Ohm (1:00 PM)
Hey guys! What's up?
What's good Ohm?! I remember reading stories of how Mike Sullivan worked closely with Eli leading to one of Eli's best seasons and a Super Bowl win, do you think Sullys departure had anything to do with Eli's regression this season?
Ohm (1:03 PM)
Hey Dutch. That's a possibility but I don't think the QB coach who took over for him, Sean Ryan, worked any less harder with Eli. I think Hakeem's injury really hurt Eli and not having Mario to offset that injury like he did in past had an impact. Rueben Randle wasn't ready early on. And I think that Eli is capable of putting together a season like he had in 2011 but he probably somewhere in the middle of that season and where he was this season if that makes sense. In 2011, they had a lot of things go their way and Eli should be credited for making a lot of that happen but he also needs some help.
With the Giants first pick, do they go offense, defense or best available (regardless of needs on offense/defense)
Ohm (1:04 PM)
Kevin, I would tend to say they typically lean toward best player available. And usually that means defense. Now they loaded up on offense last year and went for need with RB and WR in the first two rounds. I would not be surprised at all to see them go defense and DL this first round but they do need a OL.
does reese think the LB situation is something that can be settled in house? or is he going to go for a FA or draft? best guess, paysinger, herz, jwill as starters?
Ohm (1:05 PM)
My guess is he thinks he can fill it in house and maybe add a vet free agent. But I'd be surprised if he spent a lot of money on a linebacker. They got some young guys who they probably think are ready to take the next step up and there's Rivers, who they could re-sign as well.
Mat (Valley Cottage)
Any chance the giants try and get a vet corner to take over for webster? Sean smith or rodgers cromartie?
Ohm (1:06 PM)
I do think the Giants need a vet corner. But I'd be a bit surprised if they spent a lot of money on one. We'll have to see what they decide to do with Corey Webster. If they were to release him, which I'd be slightly surprised if they did, then maybe they would go sign a corner with a sizeable price tag. But otherwise, the way Jerry was talking, it sounded like Corey is coming back. Perhaps he restructures his deal but he is entering final year of his deal.
Why was Marvin Austin inactive so often this season? Is it rust or his ability that is holding him back?
Ohm (1:08 PM)
I think the coaching staff didn't think he was ready and probably had some more learning and growing to do. That doesn't mean he won't have every chance this coming season to contribute. But clearly they didn't think he was ready for a bigger role this season.
Why are Giants fans acting like Eagles fans or Browns fans....they finished 9-7 and won a SB last year
Ohm (1:10 PM)
You tell me! LOL. I think they are just frustrated that they keep doing this year after year. But I think that if you are a Giants fan, this comes with the territory and that you would gladly take two Super Bowls in five seasons over the alternative. But some fans really believe the Giants should be going 13-3 every season and I just don't think they are that type of team that can do that. They are going to win 9-10-11 games and if they make the playoffs, can get hot and make a run.
Biggest issue with the defense: coaching or personnel?
Ohm (1:11 PM)
JD, when the defense finishes 31st, everybody has to share the blame. But it's same coaching staff that won a Super Bowl so the players need to play a little better and the coaches have to come up with better schemes. But some key pieces like Webster and others did not play up to their potential this season and that hurt.
Shimmy (Sch'dy, NY)
(Sorry posted in wrong section first time around). Do you think it's possible that the Giants let Cruz go to free agency for cap room? Or is he considered one of the locks for the G-Men?
Ohm (1:12 PM)
Shimmy, I can't see anyway how the Giants let Victor go. They should try to find a way to lock him up eventually down the road.
Do you think the Giants would shy away from Manti Te'o? They currently have an imaginary LB corps ...
Ohm (1:14 PM)
Haha... I don't think the Giants linebackers are as bad as some fans seem to believe. But the Giants have to do a better job of stopping the run bottom line. As for Manti, if he's there, they might consider him but I still think the Giants would go with a defensive lineman or offensive lineman -- that's my guess as of mid January. A lot can change between now and April. But I just don't think the Giants value a linebacker like that to take him in first round unless he is a spectacular talent.
Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)
Dear OhmDid the Giants ever honor the victims of shooting at the Empire State Building?
Ohm (1:15 PM)
Hey Chioke. I am not sure about that one. But the Giants always do what they can.
Will Eli age well in his 30's? When does Reese need to start looking for his successor?
