity of each can impact how long they're out. McFadden apparently not yet ruled out for Week 10 and there were reports of him trying to re-enter the game. Still, after wht happened last year, I'm not altogether trusting of an early week Raider injury report (despite the coaching change).
Hi Steph - I have Charles & DMAC - what to do? Thnaks
Stephania Bell (3:10 PM)
Bryce: As said re: DMC, not much to go on yet. Be prepared for the possibility of going without him. Charles tweeted that he plans to play Monday night. Of course, since it's a Monday night game the team won't have an official practice report until THursday. But he tweeted that early which hints at him being able to go.
percy....does he play or no?
Stephania Bell (3:12 PM)
Mike: Highly, highly doubt it, despite him saying he still wants to try. He has a very swollen ankle, was on crutches, pain. Very, very tough to get swelling down and be functional enough to play by SUnday. And the Vikes have a bye the following week. That won't be the only criteria but it certainly makes it easier to imagine him sitting.
Hi Stephania, I know we wont here too much with bye week but are there any reports on Jordy Nelson's ankle/ hamstring? Thanks I appreciate it.
Stephania Bell (3:14 PM)
Cedric: Actually, McCarthy certainly hinted that he thought he expected Nelson back after the bye so doesn't sound like ankle was that serious. They may have decided once he injured his ankle on top of the already delicate hamstring that they were going to call it a day for him, not risk anything further, even if the ankle injury wasn't that bad.
When will I see breaking news Demarco Murray out for the year? I mean seriously! Another week!?
Stephania Bell (3:16 PM)
Jon: Don't expect that to be the case. It's only been three weeks. Foot injuries are more difficult to recover from than people think, especially tough for RB and WR. The fact he was on crutches and a boot afterward tell us it was more than minor. Multiple weeks (on the order of 4-6) not unusual for these. So, I think he'll be back. It just won't be this week.
Ms. Stephania Bell - It looks like I may have prematurely dropped Sproles when they said he was likely out 4-6 weeks. Now the latest news is he may only miss 2!!!! What's the deal?
Stephania Bell (3:20 PM)
Drew: Well, who could blame you? That's what they said initially. It's not that they were "lying" about the timeframe as that is the standard for fractures to heal. But the surgery to put the pins in stabilizes the bone and allows you to get a little more aggressive. Apparently he is tough and they think/hope that he can beat the timetable along the order of McGahee who made it back in 2 weeks. All depends on how he's able to use the hand.
Hi Stephania, I'm looking for any info. about ALSHON JEFFERY and the recent DONNIE AVERY injury. Thank You.
Stephania Bell (3:22 PM)
Christine: Jeffery likely out again one more week although making improvement. It looks like he'll be back by Week 11 (assuming he misses this week) He did not have surgery and they have no doubt been waiting on satisfactory bone healing. Avery is practicing today which is a good sign that he'll be a go on Thurs night.
Still no time-frame for return on MJD's injury?
Stephania Bell (3:25 PM)
Reuben: Nope. They have not offered one and we know his injury was significant in that it was being evaluated by specialist to determine whether it was surgical or not. They decided no surgery but still will be slow to heal (and like some of these other foot injuries, think on the order of more than four weeks). Until we see him walking around without a boot can't even begin to think of returning to practice.
Hello Ms. Bell - Any word on Antonio Brown?
Stephania Bell (3:25 PM)
Joe: Calling his injury a mild high ankle sprain but still sounds like Steelers do not expect to have him for their next game.
Stephania: f.Jones injury report after week 9? non ppr avoid him at flex vs. Philly?
Stephania Bell (3:26 PM)
Kendall: Nothing new. At least not yet. Just no confidence in him but he's still likely to be the starter. I'd try to find other options depending on your choices.
James (A Giant Peach)
Dez and Stevie.. who's injury concerns you more and would you sit either for Britt? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:28 PM)
James: Right now, neither is overly concerning. Bryant obviously played so I expect him to do so again. S Johnson had a thigh bruise which makes it very difficult to run (why he struggled in the game and eventually came out) but with rest and treatment early in the week, I'd expect him to be able to play. Would be nice to know he's runing full speed by the end of the week though.
Im a redman owner looking for an update on the rest of the PIT backfield?
Stephania Bell (3:30 PM)
Jay: Well, it continues to be a carousel of running backs. Right now sounds like they expect Dwyer back this week. Not sure Mendenhall will be. Redman seems to have come out of his big game just fine. Rainey is banged up. Imagine it's Dwyer and Redman but unclear who will get the start.
Amendola? I know your Niners hit HARD, but i'd still like to know if he'll be a full go this week.
Stephania Bell (3:33 PM)
Jay: Well, they do. But Amendola isists he's back this week. Certainly the fact he was catching some balls in practice prior to Week 8 is a strong sign and the extra time without contact only helps the healing. We really won't know that he's "fine" until he makes one of those diving catches and lands on that right shoulder hard, then gets up with no problem. Naturally carries some risk when he first returns as a result. But the big thing is whether the team is comfortable putting him out on the field. If he practices through the week, I expect he will play.
Concerned Cheese Head (Green Bay)
James Starks? Is he fully recoved and now the #1 RB or do you see it a time-share in Green Bay? Thanks Stephania
Stephania Bell (3:34 PM)
Concerned: Sounds like the turf toe is no longer an issue. Whether he is the official number one or they try to continue to mix it up with him and Green is unclear.
