Adam (Ann Arbor)
Which player makes the biggest leap this year from their freshmen year to sophomore year? Offense and defense?
Sean Adams (12:10 PM)
I think Malcom Brown makes the biggest leap among the freshmen, and Duke Thomas could see a lot more action with Diggs doing work at safety.
Is there any question as to whether Jeffcoat will be 100% for spring ball? If not spring, then by August?
Sean Adams (12:13 PM)
I don't think he will be 100 percent in the spring, and they shouldn't risk him going 100 percent even if they think he is. He'll be good to go in the fall, and he'll have a great year.
I noticed you were on Longhorn Extra while watching this morning. What will be your role and is this something new?
Sean Adams (12:17 PM)
Ha ha! I have no role on the Longhorn Network. I am lucky enough that they let me get on there and chop it up about Texas and college football. For a guy with no chin, a broken nose and no eyebrows, I'm as happy as I can be and I'm learning a ton. Hopefully it'll grow into doing more.
How will the tackling/shedding blocks issues be addressed this spring? Any changes in philosophy on coaching these things?
Sean Adams (12:22 PM)
I don't think this is about a change in philosophy as much as it is paying attention to details and experience. The linebacker group struggled to shed blocks because they spent most of their time thinking about their assignments. It is a commitment to doing EVERYTHING the right way.
Who do you see Texas finishing with recruiting-wise? Will Applewhite make spring works/ball as uncomfortable as he wants it to be?
Sean Adams (12:28 PM)
Texas will finish well with its recruiting class. They always do. It really only matters what they do with the recruits once they get on campus. Look at all of the schools in the Top 10 that don't recruit in the Top 10. Coaching matters. Applewhite will make this team uncomfortable. I believe that. The team also probably understands how being uncomfortable and finding success anyway is good for them in the long term.
Who do you think our 3 first-string LBs are going into spring ball?
Sean Adams (12:30 PM)
Now that is a tough question because it doesn't matter who starts the spring. Thompson, Jackson and Edmund will probably be the first three out with the first team.
Jeff (Deer Park)
When you breakdown the poor defensive performance of Texas over the first part of the season, what percentage of the blame goes to using aggressive, high-risk defensive schemes vs. poor performance (bad tackling, pursuit angles) by talented but inexperienced players? What were the main adjustments made to get the improved defensive performance over the last part of the season?
Sean Adams (12:37 PM)
Without going into the percentages, I think it was all of everything. The defense was high risk and high reward. There is a reason why they led the Big 12 in tackles for loss but also gave up a ton of big plays and 70 percent of fourth-down conversions. Feast or famine. They need to find a middle ground this spring. Maybe be aggressive but run more of a cover-two behind.
Over/under: 50 Rec, 1,200 yds, 10 TDs next season for Magic Mike Davis?
Sean Adams (12:40 PM)
Over on the receptions (he had 57 receptions this year), under on the yards, and the TDs are about right.
Green Bay Packers Scout (Lambeau)
I'm disappointed Mike Davis returned to Texas. I was sure we had a steal in the fouth or fifth round to replace Greg Jennings. Given another year in the strength program and to improve along with David Ash, I see Davis being a second-round pick next season. Thoughts?
Sean Adams (12:43 PM)
I can see that happening. The unknown with Mike is that he never was asked to be a burner down the field, so I would be interested to see just how fast he runs. Coming back will allow him show more consistency with his hands.
Larry Porter was a name that caught me off guard, as I hadn't really heard of him before. But after reading about his past and seeing the work he's already putting into the recruiting trail, I think Texas hit a grand slam. Any chance he can get Leonard Fournette on campus and to seriously consider the Horns?
Sean Adams (12:45 PM)
He is a win on the coaching front. He knows how to recruit, knows the region and knows the Big 12. He will bring some passion to practice and to the sideline.
Buy or Sell David Ash as the quarterback who will get Texas to a BCS this next season? I'm a strong buy that he will play well enough, but the O-line and defense need to step up.
