Stephania Bell (2:57 PM)
Hi folks: I'm on my way but will be joining in a few minutes. Need to re-establish IT connection!
Stephania Bell (3:11 PM)
I'm back. OK - here we go...
Hi Starphania. You are definitely not a cone! Thoughts on A-Gon? Is his neck injury something that can continue ROS and, if so, how might it impact his production?
Stephania Bell (3:12 PM)
Joe: I'm hearing the team does not think it's a big deal. Should be able to play through it and while it might nag at him enough to affect his performance short-term (think next week or two), unless he specifically does something to aggravate it, see this disappearing.
What's the word on Hanley?
Stephania Bell (3:13 PM)
Brandon: Still not doing too much. It's early, given the extent of his injury.
Sounds like Beachy is pitching in actual games again. When do you expect him to be back to the big leagues? Do you expect him be the same pitcher at some point this season?
Stephania Bell (3:16 PM)
Patrick: Well, we're just talking the early part of games...like extended spring training. Then there are minor league starts with gradually increased time (pitches/innings). Could be a month or more, depending on how the elbow responds. Same thing I always say about guys returning from TJ. Don't expect consistent results first year back. Velocity often good but location, command often inconsistent.
Hi Stephania, How is Ryan Madson progressing?
Stephania Bell (3:18 PM)
Joe: Getting through some rehab outings. Sounds like he's feeling good, still not quite the zip on the ball he had pre-injury. The biggest thing is that he's not likely to be the closer when he returns (Angels have already said this). They will put him in set-up role, work him in gradually. So, not clear really what to expect initially but it does look like his return to the majors is coming soon.
When will hayward be back?
Stephania Bell (3:19 PM)
Brad: I expect it will be this weekend vs Dodgers.
Cuddyer got an epidural for his neck. Sounds painful, but he's expected back right away upon being eligible. Is this something that could come back to bite him again?
Stephania Bell (3:21 PM)
Mark: Absolutely. We already know his problem is chronic, although I believe this is his first DL stint for it. You have to lay low for a few days following the epidural. It's essentially a steroid injection in the area of the spinal nerve root to help calm inflammation (and therefore ease the pain). Sometimes helpful, sometimes not. But the problem has a high likelihood of recurrence, the challenge is we have no idea whether that's again soon or whether he has a reprieve for a while.
Granderson back tonight? Marry me?
Stephania Bell (3:22 PM)
Jake. Likely yes. Definitely no. But, thank you.
Aaron Hill (Arizona)
What is the deal with my hand? Why isn't it healing as expected and when can I expect to be back?
Stephania Bell (3:24 PM)
Aaron: Are you taking Calcium supplements? Not overdoing it with your hand? Other than that, just need to keep in mind that everyone heals at different rates. The wise thing is to wait and see evidence of decent bone healing without pushing it too soon. Without hearing more specifics from your team about what they're seeing (or not seeing) on the CT scan, hard for me to give you a projection.
Adrian (Las Vegas)
Hi Stephania, what can we expect from A-Rod when he returns after the All Star Break, will he be close to 100%?
Stephania Bell (3:26 PM)
Adrian: Hmmm. Nobody's asked about him for a while. Based on the fact that he's progressed to working out in FL, and given the actual activity he's doing, it looks like he'll be ready to go right around post-ASB. Other than being a little rusty from not playing in the big leagues for a while, I'm not really expecting any major limitation. It's just that he's been on a general decline over the last few years and I don't see that changing.
Greinke back tomorrow night?
Stephania Bell (3:26 PM)
Kev: Expect so, yes.
Stephania, my DL spot is full and I have have YOUK and not much bench spots...whats his deal, do i hold on to him with not a lot of 3rd base options out there? any idea when he will be ready to roll, and will he get back to business as expected?? Thanks!!!
