Chat with Michael Collins

Welcome to Sportsnation! On Monday, ESPN.com golf writer Michael Collins brings his unique perspective as a former caddie into the chat.
Collins, who joined ESPN in August 2011, started his career as a stand up comedian and became a caddy by accident. He started looping for fun in 1999, but by 2003 decided to make it a full-time gig. He was the caddy for Chris Couch in 2003 when he won the Nationwide Tour championship.
Collins has never won an award for his writing, but he'll tell you that's probably because he failed high school English and still types with only his index fingers. But he's smart, funny and, most importantly, knows the game and what players and caddies go through on a weekly basis.
Send your questions now and join Collins Monday at 3 p.m. ET!

Michael Collins (3:00 PM)
It's the fastest hour in golf! And I need it cause I was in the middle of a 6 hour charity event in Jacksonville. Playing with my boy Bud Cauley who is going to catch a flight to Charlotte to play the Wells Fargo Championship this week. Gotta know from everyone... How do you feel about Greg Norman calling the PGA Tour's drug testing "shameful and a disgrace"?
Matthew (Pennsburg, PA)
Michael: How excited are you for the US Open? How much of an economic impact will it have for Philadelphia and surrounding areas?
Michael Collins (3:01 PM)
I can't wait to see how a golf course under 7000 yards holds up against the best. I just hope it doesn't rain. I want the course as firm and as fast as the USGA wants. The impact will be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
Mike (Charlotte, NC)
Won't be able to get out to the tourney this year until Friday and Saturday...what is the latest you've heard on the condition of the greens? Would hate to see such a great event hurt by some bad greens...
Michael Collins (3:04 PM)
Agree totally. Such a great layout and bad greens just ruins the experience. But haven't heard anything positive about at least 4 of them and heard as many as 6 had some serious issues but nothing so far this week.
No Name (Please)
You didn't tweet the names of your new Jaguars friends! Also, how about adding cheerleaders to golf?
Michael Collins (3:05 PM)
Names would only hurt the innocent! HAHAHA And there have been a few tourneys in football towns that have had cheerleaders come out to the events. Doesn't hurt, I'll say that much.
Tom (Verona, WI)
Mother's Day is May 12. How will you handle that while you're at the Players Championship?
Michael Collins (3:07 PM)
Mom always gets a package in the mail and a phone call from her only child. Yes, I'm a proud Momma's Boy, but was not spoiled by her. Strongest woman I have ever known.
Tom (Verona, WI)
When is the right time to start getting excited about the President's Cup?
Michael Collins (3:08 PM)
Right before the FedEx Playoffs.
Brian C. (East Lansing, MI)
Why do you figure Tiger is skipping Wells Fargo this week?
Michael Collins (3:10 PM)
Because of the 11 total missed cuts in his career, two have been at the Wells Fargo Champ. That's part of why I did the video saying if golfers a re really trying to get better all the time, conquer somewhere you struggle.
Jeff (Chicago)
Greg Norman is passionate about golf, which is awesome. But don't you think he goes overboard once in awhile? "Tiger being intimidated by Rory" and "steroids in golf" are probably the best examples
Michael Collins (3:11 PM)
Tiger intimidated by Rory, yes. The steroids comment, no.
Jeff (Chicago)
What do you think, MC? Will we see Horschel on the President's Cup team?
Michael Collins (3:11 PM)
I hope so, he's got the fight I'd want on the team
Cory (Geneva, IL)
I know they are different tours, but I liked the team even on the Champions Tour this week. Will we ever see anything like that on the PGA tour? Maybe pair 1 with 128, 2 with 127 etc. and have them play a 4 round best ball, or even mix in a scramble. I think it would be fun to watch.
Michael Collins (3:12 PM)
Would be an absolute blast to see, but it'll never be an official event.
JP (New Jersey)
Made for TV event. 8 people chosen at random. 16 PGA (or PGA and LPGA) players in the event. The 8 people draft two player teams and play 18 holes with them in a scramble format. Prize money distributed among the pros and amateur with some $$$ going to charity. Good idea for the off season?
Michael Collins (3:13 PM)
Wendy's Three Tour Challenge does something similar.
Batman (Returns)
Have Christian Bale and Billy Horschel ever been spotted in the same place at the same time?
Michael Collins (3:14 PM)
HHHMMMMMM!!!! ;)
Paul (U of Portland)
MC, what a reaction from Billy Ho after the winning putt on 18. That was really cool to see someone show just how much that win means. What do you see as Billy's ceiling out here on tour? Can he make this years presidents cup or next years ryder cup?
Michael Collins (3:15 PM)
He's playing as hot right now as Brandt Snedeker was in the beginning of the season. And he's being smart taking this week off to get rest. His ceiling is REALLY high. I see him winning again this year and making the Presidents Cup team
Austin (Pittsburgh)
How awesome was Billy Horschel's celebration after the winning putt on 18? That was clearly a man who had a lot of emotions bottled up and that putt just popped the cork out of the bottle.
