Craig (3:01 PM)
Welcome -- Glad you could join me - looking forward to talking some recruiting with you all. Updated ESPN 150/300 released today. Lots of changes - I will try & get to as many of your questions as possible. Lets get started
Ryan (Birmingham, AL)
Why is Oj Howard ranked so low? I feel like the TE tag has a lot to do with it. I see Howard as a hybrid Ozzie Newsome/Shanon Sharpe type. These are two of the best receivers to ever play the game. How is he different then Ricky Seals Jones who sits at 13?
Craig (3:07 PM)
Hey Ryan - was going to get to your tweet after the chat but glad you jumped on. really like OJ he is an impressive athlete - I think he can be a wonderful fit for Alabama in that H-Back role. To be honest - top 50 is a pretty fair rating for a TE.
Craig (3:09 PM)
That being said he could still move up before all is said & done. He has performed well when seen at camp settings, but looking forward to seeing him all week at the Under Armour Game. I think he will do very well but want to see him compete all week with the best-of-the-best.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Craig, the Sooners need help "big time" at defensive tackle. Do you think Stoops will land at least one of the top two prospects on his wish list (Manning, Gilmore)?
Craig (3:10 PM)
Tony, Dont think Greg Gilmore is likely. Looks to be a LSU/Florida battle. He will announce tomorrow on Recruiting Nation on ESPNU - so tune in to see, but I wouldn't get my hopes up if I was you on that one.
Craig (3:12 PM)
I wouldn't discount Texas A&M, but do think they have a very good shot with Justin Manning. would be a little surprised if they didn't get him.
What does Notre Dame need to focus on in the next few classes?
Craig (3:14 PM)
I think more immediate - the secondary. Which they have addressed some with Devin Butler & more recently Cole Luke. More long term - the trenches. Think big reason ND making strides on the field is that the play in the trenches has gotten much better
Who are some lower-ranked players who we should watch for who really caught your eye?
Craig (3:17 PM)
One prospect who didn't enter the 300 but did move up to 4-star is LB Johnny Ragin out of Oregon. We liked what we saw from his senior film, good looking prospect who I think is flying a little under the radar
What are some NCAA programs that are on the rise because of their recruiting classes?
Craig (3:19 PM)
With that question - Good time to remind you that updated class rankings coming out at the end of the week. Also class rankings will EXPAND to top 40 - so stay tuned for details on that & check it out.
Craig (3:21 PM)
To answer your question - Vandy has been doing a good job of recruiting trail since Franklin took over. Would add Mississippi State in that mix as well.
Why did Reuben Foster move down 22 spots and drop from a 5 star to a 4? Haven't been following him much this season, only saw his junior highlights
Craig (3:25 PM)
The young man is capable of being a very good down hill run stuffing presence & he is capable of dishing out some punishment as a tackler, but reason for the drop is we need to see more consistency, to be the #2 player
Craig (3:26 PM)
We have studied him quite a bit & to give you an example if you saw his game on TV against Carver - he did not play up to the ability he has flashed on film. Struggled to defend the run something he has flashed he can be dominant at. In addition we had
Craig (3:28 PM)
Still a very good prospect & look forward to seeing him down in Orlando
Jared (Massachusetts )
Why did Shane Morris go down so much?
Craig (3:31 PM)
I know he missed some time as he was sick & it really didn't have anything to do with that. He has a lot of natural tools, but needs to be a more consistent - He can make some big throws, but has shown he can be inconsistent as a passer as well.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Which prospect has skyrocketed/surprised you the most in your 2013 rankings?
Craig (3:34 PM)
One guy is DE Chris Jones - Miss St verbal - He has really grown his senior year as a player. Great raw tools, but becoming a better player as well & we were really impressed with not only his upside, but the strides he has made so far as well. A guy who jumped up big into the 300
Ezekiel Elliott has been flying up the ranks. What attributes does he have that will take him to the next level for Ohio State?
Craig (3:37 PM)
Elliott is a guy who has impressed us every time we see him & he was a new entry into the 150. What he brings to Ohio State - he is a runner who can carry the load, but also a well rounded player - have been impressed with his hands
Do you think Carl Lawson will ever jump Robert
Craig (3:40 PM)
Time will tell, but to be honest with you I think it will be tough. I have been a big fan of Carl's ever since I first flipped on his film. He is an excellent DE prospect. Robert though has continued to show he deserves to be the #1 overall player - He has tools to be a special player.
Craig (3:41 PM)
Both great prospects & cant wait to see those guys compete head-2-head all week at the under Armour game. Will be great to see
Chris (Ann Arbor)
Any exciting RBs moving up?
Craig (3:43 PM)
Alex Collins - who made some news today for decommitting from Miami - is a guy who made a nice jump up from 300 to 150.
Craig (3:45 PM)
As far as the RB's - no 5-stars, but I really like this RB class. Those top 6/7 guys all bring some great qualities to the table & you could make good arguments that one or the other could potentially be higher than another one. Bottom line, Taylor, Bryant, Green, etc. all very good - I really like that group
Bama has 2 RB commits in Tenpenny and Jones, so who do you think has the edge of those 2? Also, where do you think Derrick Henry will play for the Tide?
Craig (3:48 PM)
All three very good - bring something different tools to the table. I have been impressed with Tyren Jones - Think he is a very nice fit for that offense - a load carrying back - who also blocks well & can catch. Great burst through the hole -- maybe not elite top end speed, but acceleration is excellent
Craig (3:49 PM)
As far as Henry - I have said it before & will say it again. I think with his skill set he can be best utilized
Craig , why doesnt espn 150 qb Zach Greenlee have more offers after doing so well in the elite 11....by the way he only has one offer to this point..
Craig (3:51 PM)
I know - I am with you Pete - he has been one of those guys that has puzzled me. Did well at Elite 11, but also beyond that looks good on film as well. I think he is very under rated & was a great pick-up for Fresno State - they may have gotten a real steal
gut instincts.... whare does l.treadwell end up??
Craig (3:55 PM)
Have gotten a few Treadwell Questions so will take yours Hector & hopefully answer others as well at the same time
Are the 2 Top150 recruits going to stay with PSU?
Craig (3:59 PM)
At this point looks that way. I would be shocked if they lost Adam Breneman & as long as he is committed i think they have a good shot to hold onto Hackenberg as well, but we will see what happens with him - I am not using the word shocked there - If you are a Penn State fan You have to be happy with the job O'Brien has done on the field
A lot of people thought Ira Denson would get bumped up. What are your thought's on him?
Craig (4:02 PM)
Really like him. He needs to watch pad level, but has shown improvement & He is a big strong powerful kid - That OG race is tight - so he is a guy to watch in the next update - certainly a candidate to potentially still move up.
Derrin (Plano, TX)
Does Oklahoma have any immediate impact defensive players in their 2013 class?
Craig (4:06 PM)
Impact may be a stronger word than I would use but I do think they got some guys in this defensive class who could contribute as true freshman. One would be LB Jordan Mastrogiovanni - Tough run defender.
Craig (4:08 PM)
Well its that time. I got to go. Thanks to all of you for stopping by. Some great questions today - thanks!. If you have more or i didn't get to yours - feel free to hit me up on twitter & i'll try