Sean Adams (12:48 PM)
I'll buy, but only because he is the best option on campus. I like him but he has to improve his play in big games and big situations and grow as a leader. Texas is a place that demands that the QB be a leader and a dynamic one in order to have a special season. I'll never back off that statement.
2013 season: Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?
Sean Adams (12:49 PM)
I know this is a down time of the year for me. I'm glad spring practice and recruiting means so much in Texas.
If charges against Hicks/McCoy are never filed, will they face any punishment from UT? Do you think McCoy transfers regardless?
Sean Adams (12:56 PM)
Yes they will still be punished by Texas, and they should be. They were still out past curfew. Both of these guys are smart and are leaders, so they understand that they made a huge mistake or a series of them. I have no idea on what they will do for the remainder of their career. As far I anyone knows, they are student-athletes at the University of Texas.
Manuel (Dallas, TX)
Do you think UT quarterbacks will become log-jammed? Who do you think will be the surprise standout if any?
Sean Adams (1:00 PM)
I really want to see what Jalen Overstreet can do. You see him doing something as simple as warming up and the ball jumps out of his hand, and he has tremendous talent. Ash is still the leader in the clubhouse, and he should be. It would be beyond silly to have anyone but him being the No. 1 QB in the spring. There are a lot of QBs, but Swoopes needs some time to manage through his tremendous talent and see what they have at QB.
Do you think Manny Diaz will right the ship this year on defense? Also, are you surprised Texas decided to stay with him?
Sean Adams (1:02 PM)
Knowing Mack Brown the way I feel like I do, I'm not surprised. I probably would have hired him some help because he is going to be good, I believe that. Maybe Mack hired him a few years early. Bill Young parted ways with Oklahoma State yesterday. He could be a huge help to a guy like Diaz. I do think Diaz is a lot better in 2013.
Is there anything to be optimistic about with the O-line heading into next season?
Sean Adams (1:05 PM)
Dude, you and I are on really different pages. I think the OL will be a strength. They had some issues in the middle of the offensive line this year, but they are getting better, stronger, bigger and deeper. If you are looking for optimism -- you will be shocked by next year's OL.
With Ash returning as the most experienced QB in the Big 12, do you see this Texas team finally turning the corner and either A) winning the conference or B) achieving BCS bowl status?
Sean Adams (1:06 PM)
Is would not shock me if either took place. The powers that be in the Big 12 all have a rebuilding job to do. In fact if I had to call it right now, the conference will come down to TCU and Texas.
What type of offense do you expect to see next year? We saw more of the spread in the Alamo Bowl. Is that a sign of things to come or was it simply a case of being behind late in the game?
Sean Adams (1:07 PM)
I think we will see much of the same. Just expect Applewhite to be more aggressive getting the ball down the field.
Adam (Sioux Falls)
So what exactly happened with the whole Mike Davis situation yesterday? It was reported by J. Schad who's usually always right!
Sean Adams (1:10 PM)
He actually reached out to Schad but had done so apparently without conversations with the folks at Texas. I'm sure they all got their heads together and took the NFL information they had, tried to match it with the wishes of Davis and his family, and he decided to return for his senior year.
Should we stop paying attention to this year's basketball team and just get ready for what should be a talented and more experienced 2013-14 team? Seems like inconsistency this year is going to dash any hopes.
Sean Adams (1:11 PM)
This team is not very good, and I don't know if a returning star late in the year can get them there. If you like Texas support the team, just know where they are as a program.
Zeb (san marcos)
Could we see Texas playing at a national championship level next year? If not what pieces will Texas need to get there?
Sean Adams (1:13 PM)
That would be a tall order for me. Texas needs better play in big situations with the game on the line. Other than that they just need to be tougher as a team.
Sean Adams (1:14 PM)
Thanks for all the really good questions today. See you all next time. Enjoy your weekend.
