Rich Cimini (2:11 PM)
Sorry about the delay, folks. A technical snafu. I'm here and, as Marty Mornhinweg would say, ready to rock n roll.
IRA (Staten Island)
Rich, Your debate about when and if the Jets should cut Sanchez before summer camp I look at it the way you do but I also feel he brings along too much baggage plus how is Geno going to get any valuable reps behind Garrard and Sanchez. Yes it is an insurance policy but if Geno shows he can handle mini-camp then I think I would turn the page and cut Sanchez then. Thoughts?
Rich Cimini (2:12 PM)
I can't see them cutting Sanchez after minicamp. If nothing else, he's an insurance policy. You can't go into the preseason with Geno, Garrard and McElroy.
Angelo (Philadelphia, PA)
Great work as always Rich. What's your take on this Geno criticism? I'm a little skeptical of this Yahoo report about his "bad attitude." Seems eerily similar to what Cam Newton had to deal with as he entered the NFL. Thoughts?
Rich Cimini (2:14 PM)
The Yahoo report is accurate. Look, he obviously has some maturity issues. Is that a big deal? Not if he lets it. He has to come in, win over his teammates and perform. It's a performance business. Maybe this will set him straight and be a turning point for him.
The Unit (Southold )
I love Rex, but I wonder if he's being set up to fail, or if Idzik is willing to be patient considering the roster turnover and lack of talent. Now that he's been on the job for a few months, do we have any indication what standard Idzik is holding Rex to in order for him to get an extension?
Rich Cimini (2:15 PM)
Obviously, they're not going to attack a win total to it. Believe me, by the end of the year, we'll know Ryan's future.
Geoff (Hoboken, NJ)
a 5 headed qb battle? How do you think the qb depth chart will look week 1? What about week 17?
Rich Cimini (2:16 PM)
They'll probably go into the season with 3 QBs. Many teams carry only two. It's a tough call. The only player guaranteed a spot is Smith.
Sal (San Diego)
Hi Rich...I know Im going to get killed for saying this but there are somethings about Geno Smith that really remind me of Dan Marino coming out of college...big armed, emotional player with the great Junior year and subpar Senior year...however, being in this business as long as you have I think you can smell a disaster a mile away....in your heart of hearts do you think Geno Smith eventual implodes or becomes a star with the Jets?
Rich Cimini (2:19 PM)
Wow, that's a tough one, Sal. Chances are, it'll be somewhere in between. He has the physical talent, but playing QB in the NFL (especially in NY) is SO much more than talent. The perfect NY quarterback -- Chad Pennington smarts and work ethic, Vinny Testaverde arm, Boomer Esiason media savvy ... If Geno can put all that together, he'll be fine.
Jack (Denton, TX)
Hi Rich, A lot of fans seem excited about the Jets draft, but I'm not so sure. The Jets traded Revis and replaced him with a rookie who's already had 5 surgeries. Then they draft a 4-3 lineman when they play a 3-4 and on top of that DL is probably the strongest area on the Jets already. Then they draft a QB who can't take criticism for a market where scrutiny will be immense. If the scrutiny got to Sanchez, who seems very laid back, what's it going to do to this guy. I thought the Jets should have traded back for more picks to try to fill the holes and picked up the TE from Notre Dame along the way. Am I overreacting?
Rich Cimini (2:21 PM)
All fair points, Jack. I think Milliner will be fine. Richardson will be a Day 1 starter and he has a lot of talent. There could be a scheme adjustment and, you're right, the 3-4, 2-gap system negates some of his strengths. Geno is the big mystery.
Nils Highlander (Manhattan,KS)
What did you think when the Jets Took QB Geno Smith in the 2nd Round?
Rich Cimini (2:22 PM)
Wasn't surprised. We expected it. That was the buzz all day. In fact, I already had my story written. I thought it was a decent pick. They hedged their bet by picking him in the second. Different story if they had drafted him in the first or traded up in the second.
Binky Holborn (Bismark,ND)
How do you feel about the Ivory/Goodson 1-2 punch at RB? Thats gotta be more dynamic than greene/powell/mcknight, right?
Rich Cimini (2:23 PM)
They could complement each other well. Ivory is big, strong, physical. Goodson is a speed guy. They've played well in spurts. Question is, can they do it over the long haul?
Billy (Eastchester, NY)
Rich, in light of the Geno pick, can you envision a scenario where the Jets use their 2014 first rounder on a QB?
Rich Cimini (2:24 PM)
Absolutely. Picking Smith in the second round won't preclude them from taking a QB in the first round, especially if they're picking high. THat's why they have to find out about Smith before the year is over.
Gideon Armstrong (St.George,UT)
Rich, the Jets 3 biggest needs were OLB, S, and TE, and yet they came away with no one at any of those spots. Milliner, okay maybe, but how can they justify a round 1 DL for the 3rd straight yr, esp one who doesn't fit the 3-4?
Rich Cimini (2:26 PM)
OLB isn't as big a need with Coples moving there. YOu're right,S is a massive need. So is TE. Richardson may have been a luxury pick, but I can tell you a lot of teams had him rated highly.
Vincent (hackensack Nj)
Rich, Why do writers waste their time with non-issues? When reading about the Jets, the article is NEVER about football. Can you and the other writers who cover sports start writing about sports for once? Thanks!
Rich Cimini (2:27 PM)
Give me a specific example and I'll respond.
Rich, great job as always. Some members of the media are bashing Geno for his alleged behavior during the pre-draft visits. Honestly, this all seems contrived by either the media or perhaps even another team looking to perpetuate the "Circus" story. Nobody knows what really happened. Just because some anonymous source says this or that doesn't mean any of it is true. The whole circus atmosphere story is now a little tired. Can the media let go of this nonsense at this point? It's getting pretty old. And can the media let the kid throw an NFL pass before they start bashing him?
