Mel is here!
Mel , when its all said and done , which LT in this draft will have the best pro career?
Mel Kiper (12:59 PM)
That's a great question. I'd say all three, not to dodge the question, will have excellent careers. I think Joeckel is the safest. I think Fisher has a chance to be as good, will grade out as well, but Joeckel is coming out of the SEC. The best in 3-4 years could be Lane Johnson.
Will the Colts add pieces to there defensive 3-4 or will they draft to help andrew luck?
Mel Kiper (1:01 PM)
They have to set up the board and see who the best is at 24. It could be a CB. They don't have a second round pick. Then they could come back in the third and get a WR. Maybe Xaiver Rhodes in the first. In the third, a guy that's moved up, Charles Johnson, Grand Valley State. He's a very underrated WR who's on the radar right now.
What teams are the best fit for Ryan Nassib and Shamarko Thomas?
Mel Kiper (1:01 PM)
For Nassib, it would be Buffalo, with his old coach. For Thomas, San Francisco in the early second, Cincinnati, the Jets. Those would be great spots.
Who are top 5 players Patriots should take who will be available at 29?
Mel Kiper (1:02 PM)
They could go WR. They could go DB, safety or CB. Robert Woods at WR from USC. Tyron Mathieu in the second round, maybe.
Should the chiefs trade out of top pick and pick up a high second round pick?
Mel Kiper (1:04 PM)
If they can trade, but if they can't, they take Joeckel. He'd be a much better player than what they had there. A significant upgrade. They don't have a second round pick. From the third round on, they could build a solid foundation. They got help in the secondary. They've done some nice things prior to the draft. If they have a good draft, they could be a playoff caliber team.
Which direction do your beloved Ravens go in the draft?
Mel Kiper (1:05 PM)
LB. And safety. Those are the areas they have to address. Then LT on the OL. Those are the three biggest areas of concern. Slot WR is the next. Manti Te'o, Kevin Minter, Kenny Vaccaro, Cyprien, those are some guys in play at the end of the first.
Kurt (Wisconsin )
Eddie Lacy didn't do very well in his workout, do you still have him going in the first round to Green Bay?
Mel Kiper (1:05 PM)
Yeah. Just because you don't run a 4.4 doesn't mean you're not potentially a great back. He's still in play for Green Bay. Emmitt Smith ran a 4.6 40.
jim va.beach [via mobile]
Mel. Do you no if any teams are going to take a chance with marcus lattimore in the mid rounds or considering it?
Mel Kiper (1:07 PM)
He'll probably have to redshirt this year, take a year off to get back to full strength. I think 3-4 round. San Francisco could take him. Green Bay, Cincinnati, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Jets, Atlanta.
Is there any consideration coming from the Vikings camp in taking Da'Rick Rogers if he's available in the 4th or 5th?? Or do his off the field issues remove him from there board
Mel Kiper (1:08 PM)
That depends. I can't speak for every teams board. I just think that Rogers in the 4-5 round makes sense. He led the SEC in 2007 in receptions. This is a guy that had some monster games against good competition. He went to Tennessee Tech but he still led the team in receptions. He has a strong frame, very athletic.
Craig (Braintree, MA)
Which team in the NFC North needs to do the best in the draft? I think it's the Vikings. They have the weakest QB.
Mel Kiper (1:10 PM)
I would agree. I highlighted the Vikings this morning on SportsCenter. You have to keep up with Green Bay and Rodgers. Detroit with Stafford. Chicago and Cutler. The defense needs to be upgraded. You desperately need a WR. They have two first round picks. I have them looking at WR and MLB. They could look at Robert Woods, USC; Kevin Minter, MLB; Manti Te'o.
Mel Kiper (1:10 PM)
Te'o would make the most sense. He's an ideal player at that point. Patterson could be another option at WR.
Mel,Is DJ Hayden a reach for Miami at #12, I think he's the best CB in the draft
Mel Kiper (1:11 PM)
Yeah. That would be a major reach at that point. If you're interested in Hayden, you trade down. I have a second round grade on him. He's coming off a serious medical condition. He is very good versus the pass. He needs to tackle better, become a more complete CB. With his instincts in coverage, I think he could be a late first rounder before getting serious consideration.
Do you think three corners will go in round 1 and do you see the Bears possibly getting Trufant?
Mel Kiper (1:12 PM)
I could see that, yeah. For depth purposes they could use him. They could use a MLB like Te'o. Ogletree. CB would be a luxury pick. They also need a WR. And MLB is a huge need.
how true are the rumor that cleveland plans on taking Dee Milliner?
