Tom Carpenter (11:00 AM)
Still no word from the league following Serge Ibaka's below-the-belt shot on Blake Griffin, but I do expect them to suspend him for tonight's battle with the Lakers. Regardless, whenever someone takes one to the family jewels, I can't help but think of Hans Moleman's cinematic masterpiece: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV1LWhNpTJU ... Well, on to your questions!
Sid (New York, NY)
Hey Tom, I turned down a trade offer where I give up Kyrie Irving for Lillard and Hickson. Was that the right move? I figured someone with similar value to hickson is not impossible to find while losing Kyrie is a huge risk.
Tom Carpenter (11:03 AM)
Sid, I think you made the right call here. If you really work the waiver wire you can always pick up a double-double type option, so in a sense you would have traded Kyrie for Lillard. Lillard has been terrific this season, but Kyrie is on another level. You should aim higher if you are worried about Kyrie's health and want to deal him.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think will be the 2012-2013 NBA Champions?
Tom Carpenter (11:04 AM)
I hope it's the Thunder so that we have a long-time rivalry between the Heat and Thunder. And while I think the Thunder can do it, at this point, I think the Heat are going back-to-back.
Kurtis, TX [via mobile]
Tom, thanks for the chat. A trade was recently made in my league (8 teams, 8 category, head to head) and I wanted to see if u think its fair or not. Team X (clinched playoffs) receives Al Horford & Mike Conley from Team Z (trying to make playoffs) for Brandon Jennings & OJ Mayo. Both teams traded 2 months ago already too (Team X got Josh Smith & Mayo, gave up Blake Griffin & Matt Barnes).
Tom Carpenter (11:07 AM)
Looks OK to me. We can never examine a trade in a vacuum, so factoring in the individual stats those players generate and the playoff situation for each teams, this is a fair enough deal, IMO. Besides, as I often note, I don't recommend rescinding trades unless there is collusion involved. Many seemingly bad trades turn out to be good in the end.
Hey Tom, Parker was just dropped in my H2H league. Worth ditching Collison with the hope of Parker coming back in time for playoffs?
Tom Carpenter (11:08 AM)
So long as you think you can weather the storm without Collison, I would grab Parker. I wouldn't be surprised if he came back a tad early and he could make the difference between winning and losing, especially in H2H playoffs.
Kobe the best in the world and u know this man
Tom Carpenter (11:10 AM)
Kobe's one of the best, no doubt ... but it's hard not to dub LeBron the best in the world right now based on his total domination of the league. And Durant deserves to be part of the conversation.
Should I trade Deng & Klay T and in return get Monta Ellis
Tom Carpenter (11:11 AM)
Hey, Jon. I do like 2-1 deals and you would get the best player in the trade, so I like it.
Should I pick up Kevin Love if my league's playoffs start in 2 weeks, or will he not be back in time to help me?
Tom Carpenter (11:13 AM)
I think Love should be owned in all leagues, Rob, especially H2H leagues. It may be three weeks before he hits the hardwood, but he has so much upside that he could play a huge role for your team if you make your semis or finals. Don't forget the Wolves play four games every week the rest of the way, too.
Adam (Arlington, VA)
Hey Tom, what are you hearing about Derrick Rose's comeback? Do you think we can expect to see him before fantasy playoffs start?
Tom Carpenter (11:15 AM)
Adam, I really don't know. I don't think Rose even knows. My gut says he will be back in the next couple of weeks, but common sense says the Bulls should sit him until next season. Still worth a roster stash if you have the space, but I'd be more inclined to stash Love over Rose.
Trade ? (Deadline Wednesday)--I'm in a H2H league and was offered Ant Davis for my Kenneth Faried...Which big do you like better for the stretch run? Thanks Tom!
Tom Carpenter (11:17 AM)
I like Davis better than Faried for the stretch run, Jon. Have to grant that Davis carries more risk on the injury front, though.
Nate (Peoria, IL)
How concerned are you about Beal's ankle?? I'm debating whether to drop him for Mo Williams or not.. What are your thoughts on how they will do ROS??
Tom Carpenter (11:19 AM)
It doesn't sounds like it's a serious injury, so I think he won't miss more than a handful of games, Nate. I like his upside better than Mo's ROS, unless you are desperate for dimes.
I am concerned about D Lee's 3/3/3 playoff schedule. Should I trade him for JJ Hickson and his 5/3/4 schedule? We use 11 categories including O-boards.
Tom Carpenter (11:23 AM)
That's an interesting question, Dan. It's excellent that you are considering the schedules ahead of time, but I would stick with Lee over Hickson, because Lee is more of a scorer. Granted, the extra games might help JJ match Lee's production, but I like Lee a bit better overall. It's a pretty close call, though.
playing the point (Beantown)
thoughts, please, on the best PG play the ROS: D. Harris, A. Miller, N. Robinson, or R. Sessions?
Tom Carpenter (11:25 AM)
For dimes, I'd take Miller. Overall, I'd lean toward Sessions, so long as you can handle his rough FG%.
Is Granger worth hanging onto at this point?
Tom Carpenter (11:27 AM)
I was skeptical about his value even if he came back fully healthy. He clearly isn't even close to being healthy, though, and I don't expect him to do much, if anything, of note ROS. Move on, Kory.
