Stephania Bell (3:02 PM)
Greetings everyone: Glad to see so many of you here already! Let's get to your questions...
Matthew (Northern California)
So what's the deal with Giancarlo Stanton? Is he going to the DL? Is this an injury that will linger for a while even after he does start playing?
Stephania Bell (3:05 PM)
Matthew: Have not heard that that move is imminent. As far as lingering, I think he's been dealing with this shoulder soreness for a while which is why he ended up getting an MRI. He actually was supposed to take BP today (not sure if that happened) and is expected to play this week. If it continues to be a problem though, the DL may be inevitable.
Jeff S. (Vermont)
Hey Stephania, any good news on Matt Garza? Literally have not heard anything since the start of the season.
Stephania Bell (3:07 PM)
Jeff: I know I've talked about Garza somewhere along the way...perhaps it wasn't the good news you were hoping for. He is still expected to make a return in the first half of May but whenever a pitcher is working his way back and building up arm strength, you have to consider the timeline fluid, at least until it looks like the week of his actual return.
Any news on Jason Motte? I'm in a league with 3 DL spots and have Greinke, Aybar and Corey Hart. I want to drop Motte if he'll be getting TJ surgery but don't want to drop in and then hear that he's going to pitch this season. Is he a safe drop in that sense?
Stephania Bell (3:09 PM)
Mike: Nothing new. The team was going to see if he could resume throwing by May 1. He's not doing any throwing yet. I think it's more likely he ends up having surgery than not.
brad (harrisburg, pa)
Matt Kemp's slow start, let's discuss? Will he be hot by June?
Stephania Bell (3:11 PM)
Brad: I'd like that to happen. Have him on one of my teams, keep thinking I'm going to take him out of my lineup, then am reluctant to do it, then wish I had. It's hard to know when he's going to get the groove back. I am not surprised that it's taking a while; it often does following labral repair. I do think June is reasonable, certainly wouldn't drop him.
Jim (The Chi)
I should be paying attention in med school but im here with you... one has to have priorities. Where exactly was curtis granderson's fracture and do you see it zapping his power when he returns?
Stephania Bell (3:12 PM)
Jim: You could argue you're participating in medical education related activities...He actually showed me exactly where the fracture spot was this spring and it was just about an inch above the wrist. Small crack, healing well and while I think he'll benefit from the rehab games he'll get in order to get his version of spring training at bats, I don't think there will be any loss of power.
naive to think that Reyes can be back in less than three months? bad sprain, to be sure, but no surgery required and no structural damage to the ankle.
Stephania Bell (3:16 PM)
Alex: When there's a severe sprain, there's some kind of structural damage. Even if no surgery is required, there's reason to be concerned about his sprain. These are tough to recover from and in addition to getting stability back around the ankle, it's really tough for athletes to get their confidence in movement back, their agility, coordination...and something so important for Reyes is his quickness and speed. Three months I think is hopeful, would love to see him sooner but I certainly won't count on it.
Johnny Cueto, they've said 3-4 weeks. Once he comes back, what concerns should I have going forward? Are there likely to be lingering effects?
Stephania Bell (3:17 PM)
David: Thoughts with your city today. I think we should plan on a little longer. The longer he's kept from throwing, the more strength he has to build back up. Most guys are out in the 4-6 week range but if they heal well, shouldn't be an ongoing problem.
In your opinion would Lawrie be at a great risk of injury by playing 2nd base?
Stephania Bell (3:18 PM)
mj: Not necessarily. He's played it before. My understanding from talking with my colleague Keith Law about it was that the feeling was he didn't have the agility to play the position consistently.
Hi Stephania! Heard A.Ramirez may be on DL longer! Any update on his possible return and that of Kubel also? Thanks alot
Stephania Bell (3:20 PM)
Ethan: Tried to find out some more specifics about the Ramirez "knee sprain" and couldn't. So not really possible to project an accurate timetable. Never expected him to come back after the minimum though given that this was a repeat injury from the spring. Until the team updates us a little further, there's no real news to offer.
Daytona Beach-y (Fla.)
