Cimini, longtime Jets beat writer for the New York Daily News and a Syracuse University graduate, covers the Jets for ESPNNewYork.com.
Send your questions now and join Cimini Friday at 2 p.m. ET!
Rich Cimini (2:00 PM)
Welcome, everyone. Thanks for dropping in. Things are starting to pick up in the NFL, as the negotiating period opens at midnight. Plenty to talk about.
IRA (Staten Island)
Rich, I am with you on resigning Keller if the price is right. Think a 4 year deal for 15 mill with 8 or so guarantee would get him?
Rich Cimini (2:02 PM)
That would be a great deal for the Jets, but I'm not so sure Keller would like it. I'm told they haven't expressed much interest. He will hit the market Tuesday. But this is a buyer's market and I think many players will be disappointed when they see how little money is out there.
Rich (New Jersey)
Hi Rich, Since the Jets replaced Tony Sparano with Marty Mornhigweg, how much of a change in the offense, will it be more run, pass or an even mix of run & pass plays, will we see on the field in 2013?
Rich Cimini (2:04 PM)
People hear West Coast offense and they immediately think pass, pass, pass. Not so. Look at MM's track record in Philly: Shady McCoy put up big numbers on the ground. Now all the Jets need to do is find someone like him.
Does it really make sense to use another high pick on another raw guy who didn't produce well in college (ala Stephen Hill)? Mingo despite superior athleticism didn't produce well in college. Even Gholston was able to put up great stats with supreme athleticism so what does that say about Mingo? Way too much risk at #9 don't you think?
Rich Cimini (2:06 PM)
I agree. He's risky for a couple of reasons, mostly his size (a Maybin-esque 241 pounds) and his position. He'd be an OLB for the Jets, and he hasn't played much there. Projections are always risky, especially in the top 10.
Would any team in the NFL pay Revis QB money? Especially in the era of a flat salary cap?? Won't the Jets even negotiate to, say, $11-12m pa?
Rich Cimini (2:07 PM)
The Jets won't negotiate, period. It's like they're afraid of Revis' agents. If they want to trade him, fine, but how do you know what he wants until you meet with the agents? btw, his current APY is 11.5 M.
Rich, do you see the Jets maybe signing Dwan Landry? He is getting released by Jacksonville today.
Rich Cimini (2:11 PM)
I noticed that. Maybe they can replace Landry with Landry. I know this: Rex and Dwan have a good relationship from Baltimore. Dwan is the reason LaRon signed with the Jets -- he gave him a glowing scouting report of Rex and the defense. Right now, all safeties are in play for the Jets.
Rich, I was a little surprised to see Brandon Moore as likely gone. I mean how much money will he really get. He is 32 years old. Do you really think he will get a big contract? Or do you think he is sick of the Jets circus and is unhappy as being the second part of that butt fumble?
Rich Cimini (2:13 PM)
Yeah, I think Brandon is looking for a change of scenery. HE's a very professional, by-the-book kind of guy, and I think some of the craziness around the Jets has annoyed him. I don't expect him back.
Andy (Huntington, NY)
For the record, I want them to keep Revis. But I think part of the concern of many is the team's poor draft record (if they trade him for picks and those picks turn out to be busts, it makes things even worse). Is there any chance he'd be traded for players or do you see this as a pick-only scenario?
Rich Cimini (2:14 PM)
I wouldn't say it's a picks-only scenario, although that's the most likely. I know they've talked about players with other teams in a possible trade.
Anthony Forte (Canuck in Mich. )
Rich great job as always. With Garrard obviously being an option the Jets have looked to and Matt Moore now being off the market, which other QBs do you see the Jets checking out for competition? It's slim pickings but a guy like Rex Grossman or Campbell have to be somewhat interesting right? Can't let Sanchez have nothing to compete with.
Rich Cimini (2:16 PM)
I agree; there has to be legitimate competition. Keep an eye on Kevin Kolb. Has a huge salary and Arizona is trying to get him to restructure. If he gets cut next week, there's the Mornhinweg connection. But money will be a factor. The Jets are squeezed.