Patrick (Hoboken, NJ)
Michael:In lieu of Norman's comments earlier today, kudos should be given to Vijay Singh for being forthright about his use of deer antler spray. Hopefully Singh's bravery inspires other potential violators to step up and come forward. Enjoy your week at Quail Hollow!
Michael Collins (3:17 PM)
I'm not at Quail this week, Bob Harig is. But if you were using something undetectable by the tour's testing program before, would you stop now because Vijay came forward?
Shosheak (the couch)
The PGA Tour's testing program is a joke -- because they don't do any off site testing. As to the blood testing thing, their's a reason no major sports leagues do it yet, it's more complicated and less effective than it sounds. And even if the tour had blood testing, it still wouldn't have caught Vijay, because you can't even get IGF-1 from a spray. So his comment is correct, but his reasoning stinks :P
Austin (Pittsburgh)
How big of an advantage are caddies? I've never had one personally, but people I know seem to have the rounds of their lives on difficult courses simply because of their caddy's knowledge of the course.
Michael Collins (3:19 PM)
Imagine having someone to lean on for advice an wisdom in every tough situation on the golf course. That's what a really good caddy does... gives you confidence and doesn't allow you to make really bad mistakes. Yes if you get a good caddy, they'll turn a 71 into a 68.
gray keller (manhattan)
Why does Ping not celebrate their victories like the other two big name golf club sponsors? Horschel won for them and it would be great to see that more than just on Ping's website
Michael Collins (3:21 PM)
One of my first videos was at the "Vault" where Ping has all their winners' putters in gold. And the bonus check is enough. Ping keeps a low profile with everything they do and that's just how they like it.
Austin (Pittsburgh)
Did those Jaguars cheerleaders walk with your group? My friend and I have a theory that hot women would make good caddies because they could easily distract your opponent.
Michael Collins (3:22 PM)
No, they didn't. Wouldn't you be distracted as well as your opponent? Just saying it may backfire.
Bobby Carlson (Woodstock, IL)
What do you think of Matt Hall...Stewart Cink's caddie??
Michael Collins (3:23 PM)
Great guy and very good caddie. Was working for D.A. Points when he won Pebble Beach. He and I used to room together when I was caddying full time, we met on the Web.com tour YEARS ago.
Michael B. (Clemson, SC)
Kyle Stanley finally gets back into contention after not really sniffing the Top-10 since his win in Scottsdale last year. What was his deal during that 'slump'? Seemed like a new star was born after he overcame that loss at Torrey
Michael Collins (3:24 PM)
Equipment change... Titleist to Nike... clubs and ball
stuart (oklahoma)
4 of the last 6 majors won anchoring....the %'s are getting to refute. which will come first, the ban on anchoring or blood testing for phd & which is more damaging to the game?
Michael Collins (3:26 PM)
to ban anchoring at the elite level seems ridiculous to me if we wanna grow the game as much as possible, making sure no one is taking substances like the PGA Tour was the Tour De France seems like a much more worthy cause.
Shosheak (the couch)
Not to bust anyone's Billy Horschel team bubble, but he's still only 13th in the standings. The fact that he's got a better shot at getting into the remaining majors will help, but he has to continue to play at this level, and as we saw with Rickie and Hunter last year, that's hard.
Paul (U of Portland)
Agreed, he is really strong in all areas and doesn't have any glaring weaknesses. 3rd in birdie average and top 10 in scoring avg and all around ranking.
Keith H (Seattle)
Greg Norman is a Master of the Sound Bite. That said, he has a point. Since there isn't a Players Union to protest like the team sports, blood test and be done with the questions.
Jay (IN)
Ryan Moore had 3 good days at the Masters, and one, well, not so good one. He played well at Quail Hollow last year. Solid sleeper pick for this weekend?
Michael Collins (3:29 PM)
I'd say yes. And it's a course that should "fit his eye". Similar shotmaking as Greensboro.
Aaron (Wisco)
Any whisper of PEDs in golf? With these guys taking the Tiger fitness approach, i would think some type of steroid or performance enhancing drug (not names antler spray) would be the next step to gain an advantage?
Michael Collins (3:31 PM)
Whispers, yes. But NO ONE will come out and accuse anyone, that'd be a career killer.
Shosheak (the couch)
Stanley faded once the calendar turned to March last year. Didn't change equipment till December. Lots of guys looks good when they're on, but then disappear.
Michael Collins (3:32 PM)
He said it was mostly mental.
Tom (Chicago)
How can the 2nd biggest market in the US with so many great golf courses no longer have a PGA tournament every year?
Michael Collins (3:32 PM)
I do miss Cog Hill.
Jeff (Chicago)
Any early predictions for TPC? Can Adam Scott keep it going?
Michael Collins (3:34 PM)
Good question. I do think Adam Scott will play well but it's really tough the first week out after winning your first major because everyone and their cousin is trying to get a piece of you
Shosheak (the couch)
Word on the street is TW was planning to play Charlotte before the Masters, so while I'm sure the 2 MC's didn't help, don't think it was the only reason either.
Michael Collins (3:35 PM)
His camp says he always takes three weeks off after the Masters. Hear me cough into my hand? What did he say?
