James Walker (2:00 PM)
Welcome to another AFC East chat. Free agency is right around the corner. Let's discuss.
Candy (Slippery Rock)
James, do you believe the rumors that the Dolphins number one target is Mike Wallace and would that be a good idea?
James Walker (2:02 PM)
The Dolphins will definitely pursue a WR and Mike Wallace is at the top of the list. Miami needs speed for Ryan Tannehill's big arm. There is no promise they will get Wallace. Other teams will be after Wallace. But Greg Jennings and Dwayne Bowe are also in the mix. The Dolphins have a lot of money and shouldn't leave empty handed.
How soon do the Patriots regret the Brady extension?
James Walker (2:04 PM)
I'm not sure they will, Alex. But if it happens, it would be at least 2-3 years into the contract. Tom Brady will be fine for now. But the question is how much longer can he take the big hits.
James Walker (2:05 PM)
The Patriots usually view things in a 2-3 year window. New England will be fine in that period.
I know that Rex Ryan and John Idzik have jumped back on Darrelle Revis' bandwagon, but realistically what can the Jets get if they trade him prior to the draft.
James Walker (2:07 PM)
Revis' health is a big issue. Is a team trading for the pre-injury Revis or a lesser version? That's an unknown. So how do you gauge his value? Teams would be smarter to wait another four months to see where Revis is in his recovery.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What AFC East Team Currently has a very bad Quarterback?
James Walker (2:08 PM)
Tom Brady is the only sure thing at quarterback in the AFC East. I like Ryan Tannehill but he has a lot of room to grow. I'm not big on Ryan Fitzpatrick or Mark Sanchez.
Can New England win the Super Bowl by getting Ed Reed and possibly Percy Harvin??
James Walker (2:09 PM)
Percy Harvin is out. Minnesota said the team is not trading Harvin and you have to take the team and its word. Reed is a good possibility and I think New England is the favorite. The Patriots have the money to spend and Reed and Bill Belichick have a healthy respect for one another.
James Walker (2:10 PM)
Could Reed help the Patriots win a Super Bowl? That's a very good step. The Patriots allowed 20-yards or more passing plays more than any teams in the league.
lou (Long Island)
JW,Please tell me that was Gnarls Barkley the Jets were interviewing at the combine not Matt, I'm begging you...
James Walker (2:11 PM)
No, it was Matt Barkley, Lou. The Jets are curious about Barkley. But it doesn't mean they will definitely draft him.
Jose Tx [via mobile]
If steven jackson is release where do u see him goin im thinkin patriots or lions
James Walker (2:12 PM)
I don't see him landing in the AFC East, Jose. The Patriots are possible, but they have other needs to address. Stevan Ridley is a pretty good player.
Do you see the Bills tagging Byrd, or will a deal get done to avoid the franchise tag?
Anthony (Rochester NY) [via mobile]
What do you think the Bills should do with Ryan Fitzpatrick? Especially considering that top 5 QB's are Re-structuring contracts to help the team.
Who do you see at QB for the Bills this upcoming season? Please don't say Fitzpatrick
James Walker (2:15 PM)
I expect the Bills to either cut Ryan Fitzpatrick or at least ask him to restructure. I have a hard time seeing Buffalo paying Fitzpatrick a $3 million bonus and $4.45 million salary. He may be a $7 million backup in that case.
True or False: CJ Spiller will rush for 1,500 yards next year
James Walker (2:16 PM)
Let me see who Buffalo's QB is first. If the quarterback is suspect, teams will crowd the line of scrimmage.
Predict the order in the standings for the AFC East next year. Obviously Patriots first, then who?
James Walker (2:17 PM)
The Patriots are safe for No. 1. But it's too early to tell before free agency and the draft. Rosters will change significantly in the next two months.
JR (Tampa Bay)
If Long leaves Miami, who do they replace him with?
James Walker (2:19 PM)
I sense from the Dolphins that they like Jonathan Martin. I'm not sure he's ready. Martin needs to hit the weight room this offseason and stop getting pushed around. But otherwise he has some ability and smarts.
If he's there, is Geno Smith a good pick for Buffalo at #8?
James Walker (2:21 PM)
The Bills definitely have to think about it. QB is their biggest need and Smith is the top-rated player. Personally, I don't like any QB this year in the top 10. But considering the need, the Bills may be wise to do it.
Jordan (St. Cloud, FL)
Do you think Miami will resign Reggie Bush, sign Mike Wallace, and maybe make a trade for Darrelle Revis?
James Walker (2:23 PM)
Jordan you are a dreamer. Bush is all but gone. The Dolphins like Bush at a low price. But Bush can get bigger money elsewhere in places like Detroit. Wallace is a possibility and Revis has no chance of landing in Miami. The Jets would be silly to trade in the division and face Revis twice a year.
Why would the Jets have an interest in David Garrard? Are they they expecting 2013 to be a 5-6 win season?
James Walker (2:25 PM)
Sorry to pass the bad news, Dom, but the Jets are desperate at QB. Mark Sanchez is making $8.25 million next season and NY can only go cheap at the position. I think NY can do better than Garrard (I like Matt Cassel), but at least they're trying to add competition with Sanchez.
