Dick Vitale (11:04 AM)
What an incredible performance put together by Jim Larranaga's Hurricanes last night. Shane Larkin, Durand Scott and Kenny Kadji were brilliant as Miami rolled. I have never in my 34 years of broadcasting seen a Duke team give up so many easy baskets. It was layup after layup afetr layup after layup, dunk after dunk. It was great moment to build on and they cannot afford a letdown now. They are experienced with a lot of seniors and they have to learn to avoid that letdown. It ws men playing boys last night, according to Coach K. Miami will be bulletin board material now as people will be gunning for them.
Deven (New York, NY)
Did you ever storm the court while in college? I think its a college basketball trademark. What's your feelings?
Dick Vitale (11:06 AM)
I did not because we did not have a team winning games to that level. I can understand when a Miami beats a number one. I am just concerned that storming the court is happening too much and I am afraid that someone will get seriously hurt.
Another RPI Top-50 win (which makes 6). 17-2 against the 7th toughest schedule in the nation. Isn't it time to start including New Mexico in the "best teams in the nation" discussion?
Dick Vitale (11:07 AM)
I don't know about best team but I do believe Top 25. The Mountain West is a tough league and you ahev to lace them up and play every night. They have a very good basketball team and Steve Alford has done a good job. I don't know about top five.
Have you seen Oregon and what do you think of the Ducks?
Dick Vitale (11:10 AM)
Oregon, I have seen them a number of times on TV. I was impressed when they beat UNLV out there, an was impressed with the win at UCLA. Credit Dana Altman's leadership as he a is a great teacher. They have young guards who have played well.
Has Creghton's bubble burst?
Dick Vitale (11:12 AM)
The loss at Drake shows how tough the MVC is. That is life in college basketball. It is very difficult to win on the road. There are a lot of very good basketball teams. Basketball is a nightmard on the road. McDermott ws out part of the game which hurt.
Dixie V baby!! How many teams do the A-10 get come tourney time? Your awesome baby!!!
Dick Vitale (11:14 AM)
It is still so early. There is so much basketball to be played. I would say up to five. Butler, VCU, Temple, and then a combination between the likes of Xavier, Charlotte, Mass., St. Joe's, Saint Louis, there a lot of good teams but a lot fo games have to be played. Obviously they will beat each other up and not all of them will get in. These are just teams in the hunt at this point.
How wacky is the ACC this season? Wake beat NC State, seems like there are a lot of inconsistent teams
Dick Vitale (11:16 AM)
I saw a column by Luke DeCock in the Raleigh N&O and it said teams are winning at home. You have to win there. It is a good league but not a superstar league.
Even with two losses and a really hard remaining big ten schedule do you believe that Indiana still has a good chance to be standing on top win the march madness dust settles.
Dick Vitale (11:18 AM)
Indiana and Louisville will both be up there. Theyboth have all of the elements to be a legitimate threat to win it all. They have balance, scoring inside and scoring inside. Both have great opportunities. Teams will be beat during the regular season. The creme de la creme will find a way to rise. If you look at the best teams out there, Indiana and Louisville are in the conversation.
Rick (Louisiana )
If NC State fails to win the regular season or tournament, would this season be a disappointment in your eyes
Dick Vitale (11:20 AM)
I think the disappointment would be if hey did not do well in the NCAA tournament. They have to regroup for this Saturday as UNC is playing its best basketball in a while. NC State will have a task at hand after the loss to Wake. You ahve to let things play out before you start to talk about a team being disappointment for the season.
Adam (Twin Cities)
What's going on with my Gophers? I thought Tubby had us primed for a big year and now we're slumping.
Dick Vitale (11:21 AM)
I was shocked by the loss at Northwestern. When you look at the talent and toughness their recent streak is surprising. That shows how the Big Ten is so tough.
Sam (Kansas City)
Hey Dickey v! Quick question, How many more loses will KU get this year, and will they go far in the tournament?
Dick Vitale (11:23 AM)
Kansas plays great defense. Jeff Withey blocks shot, McLemore is talented, they are one of the teams that will be in the conversation. I feel there are about eight teams that will be up there at the end. Kansas needs to improve its offensive effiency at times.
Kris (North Carolina)
Do you think the Kentucky wildcats have a shot at being in the sweet sixteen?
Dick Vitale (11:24 AM)
Kentucky has to be concerned about getting in the tournament right now. BBN may not want to hear this, but who have they beaten. They had some opportunities against Duke, Louisville, Notre Dame, Baylor, Alabama but lost all of them.
Jackson Ward (Richmond, Va.)
Dick,Can VCU make it to the Final Four?
