Chat with Michael Collins
Welcome to Sportsnation! On Friday, ESPN.com golf writer Michael Collins brings his unique perspective as a former caddie into the chat.
Collins, who joined ESPN in August 2011, started his career as a stand up comedian and became a caddy by accident. He started looping for fun in 1999, but by 2003 decided to make it a full-time gig. He was the caddy for Chris Couch in 2003 when he won the Nationwide Tour championship.
Collins has never won an award for his writing, but he'll tell you that's probably because he failed high school English and still types with only his index fingers. But he's smart, funny and, most importantly, knows the game and what players and caddies go through on a weekly basis.
Send your questions now and join Collins Friday at 3 p.m. ET!
Michael Collins (3:01 PM)
It's the fastest hour in golf! If Adam Scott beats Vijay in a playoff or vice versa, which is bigger: Adam's long putter or Vijay's punishment? BRING IT!!!!
Paul (Yuma, Arizona (Spring Break))
Michael, when you were caddying, what was the single biggest blowup/ temper tantrum you ever witnessed?
Michael Collins (3:03 PM)
I saw David Berganio Jr. on one hole destroy a tee marker, curse out a marshall then throw his putter in a lake. It was classic!
MC, You have to make a par on the 18th on Sunday at Augusta to win by 1 shot. Who hits your drive? Your second shot? Who putts? Can't be the same golfer.
Michael Collins (3:05 PM)
Of all-time? Hogan hits the drive, Nelson hits the iron, and Nicklaus hits the putt.
If the PGA goes against the USGA / R&A and allows anchoring, does that mean guys will only be able to anchor in 1 major per year? What about the WGC's? If anchoring is potentially banned in 7 of the 9 biggest tournaments per year it's not worth the fight is it?
Michael Collins (3:07 PM)
Maybe two majors if the Masters does their own thing. But remember, the PGA Tour has NO majors. So why would they care what the majors did? And three of the WGC's are played on US soil and run by the PGA Tour so they would potentially allow anchoring.
Look into your crystal ball -- who is world's #1 at the end of the Fed Ex cup playoffs?
Michael Collins (3:08 PM)
Eric (Austin, TX)
Hey Michael. They announced that the Mississippi tournament is now sponsored by Sanderson Farms. Can equipment manufacturers (Titleist, Nike, Ping) sponsor tournaments? Seems like a good fit, and would drive revenue up for the Tour.
Michael Collins (3:09 PM)
They could but financially it's not a good move. They get enough from their players being seen during the tournament and would Nike be happy if a bunch of TaylorMade guys were winning the event? Too risky.
Why in your tweet are you saying Stevie is doing his keep? Scott rarely plays and when he has he has been invisible except for this tourney. Last week he back doored into a top 10.
Michael Collins (3:11 PM)
The point was about people yelling "cheater" at Keegan but not Adam. A joke, because Stevie is known for going into the crowd.
Are there any college golfers you have your eye on right now?
To person posting as Shoshana from Boston, hey it's flattering, but this is the third chat in a row over here. And as I post under my real name, a tad irritating. Cease and desist?
Michael Collins (3:13 PM)
Well the tournament I watched a few holes today was at UF. It was the girls teams.
Billy Baroo (Peoria)
Did you ever let your man make a 10 while you were on the bag? Daly is a big draw at the gate but nobody enjoys watching a pro golfer make a number like that. What exactly happened out there on #3? Looks like he got stuck in the trees, couple of unplayable lies. This is old hat for Long John...
Michael Collins (3:16 PM)
7 was the highest score I ever caddied, but had a couple on par 4's and par 5's. Daly IS a big draw when the big names don't play, but he's a big draw for two reasons. Some people wanna see him succeed (about 60% of crowd) and others wanna see that guy who will make a ten.
Favorite golf book?
Michael Collins (3:18 PM)
Fiction: Missing LinksNon-Fiction: A Good Walk SpoiledBut there are so many really great golf books it's almost not a fair question.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Prior to February 6, 2013 in Arizona, When was the last time that a PGA Tour Event was postponed due to snow?
Michael Collins (3:20 PM)
other than that event, it was 2005 in Georgia at the BellSouth Classic. I was caddying for Omar Uresti and we were on the course when it started snowing!
What are the chances that Vijay fakes an injury if he has to leave the game for a long period of time?
Michael Collins (3:23 PM)
Vijay would never "fake" an injury. Not in his nature. If he got suspended for admitting use it would have to be made public according to the Tour's rules. Of course, they are extremely smart attorneys and the wording is tricky enough that it reminds me of Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon, "The Art of Fighting without Fighting"
Both Shoshanas from Boston are clearly dudes sitting behind their keyboards. Weird. Regardless, what ever happened to Stewart Cink? Is he still around? Haven't heard his name in a while...
Michael Collins (3:26 PM)
The REAL Shoshana is definitely a woman, with enough golf knowledge that she'll be a guest on my podcast once I get them going. Just to set the record straight. As for Stewart Cink he's been going thru a MASSIVE slump but remember he had a chance to win earlier this year. He's just never been the same since winning the Open Championship.
If you were a tournament director would you give Daly an invite? He's a big draw, but there are a lot of good players looking to make a living on tour, including young guys like Cantlay and Speith
Michael Collins (3:28 PM)
Most events have at least 4 sponsors invites so one of them should be used on at least one golfer that will help sell tix.
Do you see Sergio winning that elusive major before it's all said and done for him?
Michael Collins (3:29 PM)
Nope. Sergio himself said he's not good enough to win a major. And if HE doesn't believe it, how in the world can I?
Cink is still on the outs with the golf gods for taking that Open from Tom Watson!