Brett (ATL)
Trying to figure out which measurement doesn't have LA as the 2nd largest market.
Chris (Chicago)
MC - It sounds like you are diminishing Tiger's wins this year because they are ballparks he has success at?
Michael Collins (3:38 PM)
I don't ever diminish or discount wins because they are SO hard to get. What I'm saying is if you wanna get better, than wouldn't the challenge not only be with your swing but with the courses you play? Great you got the course record at your home course but if you suck at my course... doesn't make my course bad just means you're only good at your course. It's a danger.
Jeff (Chicago)
Did Tiger cut Quail Hollow because of the greens?
Michael Collins (3:40 PM)
That may be a reason. But I don't think he made a scouting trip to Charlotte
Paul (U of Portland)
In terms of using the cheerleaders as caddies, not a good idea! I've had awful and at times embarrassing results when trying to impress certain females around me while playing.
Austin (Pittsburgh)
The hot caddies idea might backfire I admit. But I don't think I'd mind too much.
Tim (Massachusetts)
In your opinion who will win a major first, Tiger Rory or Phil??
Michael Collins (3:40 PM)
Tiger wins the US Open this year.
Milan (Denver)
MC, what do you make of Greg Norman's comments about drug testing? Is it really an issue on the tour?
Michael Collins (3:42 PM)
I feel the same way about them that I felt about Jose Canseco when he first accused guys of steroids in baseball. I really hope not and don't wanna believe it but in today's society if the tour REALLY wanted to know, they'd blood test.
Jeff (Chicago)
Maybe Tiger needed a week to recover after MJ's wedding?
Michael Collins (3:43 PM)
Betcha the reception was off the HOOK!!
Aaron (Wisco)
who plays better this week Phil or Rory?
Michael Collins (3:43 PM)
Rory
Shosheak (the couch)
To be fair to Tiger, he's (theoretically) playing the players, don't think he likes that course much either :). And while he has a ton of wins at Torrey and BH, the number of wins he's had at Doral is merely in line with his career wins rate, and he hadn't won there in a while.
Paul (U of Portland)
Michael as a huge golf fan living in the pacific northwest, it pains me that we don't have any PGA tour events. Although I am amped for the US Open coming to Seattle/Tacoma in 2015, it would be great to have an event here every year! I still haven't been to PGA tour event or seen Tiger play in person!
Michael Collins (3:45 PM)
I know it's no consolation but the Canadian Open does come west every other year. And the course they play in Vancouver is AMAZING!
Gus (Boston)
When a golfer plays a round at home, do they usually walk the course or take a cart? Also, do they switch to a smaller stand bag or do they still use their big tournament bags?
Michael Collins (3:46 PM)
most use a cart and just keep clubs in their tour bags.
Brad (Greensboro)
Are there any true "rabbits" out there anymore? Guys that do it every week at different tournaments? Felt bad watching that kid this weekend come close but not make it.
Michael Collins (3:48 PM)
Kevin Looper. REALLY wanted him to hole out on 18th. I'm hoping he'll get a couple sponsor invites to some tournaments. You may see more rabbits this year and in years to come because q school only gets you Web.com Tour
Shosheak (the couch)
Michael you know I respect you, but please do some research on blood testing before you claim that the tour should be doing it, or that it will catch much of anything.
Michael Collins (3:52 PM)
We both know perception is reality. How do baseball players and football players get caught using PED's? And like I said in my video, the players who get caught using drugs like marijuana are never made public so what's the point, might as well do blood so at least you have the perception of truly doing something.
Tom (Verona, WI)
In Dallas on June 3 Guan Tianlang will play a 36-hole sectional qualifier for the US Open. He's had the Masters experience so this seems like a long trip for a slim chance.
Michael Collins (3:54 PM)
The kid finds a way. Say what you want about him, but he finds a way. And in 8 rounds of top level golf he had ONE hole higher than bogey. I won't bet against him ever again.
Jeff (Chicago)
Is there reason to believe that guys on Tour are using PEDs?
Michael Collins (3:55 PM)
Not really.
Paul (U of Portland)
If you were going to pick one player to be your coach who would you pick? Stricker would be great for putting, but maybe not as good for your swing? Phil would be cool because he has a lot of knowledge and so much enthusiasm. I would choose TW just because he's my favorite and would be so cool to pick his brain.
Michael Collins (3:56 PM)
Man that's a tough one...
Michael Collins (3:58 PM)
I'd have to say Stricker because he's not that long off the tee but pretty straight and I love the rhythm of his swing.
Milan (Denver)
@ Paul, pick Adam Scott and copy his exact swing.
Michael Collins (3:58 PM)
Maybe I should pick Colt Knost cause I'm built like him?!
Milan (Denver)
Do the players share plane rides to various tournaments? And does NetJets give them free rides?
Michael Collins (3:59 PM)
Share yes, free no, but they have some credits if they're sponsored.
Michael Collins (4:00 PM)
Told ya it would go fast!! Friday... Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel!!Back out to the course for me!@ESPNCaddie on twitter or email me ESPNCaddie@gmail.comPlay well y'all!MC