Do the Pats spend more money on the pass rusher or the defensive back field?
James Walker (2:26 PM)
Definitely in the secondary. The Patriots' corners and safeties have been weak for years. It's time to fix the issue.
How does Rex Ryan still have a job? He has turned the Jets into a laughing stock, and every time he opens his mouth it gets worse and worse.
James Walker (2:28 PM)
Rex Ryan has been to back-to-back AFC title games his first two seasons. That is hard to do. However, Ryan is still living off the equity of that. So he's had two really good years and two bad years. Year 5 will be the tiebreaker to see if Ryan stays or goes.
Emily Litella (SNL)
What's all this fuss I kepp hearing about D Revis on the block? Dont they know there is none better?
James Walker (2:29 PM)
Revis is the best CB in football. However, the Jets can't afford to pay Revis when he becomes a free agent in 2014. NY's cap is too tight. So the Jets are considering getting something for Revis now instead of losing Revis next year and get zero in return.
Can the Jets get fair value for Revis? And what would do the trick- two 2s?
James Walker (2:33 PM)
Good question, Sean. It's impossible for the Jets to get fair value for Revis. He's the No. 1 CB in the NFL and probably a top-10 player. Unless the Jets get a top-10 player in return, it's not fair value. A boatload of picks is possible, but I don't see a team spending that much.
JR (Tampa Bay)
Speaking of NYJ QBs why is Tebow still on the team?
James Walker (2:34 PM)
The Jets think there's still value for Tim Tebow. I'm not sure that's the case, but New York is going to try anyway. I think they're wasting their time. The Jets will release Tebow at some point if a trade doesn't materialize.
Do you expect Miami to tag Randy Starks? I do think he is a solid DT.
James Walker (2:36 PM)
A franchise tag may be too rich for Miami's liking. Starks is a good DT but he's not a top-five DT. The Dolphins also have options. They can move Jared Odrick inside and find another defensive end like Olivier Vernon or a top draft pick.
Is Geno Smith a better option than Fitzpatrick?
James Walker (2:37 PM)
Tough question. It's hard to say for several reasons. I know what Ryan Fitzpatrick is in the NFL. He's a streaky and erratic QB who you can't win with consistently. Is Geno Smith better than that? He's never played an NFL down. However, the fact that there's a chance and he has potential may make him worth the risk.
With the exception of Welker and Talib, the #1 free agent target for NE should be? Goldston? Bowe?
James Walker (2:38 PM)
I like the fit of Ed Reed. I think he can solve a lot of New England's pass defense issues.
I think Miami should draft Tavon Austin in the first round no matter who they get in free agency.
James Walker (2:40 PM)
I like Tavon Austin. I think he's a great fit for the New England Patriots. However, Miami at No. 12 may be too high. Austin is more of a slot WR, and the Dolphins have Davone Bess.
But bees would be a free agent next year. Plus i feel like Tavon would change the dynamic of this team
James Walker (2:44 PM)
Let's see what Austin does in the NFL before declaring him a Hall of Famer. Bess is under contract for 2013 and the Dolphins don't need to spend a first-rounder one someone who may not get playing time.
James Walker (2:44 PM)
I like Tennessee WR Cordarrelle Patterson much better for Miami.
Stebo dolgeville [via mobile]
My bills got the 8th pick other than qb who should they draft and why
James Walker (2:46 PM)
The Bills have plenty of other needs like WR, LB and CB. There are plenty of safer picks to take.
Dave (Deland,Fl [via mobile]
what do think the Dolphins chances are of getting Wallace?
James Walker (2:47 PM)
Miami has a very good chance, Dave. The Dolphins will make a run and have the money to spend. There will be other teams chasing Wallace as well.
if miami takes patterson at 12, signs a true number one with bess do they have a legitimate top 5 receiving core ?
James Walker (2:50 PM)
Patterson has the raw ability but there could be a learning curve. The West Coast offense is very precise and Patterson will have to fit in.
Would you resign Fasano to play H back and #2 TE?
James Walker (2:52 PM)
I think Fasano is done in Miami. He wasn't a good fit in the West Coast offense. The Dolphins will go after more athletic tight ends.
Detroit fan here lurking your chat, is the interest between Bush & Detroit legit?
James Walker (2:54 PM)
Ben, thanks for checking in. The Lions' offense was at its best when they had a dynamic and athletic tailback in the offense like Best. Reggie Bush can be that kind of player, and Miami doesn't want to overpay. So it's a good possibility.
Do the Jets go desparate and draft a QB with #9 or do they trade back and try to build depth?
James Walker (2:55 PM)
I see the Jets going more QB in the second round. John Idzik is having his first draft. Taking a top-10 QB in a risky draft is risky, especially in NY. Geno Smith or Matt Barkley could be major busts and Idzik would get killed for it.
Dave (Deland,Fl [via mobile]
Do you think the Fins will draft a TE?
James Walker (2:59 PM)
I don't see it, Dave. The Dolphins drafted Michael Egnew pretty high last year. I don't see them doubling up.
James Walker (3:00 PM)
Thanks again everyone for the great chat. Remember to check the AFC East blog for the latest updates.