Keith H (Seattle)
How about Freddie going with the kids on the Captain's Picks this year and getting the next generation some experience in team match play? Stricker and Furyk are automatics only. We know what they can do. Farrell's response to this was: "Oh God!"
Michael Collins (3:31 PM)
Shouldn't we at least get thru the FIRST major of the year before we start worrying about OCTOBER golf?
What set off David Berganio Jr. prior to his temper tantrum?
Michael Collins (3:32 PM)
Couple of bad tee shots and a three jack.
"Real" Shoshana posts WAY better questions/opinions. Just sayin' It's an awesome 70+ degree day in Denver, heading to the range. What's one thing I can work on to improve accuracy with my long irons? Thanks MC, have a great weekend.
Michael Collins (3:35 PM)
The best thing you can do for long irons is give yourself a bigger target! Most people have the same size target for a 4 iron as a PW. That's just SO unrealistic. Triple the size of your target and allow yourself success. It'll help with confidence which will also dial your swing in.
Dear God, why would you ever want someone like Stricker on your team. It's not like he can make putts, or be a valuable coaching resource :p (that said doubt he'll play unless he makes it automatically)
Tim (Los Angeles)
What happens if Vijay wins this week? Tour would be in an awkward spot, no?
Michael Collins (3:37 PM)
EXTREMELY!! I just did a video blog about it...http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=9056469
Andy (Los Angeles)
Any news on Anthony Kim? He's fallen off the face of the map...
Michael Collins (3:38 PM)
None, it's almost scary how he's vanished. Maybe we should send out a search party?
If Vijay won this weekend is he required to speak to the media after the tournament is over?
Michael Collins (3:40 PM)
It's strongly suggested but if he said no they can't take the trophy away from him! And if they discipline him, no one will know! Jokes on who?
Keith H (Seattle)
The best way to be more accurate is hit the ball and then call the shot.
Michael Collins (3:40 PM)
Now that made me bust a gut laughing!
I have a hard time believing that even when he's at his best that Rory has more fire power than Tiger at his best. I realize that I'm not able to see these guys play in person week in week out so who do you think would have the edge?
Michael Collins (3:42 PM)
Tiger at his best right now versus Rory at his best right now in a four day stroke play MAJOR event would be won by Tiger on the 4th playoff hole. And we would be crying when it was over.
Is Mike Weir done? What happened to his game?
Michael Collins (3:44 PM)
He's done. He got hurt, tried to come back too soon, messed up his swing, never fully recovered and now can't put four good rounds together. Shame cause I like him.
Thanks, actually buying a hybrid is probably the easiest thing to do!! Best snide remark/insult you've heard one golfer drop on another?
Michael Collins (3:45 PM)
Chi Chi and Trevino had a legendary exchange that is still the best I've ever heard of but it's way too racial to post.
Chris K (Wisconsin)
Not to start a fight but Farrell Evans said that Rory has a light schedule in part to maintain his cool factor. Agree? And is that why Bob Harig hasn't had a chat lately? Also, you rule.
Michael Collins (3:47 PM)
Well thank you. I disagree with Farrell. I think Rory realizes that with all the international golf he plays, his downtime is just as important as his work time. It's a very mature thing at his age to know what your body needs to be at it's peak when it's game time.
How does the media lottery work at Augusta? Have you played the course before?
Michael Collins (3:49 PM)
Never. Last year was my first time covering the Masters and I didn't win the lottery. Media puts there names in and very few get pulled to play Monday with the Sunday hole locations. My fingers are crossed already for this year!
Michael Collins (3:51 PM)
And Chris, Bob hasn't had a chat because he's interviewing players at the course and gathering stuff for his columns. He and Farrell bust their butts writing. Me? Not so much. haha
I think most sports fans in the US are fairly used to the idea of an athlete playing while under investigation, or appealing a suspension at this point. But the whole tour would maybe vacate his results from this time period (when he's presumably not using) if found guilty, is really awkward and odd
Michael Collins (3:54 PM)
Believe me when I tell you, the tour is gonna play the "if we wait long enough, it'll go away" game. I'd do the same thing if it was me, the longer it goes without Vijay winning or contending, the better.
Hey Michael! I was just wondering what do you think has been lately the reason for Tiger's reemergence short iron accuracy, putting, etc? And what exactly is wrong with his driving, like why does it always end up in the rough? Thanks
Michael Collins (3:57 PM)
I think the putting tip from Stricker, along with now trusting the swing change he's been working on for so long. It looks like now he's just playing golf instead of "working it out" on the course. That's a big thing for Tiger. As far as his driving, his greens in regulation will tell you how truly bad driving is and Tiger's hasn't been horrible when you look at it that way.
I dont get the brouhaha over Vijay. This is the land of civilization in America, even criminals are let out on bail until the trial. Why not give VJ the same latitude?
Michael Collins (3:59 PM)
Vijay is the one who won't speak. If I was there I would at least wanna talk about his game and the golf course but to not speak at all... that's no good for anyone. Granted, some of my brothers asking questions would not be able to contain their questions to "on course" things. But, that ain't their fault either.
Do you agree with Andy North's assessment that Tiger has not won the Master's since 2005 because he did not make enough putts inside 10 ft? Some say the course doesn't setup well for him but, he won in 2005 after they made all the course changes in 2002 and has been in the top 4 2006-2011. Since his iron play is back on one would expect he will have way more birdie looks, No?
Michael Collins (4:02 PM)
Lorraine... ask me that on Monday and I promise to answer it to start the chat!!See how fast this goes?!Same time/Same Place Monday.Have a great weekend everyone!Hit me on twitter @ESPNCaddieor email me ESPNCaddie@gmail.comMC