Mel Kiper (1:13 PM)
If he's there, that's a great pick. To have him and Joe Haden at CB in a division with three QBs that can throw the football. Their defense played very well at times last year. Their defense is their strength. Their offense struggled. They are a team that would love to have Milliner at 6.
Realistically speaking who has better chance to start falling on draft day especially if teams start reaching for OTs. Cooper or Warmack? And falling where?
Mel Kiper (1:14 PM)
I would say Warmack, but I don't think he'll drop. I think both go in the top 11. But if one fell further the other, then I'd put Cooper a little ahead of Warmack.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
Compare and contrast Ansah and Dion Jordan..Dion more polished, Ansah higher upside?
Mel Kiper (1:15 PM)
He has great upside because he's such a gifted athlete. He's a freakish talent. Very limited football background. Very few starts as a player. To be in the top 10 mix is amazing. Great upside, but some risk.
Mel, if the Raiders can't trade out o the #3 spot what are the chances they pop a tackle there?
Mel Kiper (1:16 PM)
They're one of the many teams that could go DT. They could look at Floyd, Star. They could go CB with Milliner. They don't have a second round pick.
What are the chances the Bucs get Revis?
Mel Kiper (1:18 PM)
It sounds like this is a trade that should happen. There are all of the right elements. There is an interested team. The Jets are gutting the team and rebuilding it from the ground floor up. I would say the Jets would be willing with the Bucs. It doesn't seem like there is much other interest, but Tampa seems to be offering a fair deal. If I'm the Jets, I make the deal in a minute. If I'm Tampa Bay, I'm more reluctant. He's coming off the injury, you have to pay him a lot of money and you don't know if he'll get back to his prior performance.
Clay (Dallas, TX)
Zac Dysert, QB Miami (Ohio). What round do you see him being drafted, and how does he compare with Landry Jones and/or Tyler Bray?
Mel Kiper (1:20 PM)
He's in the mix with those two with some teams. Dysert has tremendous physical ability. He has ideal measureables. He's 6-3, 232. He started a lot of games in the MAC. He completed 63 percent of his passes. His TD-INT ratio is OK. He can scramble when he has to. I want to see more, moving forward, consistency. If you can coach him up, you might have something with him. I could see Bray going in the 2-4 range. He has the best physical skill set of anyone in the draft.
Lonny (Blaine, Mn)
Can you see the Vikings getting both Te'o and Patterson?
Mel Kiper (1:21 PM)
That wouldn't be bad. Te'o would be a great pick. Patterson is a risk-reward player. He is a one-year guy. He's not polished. He has to refine his skills. But he has freakish talent.
Clay (Dallas, TX)
How good is the RB coaching at Utah State? Kerwynn Williams this year, Robert Turbin last year.
Mel Kiper (1:23 PM)
Not a lot of coaching with these players, running backs are very instinctive. Williams had a chance this year to be the primary back and he delivered. He caught passes out of the backfield. He did a great job with the kickoff return in his career, along with returning punts. He's 5-8, 195. He has speed. He can change direction. Very quick. He's a very nice back. I could see him being a really nice Day 3 pick for somebody.
Do the Titans still go for a guard with their first pick despite the signing of Levitre? Who else could they target?
Mel Kiper (1:24 PM)
Yeah, they need another guard. They could take Warmack or Coooper. They can come back in the second round and look WR. They could also look DE, like Mingo, if he's there. They need a pass rushing DE.
Kevin (Reno, NV)
Would the Raiders be able to get a solid, long term starter at corner if they don't draft Milliner in the first round?
Mel Kiper (1:25 PM)
Yeah, there is some depth at CB. Some third round and on CBs: Robert Alford, Southeastern Louisiana; Jordan Poyer, Oregon State; BW Webb, William and Mary; David Amerson, NC State; Logan Ryan, Rutgers; Dwayne Gratz, UConn; Johnny Adams, Michigan State.
Mel with Smith still unsigned do you think DJ Fluker will be there for the Bengals? If Smith signs where do they go ?
Mel Kiper (1:26 PM)
Possible, but also a chance he could be gone. I think Miami could take him at 12. I could see San Diego at 11, Dallas at 18, Giants at 19. There are several teams that could take him ahead of the Bengals at 21.
Nick (Buffalo, New York)
When will the Bills grab a WR to complement Stevie Johnson?