Stephania how's Beachy doing on his rehab and when do expect/know anyhting on his return date? Thanks alot
Stephania Bell (3:21 PM)
I see what you did there Daytona...He's throwing bullpens. By all accounts things are going well. His rehab track has him returning right around All-Star Break. He'd like to return just before but it will all depend how his elbow responds once he works his way up to rehab starts.
Is there any injury update on Mike Morse?
Stephania Bell (3:22 PM)
Jason: The thought is that he's hoping to return today but I haven't seen anything official yet.
Any idea on when Brian McCann will be coming back?
Stephania Bell (3:25 PM)
KMc: I think we're still a couple, maybe 3 weeks away. They're going to let him try his hand at catching in ext spring trg this week (so far he's only been hitting) and how his shoulder feels, how he performs will help determine when a rehab assignment can begin. I still expect them to gradually increase his playing time behind the plate given the labral surgery, so I'm thinking first week of May is looking like a possibility.
Your thoughts on Big Papi? Have you seen video of his at bats at AAA? Thanks for chatting!
Stephania Bell (3:26 PM)
Dan: I haven't seen video but I've talked with someone who watched him play. Sounds like he was hitting well and getting a little more confident with running. It was an illness that kept him out for a bit. Sounds like he'll declare himself ready to return by the end of the week.
Francisco struck out 6 in 3 innings in his rehab start. What's his timeline and what do you expect from him this year?
Stephania Bell (3:28 PM)
Dave: I think the thing (and I know it's obvious) that is most important is the injury was to his non-throwing arm. So while he had to wait until it had healed to a degree before he could throw, now it's just the buildup of the arm strength to get back to the team. It looks like that could happen within the next 2-3 weeks.
Mike (Belmont, CA)
Do you think Kipnis' elbow injury is something to be concerned about, or should we see him back soon? Thank you!
Stephania Bell (3:30 PM)
Mike: He's downplaying it, but it's strange. Soreness that appeared out of nowhere? And he's had soreness now in both elbows within the last couple months. Odd. The suggestion is that he'll be back soon but given that it's hard to define exactly what's going on, not confident that this is something that will be completely behind him when he returns.
Any updates on Aaron Hill? DL stint likely?
Stephania Bell (3:32 PM)
Clark: I think it's looking more and more like Hill will head to the DL. Know he went for an MRI, have not heard the results yet. But yes, think it's likely given that it's not improving.
What is going on with Adam Eaton? Is he coming back in May?
Stephania Bell (3:34 PM)
Connie: That's the plan. Of course, the biggest test - throwing - hasn't happened yet. So far he's been taking BP but when he resumes throwing, especially as he increases the vigor of his throws, that's what will really test his sprained ligament.
JJ (Portland, ME)
Fast Freddie Freeman... is he on schedule or will he be out longer?
Stephania Bell (3:37 PM)
JJ: You speak for many. Lots of Freeman questions. Unfortunately, I don't have many answers. In the early phase of this injury, there's no swinging the bat. That obviously will test how his oblique is doing but it's also the thing that is the biggest risk to set him back. During rehab they will assess when he is ready to try it and go from there. He clearly wants it to be the minimum (seeing as he didn't even want to go) but if they went to the lengths of putting him on the DL, they're clearly not going to rush him back. No official timetable yet.
Any update on Corey hart? Is the end of May still the target/expected return date?
Stephania Bell (3:39 PM)
Dan: Seems like it. Once they moved him to the 60-day DL it just relaxed the timetable (maybe to help keep him from pushing too hard to get back). I believe May 30 is the soonest he can return but this far out at least, it looks like that will be the target.
Stephania, with the injury to Reyes, do you think this will hinder his stolen bases for the season? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:41 PM)
Rachel: Yes, I don't see how it can't. I think it will take him a while to get confident with that ankle for every aspect of his game AND he has to get past the memory of this injury happening on steal where he hesitated. Tough to do and the athlete only gets de-senstitized after doing it over and over again for a while. So I think the rest of this season will be him working his way back.
