AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Good morning gang! We've got another 60 minutes of fantasy chattage ahead, so let's get this party started... Second cup of coffee in hand... Who is up first?
Gus (Santa Cruz)
AJ is Cashner worth streaming and or keeping in a 12 team keeper?
AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
Like most pitchers who start season in RP role and then move to SP, you have to give them time to stretch out. 65 pitches last start, maybe 80 max this one. Keep, but wait for the arm to build up strength.
Manager Johnson (Washington,DC.)
Mr.Mass: I'm saying Lombardozzi to get more PT! You a believer and if so who sits more often if this is true? You like Steve as a fill in add?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Espinosa is batting around .150. That's where any swapping should be done.
Who you takin'? Me or Morneau ROS?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
I think Morneau has the best chance at catching fire for a two-week stretch, but Duda over the course of the season is my pick.
Jedd Gyorko was dropped in my league - would you drop Hafner over him?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
Unless positional needs take center stage, Hafner will be far more valuable.
Think Valverde keeps his job AND remains effective? Or try to trade him?
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
Those two things kind of go hand in hand... he only keeps his job if he is effective, no? He's their guy. No trades.
Gerritt Cole (Pittsburgh)
When do think the Bucs will take a chance and call me up?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Long time out - they've got Liriano, Morton and even Karstens all making their way back from injuries...
What is the major difference with a win league and a quality start league. Seems like the studs are still the studs
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
They are. But now you get more value from a pitcher who leaves a game in the 7th with a 0-0 score.
Guy (Not USA)
CJ Wilson ? medicore starter or there's a chance for the old good days back ?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
Chance, certainly. It's hard to believe, though, that even against Seattle, I couldn't find a way to get him into my Top 5 for Friday.
Dropped JJ Hardy for Segura in a points league... Right move?
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
It is as of now, looking at a point per game difference there.
I take it by your rank of Jarrod Parker in the DN you aren't buying his last start?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
It's not just a matter of buying his last start or not... he's not as good as that one, nor as bad as the 10-1 loss that preceded it. It's always a combo of overall stats, run support, matchup, and then comparing to the rest of that day's field.
Brian (Ann Arbor)
John Buck, Evan Gattis, J.P. Arencibia. Which do you like most for the rest of the season?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Gattis just ahead of Buck, whose value maintains a bit more due to d'Arnaud injury.
Are you buying Y. Betancourt? He says he made changes in winter ball. Maybe this is his career year?
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
I'm not buying.
What's your take on Machado? It seems like people don't realize how good he's been so far.
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
He's been good, yes. But on a Kyle Seager level. He's not David Wright.
Are you buying Tepesch or Kendrick?
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
Much more favorable towards Nick than Kyle, but not buying him just yet.
Salvador Perez (KC)
this is my breakout season... right?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
I'm sorry... the answer is... No. No.
R. Weeks: Hang tight or jump ship?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
Alex Cobb or Josh Johnson for the ROS?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
Right now, it's hard to find fault in Cobb.
I need to trade peavy for a closer...who is he worth?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
1) You say you NEED to trade for a closer. If your trade partner knows that, you've already lost value. 2) Peavy, I have as a No. 3 SP right now. That's probably only going to net you an iffy "may lose the job, may not" kind of guy.
losing faith in Moustakas? killing me in an AVG/OBP league. can he turn it around, or should I stash Arenado?
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Sure, he can turn it around. But it is very hard to keep him in the lineup, and I've had him riding pine in a few leagues. Having a Plan B in place is not a bad idea.
Are you buying DeLaRosa's hot start? Would you start him at Arizona today?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
He's in my top 10 in DN, so clearly, I'm buying to a degree.
Any concerns on Jay Bruce lack of power? Josh Willinghams?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
More concerned with Bruce than Willingham - but I'm always going to be a guy who looks closer to BB/K rate as a red flag. However, I'm not in panic mode with either.
Karl Welzein (Grand Blanc, MI)
Who is the better Jason Heyward fill-in, Seth Smith or Lorenzo Cain?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
I'm a glutton for Smith, so he gets my pick.
Sell high on Coco Crisp? Crisp or Lorenzo Cain ROS?