Who would you drop if you had to clear room or to stream? Derrick Williams or Marcus Thornton?
Tom Carpenter (11:30 AM)
I trust Thornton more than Williams, Dub-H ... Thornton has proved capable of being a reliable performer in the past. On the other hand, Williams hasn't and if/when Love, Pek and AK47 are healthy, he won't have the opportunities to score like he has right now.
please choose 3 out of these to keep: Unibrow, Ibaka, Lillard, Griffin, Rubio, Jrue. thanks
Tom Carpenter (11:33 AM)
Looks like you did a good job of collecting potential keepers, Lo. Of course things may well change between now and the start of next season, but I right now I would take Ibaka, Lillard and Jrue.
Brad (Geneseo, NY)
Is it worth it to deal Noah for Love considering schedules? Playoffs start in week 20 for me
Tom Carpenter (11:35 AM)
That is a tough call, Brad. I am concerned about Noah's plantar fasciitis, but not so much that I would deal him for Love. I do think Love will return and be effective, but there are no certainties. Considering what a force Noah has been it seems like you should have little trouble dealing him for a currently healthy stud, instead.
H2H league, I win points and 3Ps nearly every week (thank you Durant), should I try to unload Klay Thompson for help elsewhere, or should I not risk giving up my advantage in those categories heading into the playoffs?
Tom Carpenter (11:38 AM)
It's a little difficult to answer that without knowing the rest of your roster and your opponents, Jay. My guess is that you could afford to trade Klay to help shore up another category, though. You should also consider how you match up with the other strong contenders ... if they are also strong in 3s, you may be better off holding on to Klay.
Ben (New York)
Traded Wall for Bosh. How did I do?
Tom Carpenter (11:40 AM)
Looks like a pretty fair trade, Ben. Assuming that you need big-man stats and not PG stats, this is a kind of no-brainer trade for both sides. Bosh has been slumping a bit, but he should get back to his usual ways soon.
Hello. Have westbrook,G. Hill,Matthews,Jack,Danny green,Marion,Amir,Tristan,Parsons,Ibaka,Kirilenko. Picked up Tobias............who should I drop to grab Mo Williams? Have a bye; playoffs will start week 23 for me. Thanks
Tom Carpenter (11:42 AM)
Drop Grant Hill, Corbin. Just don't see much value there.
should i use my #2 waiver spot on beal, and if so should i drop splitter or devin harris?
Tom Carpenter (11:44 AM)
I think Beal is worthy of dropping your No. 2 waiver spot on him, Dan. I'd lean toward dumping Harris over Splitter. But you could make the decision based on whether you need big man stats or PG stats.
Brama Bull (NY)
I believe Corbin meant he has George Hill...
Tom Carpenter (11:47 AM)
Thanks for catching that, Brama ... I'd probably rather have Mo over Tobias ROS, but Tobias is pretty intriguing right now.
i just read that bogut will not be on a restrictions limit. would you take a chance on him?
Tom Carpenter (11:50 AM)
Hey, Logan. Taking a chance is pretty much implicit in dealing with Bogut, of course. He's worth a shot in daily leagues, but I'd probably look elsewhere in weekly lineup leagues. The Warriors play three games each of the final three weeks, and with his random misses you could end up with just one or two games from him in playoff weeks.
Chris Paul (LALA Land)
I know I'm the best PG in the league, but would it be crazy for someone to trade me for Stephen Curry? Curry's got PG/SG eligibility and has been tearing it up over the last few games.
Tom Carpenter (11:54 AM)
That's not crazy at all if you need 3s and can lose a bit in dimes and steals. Especially if you have a true PG and you can slide Curry over to SG. Of course, I must include the injury caveat: at any moment Curry's ankles could wreck your season.
would you do this move in a vacuum: cousins for rubio?
Tom Carpenter (11:56 AM)
Sure, rr ... if you need his PG stats and can get by without Cousins' big-man numbers. Plus it's a little easier to move Cousins as a big for Rubio's horrific FG% because Cousins is a mediocre shooter for a big.
H2H Keeper League Question: In a vacuum, how would you rank the potential keeper value from this group of players-- Horford, Rose, MGasol, KLove, Rondo, & Cousins? Trying to prioritize them.
Tom Carpenter (11:58 AM)
Hey, Bill (aka Matt), no need to ask a question multiple times, fyi. I rank them Rose, Love, Horford, Rondo, Gasol, Cousins.
banging the Drummond (not Detroit)
expectations, please, on Drummond? how much longer can he be left on the wire? thank you!
Tom Carpenter (12:01 PM)
Ah, nice wordplay, there ... definitely the first time I've heard of a player banging on a drum as part of his rehab! I honestly thought he would return this week, but it sounds like the Pistons are being ultra cautious with him. Can't blame them, since he has the best potential upside on the team for the long term. At this point, I'd just keep an eye out for more encouraging reports before snagging him off waivers, unless you have the space to burn on your bench.
Tom Carpenter (12:02 PM)
That's a wrap on this rap session. I'll see you all back here next week! Be sure to follow me on Twitter @AtomicHarpua and good luck this week!
