KC Joyner (4:00 PM)
Good afternoon! Let's talk some football!
Michael (Waco, TX)
Does Baylor's Terrance Williams have the chance to be a first round pick? He led the nation in receiving, and is still way underrated. Why are teams not wanting to jump on his size and his experience and ability to make decisions on the spot? He has proven multiple times that he is a deep ball threat and can make you miss.
KC Joyner (4:01 PM)
Williams ranked first in a recent TFS ESPN Insider review of the top nine WRs in this year's draft (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2013/story/_/id/9175264/2013-nfl-draft-terrance-williams-draft-most-underrated-prospects) but his speed and age did not compare well to the others. That's what is likely keeping his stock down.
Leo (Flint, Mi)
With the wild roller coaster seasons of the lions, can you see any serious changes that has happened during the off season? And a follow up, What are they really going to be looking for in the upcoming draft?
KC Joyner (4:04 PM)
Hello to Flint! It's been a while. Kevin Seifert just had a great post about the Lions drafts and how this year may be the one where they have to draft for need. If that is combined with their offseason signings (and they added Bush and resigned Houston, both of which were good moves), Detroit could get back to WC contention.
a couple years ago you wrote an article on tharlod simon actually being better than claiborne do you still believe that and does that mean someone is gonna get a steal in the draft? Your Thoughts?
KC Joyner (4:04 PM)
Simon has taken a bit of a backwards step since then but not enough to put his draft stock as low as it is. Definitely think he could be a steal.
Erick (US Virgin Islands)
What do you think the Cowboys will end up doing at T? Sign Winston or another FA, or look for one in the draft? With the assumption Free takes a pay cut or is released on June 1.
KC Joyner (4:05 PM)
Would think they would want to sign a FA, as there are enough quality FA candidates at that position. Draft also has plenty of prospects but it also has other personnel solutions that can't be addressed as easily through FA.
Mike (New Jersey)
If you were a steelers fan and they select cordarrelle patterson would you be happy?
KC Joyner (4:06 PM)
Sure, as long as they get more use out of him than they did out of Mike Wallace. No use having a vertical threat if the team isn't going to throw vertical passes very often.
Shane (Robins Air Force Base, GA)
KCJ, if all three top-tiered tackles are gone by the time the Cardinals pick at 7, what would you think about the Cards grabbing Warmack and then trading their 2nd rounder to KC for Albert?
KC Joyner (4:08 PM)
Sounds like a winner. Getting two quality O linemen would go a long ways to solving what is arguably their biggest offensive issue (no QB could perform well behind last year's O line).
KC just want to get your thoughts on EJ Manuel if you were to combine last years draft with this years I'd rank Manuel #3 behind Luck and RG3 am I wrong?
KC Joyner (4:09 PM)
Truth be told, an argument could be made that Manuel is the best QB prospect in this year's draft. Not saying he is the best, but the argument in his favor is there to be made.
How exciting would a Cowboys Broncos Thanksgiving game be? Cant wait for the schedule release.
KC Joyner (4:10 PM)
Sounds like a great way to spend Turkey Day. Really looking forward to the schedule as well.
Enrique (Kansas City, MO)
I have been a Bills fan since 1991. Is there any reason for me to think that we will ever get back to the glory years of the 90's? To tell you the truth, it depresses me thinking about it.
KC Joyner (4:11 PM)
That's an awfully high bar. How about just getting Buffalo back to the point where it competes for playoff berths? They might not be that far away from that level (plenty of metric reasons to like this team's potential).
B Mand (Sarasota, FL)
Who is a guy who will probably be drafted in the mid to late rounds that could come in and make a major impact right away?
KC Joyner (4:12 PM)
Apt timing, as it looks like there will be a TFS article about good later rounds selections hitting ESPN.com some time next week.
your article on Devin Gardner and Michigan got me pumped up for the season! What type of pro prospect is DG? i think he's gonna open some eyes this year ...
KC Joyner (4:14 PM)
Go Blue! Gardner is 6-4, so he's got potential to build an NFL caliber frame. He's also really accurate and hits vertical passes. The big issue for him could be Michigan's wideouts, as he won't have the same caliber of pass catchers that some of the top NFL Draft QBs have been fortunate to have the last couple of years.
Zac (The Bay)
KC, what it do? Thoughts on DHB's role with the Colts and if he fits NCO (No Coast Offense) with the Andrew Luck Director of Offense running the show. Personally, I think it'll be nice to have 2 athletic receivers on the outside and TY in the slot....
KC Joyner (4:15 PM)
DHB started to showcase a better set of route running skills late in his Oakland tenure, so he could be one of the better FA signings. Just want to see if Indy goes vertical as often this year (they should but that's easier said than done).
