AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
Greetings gang! We're back yet again for another 60 minutes of fantasy chattage. Second cup of coffee in hand - who, pray tell, is up first?
JB (Mount Pleasant)
Who would you rather keep: Medlen in 28th round or Wil Myers in 30th? No keeper penalty.
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
I'm going to keep Medlen. I think we're talking about getting someone we know is going to contribute all season long or someone we don't. At that price point, the value is greater for the pitcher.
Keeper league - Profar or Taveras for the next 5 years?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
Because Profar is more likely to be playing the middle infield, I'd go with him. If the Rangers end up making the decision to move him to the OF, which has been toyed with, though not necessarily all that seriously, then I'd go the other way. For now, though, I'd wager on Jurickson.
Candy (Slippery Rock)
AJ, which of these pitchers is most likely to be a disappointment this year: Gio Gonzalez, CC, Jered Weaver, or Greinke?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
I think you'd have to say Greinke, given the health concerns - but then again, given those concerns, one could make the argument he's also the most likely to be a huge surprise.
Are you a believer in M. Bumgarner to be top-15 SP this year or should I be concerned with how he finished 2012?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
I am big on the MadBum bandwagon, yes. I'm willing to write off September as a function of fatigue, which one would hope wouldn't still be the case in April.
hi AJ, last keeper spot, BJ Upton or Elvis Andrus? Already keeping CarGo, Hamilton, Stras, Hosmer
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
I'm going with Upton. New scenery and he can potentially give you the same speed as Andrus, but with a lot more power.
14 team league, stash Carlos Ruiz or comfortable with Doumit for the year?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
I don't think I'd waste the roster spot on Chooch in a one-catcher league. Besides, the difference between him and Doumit isn't all that great.
Which Davis has a better 2013: Ike or Chris?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
Both have legitimate shots at 30-plus homers, but I'd go with Ike as an overall better option.
Good morning AJ. I was outbid for a top SS and ended up with A.Escobar in our 12-team, roto-league. However, another team just dropped Aybar. Do you like one more than the other? Aybar could do wonders hitting 2nd in that lineup. Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
I do actually like Alcides a bit more. I certainly see what you're saying about the Angels' lineup being super-solid, but while Aybar might score a few more runs, the RBIs are not going to be there.
Thoughts on Cueto this season? He hasn't been great in ST.
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
As long as a pitcher's arm doesn't fall off, spring means nothing. For all we know, the coaches could tell a SP - and they often do - to work on a certain pitch all game and the hitters end up knowing what's coming. I'm not worried and expect a top-10 type season.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
I know it's spring, but think Football! Do you think NE should've kept Welker? Early line on his catches, 85.5? Stokley had like 50 last season and WW will take catches from thh TEs...
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
Can't deal in should'ves in fantasy. All that matters is what IS. Welker probably hurts all the Denver WR numbers and I'd assume if chemistry is there with Peyton (and why not?) he'd get 100 again.
Are there any Astros players that should even be considered for any fantasy team?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Stats are stats. It doesn't matter where they come from. I'd certainly take Altuve on my roster. Carter and Maxwell could be sleepers.
AJ. Love your book...Need help - Last keeper: Machado or Zobrist. Long-term league and no keeper restrictions (years, picks, inflation). Want to win now but also look to future...
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
Thanks muchly... I'd go with Zobrist. You know what you're getting from him and there's no way I throw back a potential top-50 player with the hope that a youngster develops.
Anyone worth drafting out of the Detroit bullpen? Missed out on saves in the draft and want to draft a "close-in-waiting" since Rondon is looking shaky and Detroit isn't confident in him...
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
How do you gauge confidence? I mean, the fact he's in the conversation at all means to me that they have no confidence in anyone else. I suppose Coke might get a shot or Benoit... but I'm not sure we don't see the rookie in April.
going back to the welker concern for one last question please - do you think eric decker gets impacted more than demaryius? Thinking demaryius is the deep guy, decker and welker are BOTH the short/intermediate type. demaryius still a top 10 WR or do you think he drops to top 15/20?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
I'll answer this one since Welker Q's are all the rage in the queue. Decker clearly gets hurt the most here. Thomas will still do what he does...Welker's never been much of a TD thief.
