Erik McKinney (3:03 PM)
Just over a week until signing day. Let's get to your questions.
Kennedy (Manhattan Beach, CA)
EK, your feet are to the fire. Where do Kylie Fitts and Eddie Vanderdoes sign in a week?
Erik McKinney (3:04 PM)
At this point in time, I think there's a good chance that both wind up at UCLA. The Bruins staff has done a remarkable job late in this recruiting cycle. However, Vanderdoes still has an official visit to Alabama this weekend and visiting the Crimson Tide has the potential to be a game-changer.
Jamison (dayton ohio)
Do you think with only a few spots left, USC will close with Eddie Vanderdoes and Quinton Powell? Or Possibly Fitts and Matthew Thomas? What's the status with Jason Hatcher and A'shawn Robinson with USC?
Erik McKinney (3:07 PM)
I think USC has an uphill climb for Vanderdoes, but could be in a good spot with Quinton Powell. It said something when Powell called off his remaining trips as soon as he got home from USC. Fitts and Thomas are probably both longshots for the Trojans, but they'll continue to work both. Hatcher is an interesting case. He tweeted that he decommitted, then took that down and sent out a tweet yesterday that made it seem very much like he is still committed to USC. He's a tough guy to get in touch with at this time. Looks like Robinson will stick with Texas.
How was the visit to UCLA for Woulard and do they really have a shot?
Erik McKinney (3:09 PM)
UCLA definitely has a shot with Woulard. The Bruins had two good ones in their backyard in Troy Williams and Hayden Rettig, that are headed out of state. But getting Woulard would be a big addition late in the process. Was very impressed with him at the Elite 11 finals.
Tukka Rask (Boston MA)
How good is myles jack LB from Washington(UCLA commit) according to some people hes the best LB on the west coast? if so why dident USC make a hard push for him?
Erik McKinney (3:12 PM)
Anytime multiple Pac-12 programs are pushing hard for a recruit, it's pretty well established that he's one of the top players in the region. Jack is definitely that. USC didn't have a huge need at linebacker in this class and they settled on Michael Hutchings early in the process as their top target.
Who do you think will have a better college career, Priest Willis or Terrell Newby.
Erik McKinney (3:13 PM)
That's a tough question because they play two completely different positions. Both are among the top handful of prospects at their respective spot in the West region and it would be surprising if either of them don't find success at the next level. Also, two great kids that handled a hectic process really well.
Peter (atlanta, ga)
Does Michigan have a shot at the number one class with Derrick Green on board?
Erik McKinney (3:18 PM)
Michigan bumped up to No. 5 with the commitment of Derrick Green, but it is going to take a lot to get to the top spot, especially with how well Alabama is capable of closing. Nick Saban's program is sitting at No. 2 right now, but I'm not betting against them coming away with the No. 1 class on signing day.
ripstartdust (Las Vegas)
Washington question: Give us a couple of names of uncommitted guys outside of the "big ones" (Vanderdoes, Foster, Falah, Robinson) who UW still has a good shot a getting?
Erik McKinney (3:20 PM)
Cornerback Patrick Enewally (Cerritos, Calif./Gahr) is a recruit to watch. He is getting a strong push from Cal and UCLA as well, but seems interested in Washington. The names you mention are definitely at the top of the list right now for the Huskies, along with a continued push to keep Myles Jack home. Falah and the Robinsons are probably the most likely to make a flip, if any of them do.
Doug (Dallas tx)
Does Jalen Ramsey stick with USC?
Erik McKinney (3:23 PM)
Ramsey is definitely an interesting one to watch right now. If pressed to make a guess right now, I don't think USC keeps him in the class. But these last seven days can change so much, so until he says something officially, everything is just a guess. He is very intrigued by both Florida and Florida State.
Seth (Ft Lewis, WA)
Do you think Dontre Wilson & Carrington both end up being Ducks?
Erik McKinney (3:27 PM)
I think Darren Carrington is still headed to Eugene. Keeping much of the staff in place was a big step for a lot of the recruits, Carrington included. Wilson is a different story, mostly because he's being pursued hard by Urban Meyer and Ohio State. I think Oregon has done enough to keep Wilson, but there are a few coaches I wouldn't bet against when it comes closing time, and Meyer is one of them.
Do you know if UCLA is still pursuing Newby?
Erik McKinney (3:31 PM)
I think UCLA would find a spot for Newby and they aren't going to give up on him, but Terrell didn't rush into a decision to commit to Nebraska and seems pretty set with the Cornhuskers.
Thoughts on the Robinson twins out od SD (Tyrell and Tyree) they opened up theier recruiting after Kelly left, At the end of the day where do you think they'll sign, stick with Helfrich and Oregon or head elsewhere?
