Frank (La Marque,Tx)
Was the Longhorns spring game what you expected or better than what you expected in terms of overall performance?
Sean Adams (12:06 PM)
It was what I expected save for the fact that I thought the defensive line would look a little better. For all of the conversation based around the offense, this Texas team will win or lose based on the play of the defense.
Which true freshman do you think will have the biggest impact this fall?
Sean Adams (12:09 PM)
I think Darius James is the guy who will make the most impact on the 2013 Longhorns. He will get a lot of play at guard and the Longhorns need him, too.
Dustin (Las Colinas)
Do you think our defense really gets better this year? If so, then with a down Big 12, is it reasonable to assume we win more games and contend?
Sean Adams (12:17 PM)
I think they can be better. I just really didn't see this team playing with the passion that I thought I would during the spring game. They can be better, but they have a ton of work to do. With that said, they have made strides since the Alamo Bowl.
You call it ... Swoopes redshirt? If that's a 'No' then would you see him contending for serious playing time this year?
Sean Adams (12:23 PM)
I hope he does redshirt, but I have a hard time thinking Texas will not want to play him. David Ash is the guy and should be the guy, but if there is a question about the backup, Swoopes might be the best option.
Just visited Austin and UT attending the NCAA basketball tourney at Ervin Center. Loved Soco but a bit disappointed with the Ervin Center for basketball environment and top-class facility. Does UT Athletics have a new facility on the drawing board? And how safe do you think Barnes is as head coach?
Sean Adams (12:30 PM)
I don't know that the DRUM is going anywhere anytime soon. The practice facility next door is about as good as they come in the country. Barnes seems about as safe as they come, because he had a young team this year. Once the turnover is settled, we'll see how the team plays. 2013-14 is a important year for Barnes.
When does the depth chart come out?
Sean Adams (12:35 PM)
The real depth chart won't come out until the fall. The important thing is that the coaching staff knows what they need to expect from guys coming on campus in the summer.
What position are you most concerned about heading into summer? From the bits and pieces of the spring game that I watched, it looked like nothing has changed as far as stopping the run. Are we looking at another year of watching opposing running backs run through gapping holes in our defense? Last question: Who are the top 3 most important players for us this year that must play well for Texas to go anywhere? Thanks Sean, really appreciate what you do!
Sean Adams (12:47 PM)
I thought the defensive line struggled in the spring game. They did not look great but they are also missing some of their key pieces. I think they will be fine but again they have some work to do. As for the three most important? Jordan Hicks, David Ash and Jackson Jeffcoat are my choices.
Tom (San Antonio)
I have a bad, bad, bad feeling that Texas loses a few recruiting battles to A&M this weekend at their spring game. Game on ESPN, being in the SEC, and some guy that won the Heisman all lead to elite 2014 and 2015 (looking at you Dylan Mack) guys committing this weekend. Any reason to believe otherwise?
Sean Adams (12:52 PM)
Texas is getting its foot in the door at the right time with the right recruits and will be fine. I don't know that they will lose any more than the natural movement that happens with recruits.
Frank (Texas City)
Johnathan Gray emerged as the top RB last season. Are the coaches still committed to giving Malcolm Brown a fair share of the load?
Sean Adams (12:55 PM)
Yes, Texas and most people believe that having two or three running backs is a must, and Brown is that good. Brown is an NFL back. He will get his share of the load.
Horn1515 (Beijing, China)
I know I am biased, but am I the only one who thinks Kendal Yancey-Harris will make a big difference for the Horns bball program? He is a big, strong point who plays great defense, can hit the three and is a total team player. Your thoughts?
Sean Adams (12:58 PM)
He very well could. This roster needs to be solidified and they need to develop the scoring. 2013-14 is going to be an important year, but it could be a tough year if certain things don't shake out.
If Swoopes does not redshirt, either this team is in a TON of trouble or Mack should be fired the second Swoopes loses his RS. If Ash plays well, there is absolutely no need to waste a year of eligibility for what looks to be our QB of the future. Would Mack really be that dumb?
Sean Adams (1:01 PM)
There is a difference of opinion on dumb. I hope the kid redshirts, but he could very well be the best option other than David Ash as QB in 2013. Texas QBs under Mack Brown have played better with the chance to redshirt. Let's hope that he can.
Any news on the Cayleb Jones situation?
Sean Adams (1:01 PM)
There is no news right now and I wouldn't expect any until there is resolution.
Do you think any of the QBs will transfer?
Sean Adams (1:03 PM)
That's a hard question but right now I say no.
Marc (Ft Worth)
Is Swoopes really the best option at backup? I saw Brewer have some real zip on his passes, and it would seem that Overstreet can run any package that Swoopes would, right? It just seems like folks look at Swoopes as Vince Young, the Second Coming.
Sean Adams (1:07 PM)
I don't know if he is the best option. I raised the question based on the spring game. Overstreet probably has the best arm of all of the quarterbacks. He and Brewer have had their moments, but I think everyone is praying that Ash stays healthy.
Rich (Los Angeles)
Who are the top teams in the Big 12 going into the new season?
Sean Adams (1:09 PM)
Oklahoma State, TCU and, yes, Texas. I'll be shocked if the Big 12 champion does not come from that group.
It's crazy how quickly the recruiting momentum in the state has changed. Elite recruits who four years ago would've been Texas commits by now are 50-50 between UT and the Aggies. Is winning the only solution for Texas?
Sean Adams (1:12 PM)
Well, they don't play Texas A&M, so that can't be huge. The Aggies had a Heisman winner and the newness of the SEC. They leveraged that perfectly, and that's what they should do. I still say this is where Texas A
Sean Adams (1:13 PM)
Thanks for the questions. See you next week!