He isn't injured (yet) but Lance Berkman is supposed to sit all week while Texas plays in Chicago against the Cubs. Is he still capable of playing the field at all or is just a DH all year?
Stephania Bell (3:43 PM)
Adam: They're keeping him out because of the cold weather. Reflective of the fact that his knee situation is chronic and while he seems to be serviceable for them at DH, I highly doubt he sees the field, at least not much.
Mark Previous (DL)
Mark Teixiera...reliable for power once he gets back?
Stephania Bell (3:45 PM)
Not counting on it. Or at least not consistently. I could see him coming back, maybe struggling a bit at first, then playing well BUT...I'm always going to be nervous about his chances of re-tearing that tendon sheath. Every time he swings from the left side of the plate he's at risk. If he re-tears, it will mean surgery.
Re: Lackey. What is his realistic timetable and will he see any lingering effects from his injury? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:47 PM)
Mark: Supposed to start throwing again today, biceps issue has subsided. Sounds like it was more of a scare than anything else. He'll increase his throwing gradually but it sounds like he could return within a couple weeks.
What's the status of Erick Aybar? When he is likely going to be back?
Stephania Bell (3:48 PM)
Jon: It's so soon after him being placed on the DL that at this point he's probably just resting the heel. They're hoping it won't extend beyond the minimum but until he's actually trying to run again, we won't know.
Shane (Buffalo, NY)
Hi, Stephania, what's your opinion on Danny Espinosa? Slow start plus this injury.. should I start looking elsewhere or ride it out?
Stephania Bell (3:50 PM)
Shane: Maybe the forced interruption is just what he needed. I wouldn't give up just yet. He could be back tomorrow (although might be Friday).
Updates on C.Ruiz and McCann and which would be the better C to have ROS?
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
EJ: Well, considering Ruiz is serving out a suspension, it's not as if he's coming off major surgery like McCann. So while he may be a little rusty due to lack of game play, there's less unpredictability. McCann has looked pretty good hitting the ball but how he responds to playing catcher (which he's doing soon) will determine when he returns and how much he plays. Since you no doubt have another catcher already, I probably keep McCann and wait for him to warm up.
Now that Aaron Hill is on the DL any updates on how severe his injury is how long he will be out and how this will affect him for the rest of the year?
Stephania Bell (3:55 PM)
Ryan: Well, the report from Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic explains why Hill had persistent swelling and pain. A broken left hand. Hard to say how long he'll be out since i have no details as to where the break is and the plan for treatment. But plan on 4-6 weeks. Bummer.
I know Greinke just got hurt but what is the expected time table? I saw on twitter (I think it was twitter) that you said the surgery he had speeds up how soon he can start throwing. How long is he gonna be out?
Stephania Bell (3:58 PM)
Dan: Yes. They ended up using a small plate to stabilize the fracture (instead of a rod as originally planned) and the hope is that he can begin throwing within 7-10 days of surgery. If he can resume throwing soon, he doesn't really have to go through a spring training like period to build up arm strength. Could potentially return in half the projected time.
Just got a steal of a trade for Yoenis Cespedes (or so I think right now), how long will he be out and how will his hand affect his swing when he returns? Should I still expect a top 40-50 hitter?
Stephania Bell (4:00 PM)
Jordan: Seems the A's are hopeful it will be the minimum time but it's a soft tissue injury, making the recovery unpredictable. If he's able to return to hitting in a week or so, then I wouldn't be too concerned about a big dropoff. All will depend on how much down time he has.
Scuba Steve (Cincy)
Last one! How long will torn lat muscle shelve Stephen Pryor?
Stephania Bell (4:03 PM)
Scuba Steve! Yes, whenever the team uses the word "tear" it makes it sound more serious. Getting technical, there is some tearing, even if it's microtearing, when there is a strain. But when we hear a report that says tear, it's as if the team is signaling a worse injury. In any event, sounds like one that will keep him down for at least a month. Probably another couple weeks beyond that.
Stephania Bell (4:04 PM)
Thanks so much to all for coming. Great qyestions, as usual. Will try to get to guys we didn't get to here on the 06010 podcast Thursday. Have a healthy week!
