If you were the Jags would you look to replace Gabbert after this year?
Mel Kiper (1:05 PM)
Well he's hurt right now but I think the Jags have other issues outside the QB position. They have trouble scoring and stopping other teams from scoring. Gabbert is a young QB that showed promise before he got injured. It's a shame because the injury stunts his growth a bit and we can't really evaluate him the way we need to.
Good Monring Mel,Kenen Lewis looks to be a long term starter(maybe biased) what was and is your opinon of him?
Mel Kiper (1:06 PM)
Lewis does look good and has played to the level of a starter. But he is helped out by the Steelers front line. When the pass rush improves, that helps out the corners out tremendously but I do think the Steelers do need another corner.
Mike (Tampa FLorida)
On Raw Talent alone who do you like more Dez,AJ Green, Julio?
Mel Kiper (1:08 PM)
I'd say Green, Jones then Bryant. Jones has a good QB in Ryan and Green in Dalton. Bryan needs to play a little more attention to detail but he's coming along.
Mel, why does a Von Miller succeed whereas two other highly touted OLB's in Curry and Maybin flame out? Which of the three had your highest grade? Thanks-
Mel Kiper (1:10 PM)
A lot of it has to do with his natural ability. There's also a big jump from college and NFL, some can make it on the next level and some can't.
Do you think Ware, Spencer,Lee, and Carter can be the best linebacking core in football?
Mel Kiper (1:11 PM)
I don't know if they are the best LB group, but they are a good group. I do think there are better linebacking cores out there.
Is Brandon Weeden the answer in Cleveland? Joe Banner said the 2 most important jobs you have to get right in today's NFL are QB and head coach. I agree.
Mel Kiper (1:14 PM)
Still to be determined. He's shown flashes but he needs to be more accurate and make better decisions. He can't miss open receivers like he did against the Cowboys. He's 29 years old so there's not a big window for improvement there. He has the size and toughness, but he needs to show improvement. RGIII and Luck are rookies that haven't played like rookies, as Weeden is a rookie that's played like a rookie.
Tavon Austin - a faster version of Randall Cobb?
Mel Kiper (1:15 PM)
He's really good. He's a 4.3-4.5 guys but we'll see more at the combine. He's a great player at UWV and looks to be good at the next level too.
Mel, I think Markus Wheaton is a heck of a WR, do you see him being a quality WR at the NFL level?
Mel Kiper (1:17 PM)
Yes, he's had a very good year. Brandon Cooks is on the other side and has also been a standout at WR. Those two are an outstanding duo, maybe the best in college. Right now Wheaton is my fourth highest rated WR on my big board.
Nick (HD) [via mobile]
If Ponder , Gabbert and Tanehill went top 10 Barkley has to right? Right?
Mel Kiper (1:19 PM)
Based on the way he's played this year, I think he will go between 20 and 40. I think his stock has dropped this year and he hasn't played as well as he did last season. And now he's hurt and won't play against Notre Dame. He could have been in the top 4 or 5 last season but he chose to go back for another season and now he's considered to be a late first round pick.
Mike (Belvidere, IL )
Does Denard Robinson have an NFL comparison? Cribbs? Hester?
Mel Kiper (1:21 PM)
I think Cribbs or Antwaan Randle El. He will have a chance to play in the NFL maybe even a second round draft pick. He has a lot of versatility. We know he can run with the football but he has to prove that he can catch the ball at the Senior Bowl and even at the combine next year.
Jeff (Los Angeles)
Mel, what players from UCLA are on NFL scouts radar?
Mel Kiper (1:24 PM)
The top player would be Anthony Barr. He's a great athlete with play-making ability. You also have Johnathan Franklin, Joseph Fauria, Jeff Locke and Datone Jones. If I had to rank them it would be Barr, Jones then Franklin.
Drew (Green Bay, WI)
The Packers need a C and there aren't many. What OG's could transition to C?
Mel Kiper (1:26 PM)
The Khaled Holmes from USC Barrett Jones and from Alabama are the top senior centers and Travis Frederick from Wisconsin is the top junior. I'd rank Frederick above both Holmes and Jones.
What are your thoughts on Rutgers and Maryland going to the B1G?
Mel Kiper (1:30 PM)
I'm not a fan of teams changing conferences. You need a scorecard to keep up. It's like back in the old days when the Baltimore Colts were in the AFC West. I don't like the way college football and college athletics in general have gone, chasing the almighty dollar. All the changes just don't make any sense. There's no identify anymore. It's just a shame.
Does Devin Gardner have a future as a QB in the NFL?
Mel Kiper (1:31 PM)
He's a QB turned WR and he's back to being a QB. He has the size teams look for in a QB that Denard Robinson doesn't. He's duel threat and with Robinson moving on to the NFL next season, Michigan will be Gardner's team.
What is your opinion on Aaron Murray? Should he declare for the draft or stay another year?
Mel Kiper (1:32 PM)
I'd say stay another year. He has a good arm but not the size. He's not a first round pick and my thoughts are if you're not a first rounder then you should go back to school for another year.
Abe (Kansas City)
What QBs have 1st round talent?
Mel Kiper (1:35 PM)
Matt Barkley, Geno Smith, Mike Glennon, Tyler Wilson, Logan Thomas are to be in the first round discussion. Though I'm not saying all are first round picks. Thomas is the most impressive of the bunch and he's only a junior. There are a bunch of guys that will be evaluated but these are the creme of the crop.
Smith or Kaepernick?
Mel Kiper (1:38 PM)
I'd stay with Kaepernick. Harbaugh said he wants to ride with the hot hand and to me that would be Kaepernick. He missed a couple of open receivers in the game against the Bears but he's big, with a strong arm and I think he's the guy for the 49ers. And if you go with him now and he struggles, the Niners can always go back to Smith. I'd rather have him sink or swim now rather than sitting him now and if you need him in the playoff have him be rusty.
Garry (Rittenberg, KS)
Is there any chance Andy Reid can keep his job after this season??
Mel Kiper (1:42 PM)
I would say probably not. They would need to turn the page and start fresh in order from him to keep his job in Philadelphia. It's the second straight year with a talented team that didn't achieve. I do know that if he is let go, he would land on his feet almost immediately, I know I would want him on my team.
Mel Kiper (1:44 PM)
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Safe travels as you travel across the country to various destinations. It should be a good day and weekend of football action, so enjoy. Talk to you next week.