Gary (York, Pa)
Good Afternoon, I thought from the beginning Tampa was the destination for Revis. Does a 1st and 4th get it done?
Rich Cimini (2:19 PM)
Good afternoon, Gary. How bout a 1st and a conditional 4th? The Jets need protection in the likely event that Revis returns to past form. Maybe that 4th and jump to a 2nd based on playing time, performance, etc.
Will the Jets resign Braylon Edwards?
Rich Cimini (2:20 PM)
Good question, Matt. If they do, it will be down the line.
randy (new york)
just dreamt the jets didn't win a game this year and with the 1st pick in the 2014 draft took clowney over manziel..
Rich Cimini (2:21 PM)
That would be a no-brainer. Wouldn't that be a nightmare, not winning any games?
Rich, now there are reports that Revis wants to stay with the Jets. I would think that Nike would want Revis to stay in the NY market considering they are making a brand and logo around Revis.
Rich Cimini (2:22 PM)
Did Revis say that? No, just unnamed people. I'm sure he'd like to stay with the Jets, but in the end, he'll go for the best deal.
Rich, say the Jets sign Garrard or some other QB and he beats out Sanchez. Do you think the Jets keep him on the bench or flat out release him? And if they release him I know they must eat the guaranteed money for this year but are they done with him after that or is there guaranteed money for 2014.
Rich Cimini (2:23 PM)
This much I know for sure: The guaranteed money ends this year. If they release him, you need an alternative. Got any ideas?
Any truth to the Jets talking to Nassib at his pro day? You are a syracuse alum, what is your opinion on him?
Rich Cimini (2:25 PM)
There was one report that said they took him out to dinner. I like Nassib. He has grown on me. Good second-round value. Smart, tough, decent mobility. Kind of quiet. Struggles a bit with deep accuracy. Doesn't have a big arm. Like his ability to rally teams from behind.
Rich, if Holmes doesn't restructure do you think the Jets will rid their hands of him?
Rich Cimini (2:28 PM)
I don't think they want to cut him, obviously, but anytime you ask a guy to take a pay cut, your leverage is the pink slip.
Rich, the Jets really can't have that high opinion on Jeff Cumberland. Tell me he isn't going to be the starter next year. If they put a 2nd round tender on him, do you think anyone else will sign him?
Rich Cimini (2:29 PM)
They gave him the low tender, $1.3 million. That gives them the right of first refusal, but there would be no draft-pick compensation. There was never a chance he'd get the 2nd round tender.
I know the Jets think highly of Austin Howard. Does any other team in the league think that highly of him to sign him if the Jets put a 2nd round tender on him?
Rich Cimini (2:30 PM)
A team at the bottom of the second round, like the Ravens, might think about it.
Geoff (Livingston, NJ)
Could Jets make a surprise run at Ed Reed or Kruger from the Ravens?
Rich Cimini (2:31 PM)
No chance. I think Kruger goes to Indy, Reed stays in Balt.
Rich, do you think the Jets will have any interest in Eddy Lacy? Or is their another RB that interests them?
Rich Cimini (2:31 PM)
Lacy is definitely on the radar, but I don't think he lasts to 39.
Rich, do you think the Jets release Pouha? He has the back issue and I rather have Devito than Pouha.
Rich Cimini (2:32 PM)
Interesting question, Jack. I think there could be a surprise move on the DL. Not sure what it is yet, but Po'uha is a guy you have to look at because of the back and the salary.
Rich, I really don't understand trading Revis. NFL teams dream about drafting players like him and then you do everything you can to keep them. Even if they get a couple of draft picks for him what are the odds any of those players turn out to be half as good as Revis?
Rich Cimini (2:33 PM)
They'll never get equal value. And, you're right, there's probably a 50% chance the picks don't work out.
Rich, what do you think the Jets do with the 9th pick in the draft? I feel OLB. I like Barkevious Mingo. You raise a good point about Ryan wanting bigger OLB's for his scheme, but Rex might not be here next year.
