Chat with Carl Edwards

Edwards won the 2007 Busch Series championship.
Welcome to SportsNation! On Tuesday, driver of NASCAR's No. 99 Ford for Roush Fenway Racing, Carl Edwards, stops by to chat about the Sprint Cup season.
Edwards, who currently sits second in the points standings, owns one win this season -- at Phoenix on March 3 -- and five top-10s in nine races. The Missouri native has finished the season second twice, losing to Jimmie Johnson (2008) and Tony Stewart (2011).
Send your questions now and join Edwards Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET!

How conifident are you going to talladega and do you think you will have a good finish
Carl Edwards (3:59 PM)
We're going to win it. 100 percent!...Obviously you never know at Talladega. You never know how it will end up.
Dave (WI)
Any aero or mechanical changes made to the car since Daytona?
Carl Edwards (4:00 PM)
Good question....They are very similar. Slight changes, but nothing huge. The big difference is the track is wider and has more grip than Talladega.
Keith Ayers (Addison, New York)
With the success you have had so far this season....can u and you're crew carry that over into the chase and translate that into a championship come November?
Carl Edwards (4:00 PM)
We can get to know one another better. Communicate better. Hopefully stay high enought in the points to experiment with some set ups and not worry about falling out of the Chase.
Brad (Crossville, TN)
Did Lee Westwood give you any tips you can share on your golf game at ZMax Dragway?
Carl Edwards (4:01 PM)
Yeah. He told me where to stand behind the ball. He told me how to hold my head. Not bend my knees when I'm swinging the club. A lot of things that seem very easy, but prove to be difficult to me.
brent elliott, missouri [via mobile]
So far you are surpassing last year's rocky season. What do you believe is your reason for success this year?
Carl Edwards (4:02 PM)
Jimmy Fennig and out pit crew. They're an amazing group. Also, Fords work with the Gen 6 car. We came out of the box pretty stout with this new car.
Joe (Troy, NY)
The Ford ads you did with the engineers was hysterical. Did those guys really not know who you were?
Carl Edwards (4:02 PM)
Yes. That was real. Some of them had no clue..no clue who I was. None of that was scripted. That made it really fun.
Lew Dawson (Arlington, TX)
During the racing season, how often are you at the team HQ in Charlotte? And, is this important to good communications within the team?
Carl Edwards (4:04 PM)
I go to the shop as often as I can. But really, it's when Jimmy says be there that I'm there. A couple of times he's already said I need you here tomorrow or the guys want to talk to you about this or that. Whatever he says, I do.
James (Rochester, NY)
What was it like doing Commentary for ESPN?
Carl Edwards (4:05 PM)
Stressful. But then by the end of it, it's really just a lot of fun. Alan Bestwick and Andy Petree and everyone at ESPN make it a lot of fun and easy.
Justin Hodges (Lonoke, AR)
Do you guys plan to practice much at Talladega with the Gen 6 car, after your rough time with the car at Daytona?
Carl Edwards (4:05 PM)
Very good question. I don't know if we'll practice much, since I wrecked five cars in Daytona. We may practice very little if the car is fast.
Joe (Troy, NY)
Did you choose 99 as a number? If you couldn't have 99, what would you have chosen?
Carl Edwards (4:07 PM)
The number belongs to the team. So, Jack Roush put me into the 99 car. If I had a choice of numbers, I would probably choose the No. 7, because that was my father's number when he raced. I grew up thinking that was the fastest number.
Jayne (North Dakota)
The only flip I want to see you do at Talledega is the backflip. You are a humorous guy. Were you funny in school? Were you the class clown?
Carl Edwards (4:08 PM)
I always got the talks too much box checked. Disrupts the classroom, that was another one. I like sharing ideas. I like learning things. I like talking to people.
Keith Ayers (Addison, New York)
How do u plan to stay out of the pack and avid the "BIG ONE"?
Carl Edwards (4:08 PM)
I don't plan on staying out of the pack. We have a very good spot on the points. I plan on qualifying well and staying up front. That's our plan.
Mayra (Chicago)
Do you follow other sports like the NBA or NHL? Go Blackhawks!
Carl Edwards (4:10 PM)
No, I don't have enough time. I meet people from all over the sports world. I'm a Tigers fan, because I know Gary. I'm a golf fan now, because I know Lee Westwood. I'm a Bills fan because of Randy Fuller and Jim Kelly. There will be a point in my life when I'm a huge sports fan, but I don't have the time in my life right now to be a good fan of anyone.
James (Rochester, NY)
What are one of the challenges of driving the new Generation 6 race cars?
Carol Hallett (Omaha, Nebraska)
Since you are not driving any Nationwide races..do you think being a commentator during these races are helping you???
Carl Edwards (4:12 PM)
I think it helped me the other night at Richmond. I saw some things that helped me determine how I would approach the race on Saturday night. I think it did help me.
Keith Ayers (Addison, New York)
How do u like racing at Watkins Glen and do u like coming to New York
Carl Edwards (4:13 PM)
Watkins Glen is a blast. It's one of my favorite tracks. It's a beautiful area. I love upstate New York. I drove over Niagara Falls. It was amazing. They really know racing in that area.
bianca (Suffern NY)
Carl. What have your fans meant to you throughout your career, what is the craziest thing you have signed?
Carl Edwards (4:14 PM)
The coolest thing about my fans is that they stick with me through thick and thin. Last year was tough. And to still have the support of my fans and see how excited they were after our win this year was really cool It's pretty humbling. They motivate me. To run into folks and say that you're awesome. I never really understood how passionate they were, but now I know and respect it.
Carl Edwards (4:15 PM)
The car is so fast that there is not a lot of room for error. It's hard to drive the perfect race and not make a mistake because the grip level is so high. That's one of the hardest things.
Hector Camacho (Bayamon, PR)
Any classic cars in the garage?
Carl Edwards (4:16 PM)
I've got a 2008 Mustang GT 500 KR which is kind of an instant classic. It has 540 HP. It shouldn't be legal. There are finger nail marks on the passenger side dashboard.
Matthew Snyder (Jackson, MI)
Do you have any dirt racing plans this summer?
Carl Edwards (4:18 PM)
Hmmm. I do not have any dirt racing plans. I'm trying to win the Sprint Cup championship. Once that's one, I'd run a lot of races. Scrambles. Rally races. I'd probably take a lot more risks after the championship.
Carl Edwards (4:19 PM)
I've met a lot of really nice fans at the track this year. I hope you're enjoying the racing. I think it will be a really exciting season. I hope to meet more of you. Drive safely.