Jacob (Ohio )
Greg Jennings or Calvin Johnson Updates?
Stephania Bell (3:36 PM)
Jacob: Johnson came out of the game OK. Schwartz talked about how they managed him in the game to try to protect his knee. Johnson expects it to be an ongoing management thing but if he can play as he did last week than that would be ok. Nothing big to report on Jennings. Imagine team won't say much until he begins running and/or returns to practice.
Any news on Owen Daniels? Saw he had a bruised thigh from Sunday's game?
Stephania Bell (3:37 PM)
Ron: Yes, but sounds like not a huge concern. Similar to S Johnson and expect him to be limited early in the week, pushing it as week progresses.
Pete (Minn, Mn)
Hello StephaniaCongrats in Pigskin Pick'em. Any news on Sproles. It seems strange to compare him to McGahee with so many bones in the hands and McGahee only had 11 catches last year
Stephania Bell (3:40 PM)
Pete: But it's a very comparable injury and procedure. WHen teams reference a "hand" fracture, it usually means metacarpal, otherwise they're talking fingers or wrist. So, it's not really that wide of a range. Slight difference depending on complexity of fracture, which number MC it is, but generally speaking, ok to compare. And I have said the difference for Sproles is how they rely on him as a pass catcher. Even if he takes a week longer than McGahee, he still beats the timetable the Saints originally laid out. And there's no guarantee the he does beat it! Just saying the Saints seem to think that he will...and that it could be possible.
James (Polling Place)
Hello, It's a Nice Day for Voting! Vincent Brown news has been elusive; Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks Stephania.
Stephania Bell (3:42 PM)
Hi James: Yes! Get out and vote everyone. I think the news on Brown was discouraging last week (no timetable for him to return to practice) and the earliest seems to be potentially December. Maybe. RIght now there's not enough info on him to make him worth a stash. If we hear that he starts running and looks like he could be working his way back to practice, then might be something to consider then.
Stephania.. A week with no Murray and now no Antonio Brown - do I go with Daniel Thomas as a flex or start scanning the waiver wire?
Stephania Bell (3:45 PM)
Duane: Might as well look at one of the Oakland potential fill-ins if DMC and Goodson out. That would be Marcel Reese and Taiwan Jones. THere seems to be some disagreement as to who would be the better pickup amongst our experts but I'd prob go Reece.
Any word on Beanie Wells, is he actually coming back anytime soon and do you think he'd be worth an add simply because he'll get the touches, not that he's necessarily, you know... good... a Felix Jones type?
Stephania Bell (3:48 PM)
Graham: Well, to hear him tell it, he's "definitely" coming back when eligible (Wk 12). He's able to start practicing with team this week and I'd want to see how he looks - and of course how he tolerates practice - before I had confidence that he's doing as well as he says. You expect him to get the bulk of the touches if he's playing unrestricted...but with his history I don't have a ton of confidence, especially sight unseen.
Stephania,With all these injuries, you are just making your best "guess" as to how long they will be out for or whether or not they will be playing. These players aren't right in front of you so you really can't say for sure. Please people, don't think she is an expert because there are several thousands of athletic trainers that could do the same thing if given the chance.
Stephania Bell (3:51 PM)
The obligatory angry post. I think everyone knows that all of these players did not line up in front of me this week. The information is based on reports, including sources I talk with and my own experience treating athletes with similar injuries. Full disclosure. And anyone is welcome to have an opinion somewhere, including Jon.
Heard Hernandez missed today due to the birth of a child.
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
Jimmy: Yes, it's being reported that Hernandez had a baby (well, he didn't HAVE it, but you get the idea...). Remember early on there was speculation that this might have been what kept him from traveling with the team to London. Turns out that was not the case then but it seems to be the case this time. So we'll see if he's in the mix tomorrow.
Updates on Wright and M. Bennett please...thanks
Stephania Bell (3:57 PM)
LittleRon: I haven't been able to find out any specifics on Bennett since he was limping late. He did have a knee issue earlier this season and I wonder if this is an aggravation of that injury. Nothing official out of Giants which means we may not hear anything until Weds practice. Tom COughlin usually pretty good about updating player status.Wright had X-rays on right elbow but they were apparently negative and the Titans say they expect to have him this week.
I'd like to apologize for Massachusetts, we're not all that mean. What's your thoughts on Cedric Benson coming back, as he is designated to return.
Stephania Bell (4:00 PM)
Sam: I was born in Boston, love MA, so no worries. As for Benson, he has been making some good progress with the rehab on his foot. He is still over a week away from being eligible to return to practice (remember GB used the designation of IR/des for return) so he is off the radar of being eligible to play until Week 13. But from what we can gather as far as his activity, he's progressing as they hoped.
Stephania Bell (4:02 PM)
Devin: I saw your posts but if you've already made the trade, not sure why my opinion matters... I think Luck will be just fine and your other two pickups I think are better than what you had.Everyone: thanks so much for coming to the chat. Lots of injuries to update throughout the week so stay tuned...
Stephania Bell (4:03 PM)
And a final thank you to Brian in Mechanicsburg, PA...much appreciated.