Rich Cimini (2:34 PM)
They need a speed rusher. I'd take Jordan over Mingo, although neither one would be ready as a rookie to be an every-down OLB.
Rich, my friend Chris asked me this one the other day....see what you think......Let's say Sanchez somehow has a very good year with the Jets and thrives in Mornhinweg's system.....do the Jets sign him on a multi- year contract, or move on no matter what? I don't see it, curious to see what you think
Rich Cimini (2:35 PM)
Another multi-year contract? They already have him through 2016.
Rich great job as always. I cannot beleive Jets will simply cut Tebow. Who exactly is their alternative at qb? Who is going garner any type of interest this year. The trade for Tebow made no sense last year but keeping him this year makes sense because the team wil need interest and the quartreback of the future has not been drafted yet.
Rich Cimini (2:37 PM)
I can appreciate your big-picture thoughts, but here's the deal: They don't see Tebow as a viable alternative at QB. Period.
Rich,Great work as always.Re: Holmes and the salary offset issue. Do the Jets really have leverage at all? If the Jets were to cut Holmes, what would stop him from going to the Patriots for a salary of $1 (one dollar) per year and sticking the Jets with the rest of the 7.5 million. That kind of move sounds like its in both Holme's and Bellichick's playbook.
Rich Cimini (2:39 PM)
That's funny. Thing is, he'd have to take the vet minimum, which is probably $$700k or so. (I could look it up, but it would take too long.) Holmes' choice: make $7.5M by going elsewhere or sticking around and making $9M (just guessing on the Jets' offer).
Rich I follow you daily but I cannot fathom how jets cut Tebow befroe the draft given the current state of the quarterback. Unless they are high on Barkley Smith or glennon why cut Tebow going into this rebuilding year sans Revis? Woody is a cheap owner and has a disdain for empty seats tebow is his oly answer to create some buzz and perhaps spark the team for 2013
Rich Cimini (2:42 PM)
Lot of Tebow love out there. People: He can't play QB in a conventional offense, especially a precision-passing offense run by Mornhinweg.
If they rework the Holmes deal wouldn't that put them in future Cap hell? Thats how we got into this mess in the first place by deferring future payments. Why not release him and take the 7.5 hit
Rich Cimini (2:45 PM)
Here are the numbers on Holmes: He has a $12.5M cap charge. If they cut him, they get hit with $11.25M -- a savings of $1.25M, PLUS the salary he receives from his new team. Figure he'd sign for $3M or so. They'd save $4.25M on the '12. They could designate him a June 1 cut and spread the hit over 2 years. I don't have those numbers at my fingertips.
If the Jets do end up trading Revis, say within the 2-3 weeks, does that open up any cap room for this season?
Rich Cimini (2:48 PM)
He counts $9M on the cap. If they trade him before his $1M roster bonus is paid next week, they'd take a $12M hit -- the acceleration of the $18M option bonus he received in 2011. So they actually LOSE cap space by trading him now.
Stephen Fabian (Yonkers)
Is there any thoughts within the organization that McElroy could win the starting g spot with the new OC and offense?
Rich Cimini (2:49 PM)
Best addition/subtraction on the coaching staff this off-season?
Rich Cimini (2:49 PM)
I like the Mornhinweg hire. And I like the Sparano fire.
Phil (New Jersey)
Rich, do you think the Jets will bring in Chase Daniel or Matt Cassell now that Matt Moore is off the market?
Rich Cimini (2:50 PM)
Wouldn't rule out Daniel. Can't see Cassel.
George (Long Island)
Do you agree Jets should let Keller walk? Cumberland to me offers similar skill set for 50 cents on the dollar. I would combine Cumberland with a more traditional guy like Fasano for same money
Rich Cimini (2:51 PM)
It's all about scheme, and the West Coast offense requires a pass-catching TE. Cumberland isn't as good as Keller, pure and simple. Makes too many mental errors.
