Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:01 PM)
Thanks for stopping by to chat. This is one of the most exciting times of the offseason. You have to love the draft, although I prefer the two-day, Saturday-Sunday format. Enough of my babbling, let's start chatting ...
JH, love your work. Seems like every receiver short of Austin has been mentioned as playing like Boldin. With the Ravens at 32 (maybe 35...) if Keenan Allen, DeAndre Hopkins and Quinton Patton are there, who do the Ravens take if they are looking to replace him?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:03 PM)
Steve, I would take Hopkins. From the draft experts I talk with, I keep hearing the comparison with Anquan Boldin. So, who better to replace Boldin with, right?
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think that the Pittsburgh Steelers will Select in the 2013 NFL Draft with their first pick?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:04 PM)
Kiper seems sold on TE Tyler Eifert and McShay is sticking with LB Jarvis Jones. I would go with Jones. Yes, he's a risk. But there's a big reward if you hit with him.
Bengals have 10 picks and I feel this draft has most talent/value in 2nd rd. Should they try to trade out of the 1st and then move some of those extra picks so they have 4 2nd rd picks? Could get a safety, LB, OT, and RB
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:06 PM)
If safety Ken Vaccaro or offensive tackle D.J. Fluker is there in the first round when the Bengals draft, they should jump at the chance to get one of them. Not sure if there is a lot of teams looking to jump up at the Bengals' spot anyway.
Jared C. (Baltimore)
Other than Kenny Vacarro, are any safeties worth taking in the first round at #32?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:07 PM)
Matt Elam from Florida and John Cyprien from Fla. International.
Who do you feel would be the best talent available at 6? I don't believe you should draft on "need" that high in the draft, but on talent.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:08 PM)
I like Oregon LB Dion Jordan a lot. Not sure if there is much of a chance for him to fall to the Browns. But he would be a great 3-4 outside linebacker, which would also address a need for the Browns if Jabaal Sheard can't make the transition.
Jamison, I have read a lot of comments from Steelers fans that they should have let Sanders go, am I missing something? I feel he has the ability to turn into a legit NFL receiver. What do you see out of Sanders and do you think the Steelers will try to get him signed long-term early or wait out this year and see how he performs. Thanks.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:10 PM)
Despite what Sanders' agent says, I think there is a good chance that the Steelers can get an extension with Sanders. He's a good fit with Todd Haley's offense. Sanders doesn't have the straight-line speed of a Mike Wallace but he is quick. He also does more after the catch than Wallace.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
Is Ziggy Ansah too much of a boom/bust prospect for the Browns to take? Guy has unbelievable skills and potential...
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:12 PM)
Scott, I have to admit that Ansah does scare me as a prospect. He could be better than JPP but he has the potential to be a bust. Ansah was a starter for less than one full season and had 4.5 sacks. Still, I would be surprised if he gets out of the top six picks.
is TEO the next ray lewis FOR THE RAVENS?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:12 PM)
No one in this draft is the next Ray Lewis.
NO! Please not Jarvis Jones!
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:13 PM)
Sorry. He has the look of what the Steelers like in outside linebackers. If Jones doesn't have medical problems, he could be one of the bigger steals in this draft.
Diego Ortega (Cleveland)
If Browns trade down and Chance Warmack is there, do you think there is a chance they snag him?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:14 PM)
I'm not a fan of drafting a guard with the top 20 picks. Warmack is a big-time talent, but philosophically I can't justify it.
Jason (Santa Monica)
Welcome Back!! Please tell me the Steelers won't be drafting a TE in the 1st.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:15 PM)
Jason, they won't draft a tight end unless his name is Tyler Eifert. Does that help?
Mike (Raleigh, NC)
Great article on the Browns draft strategy earlier! Banner has a history of trading during drafts. Think he'll do it?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:16 PM)
Mike, you're right about Banner liking to trade down. I'm not always a fan of it. I believe teams should stay in the top 10 if they can get an impact, game-changing player. I don't see one at the Browns' spot, unless Dion Jordan falls to them. That's why I feel trading down is the best option.
Ryan (Salt Lake City) [via mobile]
Glad to have you back Jamison! I've been seeing John Cyprien going at 21 in some mocks. Do you have any extra insight who the Bengals might be rating as the best fit with Reggie Nelson?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:18 PM)
Ryan, I feel Vaccaro, Cyprien and Elam would all be good choices. Honestly, I would be happy for the Bengals to finally address the strong safety spot. It seems like this has been a major hole for a couple of years. It's time to move past Chris Crocker.
John Benz (North Cincy)
Hi J.H. With Andre Smith still unsigned and the Harrison deal quickly fading, do you see RT and OLB as the top two needs or would you still go safety in the first if Vaccaro is available?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:19 PM)
John, it would be hard for the Bengals to pass on Vaccaro. I like Kansas State Arthur Brown and he could be had in the second round when the Bengals have a couple of picks. As for right tackle, the Bengals would be content with promoting Anthony Collins to that starting spot.