Ohm (1:17 PM)
I think Eli will because he hasn't taken a ton of hits and doesn't rely on his legs or athleticism. But his accuracy wasn't as sharp this season but I just don't think we are about to see a QB on the decline or anything just yet. With all that being said, I do think the Giants could start grooming a young QB with some talent. But the problem is, when you draft a QB early, you start the clock as well on a new QB eventually taking over. And I don't think Eli is two or three years away from not being this team's QB anymore.
Nick (New York)
Hey Ohm, when is Hakeem Nicks a free agent? Do you think Giants will sign him to a long term deal?
Ohm (1:19 PM)
I believe Hakeem enters the final year of his deal this coming season. I think the Giants want to keep him around long-term but we'll have to see how much that will cost them and what kind of season Hakeem has this year. It's going to be hard to pay two WRs top dollar if Hakeem stays healthy and returns to being dominant like he can.
Any update to the Cruz contract negotiations? You expect the team and him to come to an agreement on a sizable extension this offseason?
Ohm (1:21 PM)
Jerry said recently that everything was on the table and that they would continue to try to sign him to an extension but the Giants also know he's a restricted free agent and they could just tender him. But Victor has always said that they have a structure in place as far as years perhaps but they remain apart on what each side wants.
do you think the read option offense is making the giants current strategy, ignoring LB talent, focusing on big pass rushers, a little "old-fashioned"?
Ohm (1:22 PM)
Chris, that's a good question. But even the read option can make linebackers look foolish. If anything, I think it forces teams to realize that they need to get faster. More speed at all positions.
With the emergence of David Wilson towards the end of the year, and the same with Andre Brown (before the broken fibula), where do the G-men currently stand on running backs in your opinion? Does Bradshaw still have a starting spot? (I know he has another year on his contract and his toughness is unmatched) or is this the opportunity for Wilson and Brown to shine as the 1 and 2?
Ohm (1:23 PM)
I think Coughlin wants all three back and wants to use all three. Now who starts remains to be seen. But I think they certainly would love to see what happened in the season finale happen all the time with both Bradshaw and Wilson running well and effectively. So Wilson could start next year but I still think if Bradshaw is there, he will split carries and Brown can come in on goal line and change of pace.
Hey Ohm, Do you see Prince emerging as a shut down corner next season? Aside from the injuries I thought he was the best corner in the NFC east this season. Your thoughts?
Ohm (1:24 PM)
I'm not willing to say shutdown corner just yet. But he was solid when healthy and should continue to rise this coming season if he can stay healthy.
Hey Ohm! What positions do you think NYG will target in the draft? any chance of Marcus Lattimore hitting NY?
Ohm (1:27 PM)
Impossible to predict who will be drafted by the Giants right now. But positions of need are OL, DL, CB, LB, S, TE.
What do you think happened to Tuck this year? He (and the rest of the DL) did not look good. But he was injured last year during the SB run and still looked off this year too.
Ohm (1:28 PM)
It's hard to answer this without knowing exactly what his role was week to week. Sometimes they had him playing back and not rushing as much and he was double teamed, etc. And other times he, and the other DEs, didn't win enough one-on-one battles as well. And then he got injured late in the season. I'd like to see another season before I come to any conclusion on Tuck and he has deserved as much and more with the way he has played in the two Super Bowl runs.
PJ (Sea Girt, NJ)
Just curious - will Coughlin try to use the fact that the Super Bowl is being played in the Meadowlands next year as motivation for the team? Or is that not something that players care about?
Ohm (1:30 PM)
PJ... I am sure TC will use whatever he can to motivate his team. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. I don't think the Super Bowl being at home, though, makes them want to get to the SB anymore than they already want to. Perhaps it adds just a tad more but they are going to either be driven to make it already no matter where it is or they will lack that passion and fire like perhaps they did this past season.
With the Giants Current financial problems in regard to the salary cap, do you see players like Bradshaw, webster, Eli, and Dhiel re-structuring their deals? or will someone per haps be traded/released?
Ohm (1:31 PM)
The Giants always find ways to get under the cap. They'll do what they got to and make it happen. Now how it happens remains to be seen. But Diehl, Webster, Boley and guys like that are candidates to re-do their deals or potentially be released.
Ohm (1:32 PM)
Alright guys, thanks for the questions today! See you all next week!