Dick Vitale (11:26 AM)
VCU has done a super job. Shaka Smart is one of the best young coaches in America. I would never count them out. Troy Daniels made 11 threes in one game. It is early to talk Final Four, because the A-10 is tough. VCU can flat-outplay.
Colton Patriquin (Vinton, Va)
Do you still believe Duke will be an elite team in the tournament after that 27 point loss to Miami? No team has ever one the tournament after loosing in a game by 26 or more points.
Dick Vitale (11:27 AM)
I think we have to wait on Duke and Ryan Kelly is that important to them. If he comes back, they are a different team. Right now, they are not the same Duke team.
Andrew (Sachem, NY)
St. John's is really warming up, big win over Notre Dame and then two more in conference. Can Lavin's team make the big dance? What do you think of Sampson and Harrison?
Dick Vitale (11:32 AM)
Steve Lavin's team has been warming up. Sampson has been Big East Rookie of the Week a few times. Harrison is a solid shooter. Obekpa gives them a shot blocker extraordinaire. They are a young team and have lacked consistency when you consider losses to NC-Asheville, Villanova and Rutgers at MSG. The middle of the pack in the Big East has several teams battling to move up.
Slippery Pete (Marathon)
The Gators. How far do you think they make it in the NCAA Tourney? Are they the best team in the country right now?
Dick Vitale (11:34 AM)
Florida struggled for a half last night against Georgia before turning it on. I think Billy Donovan has the pieces to make a serious run. They have the inside play and outside shooting, plus good depth. I do not think best team in the country right now, but again, in the equation.
Do you believe Wichita State is overrated?
Dick Vitale (11:35 AM)
No. The Shockers are right up there in a very underrated league, the MVC. I think Gregg Marshall has done a nice job and let's remember, the Shockers have a win over VCU.
Is Wisconsin's tourney streak in danger? I am getting worried
Dick Vitale (11:37 AM)
Wisconsin and Texas are the two teams with long streaks of making the big dance that have some more work to do. The Badgers have that big win at Indiana, which will count for a lot when the tournament committee meets. Bo Ryan always gets the most out of his players. I think the Big Ten is so tough as the top conference in America, and that will count for something too. I think Wisconsin will be ok.
Nick (Ann Arbor)
Who is the #1 team in the country in your eyes? Michigan?
Dick Vitale (11:38 AM)
Right now, yes. But that does not mean much given what has happened to #1 teams lately. Michigan has been the best team that I have seen in person so far this season. Trey Burke is obviously right up there in the Player of the Year discussion.
Bill Sorenson (Jacksonville, FL)
Coach, My nephew Steve Sorenson is a freshman walk-on at Miami. He scored his first collegiate point last night in the win over Duke. You said, "If Steve makes this free throw, he will be absolutely a hero in the eyes of his family..." He made the 90th and final point for Miami and he is indeed a hero to all of his family! Thanks for the shout out to Steve! He's a terrific young man and I hope you get to say his name many more times!
Dick Vitale (11:40 AM)
That's nice to hear, thank you. It is always great when a walk-on can be like a BMOC (big man on campus)...
Steve (Bradenton, Fla.)
Syracuse/Louisville is a killer rivalry (in football) and obviously basketball, knocking off eachother when they were #1. With the new ACC next year, what other conference has 2 rivalries of National importance and fierce passion, like Duke/NC and Syracuse/Louisville? I mean, holy smokes!!!!!!!!!! Those 4 teams are basically all final four teams!
Dick Vitale (11:41 AM)
Syracuse and Louisville will be special. By the way, don't forget about what Louisville football did in the bowl game against Florida. Charlie Strong just got a contract extension.
Landon (E L )
Tom Izzo has the Spartans quietly at 6-1 in the conference with some quality wins (Wisconsin in their barn and Ohio State). Did people make a mistake ignoring MSU after the Miami and UConn nonconference losses?
Dick Vitale (11:42 AM)
It is a long season and Izzo always has Michigan State in the picture come tournament time. I think he looks for his teams to show improvement. Night in and night out, the Big Ten is absolutely brutal.
Jeff (Austin, TX)
Any thoughts on the NCAA situation where they are now investigating themselves?
Dick Vitale (11:42 AM)
I know Mark Emmert is trying, but that news is tragic and very disappointing. Enough said.
Dick Vitale (11:45 AM)
I am looking forward to going down to Raleigh for the North Carolina-NC State game this weekend. Gameday will be there and it is always fun to be with the guys. It is a lot of fun and the Wolfpack fans give us a great environment. I hope that American Idol winner Scotty McCreery can stop by and say hi! I also hope that you will help me in the fight against cancer as we are having a raffle for a brand new red Mercedes. You can get more info at dickvitaleonline.com. See you again next week.