Mel Kiper (1:27 PM)
I'd say it depends on how the draft goes. If they end up with Nassib, then they'll probably have to wait until the third. DeAndre Hopkins, Markus Wheaton. In the third round is where they could get some nice options at WR.
What limitations does Arthur Brown have that he isn't considered amongst the top ILB?
Mel Kiper (1:29 PM)
I think he is in the elite group of ILBs. I have him going in the second round. He can play inside in the 3-4. I think he can play OLB. He's an underrated standout in college. He started out at Miami. He sat out a year after transferring to Kansas State. He was good in coverage. He had 100 tackles this past year, a couple of INTs. He's a tremendous character guy. He's a run, chase and hit guy. The key is figuring out his weight, what will he play at? But he's a second rounder.
How high to you project Kyle Long? Is he someone the Bears could target on the 3rd day of the draft?
Mel Kiper (1:30 PM)
I think he's more of a late first, early second round pick. He's too versatile. He could be a guard, LT or even RT in the NFL.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Has the combination of a poor 40 time and new drug concerns dropped Keenan Allen a round in the draft from where he would have been selected?
Mel Kiper (1:31 PM)
I thought he'd be a second round pick and I still think so. He was recruited by Alabama as a safety. He's a big WR. The problem with him is he doesn't have enough speed. He's at worst a third round pick.
Any chance the OT from FSU falls to the dolphins in the second round?
Mel Kiper (1:32 PM)
Menelek Watson, that's about a 20 percent chance. I have him going earlier. He's still in the late first, early second round discussion.
Mel, which players will be picked too soon?
Mel Kiper (1:33 PM)
Xavier Rhodes, CB, FSU; Margus Hunt, DE, SMU; EJ Manuel, QB, FSU; Aaron Dobson, WR, Marshall.
How big of a red flag is Christine Michael? I keep reading that he is as talented as any RB in the draft, but has bad character issues.
Mel Kiper (1:34 PM)
As a pure running back, he's outstanding. He's got everything you want. He's a strong kid, one of the strongest in the draft. He can use quickness or power. Tremendous athlete. What he's done is had some off the field issues. He's battled injuries. He also has to improve as a blocker and receiver. But you can make the case that he's the best pure runner in this draft.
Curt (Helena, MT)
Both Kenny Vaccaro and Tavon Austin could help the 49ers immensely on either side of the ball, which one makes more sense to trade up for?
Mel Kiper (1:36 PM)
They need Vaccaro. He's a safety. He'd be a great fit for that program. But Austin, with Boldin, Crabtree and then you hope Jenkins lives up to his potential. But the more pressing need is Vaccaro.
How do you think Tyler Wilson would fit in a West Coast Offense, like the Jets are implementing this season?
Mel Kiper (1:37 PM)
In the fourth round area. He has small hands. Didn't have the great year because of the circumstances. He lost his coach before the year. But Day 3 he'd be a nice pick for anybody looking for a developmental QB.
Could the Bills become a division contender with a good draft?
Mel Kiper (1:39 PM)
I wouldn't go that far. They can significantly improve. First, they have to figure out the QB position. Is Kevin Kolb the guy long term? They need to add a WR. After Stevie Johnson, they don't have much. They need a OG. They need help at LB, DE. Lots of areas of concern. To move from where they were to the playoffs ... I think they'll be the third best team in the division.
Brad (Katy, TX)
Any chance Terrance Williams of Baylor shoots into the mid second round?
Mel Kiper (1:40 PM)
I think he's more of a third round pick. The Senior Bowl week wasn't Williams at his best. He needs more of a burst out of his break. He's got the frame. But his separation is an issue. He made a lot of catches in the open field. I've seen him make catches when he's covered, though, boxing out. He didn't have a great combine. I see him more of a third round pick.
Is Denard Robinson a legitimate draft choice based on skill set (rather than athleticism), and where would he fit?
Mel Kiper (1:42 PM)
You're drafting him on his athletic ability, speed and toughness. Plus potential versatility. But that's all potential. He hasn't shown he can run routes and catch the ability. I think his most natural ability is running with the football. I think he's a change of pace RB, maybe a return man. He has great feet. Some people think he could play DB. But a change of pace, situational RB is where I think he could fit.
adam (Medford, OR)
Thoughts on Kenjon Barner in the NFL...and what round does he fit in.?