Branden Albert supposedly on the market for a high second rounder. why wouldn't the Lions get involved here? the OL is in shambles, and i'd rather take an established vet than a rookie. would then allow the Lions to draft all D in the 5 spot ...
KC Joyner (4:16 PM)
Would agree with that thought in most years but this year's draft does have a lot of quality O line talent. Not sure they should give up a high draft pick for someone if they can draft a younger player who could be just as good.
Candy (Slippery Rock)
Hello KC, Dolphins are said to be negotiating with Albert. Wise move or should they try and get one of the talented LTs in the draft?
KC Joyner (4:17 PM)
Go for younger talent.
Bert (St. Paul, MN)
Do you know of any lingering concerns regarding Arian Foster's irregular heartbeat?
KC Joyner (4:18 PM)
Haven't heard of any but his 7.0 GBYPA last year is a bit of a concern (ranked 24th).
Peyton goes down for the year - Denver still make the Playoffs.?
KC Joyner (4:18 PM)
Osweiler is good but he isn't that good. Denver is lucky to get to 7-9 with him under center.
I really have a hard time seeing mingo and jordan ranked higher than jarvis jones for one their so called potential doesnt match with what they did on the field and all jones did was wreak havoc on the field. I just find it crazy that running around in shorts means that much when drafting. your thoughts?
KC Joyner (4:19 PM)
Agree, especially in the case of Mingo. Mingo could be great at times but Jones was great pretty much all of the time.
Adam (Medford, OR)
What's with all the buzz about Chip Kelly new offense...people are already talking about how it will change the NFL. What have you heard about it.?
KC Joyner (4:21 PM)
I've seen a lot of it from breaking down Oregon tapes the past few years. Thing to know about Kelly is he will adapt his offense to his talent. If he has a dominant WR, he'll concentrate more of the passing game there. If he has two strong RBs, he'll split the carries. He has an overriding philosophy of wear the other team out with speed but all in all will adjust his playcalls to his talent.
Which RB had the best GBYPA between Ellington/Franklin/Ball/Taylor?
KC Joyner (4:22 PM)
Still have to put Franklin through the full review. Look for something on draft RBs to hit after the draft.
Do you think there's any chance the Brown's could pull off a move like the Vikings did last year and convince Arizona to trade with them because other teams are interested in trading up to draft a LT and much do you think they could get from them?
KC Joyner (4:23 PM)
This draft will be a tough one from the perspective of getting other teams to want to trade up. That normally happens when one player is considered a lot more valuable than the next player at his position but the amount of relatively equal draft value among the top picks means that isn't the case this year.
What would it take for the Cowboys to finally make a run in the playoffs? Seems the defense is awfully close if healthy.
KC Joyner (4:24 PM)
I think their offense needs to assert itself more. They've got Romo operating a dink/dunk system and it's working to an extent but they would probably be better off letting him take more chances. Finding a good balance between those approaches might be just what this team needs to take that next step.
B Mand (Sarasota, FL)
Do you think any of the QBs in this draft are ready to start from Day 1?
KC Joyner (4:25 PM)
Depends on the team they end up with. Put Barkley or Smith with Jacksonville and there is case to be made they should be a Day 1 starter.
how do you determine fair maket value for mathew stafford as hesuggests. hes 25 and still has upside or is it just determined thats hes suber bowl capable qb and pay him according to that .
KC Joyner (4:26 PM)
Good question. Is fair market value what he's done statistically or is fair market value what he's done as far as getting his team into and through the playoffs?
Chip Kelly wants to run 84 plays a game. Is that even possible? The Pats ran 74 per game last year
KC Joyner (4:27 PM)
That level was possible in college because of the clock stoppages but it almost certainly isn't possible in the NFL.
Who would you compare jonathan Franklin to?
KC Joyner (4:28 PM)
Maybe Frank Gore. Would really like to see Franklin go to GB, as he looks to be a perfect fit for that offense.
If you were the Eagles would you draft the OT or the DT? Star or Fisher?
KC Joyner (4:29 PM)
Got to go O line. It's the classic Raider philosophy of build the offense around the line.
will the real Matt Stafford please stand up? do you think he can return to his '11 form?
KC Joyner (4:31 PM)
Too funny! He can return to his '11 form but Detroit would actually do better if they would stop asking him to throw 700 passes a year. Aim to keep him around 600 or so and the offense will be even more effective (and that will also help protect a defense that needs protecting).
Lions and Eagles questiions GALORE! What about my Redskins question?????