Chip (Windsor, Ohio)
Why is Dion Jordan being rated so much higher than Jarvis Jones? When I watch highlights Jones flat out destroys quarterbacks with multiple moves. It seems like Jordan is limited to a speed rush with a few effort sacks. Is it coverage, size, speed, and "potential"? because film wise it doesn't seem Jordan stacks up.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:20 PM)
Jones had an awful pro day and he was once diagnosed with spinal stenosis, which could severely shorten his career. That's why Jones is rated lower.
Jeremy (The Burgh)
Jamison -Since you are not a Ravens homer as you have stated multiple times. Why did, on live air, state during a discussion of the Elvis Dumervil situation that, "He fell right into our laps...." I'm sure you won't respond to this, but it's worth a try.Thanks.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:22 PM)
I would like to know where I said that. If I said those words, it must have been preceded with the context of the Ravens talking. I covered the Ravens for 11 years and have never said "we" or "our" or "us" like some local media members have said before.
Michael (Arizona )
When will Manti Te'o be drafted? Mid 2nd?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:23 PM)
Vikings will take him in the first round. They have two picks in the first round. Their GM loves Notre Dame players.
Colin W (Baltimore)
Should the Ravens draft a LT early or give KO a real chance to be our LT?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:24 PM)
I would really like to see how KO plays there. But he has a lot of potential. I would prefer the Ravens try that instead of going back to Oher at left tackle.
Hey Jamison, do you think Andre Smith signs with a team before or after the draft?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:25 PM)
The last time I talked to Marvin Lewis, he believed Smith would be signed in "short order." I think it can get done before the draft. Smith knows his value drops further after the draft when teams address their needs.
is james harrison off the ravens radar?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:26 PM)
Yes, ever since Elvis Dumervil fell into our laps. I mean, the Ravens' laps. I got to stop doing that!
Safety seems like such a need for Pittsburgh, yet I rarely see it mentioned. Would Vacarro be a good fit?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:27 PM)
It's not out of the question. Clark is in the final year of his deal, and Polamalu hasn't been durable. But outside linebacker and wide receiver are more immediate needs.
Don't pay attention to the whiners saying you're a Ravens fan. Do you see AJ Green getting a Megatron-type contract in the near future?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:28 PM)
It will be interesting to see how much the Bengals are going to be willing to pay. Some team may make him the highest-paid WR if the Bengals don't.
If the Bengals are able to sign Andre before the draft. What would you think of the Bengals moving up and getting Tavon Austin who would fill a lot of needs for us? Then we could still potentially grab Rambo in the second or third?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:29 PM)
He would fit what the Bengals want. They are looking for a game-changer. That's why they talked with Reggie Bush in free agency. But the Bengals prefer to trade back instead of moving up. I don't see them moving up, even though it would be a bold move.
Do you see the Ravens resigning Bryant Mckinnie? If not do you see him getting signed at all?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:30 PM)
I get the feeling that if the Ravens don't sign him, the Chargers will. They like getting former Ravens tackles (i.e. Jared Gaither).
2nd Round RB with a bigger upside: Bernard (UNC) or Franklin (UCLA)?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:31 PM)
I like Bernard's playmaking ability. The Bengals may as well.
John (NichVegas, KY)
JH, what value does the 6th pick have in this draft. Can you get two #1's or realistically are they just getting a 2? Either way, I agree that the Browns need to get more pics.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:32 PM)
Last year, the Rams got a second-rounder for moving down from No. 6 to No. 14. The Browns should get one if they drop to No. 11 or No. 12 (Miami and San Diego).
JH, you said recently that the Browns shouldn't even consider signing Quentin Jammer. Why not? He's better then Sheldon Brown and Buster Skrine! Even if they draft a CB theres no guarantee that he will be able to come in and start.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:32 PM)
Have you seen Jammer play recently? I'm not talking about five years ago.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
With the hindsight of a season, Browns definitely made the right decision giving up a second for Gordon, right? He's better than some of the WRs mentioned at the end of the FIRST round...
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:33 PM)
I don't think there's a question that Gordon would be a first-round pick if he was in this year's draft. So, yes, it was a good move by Heckert. Too bad he's gone.
Hey Jamison, I know James Harrison was cut several times early in his career by the Steelers and Ravens because he couldn't seem to grasp their defenses. Do you think the lack of interest from NFL teams has to do with his football IQ?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:34 PM)
It's more about his age, injuries and declining production than anything else. Of course, I would never say that to his face.
Brian (Valley Forge, PA )
Jamison, just for fun, non-binding prediction time. The first big shock of the draft will be...
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:35 PM)
Eagles selecting Geno Smith.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:36 PM)
Appreciate all of the questions. It was a fun chat. Let's talk next Wednesday for one last pre-draft talk. Have a great rest of the week.
