James Walker (4:01 PM)
Let's begin our AFC East chat.
If Geno Smith drops to the Bills, will they go after him even though they acquired Kolb?
James Walker (4:03 PM)
Anything is possible. But I don't expect it, Steve. The Bills invested a decent amount of money into Kolb, at least for the next year or so. Buffalo has other needs and I expect the team to fix those issues and get a QB in the second or third round.
Do you expect a team to pick Lattimore before the fourth round? Also, do you think the Dolphins would take a shot given how many picks they have?
James Walker (4:05 PM)
I expect Lattimore to go higher than the fourth round, but it won't be to Miami. The Dolphins have two backs with Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas. They will fill other needs first. Lattimore could go in the third round. But a team might get eager and look at the potential and draft higher than that.
James Walker (4:10 PM)
Ok, having a few connection issues. I think I'm fine now.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm not convinced the Bills should draft a quarterback this year. It's a bad QB class and they'll probably end up with another Trent Edwards. If they don't draft a QB this year, and none of their current QBs step up next season, the Bills will have a very high draft pick in what should be a much better QB class.
James Walker (4:11 PM)
The Bills have to draft a QB this year. Kevin Kolb is not the long-term solution. If the Bills don't draft someone they can develop, they will end up like Arizona two years from now and still searching for an answer. Kolb is what he is. He has some tools but a lot of weaknesses. Kolb is a stopgap option for the Bills until they can develop someone else.
Greg (Ft Myers)
Do you think Miami should take Tavon Austin with their 1st pick?
James Walker (4:13 PM)
He's one of my favorite prospects in this draft, but not a good target for Miami at No. 12. The Dolphins have enough receivers after a strong free agency. They probably have too many with Davone Bess now fourth on the depth chart. Miami should fill other needs in the first round.
James Walker (4:13 PM)
The Dolphins need someone to block for QB Ryan Tannehill. All the WRs won't mean much if Tannehill is on his back next season.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
How did the Jets Do in the Offseason?
James Walker (4:15 PM)
Not good, but the team was hamstrung. Due to a bad cap situation, the Jets were forced to go for bargain-basement additions. New York may have some sleepers. Willie Colon and Mike Goodson are players who could be productive. But they are not going to lead New York to the playoffs. I think this will be a long rebuild.
Frank (Ballston Spa, NY)
I know Matthieu is not a Philbin type of guy...but do you really think he would never take a chance on a player if his skill set is what they are looking for?
James Walker (4:16 PM)
I don't see it, Frank. Not in Miami with Joe Philbin. The Dolphins are really strict with character issues.
I agree it's unlikely that the Bills are gonna win anything with Kolb/Jackson/Corp, but at the same time my worry is they end up with a high draft pick next year and there's a better QB prospect available to them, but they pass him up just because they took a QB this year.
James Walker (4:17 PM)
If the Bills pick a QB high this year they have to put their resources into developing that player. That is why Buffalo is extremely detailed in looking at all the QBs this year. The Bills cannot afford to get this position wrong.
Can the media give Ireland some credit for putting together a great offseason? His moves set him up so he doesnt have to reach and lets him take best player available in the draft.
James Walker (4:18 PM)
Have you read the AFC East blog lately. Jeff Ireland is getting plenty of credit for landing big free agents. However, you can't go too far, because it all comes down to what happens on the field. Remember the Bills of 2012?
KB (Fort lauderdale)
The Dolphins overspent in some areas and let go of some good players. The one area I think was bad to overspend was at LB. The LBs from last years unit, aside from Misi, were pretty good and were good cover lbs, which u need for Brady and his tight ends. Do u think changing the LB core was a good/necessary move? And is Ellerbe a bad cover guy like I have heard?
James Walker (4:20 PM)
The Dolphins got younger and more athletic. It wasn't a huge need now, but due to the contracts, Miami would need to address the issue next year. The Dolphins were just ahead of the curve and took care of it now while they had tons of cap room.
When Miami nab Brent Grimes, how big of a pickup is that?
James Walker (4:23 PM)
A lot of it depends on healthy, Steve. Grimes was a great player two seasons ago, but I don't how well he will play post injury.
I believe Miami should trade down and acquire more picks for this year or next. Your thoughts.
James Walker (4:24 PM)
Miami has 11 picks in this draft. The Dolphins have more than enough picks. If anything, Miami should trade up to get a higher-rated player on its board.
Do you see the Bills trading down in the 1st round to aquire more draft picks to fill big holes? Such as DB, WR, and LB?
James Walker (4:25 PM)
The Bills are a different situation. They only have six picks this year. They could definitely use more by trading down. Now that QB isn't as much a huge need, the door is open to do so at No. 8.
Matthew Sawyer (South Jersey)
What can the Jets do to replace Keller?
James Walker (4:26 PM)
The draft is probably New York's best chance. The Jets don't have much money to do anything significant at TE in free agency.
gene (Red Bank New Jersey)
Hi James, Can you see the Dolphins picking Kenny Vascarro FS at pick #12 if Ireland decides to stay put and address the CB and OL in the second Rd while taking a TE in the 3rd?
James Walker (4:28 PM)
I mentioned this yesterday in the AFC East blog as a possibility. Vaccaro could be a "best player available" type of pick. The Dolphins are decent, but not great, with Chris Clemons. Vaccaro could eventually take over long-term but also could fill in immediately as a nickel corner. He's very talented.