If you missed out on the Top 10 2B - could you talk yourself into some kind of pick 2 of Weeks/Utley/Ackley/Espinosa platoon?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
I'd certainly love to have Utley and Ackley. Chase is going to be playing for one last contract and the Phillies will squeeze every last bit out of him. You should too, and if he fails, Ackley and the new dimensions in Seattle should be able to fill the void.
Every year I listen to you guys and avoid drafting closers until the end when I grab someone like an Addison Reed. What late round guys do you have for me this year who will be closing out games?
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
It's exactly because we don't truly know that you do wait. Parnell, Rondon, Veras, Wilhelmsen and Fujikawa would all be high on my list for "guys to grab late and still feel OK about it" if still there.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
Looking at the other side...Amendola pretty much a lock for 100 receptions too, or does A-Hernandez get a bigger piece of the pie?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
It's Bill Belichick. I would not be surprised to see him completely dedicated to ensuring Amendola gets 10 more catches than Welker.
Please rank the following Starters: Mcdonald, Hansen, EJax
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
Hanson, Jackson, McDonald.
Dynasty Draft - B Phillips or Altuve? Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
Dynasty league, I'm much more apt to go with Altuve.
Bobby (Madison, WI)
Can you speak about the draft strategy as it pertains to the obvious deep pool of power available at 1B/3B and the lack of power at OF? I am taking Braun over Cabrera at #2 overall for this very reason.
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
I don't see it that way. I look at it simply as value each player and take the best one you can in the first few rounds without regards to position. I still come out with Braun over Cabrera, but I don't really see a "lack of power" in OF.
Everything screams keep McCutchen, but why do I feel like J Up is in for a better year? 10 tm pts league.
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
Points leagues? Not a chance I keep Upton over Cutch. Just way too many strikeouts.
thoughts on Lohse? taking a flyer in hopes he lands with an NL team?
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
For $1 in an auction or with a late draft pick? Why not?
How do you rank the following as far as most confidence? Does your ranking change for ceiling? Kemp, Prince, Votto or Verlander?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
Prince, Verlander, Votto, Kemp. In terms of ceiling, I can see pushing Joey to the front, though.
Do you see Oakland's hitters, Reddick and Moss repeating last years numbers or will they regress?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
Reddick repeating, Moss regressing.
Thoughts on The Asdrubler this year?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
Same as usual I guess... 6-8 at his position, but little chance of getting higher than that.
Can you make a case for taking me as wrap around pick in a 12 team roto league? SS looks very thing this yr
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
Personally I cannot. I'd wait for the snake to come back your way and deal with it then.
Buying or selling Josh Rutledge?
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
Rutledge is a perfect example of a guy who started out as a sleeper and then many people started to pick him in drafts and his momentum built to the point where he's now overvalued. He's not a 12-team league starter, but could step in at MI spot. In Round 15 selling. In Round 20 buying.
Looking at this year and the next two would you rather have Profar, Eaton or Myers amongst top rookies.
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
I think my odd man out would be Myers.
Who do you see closing in Cin when Broxton can't get the job done?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Probably Chapman, to be honest. But love the confidence level you've got.
I'm planning on waiting real late to pick up a catcher, can u give me some options i should have at that time.
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Rosario, Lucroy, McCann, Avila -- how late we talking?
Bonzo on Drums (Wales, UK)
For my #2 SP, should I take Dickey, Matt Moore, or Kris Medlen?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Medlen for me.
Rank 'em for 2013: Aoki, De Aza, and Carlos Gomez?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
De Aza, Gomez, Aoki
Who are your sleepers at SS this year? Thanks
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Alcides, Espinosa, Aybar, Hardy.
In the ESPN points rankings Trout is in the 20's, why?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
It's based on the projections which have him hitting .285 with the high K-low BB total. I don't agree with that being what he does, but if he does - that's how the math plays out.
Do you subscribe to Mr. Roto's opinion that, with pitching being so deep, you need to get a couple studs to separate yourself from the pack?
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
I think it's a viable strategy, but where it can hurt you is if nobody else goes early on pitching and you end up getting lapped in hitting. I prefer not to come in with a plan and feel out the draft - but in many leagues, TMR's tactic will end up working.
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
That's the chat, gang. The hour flew by, so thanks! We're on Twitter (@ajmass) and can talk to you there until the next time... and remember - a long time ago, we used to be friends but I haven't thought of you lately at all.