Rich Cimini (2:28 PM)
The stories haven't been inaccurate or exaggerated. The man fired his agents; the media didn't fire them. He has to realize his every move will be dissected.
Karan (Syosset, NY)
Are the Jets planning to add another TE and S?
Rich Cimini (2:33 PM)
I'd be surprised if they don't
Why in the world didn't the jets resign dustin keller? Thanks
Rich Cimini (2:33 PM)
Good question. They should've kept him. He'd be ideal in Mornhinweg's offense.
Tanner (Chapel Hill, NC)
Being an avid Jets fan, it really pains me to see us ranked at 32 in the preseason power rankings. However, this ranking perplexes me. Compared to last years 6-10 team (with revis, holmes, and Keller injured), the jets have gained Milliner, Richardson, and Ivory while replenishing the O-line. And we get Holmes back. The only real losses were at safety... What am I missing here that makes this year's team worse than last year's 6-10 squad?
Rich Cimini (2:34 PM)
I wouldn't put too much stock in power ratings.
Ethan (San Diego)
Rich, since I am sure you wont get ANY questions about the QB situation, I figured I may as well ask one! I am going on the assumption that Geno is on the roster bc he is a rookier and Sanchez is safe because of the contract. Since the Jets will likely only take 3QBs into the season, who do you think the 3rd QB will be?
Rich Cimini (2:35 PM)
I wouldn't assume Sanchez is safe. THere's still a chance he could be traded or cut at the end of the preseason.
rich, the team signed 15 undrafteds!can any make an impact on the team?zach rogers looked decent! any chance for him?
Rich Cimini (2:36 PM)
ask me in a week. I'll take a good look at him in the rookie camp. Obviously, he was overshadowed At Tenn by PAtterson and Hunter. Maybe the Jets have a sleeper. We'll see.
42 years is enough (Great Neck, NY)
post your question or comment Your impression of Idzik thus far (and please discount the yapping of Revis and his camp about Idzik assuring him he'd remain a Jet -funny how Revis's agents worked a deal with the Bucs within 4 days).
Rich Cimini (2:46 PM)
Idzik has a definite, long-term plan. I haven't been surprised by anything he has done -- well, maybe I was little surprised that he stripped it down by letting every veteran FA walk away. He had to make the Revis trade. There was no way to pay him $16M. It was the right call. I don't know if these draft picks will work out, no one does. But the man has a plan and he has changed the culture around the building.
Hey Rich, enjoy your NYJ coverage. Obviously there are a lot of questions regarding Geno Smith's maturity (texting during interviews, his attitude during the draft). In your experience covering football, do you think this is something that other players can rub off him, or is this something that will be damning to his character and affect his potential as starter?
Rich Cimini (2:48 PM)
The only thing that matters is what he does from now on. His job -- every QB's job -- is to be the hardest working guy on the team. The QB is the tone setter. If he works his butt off, teammates will respect him. If he plays well, teammates will love him.
Ed (Queens Village)
Why is Terry Bradway still with Jets after failed stint as GM?
Rich Cimini (2:48 PM)
The organization (or at least the pre-Idzik administration) values Terry as a top scout.
Matthew (Bronx, NY)
So, what's up with Aaron Berry? Does he even exist anymore? Is he gonna play any role this year?
Rich Cimini (2:49 PM)
Rex mentioned him the other day; says he likes his potential.
Rich, What do you think the plan is to improve the offensive skill players ? They cant go into this season similar to last year, no ?
Rich Cimini (2:50 PM)
Alas, it looks like the same crew at WR/TE, minus Keller. The RBs are better, so an improved run game will help the other areas.
i'm certainly no expert on college players, or even nfl players, but all the analysts bf the draft say you should never draft for need. always take best player available. If that is true, the Jets got 3 players in top 20 of most boards. Understandably Geno Smith must become a legit starter, but it seems like a good draft. Are people really upset we didnt draft a guard in the first round?
Rich Cimini (2:50 PM)
You could argue they got the best CB, best DT and best QB. Ain't bad.
What's your prediction on the TE situation? Is Cumberland the only legit starter, or do Reuland and Hayden Smith have legitimate shots to beat him out?
Rich Cimini (2:51 PM)
I;m not even sure Cumberland is a legit starter.
Also Rich, would like to add an extension to my last question. Do you think the Jets will try to shop Powell or McKnight?
Rich Cimini (2:52 PM)
Very interesting question. McKnight might have some value because of KR ability. I could see that.
Mike Maynard (Maryland)
Ghosts of Kotite this season, Rich? And can we add some familiar faces back to the offensive roster -- Braylon and Brandon for starters?
Rich Cimini (2:52 PM)
No on Brandon. Braylon a maybe.
Is Garrard a possibility to become the starter come Week 1 or is it a Geno vs Sanchez ?
Rich Cimini (2:53 PM)
I wouldn't rule out Garrard.
John (Long Island)
Hi Rich - Do the jets have any interest in Brandon Lloyd? Thanks
Rich Cimini (2:54 PM)
Lot of Lloyd questions. Frankly, I don't think he's that good. Neither did the Patriots. But, honestly, I'm not sure how the Jets feel about him.
Besides needing to lose weight, do you think Coples can succeed in this new role?
Rich Cimini (2:54 PM)
Coples made an interesting point. His biggest concern is playing and tackling in space. Tough for a 280-lb man.
Rich Cimini (2:55 PM)
Sorry, folks, but I'm going to cut it a little short today. I'm going to the store to see about buying one of the soccer-style headbands that Sanchez wore yesterday. Kidding. Gotta run. Have a great weekend. Rich