Who do you think geno smith will be drafted by
James Walker (4:30 PM)
Although I wouldn't do it, I don't expect Geno Smith to make it out of the top 10. The Chiefs are a smokescreen. But the Browns, Bills and Jets are all possibilities. Arizona landed Carson Palmer, so I'm not sure where the Cardinals stand anymore.
Charles Hollenback (Buffalo)
Is scheme or talent more to blame for the 2012 Bills run defense woes? Can a new DC and scheme fix it?
James Walker (4:32 PM)
The Bills definitely could have been coached better. I didn't understand Buffalo's defensive concepts at all last year. It didn't utilize the talent it had and seemed maximize its weaknesses at LB. However, Buffalo's players deserve some blame as well. Every player on that side of the football needs to play better in 2013. I think Mike Pettine will get more out of this group.
Would Lattimore be a good 3rd round pick for the JEts?
James Walker (4:34 PM)
I think Lattimore would be a good third-round pick for just about any team, but not the Jets. New York has a lot of holes on offense and needs players who can contribute immediately. Lattimore may not get back to form for another year or two. But he could be worth the wait.
Burnett/Dansby/Smith created 4 total turnovers the past 2 seasons. Enough Said.
James Walker (4:35 PM)
That is a legit complaint. The Dolphins had decent players on defense but not many playmakers. That's a reason Miami let all these players go.
Justin Zonneville (Buffalo, NY)
Would you be surprised to see New England grabbing a quarterback within the first 3 round of the draft?
James Walker (4:36 PM)
Unless the Patriots trade Ryan Mallett, I don't see that happening.
Charles (Chicago, IL)
How thin is the ice that Rex Ryan is skating on going into 2013?
James Walker (4:37 PM)
If Rex Ryan has another season like 2012, I doubt he will be head coach of the Jets this time next year. It's a big season for him.
If the Dolphins do trade up, who do you think they should target?
James Walker (4:39 PM)
Kyle (Burlington, Vermont)
With Keller now on the roster, who will be the primary blocking TE for Miami? Or will they need to look to the draft/FA still?
James Walker (4:41 PM)
That's an interesting question, Kyle. Keller and Michael Egnew certainly are not blocking tight ends. The important thing for Miami was to find a pass catcher to help QB Ryan Tannehill. The Dolphins will get a run blocker later.
The Jets are going to be horrible. I wouldn't be surprised if they win 3 games.
James Walker (4:42 PM)
It's too early to make firm predictions for 2013. However, I'm not optimistic about the Jets this year. I think it's going to be a rough year.
Barry Sanders (Detroit)
The JEts have a total scarcity of talent and playmakers on both sides of the field. Why would they trade away the best defensive player in the NFL? He shuts down half the field
James Walker (4:43 PM)
This is all about 2014 for the Jets, Barry. You have to consider New York is building for the future. The Jets know they are not contenders right now. Darrelle Revis is going to command a huge salary when he becomes a free agent. The Jets can't pay it. So why not get something for him now instead of losing him for zero.
do u see the dolphins signing dwight freeny or eric winston?
James Walker (4:48 PM)
Eric Winston is more of a possibility. The Dolphins are examining their options right now but keeping in touch with Winston. Of course, it's possible another team can sign him first before the Dolphins figure out what they want to do.
Does Alex Ogletree make sense for the Bills at number 8 with his apparent ability to play either inside or outside LB?
James Walker (4:50 PM)
Considering Buffalo is going to use more 3-4, LBs are always possible. I think WR and S and G are also strong possibilities.
Greg Buckner (Cambridge, MA)
How do you see the Pats filling their holes at WR?
James Walker (4:52 PM)
Things are pretty thin in free agency at that position. Unless the Patriots re-sign Brandon Lloyd, there isn't much out there. The draft is the best chance for New England to add legit talent at the position. However, Bill Belichick has an awful track record drafting receivers.
Jets 4 Life (ER, NJ)
Why don't the Pats take a look at Heyward-Bey? Good locker room guy and he's a burner on the outside. Low risk too
James Walker (4:54 PM)
Heyward-Bay signed with the Indianapolis Colts on a one-year contract. He's going to play with Andrew Luck.
Jeff (NY, NY)
The Jets are 1 player away, the only issue is the player is Tom Brady.
James Walker (4:55 PM)
I was wondering where you were going with that one. The Jets need at least a year or two to get back into contention.
Will (Miami Fl)
do you see the dolphins jumping into the Revis talks and then restructure him?
James Walker (4:57 PM)
The Jets are not trading Darrelle Revis to the Dolphins. It's just not happening, folks. The Jets would not want to help a rival beat them twice a year. That would be a poor business decision.
jackson revell (orlando )
where do uthink the dolphins would have to trade up to get dee milliner
James Walker (4:58 PM)
Yes, Milliner will not be there at No. 12. The Dolphins would have to trade up if they want him.
I hate the Dolphins new logo. How could they drop the classic helmet? What do you think about it?
James Walker (4:59 PM)
I'm not really big on logos. It's not something that I care about or pay much attention to. Remember, I'm not a fan of any team. I pay more attention to how the teams play, not logos and how they look.
James Walker (5:00 PM)
Thanks for the great questions, everyone. Be sure to check out the AFC East blog for all the latest updates.