Jay (New Jersey)
Rich, with Shonn Greene most likely gone, does Idzik look to the draft to replace that opening? A Montee Ball/Bilal Powell combo sounds intriguing
Rich Cimini (2:52 PM)
Yeah, I think they look to the draft. Plenty of RBs in the draft.
Barry T (New Jersey)
Hey Rich, if the Jets decide to wait until the trade deadline to move him, any chance that Darrelle could stage one of his regularly scheduled hold outs to force an earlier exit?
Rich Cimini (2:53 PM)
Yeah, but he has that no-holdout clause: Deal wouldn't void and he'd be under contract through 2016 at $3M per. Would give all the leverage to the Jets.
Rich, what was the thinking in keeping Rex? Hes a dead man walking at this point. Would it have been bad to say, "thanks for putting us back on the map and getting us relevant, but we are moving on." I dont see how they get more than six wins.
Rich Cimini (2:54 PM)
Still owed $6M to $7M in salary. Very good defensive coach. Increases the profile of the organization. Players like him. Plus, was there anyone better out there?
Craig (Long Island)
Are there any other players besides Holmes that are being talked to about restructuring their contracts? Will be there be any further cuts other than Tebow? What is their goal as far as cap room for free agency?
Rich Cimini (2:56 PM)
They're about $8M under the cap, but that money will go to RFAs and the draft. They'll gain $1M or so by cutting Tebow. Need to restructure a few deals.
While I am crushed about the Jets probably trading Revis, would you agree that all this rhetoric about him supposedly wanting to stay is meaningless unless he agrees to give them a discount?
Rich Cimini (2:57 PM)
key word ... rhetoric. That's all this is -- noise. It's all posturing. If Revis gets traded, and I think he will, he doesn't want to be painted as the bad guy.
Hello Rich, excellent work. If the Jets decide to trade Cromartie instead of Revis, what would be the timetable for that deal to happen? Would they resign Revis first and then make the trade? How would that all go down?
Rich Cimini (2:59 PM)
Cromartie is due a $2.3 M roster bonus on March 12 or shortly thereafter. That would virually eliminate any chance of a trade. And, yes, they'd have to re-sign Revis first because, once you trade Cro, all the leverage goes to Revis.
Tom B. (Albany)
Is there any chance of Woody selling the team in the near future? I think the franchise is in need of a owner who has football knowledge and how to run a team. Look at the difference between the Jets and Giants. The culture stems from the top and it is evident Woody has allowed this circus to spiral out of control.
Rich Cimini (3:00 PM)
Why would he sell? The NFL is great business. Ask Jerry Richardson.
Rich - when will the media dig deeper into the deep influence of Ira Axelrad? Why is this guy in the GM interviews? Why does Woody have such faith in him? Another example of Woody's weakness as an owner...It Starts At The Top!!!
Rich Cimini (3:01 PM)
I think you mean Ira from Staten Island, don't you?
I'm surprised most 'mocks' having the Jets take a Mingo, Jordan or Ansah. Yes, they need an outside rusher, but all these guys are 'high ceiling' guys. Do you see Idzik, in his first draft, taking that type of chance? I mean if J Jones-who produced in college-is there than I can see it. If not, with Moore likely gone, wouldn't they take Warmack or Cooper? They aren't 'sexy' but both look to be good players with very low 'bust' possibility.
Rich Cimini (3:02 PM)
Patterson also a possibility.
MJ (Brooklyn, NY)
Mark, I know this probably isn't the first or the last question you'll receive about the Revis saga, but here we go: With all the recent trade rumors, connecting the dots to Tampa, all the reasons why they should go after him and reasons why not? do you feel because of the new negotiation period that starts at 12:01 a.m. tonight, we are going to truly get a feel of what teams really want Revis now?
Rich Cimini (3:02 PM)
No. Teams have been allowed to talk trade already.
Rich Cimini (3:05 PM)
Sorry, folks, I'm out of time. Thanks for spending an hour here. Good stuff, as always. Right now, I'm gonna resume shoveling my driveway, but I have a feeling I'll be distracted by free agent stuff. Be well. Rich
