Donald Hunt is here!
How hard was it to come up with a list of only 10 top moments for black QBs?
Donald Hunt (12:03 PM)
It was tough. I had to go back over some notes and re-read some old articles. Go over my theories on the black QB. I was able to come up with those top 10 moments.
Where does Cam Newton rank among the best black QBs of all-time, right at this moment?
Donald Hunt (12:04 PM)
Right now, he's a really good QB. It's hard to say he's one of the best of all time. But he's off to a great start to his career. Warren Moon, Randall Cunningham, Doug Williams, those guys are all outstanding. Although he's off to a good start, he has the chance to not only be one of the best black QBs of all time, he could be one of the greatest QBs of all time. He has all of the skills.
What is the best sports moment you've actually witnessed?
Donald Hunt (12:06 PM)
There have been quite a few of them...I'm trying to think....Here in Philly, we've had world championships, that was great. The 76ers winning the NBA championship in 1983, that is always one of my favorites.
one of your top moments was Vick-McNabb squaring off in the NFC title game....how does that moment compare to the Dungy-Lovie Smith Super Bowl?
Donald Hunt (12:07 PM)
They're both great moments for the visibility of African-Americans in the NFL. For many years, African-Americans didn't get an opportunity to play QB. Now they have a chance to play QB and being in a high profile game is really good. But then again, the coaching part has its merits too.
If RG3 didn't get injured do you think they would have won the game against Seattle? I think they were done for either way.
Donald Hunt (12:08 PM)
I think they probably would have if he hadn't gotten hurt and was able to play up to his abilities, like he did all season long. I think they hold on to win that game.
Donald, do you think we've seen the last of the days where having a QB who is African-American is a big deal? Seems like that era of sports is over. All teams just want a good QB.
Donald Hunt (12:09 PM)
I think we're moving past that now for the most part, I really do. I think a lot of pioneers have blazed the trail for Russell Wilson, RGIII, Cam Newton, so it's made things easier, yes.
Zac (Athens )
Do you see RGIII following the same path as Vick? Having some absolutely amazing games/plays while he is healthy but just taking a beating because of his style of play? Or does his frame have the ability to add the bulk to stay off the IR list.
Donald Hunt (12:10 PM)
I think he'll take a similar path, but he'll have a great career, as long as he has a great OL in front of him. I think a lot of the hits that Michael Vick has taken is because the OL hasn't been as good as it has been over the years. As long as RGIII has a good OL, he'll be in good shape and have a successful career.
Who is the next big HBCU athlete to look out for?
Donald Hunt (12:13 PM)
There is a guy who I really like a lot. He plays for Arkansas Pine Bluff. He is a DL. His name is Brandon Thurman. He had an outstanding year. He led them to the championship. He had 15 sacks, one of the leaders in the nation, not only in FCS, but FBS too. He played the pass and the run extremely well. I think he has a lot of potential to play at the next level. He has good size and quickness. He's a really really good player.
the black QB is nothing new anymore...is there another position or coaching situation where we need to make more developments in the black community?
Donald Hunt (12:14 PM)
We still need more African-Americans in the front office, which will really help the diversity in the NFL. I think that would also help the hiring of blacks in coaching. I think we still need some improvements there.
Derek (work) [via mobile]
Do you feel that there will be a resurgence of African American baseball players? It's been quite low for some time now.
Donald Hunt (12:15 PM)
Yeah, it has been low for quite some time. What we have to do is get into the inner cities a little bit more.
Donald Hunt (12:16 PM)
And then get into more of the youth programs that we have for kids, RBI and Babe Ruth. Get into the neighborhoods too and just go out to the sandlots and just play.
Ryan (San Diego)
Picks for this weekend's NFL games?
Donald Hunt (12:18 PM)
I'm going to say Ray Lewis, Jacoby Jones, Bernard Pierce, Ray Rice will pull off a stunning win up in New England. In a real close game, by a field goal. In the NFC, I'll go with Kaepernick and the 49ers over the Falcons.
Donald Hunt (12:18 PM)
Those will both be really really close games.
LT or Ray Lewis?
Donald Hunt (12:18 PM)
I would probably go with LT, because he's a little faster. That's the only thing.
What if (NFL draft )
If your a coach with the #1 draft choice and RG3, sCam Newton, and Michael Vick are on the board who do you take as your franchise QB?
Donald Hunt (12:20 PM)
Well, Michael Vick was the No. 1 pick overall, he's been there done that. When he was at Virginia Tech, I saw him in person. That was something special. I saw him play at Temple and I will never forget that. I would say him, because he's already done it. People don't remember that he got his team to the championship as a freshman.
Carl (Virginia) [via mobile]
Do you think African Americans can have a big influence in soccer in the future?
Donald Hunt (12:21 PM)
I think it certainly could happen. But again, I think there has to be some soccer programs in the African-American community. I don't think there are as many as basketball, football and other sports.
Jay (New York)
Who is the best black athlete of all-time?
Donald Hunt (12:22 PM)
That's tough. I really like Wilt Chamberlain. He was a dominant player at both ends of the floor. He scored 100 points in a game; we just celebrated the 50th anniversary of that game. He played on two great organizations. He has to be one of the greatest athletes of all time.
Donald Hunt (12:23 PM)
I would just like to say thanks a lot for all of the support to you all in the chat here that you've given me over the years. Enjoy the NFL games. Keep in mind that March Madness is right around the corner. Spring training is not too far away and the NBA playoffs not too far after that.