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
I think Crisp > Cain rest of season, but his value will never be higher than it is right now. If you can get a top 25 hitter for him - or needed help in SP - you don't hesitate.
Brothers in Arms (Denver)
R.Brothers a decent RP add in NL only?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
He's OK, assuming Gaudin, Simon and Escalona are off the board.
Back to Cashner for a moment... in a league with an IP limit instead of a Starts limit, why not use him? Getting 5 good IP is always helpful right, especially with Cash's K potential?
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
Well, that's why you need to know your league's rules. Although, the chances of a W are lower when the SP may not pitch more than 5, if you're not worried about burning a start, there's no reason to sit Cashner here.
Are you buying Cingrani?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
I like what I've seen so far, but it is still "first time around the league." So, I'd keep him in there for now, but I'm not going out of my way to get him if he's on someone else's roster.
Brett Anderson. Hold or Dump?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
Always relative to what's available, but in that darn vacuum? Feel free to dump.
Better chance at getting Saves this year, Benoit or Axford?
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
Ax will have the job back, IMO, well before June 1.
I only have one closer and I am winnning my league by 30...go ahead punt saves and trade the closer?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
Not yet. The instinct is good, but you don't have a clear need just yet. Injuries will strike and at some point you'll have a hole to fill - at that point, you sell the saves to a team that needs it.
is Daniel Nava bonafide? Will he hit all season?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
I see him as legitimate top 75 hitter.
Joe (Bronx, NY)
Do you have a general strategy for players like G. Stanton, Matt Kemp or, to a lesser extent, E. Hosmer. Players who are underperforming (terribly) but who you can't drop and can't get anything close to proper value for in a trade? Ride it out? Make a trade for immense upside and see what happens? Cut your losses? Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
Timing is everything. You can't trade underachievers when they are at their lowest points, but once they have a few 3-for-4 games in a row, you will get much higher value. Of course, that's also when you have second thoughts on letting them go... but those calls are why we play the game!
Ted (Dark Vacuum)
Marte or carl crawford?
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Carl for me.
Streamers for FRI; Cashner or Kendrick?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
As I said before... Cashner the better pitcher, but if you have start limits, he might not be for you.
Help me understand the appeal of points leagues? Why should I do them over h2h category or roto?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
Every format has its own quirks - to me, it's all about personal preference. I don't enjoy H2H leagues as much as full-season roto, but some players like the "one number represents a players value" appeal of points leagues more.
You a believer in Drew Smyly? When will he get a rotation gig?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
Right now, I rank him as my No. 6 RP - and if Porcello has another poor outing or two, would not be surprised to see a flip of roles.
Alvarez or Middlebrooks?
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
I'm still Team Will.
I drafted Sal Perez but Pierzynski is on the waiver wire in my league. The TMR said Pierzynski should be owned in all leagues. Which catcher do you prefer ROS?
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Did you really just ask AJ if he likes AJ?
Thoughts on Didi Gregorius ROS? Worth an add in a deep mixed league?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
He's had a good week on the cover of "Small Sample Size" magazine, no? But, yeah, why not take a chance given how fickle SS has been this year overall.
J. Upton or Vott ROS
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
Leave off the last O for offense? I'll take Upton.
A. Pagan or S. Marte?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Helickson or Ian Kennedy?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Kevin (New Bedford)
Jose Altuve this good of a hitter?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Not .370 good, but yes, he's legit.
Rutledge or A Cabrera?
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
Hard to give up completely on Asdrubal right now, but the clock is ticking...
Shields or Verlander today?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
It's almost always Verlander if he's involved in the either or... today no exception.
Brandon Crawford or Simmons for SS?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
No interest in Andrleton in fantasy.
I have Seager, with Aramis on the DL, and Middlebrooks a FA...make sense to trade Aramis for an upgrade elsewhere, while starting Seager and/or Middlebrooks?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
Aramis probably comes back early next week... I'd probably want to have him in my own lineup when he does return.
Duda or Carter?
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
That's my time, gang. Always a fun and fast hour... I am on Twitter (@ajmass) in case I didn't get to your questions. Thanks to all who participated and we'll be back next week after our Fantasy Football Summit... Until then, as always, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor!
