Ashley Fox (2:59 PM)
Hi everybody. I'm going to start a minute or two early because I might have to bounce a minute or two early. Let's get going.
Rich (New Jersey)
Hi Ashley, Two quick questions: 1] Manning brothers meet in week two - will this be a possible Super Bowl preview & 2] Is the NFL planning in 2015 or 2016 adding two more teams to the playoffs bringing the total to 8?
Ashley Fox (3:02 PM)
Possible Super Bowl preview? Possible, sure. This will be the third meeting between Peyton and Eli. Peyton is 2-0 against his little brother. But if I'm looking at the NFC right now, I can think of a handful of teams I'd expect to see in the Super Bowl before the Giants. San Francisco (again). Seattle. Atlanta. Green Bay. As for expanding the postseason, I expect it will happen eventually, but I'm not sure on the time table. Teams really value the bye week that is the reward for begin the No. 1 and 2 seeds. They won't want to give that up. It is a huge advantage.
Mr Alan George (United Kingdom)
Hi Ashley... I wanted to ask you what you think the Eagles are going to look like this year and who you think that will pick at number four in the draft on Thursday?? Love your columns on ESPN!! Best wishes, AL
Ashley Fox (3:04 PM)
Well, the draft was last Thursday and they picked offensive lineman Lane Johnson, so there is that. As to what the Eagles are going to look like this season, that's a very good question. A lot of folks are wondering that, given that Chip Kelly hasn't been particularly forthcoming with his plans. I think their offense will undoubtedly be up tempo. Which quarterback is running it remains to be seen. The Eagles have revamped their secondary, but I'm not sure any of the players in place now are more than just guys. That's certainly an issue.
Kardfan (Illinois)
I think just having an established/proven Q.B. will GREATLY improve the morale and outlook of this team...would 8-8 be too much of a reach?
Ashley Fox (3:07 PM)
I assume you are talking about Arizona, Kardfan? Carson Palmer will help Arizona, there is no doubt. There has been such unrest at the quarterback position there recently, and he is the best option they've had since Kurt Warner. That said, he is what he is. Capable of running the offense. Isn't going to be super dynamic. He's playing for a head coach who knows a little something about running offenses, so that's good. I think 8-8 -- a three-game improvement over last season -- would be quite the accomplishment, given how tough the NFC West is going to be.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What did you think of the Jets Trading Derrelle Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for Draft Picks?
Ashley Fox (3:10 PM)
I know they felt like they had to do it, but it must've killed Rex Ryan to do so. You trade away your best player in a year when the head coach has to win. That's the beginning of the road to getting fired. The great unknown, of course, is when will Revis be ready to play and how effective will he be once he is back on the field? I think Adrian Peterson's remarkable return last year has put unrealistic expectations on what guys can do coming off ACL injuries. Peterson was the exception to the rule. For a cornerback, who has to back pedal and change direction quickly, it's going to be tough.
Andrew (MN)
Why doesnt anyone think the Vikings are good? I see rankings and people put the around 15. I just dont get it. They didnt lose any key players in the offseason. I dont see Harvin as a loss because he didnt play half the season when the Vikings won their last 4 to get in. They added Jennings and all the draft picks, Peterson will be 100% to start the season and so will Chris cooke. Alot of people also dont know that the Vikings had the hardest Strength of schedule out of any playoff team last season. It was the 4th hardest in the league. So even with Harvin being hurt, Cooke being hurt, AD starting slow and Ponder have a rough middle of the season they still made the playoffs with the hardest schedule of any other playoff team. So why dont people think they will be better this year?
Ashley Fox (3:13 PM)
The skepticism, for me, is about the quarterback. Can Ponder grow and progress and be able to handle more of the offense? It's great that they got Cordarrelle Patterson with the 29th pick -- and better still that the Vikings had three first-round picks -- but can Ponder get him the ball? They really won last year in spite of Ponder and because of Peterson. I'm not saying they can't do that again, but I'd like to see Ponder take the next step.
Ashley Fox (3:14 PM)
Hate to do this, but I've gotten a call from Mike Holmgren I have to take. My apologies.