KC Joyner (4:32 PM)
Gut instinct says Hayden would be the best, but I haven't broken down tape on all of those prospects. Believe me, it's nothing personal against Washington.
Which college WR do you think receives to little attention in spite of having get metrics?
KC Joyner (4:33 PM)
Terrance Williams, for one. Stedman Bailey had numbers that was just as good or better than Austin's and yet he isn't getting nearly as much attention.
I know jobs are always at stake but would you trade your 1st rd pick this year to pickup a 1st rd pick next year with the hopes to package picks for jadeavan clowney?
KC Joyner (4:34 PM)
Clowney's good but he's not so good one should invest that kind of value in him.
Kris G (Indy)
The Vikes have 2 1st rounders and at least 3 positions (WR, MLB, DT) that are big enough needs to warrant a 1st round investment. Which two of those positions do you prioritize most for the Vikes and why? (I know that depending on who falls it all could change.)
KC Joyner (4:35 PM)
WR has to be top on the list, as the Vikings were maybe the worst team in the NFL in vertical/stretch vertical passes. DT would be next, as LB is the kind of position one can fill with a solid prospect and still get by.
Is Chance Warmack the only Bama OL you'd take in the first round? I think people are overrating Jones and Fluker.
KC Joyner (4:36 PM)
I had the entire Alabama O line listed on an overrated draft prospects list (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2013/story/_/id/9173191/2013-nfl-draft-geno-smith-draft-most-overrated-prospects). Their numbers were really good but not as great as is generally thought and that makes their prospects overrated.
Is Teddy Bridgewater better than any of the quarterback's in thsi year's class?
KC Joyner (4:38 PM)
Very good question. Wouldn't go so far as to say better but his presence would make the issue a toss up. If he has a great 2013 season, he'll be a very highly valued prospect.
Hi KC, I get the production vs potential argument with Jones and the other pass rushers, but no matter how productive Jones was that 40 time does raise some legitimate concerns. If you're a team like the Jets, how would you rank Ansah, Mingo, Jordan and Jones?
KC Joyner (4:39 PM)
The tape tends to override everything else, but Ansah's got some quality tape as well. Would probably rate him first, followed by Jones, Jordan and Mingo.
Bob Seger (Detroit)
N'damukong Suh is "like a rock" for the Lions in the middle, but given a hefty salary would the Lions be crazy to draft Star or Floyd and try to trade him for picks?
KC Joyner (4:40 PM)
Given the quality DL depth in this year's draft, trading Suh would be like trading low in fantasy football. Not a suggested move.
Terrell Suggs also had a terrible 40 yard time.
KC Joyner (4:40 PM)
Good point. It's still a valid concern but it might be case of someone who doesn't practice as well as he plays.
Shane (Robins Air Force Base, GA)
Is the NFC West slated to be 2013's toughest division? As in, other divisions will dread playing teams from the NFCW.
KC Joyner (4:42 PM)
It's got to be the hardest hitting division in the NFL. The Rams are building a beast, the Niners are defending NFC champs and Seattle might have the best defense in the NFL. If Arizona can step its game up (and that will likely happen), that will be the most brutal division in the NFL by far.
Adam (Medford, OR)
Atlanta moves up after Milliner, Xavier, Ziggy, OR Dion Jordan..?
KC Joyner (4:43 PM)
Not sure they want to move up in the draft. That worked for the Jones pick but Jones was somewhat unique in that his skill set fit perfectly with what Atlanta needed.
KC Joyner (4:44 PM)
Quick note - the ESPN Insider Draft guide series is a terrific read. Check these out, as they go into a good amount of depth about each team's current status, needs and who they are likely to draft. The index page is here: http://espn.go.com/nfl/draft2013/story/_/id/9131977/2013-nfl-draft-espn-insider-nfl-draft-guides-all-32-teams?addata=2009_insdr_mod_nfl_xxx_xxx
Leo (Flint, Mi)
Speaking of Clowney, if your an NFL team, should you be putting any interest in him now or wait till after the season?
KC Joyner (4:46 PM)
Got to wait. He could get hurt or could do like a lot of players and have a hit/miss campaign the year before he hits the draft. Bad news for him is that if he was in this year's draft, he'd be hands down the No. 1 overall pick.
KC Joyner (4:47 PM)
Going to hit the road just a few minutes early today to get a jump start on some tape breakdowns. Couple of quick notes before going. First, check out the new ESPN Insider Draft Tool - this is really cool - http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft/kipertool/. Also, the TFS material is always posted on Twitter @KCJoynerTFS. Thanks very much for all of the questions and hope to see you all here next week to talk some NFL Draft!
