Chat: Brandon Rios-Mike Alvarado II
Welcome to SportsNation! On Friday, we're going inside the boxing ring when Brandon Rios stops by to chat about his epic junior welterweight bout last Saturday night against Mike Alvarado, a fight Alvarado won via unanimous decision.
Alvarado (34-1, 23 KO) won the rematch of their October fight that Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO) won via seventh round TKO. With Saturday's win, Alvarado captured the vacant interim WBO junior welterweight title. Rios-Alvarado II is an early candidate for fight of the year, and Rios is already calling for the trilogy.
Send your questions now and join Rios Friday at 11:30 a.m. ET!

Brandon is here!
Brandon do you think it was a mistake to take the rematch with Alvarado,I know you were looking for bigger fights with Pacman, Marquez or Bradley.
Brandon Rios (11:26 AM)
No. Honestly, it didn't bother me taking the fight. He thought he won the first one, so of course I gave him the rematch. Hopefully he will give me the chance for a rematch.
Juan (Houston Texas)
You were having a lot of success with your jab starting the fight, almost had him down with a jab. Abandoned it for a while, and used more jab towards end of fight, and seemed to work. Do you feel not using your jab more often hurt your chances of winning?
Brandon Rios (11:27 AM)
Yeah. I went back and watched the video. I did get away from my jab. That was my mistake. I had him hurt all of the time with the punch. We'll go back and watch the fight and do it all over again.
Mario (Houston, TX)
Great fight Brandon, can't wait for the 3rd fight. In this past fight and the one with Abril, seems like movement seems to be an issue for you. What can be done to over come that in the future? Maybe body work?
Brandon Rios (11:28 AM)
With this fight, I did look slow. I was heavy on my feet. He ran a lot. I didn't get any punches on him because he ran so much. I didn't get what I wanted off. It happens. I can not bring time back. He stuck to his game plan. I'm ready for the third one now.
brandon how come you have such a good chin, do you train specific for that like mayweather with his neck weight or is it just gods will and your born with a rock hard chin and Iron will
Brandon Rios (11:29 AM)
It's just naturally like that. You're born with a chin or you're not. You're physically and mentally ready for any punches. The fights that I have, you have to be ready. I go in there when I fight. Getting hit by any punch could hurt me, so you have to be ready.
Hi brandon, can you talk about your state of mind right now and how you deal with your first loss
Brandon Rios (11:30 AM)
At first it was horrible. The next day it hit me bad. I was down. I was in shock. My wife helped me through it. She helped me with my mind. In the long run when I watched the fight, I did not lose that fight. I have it 7-5 or with some of the rounds, maybe a draw. Being around my family helps too.
jose rey (san diego)
hi brandon. do you feel like mike ran the last 3 round?
Brandon Rios (11:31 AM)
Yeah. That's the reason why I thought I won the fight. He didn't do anything. He ran the last three rounds. He didn't connect. I was the one doing the more damage. The more chasing. The more hitting. That's why I thought I won those last three rounds.
Michael (Cincinnati) [via mobile]
Bam bam, thanks man. How hard is it to prepare yourself for that kind of fight?
Brandon Rios (11:32 AM)
It was kind of hard. It was my mistake. We were preparing for another brawl. That's how I messed up. It was our fault. But it was a good job. We cut the ring off. But when we did that, I didn't pursue more. Next time we'll be ready for another game plan. Whatever he brings.
James (San Francisco )
What happened? You were cutting off the ring nicely in the first 2 rounds, n beating Alvarado up.
Brandon Rios (11:33 AM)
He didn't really escape me. In some of the later rounds, I had scored close, because I didn't do much in the pursuit. I was cutting the ring off, but not throwing the punches. The last round, he ran the whole round. What can we do about that?
Bob Arum has stated he doesn't want to match you and Alvarado up right away; are you going to push him to make the 3rd fight ASAP?
Brandon Rios (11:33 AM)
Hopefully they do. I gave him the opportunity to get his revenge right away. Why can't he give me the same chance? I think if his manager and my manager talk to Bob Arum, we can make the fight happen right away. I need my revenge.
There is talk of the 3rd fight being in Denver, have you ever trained or fought anywhere with such a high altitude?
Brandon Rios (11:34 AM)
I fought one time early in my career in Denver. The fight and everything like that, that's up to the managers and Bob Arum. That's not Mike's and my jobs. If it's in Denver, we'll go out there and train in the high altitude, but that's not up to us.
Robert was pleading with you to throw more combinations down the stretch instead of single shots, what prevented you from doing so?
Brandon Rios (11:35 AM)
It was the fact that Mike did run a lot. Robert did tell me to throw more. But every time I got in with him close, he hugged me, held me and then he ran. It was hard, but next time we'll work on different tactics.
What adjustments will you be making in the 3rd fight? He seemed to getting that over hand right to you alot. We support you down here in Austin TX bro.
Brandon Rios (11:36 AM)
I definitely want to fight the third match. We're going to go in with a different gameplan. We'll do different things. And I'll stick to my gameplan and not brawl it out. It will be a different story.
will you you consider dancing with the stars?
Brandon Rios (11:37 AM)
My Dancing with the Stars is in the ring. I don't do that stuff. I dance in the ring and that's it.
Marissa (Torrance, ca)
So many people have came out to support you, your fan base has grown how does that make you feel win or lose your fans are there for u
Brandon Rios (11:38 AM)
It feels great. I want to thank everybody from California that showed their support. I always fight my heart out for you guys. It is a big blessing to come from where I started to now, it's awesome. I will never forget the fans. Your name being chanted by the crowd, it gives you drive.
George Rocco (La Habra)
If the trilogy is not available for you next fight would you want to fight Adrian Broner or Danny Garcia next?
Brandon Rios (11:39 AM)
I never choose my fights. That's what he gets paid for. He looks out for my best interests. If it's not Mike, then hopefully he'll find me a good opponent. The third fight is going to happen. I don't know when, but it is going to happen.
Dimas (Manhattan )
Be honest: did Alvarado have you hurt in the third round?
Brandon Rios (11:40 AM)
The third round, he did stop me. I wobbled. He did hurt me. Not bad. He just stunned me. He wobbled me. Stunned me? Yes. Hurt me? No.
Brandon Rios (11:40 AM)
To all my fans. Thanks for the support. I always fight my heart out for you. See you next time in the ring.