Mel Kiper (1:43 PM)
Barner, I thought back during the season he'd have a higher grade. I thought he'd run better. But he plays faster than he times. He's a good athlete. Good bounce to the outside. His big liability is as a blocker in pass situations. But as a runner he has game breaking ability. He figures into the 4-5 round.
Are there any starting TE's in the later rounds that the Browns could draft?
Mel Kiper (1:44 PM)
Mychal Rivera, Tennessee; Chris Gragg, Arkansas; Joseph Fauria, UCLA; Jake Stoneburner, Ohio State; Matt Furstenburg, Maryland.
Mel Kiper (1:44 PM)
Day 3 guys.
Does Jarvis Jones fall to Pittsburgh at 17? Would they take the risk on his upside?
Mel Kiper (1:45 PM)
I think it would be a great pick for the Steelers. He has tremendous character. The only thing that pushes him down to the Steelers is the 4.9 40. If he runs better than that, he's not there at 17. If he's there, he could help bring back that Steelers defense.
Pa. Raider (Pennsylvania)
Mel, thoughts on the Raiders picking 1 or 2 late round picks to fill a need, in your opinion who would they be? Keep up the good work!
Mel Kiper (1:46 PM)
They have a ton of needs. DT is the biggest need. CB is a huge need. DE. RT/LG. WR. They have a lot of third, fourth and fifth WRs, but not 1 and 2. They also have a TE issue. So TE at some point they have to address.
Adam (Medford, OR)
Does Atlanta stay at 30 or do you see another big splash out of TDIf they do make a splash, who is it they are after.?
Mel Kiper (1:48 PM)
They have to look at the heir apparent to Tony Gonzalez. Zach Ertz is a possibility. Kyle Long. They could look at CB DJ Hayden. CB is probably the most pressing, but they could look for some OL help, a TE, DE, RB at some point.
Mel, can Tavon Austin provide the Lions with a deep outside threat? Why can he only play in the slot?
Mel Kiper (1:48 PM)
I think he's a slot receiver only. A return man/slot receiver. No. 5 is too high to consider Austin. They could use a DE, OT. They don't have the luxury of taking him at 5.
stephen (New Orleans)
How do you feel about saints trading down in the first to acquire a second and drafting Eric Reid from Lsu in the first and possibly Jamie collins in the second?
Mel Kiper (1:50 PM)
Moving down to me is always a good option. But they could use Jarvis Jones or Kenny Vaccaro. So if one of those guys drop to them, they have to take him. They could look in the third to Gholston.
Denver...takes _____ 1st round
Mel Kiper (1:51 PM)
I think a DB. They could take ILB. Either one. Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU; DJ Hayden, CB, Houston; Cyprien, FIU. One of those guys.
if the jets make the revis trade with the bucs, who do they take at #13?
Mel Kiper (1:52 PM)
They could look at No. 9, Mingo. Then at 13 they could take a OG, S Kenny Vaccaro, QB Geno Smith, WR Tavon Austin, RB Eddie Lacy (which would be a reach, though Mike Greenberg would be happy, he's a big Lacy fan).
If the Pats wanted to take WRs in rounds 1 and 2, who could they look at in each? Maybe Keenan Allen/Hopkins in 1 and Da'Rick Rogers/Terrence Williams in 2?
Mel Kiper (1:53 PM)
Maybe a Robert Woods in the first and maybe a Ryan Swope in the second. Or Hopkins in the second.
Please explain how Fluker fits on Miami? He is a behemoth, how is he going to play a zone scheme? Thanks
Mel Kiper (1:54 PM)
He's the kind of guy who is very agile for a big man. He's got very little body fat for someone 340+ pounds. As a run blocker, he'd be phenomenal. He's very underrated in pass protection. And then Martin could play his natural spot of LT.
Joe (Las Vegas)
Any Chance Buffalo could end up with Matt Barkley?
Mel Kiper (1:55 PM)
No, I don't think so. His arm strength is not tremendous. He's a California kid going into Buffalo with the sleet and the snow. I don't think with his average arm strength that would be a good fit.
Who is the better route running receiver and who will go first DeAndre Hopkins or Robert Woods?
Mel Kiper (1:56 PM)
I think probably Woods slightly better than Hopkins. Woods is very polished. I like both of them. They're both very complete receivers. Woods has gained more momentum in the draft process. Markus Wheaton may be the best route runner. Very underrated.
Mel Kiper (1:56 PM)
We'll have our final pre draft chat on Wednesday. The last one before the 2013 NFL draft!