Erik McKinney (3:34 PM)
Seems as though it's down to Oregon and Washington for the Robinsons, and we'll know a lot more about their intentions after this weekend's visit to Washington. It will need to make a big impression if they are going to flip, because both settled on Oregon for far more reasons than just Chip Kelly being there.
Tim (Palo Alto)
Whats up with Stanfords class? Pretty small. Will they likely pull in a HUGE class in 2014?
Erik McKinney (3:36 PM)
That's the way the scholarship situation worked out this year for Stanford and its roster. The Cardinal are making their rides count though, and have reeled in some typical Stanford players who are going to fit incredibly well into the system there. Not exactly sure what the available numbers will be next year, but there will almost certainly be more scholarships to give out than this year.
Marc (Berkeley, CA)
What do you think of Cal's recruiting class? Dykes had a late start to the season and still managed to get 28 verbals. Not sexy but solid is my take. Yours??
Erik McKinney (3:39 PM)
Very impressed with what Dykes has been able to do with Cal's class. Of course, hanging onto Cameron Hunt and Johnny Ragin would go a long way toward making it a complete success. But even without those two, there are a lot of solid pieces in the 2013 class.
What are your thoughts on the state of California's all-time leading WR, Drew Wolitarsky, who recently committed to Minnesota? Was it his speed that held him back from getting better offers?
Erik McKinney (3:43 PM)
I think Wolitarsky is a tremendous talent and is a terrific get for Minnesota. I'm not sure what held him back from getting more offers, but I was impressed every time I watched him play.
Isaac (Houghton, MI)
Is Stanford going to be able to close this class out strong like they did in last years class?
Erik McKinney (3:46 PM)
In short, no. Stanford just isn't in on the same number of top-tier guys that it was last year. There isn't a combination like Andrus Peat and Kyle Murphy out there to land on signing day this year for them. However, Stanford is very much in the running for Jordan Cunningham, which would be a big late addition, but not the same magnitude they closed last year's class with.
alex (Los Angeles)
For the class of 2014, do you see Adoree Jackson a Trojan?
Erik McKinney (3:47 PM)
Obviously it's still too early to answer definitively because so much can change depending on what kind of season USC has in 2013. But with a bounce back year on the field, yes, I think Jackson ends up at USC.
What a disastrous month for USC Recruiting. As of today, ESPN is predicting that zero of their interested uncommiteds will go that way on NSD (and others seem to agree). Do you have any good news for USC fans on the recruiting front, or is it all negative momentum? Does USC pull a surprise on NSD? If so, who?
Erik McKinney (3:52 PM)
The best news for USC fans is that the Trojans have already won on the recruiting trail for this class. While signing day might not be what they are used to, remember the fact that Su'a Cravens, Max Browne, Chris Hawkins, Justin Davis, Kenny Bigelow and Leon McQuay are already on campus. That is a huge boost for this class. As for looking ahead, this staff has shown they are too good to get skunked on signing day. They made a good impression on Quinton Powell and while I think Vanderdoes and Fitts will be difficult to pull back into the mix, they'll give it a shot.
I keep hearing Vanderdoes is down to ND and Bama with his mother completely sold on the Irish! Why are you counting out the Irish so soon?
Erik McKinney (3:55 PM)
Not counting out the Irish at all on this one. Vanderdoes has done well not to tip his hand, whether that's by design of if he's truly torn. There has been a lot of chatter about him. I think these last two visits (Notre Dame last week and Alabama this week) will be huge for him. At this point, I wouldn't rule out any of the five programs left in it.
Brooklyn Trojan (NY)
Hey Erik, will USC hang onto Prevot?? With the switch to a 3-4 mixed base D seeming to suit his playstyle does that help at all do you think? Thanks in advance.
Erik McKinney (3:58 PM)
Going to be tough for USC to hang onto Prevot, especially with Texas A&M and Notre Dame having so much momentum from this past season. But, like you say, the 3-4 seems to be a defensive very well suited to Prevot, and now that USC will utilize that with the new defensive coordinator, it's another piece to use in Prevot's recruitment. But it's so difficult to hold onto out-of-state commits who make early decisions and then get late pressure from the big time local school. SC definitely has a fight on their hands in this one.
Donavan (Tempe, AZ)
Can you see Myles Jack jumping the UCLA and becoming a Sun Devil?
Erik McKinney (3:59 PM)
I think if Jacks heads elsewhere, it will likely be Washington. But he has shown no signs of wavering in his UCLA commitment.
Erik McKinney (4:01 PM)
Thanks to everybody for stopping by and to everyone who submitted a question. Good luck to your programs on signing day.