Stephania Bell (3:30 PM)
mac: Well, he was eligible to return yesterday and obviously didn't. He's doing some light baseball activities but that's it. Doesn't sound like he's exactly on the verge of return but the Yankees haven't offered much in the way of a timetable. They knew when they signed him that he came with some chronic back/hip problems and now it's a matter of trying to bring him back in a way that doesn't end up turning into re-injury and threaten his season. Remember, they rested him a week, then tried to let him play and it all went backwards and they lost the DL time. Soooo...I'm not exactly full of confidence that this just "goes away."
How long would Pujols be out if they put him on the DL and tried to fully heal his foot?
Stephania Bell (3:31 PM)
Todd: Don't think they haven't thought of it. The problem with plantar fasciitis is it will feel good as soon as you rest it, then hurt as soon as you use it. I was at a conference a couple weeks ago with some folks doing research on PF and the average recovery is 10 months!!! And that's not with the demands of an in-season athlete, so much harder to manage. But that's what they're going to keep trying to do.
Doug (Grand Rapids)
How is Prince Fielder such an iron man? How does he not only stay healthy but also never take more than a day or two off through the entire season? Isn't that nuts?
Stephania Bell (3:32 PM)
Doug: I ask that question in my mind every time I watch him. I. Don't. Know. Some people just seem to stay healthier than others, even those who don't necessarily look like they would.
Hi Stephania,JJ Putz avoiding surgery but does that mean he'll be back this year?
Stephania Bell (3:35 PM)
Anthony: Well that's the hope. But these degenerative pitcher elbow injuries are so hard to project. It's often the case that the findings haven't changed much on MRI over time but the body's ability to tolerate it has. We won't know until they have him try throwing again whether he has a good shot or not.
Stephania, Coco Crisp is expected back tomorrow without going on a rehab assignment. Is the lack of a rehab assignment any cause for concern? How likely is he to be effective, given what he does, with the hamstring still not 100%? Will they play him everyday?
Stephania Bell (3:37 PM)
Brad: Always worrisome. Especially with the ease with which hamstrings go backwards. But Crisp, interestingly, has dealt with similar type injuries in a similar way before. Has shown his ability to come back on a few days rest from a minor strain which is why I think they're willing to listen to him here. No guarantees though.
Fred: (Beantown Bunker)
I am surprised at the speed at which Baily is recovering. i dropped him thinking he would be out at least an extra week and someone grabbed him as soon as he cleared waivers. Is he bionic now? Whats up?
Stephania Bell (3:38 PM)
Fred: I'm not convinced this is completely resolved. Biceps tendinitis near the shoulder in a thrower can be a big problem. And he has plenty of injury issues in his recent past. Especially given how recently he had surgery, there's reason to be concerned about his shoulder. I HOPE he does well and this was just a blip but I'm not sold on it.
Al (Wausau, WI)
Stephania, I just found out that Wei Yen Chen (one of my fantasy baseball pitchers) has been added to the DL. Do you know anything about his injury?
Stephania Bell (3:38 PM)
Al: Oblique. Probably plan on a month or so.
How is Giancarlo Stanton's rehab going, any timetable for his return?
Stephania Bell (3:40 PM)
John: Have not heard much but remember that he had a pretty significant injury so it's just quiet rehab early on. No baseball activity yet and prob won't be for a while. Not expected before June and even then it will be a daily assessment process.
dave (Redding, CT)
Stephania, Donovan Solano recently hit the DL. When do you expect him back?
Stephania Bell (3:43 PM)
Dave: While we're on the Marlins...I think the fact he hadn't responded to a couple days of rest is why they moved him to the DL. They could backdate it so he's eligible to return by the end of the week (I think Sunday?)You're seeing more teams do this early on when a player develops "tightness in his side." It's early in the season. They don't want a full tear of the oblique, so they extend the rest time a little bit more now. This is what the Braves did with Freeman and it seems to have paid off.
Bill (Chicago, IL)
Any word on Corey Hart? Did he have a set back?
Stephania Bell (3:45 PM)
Bill: Not recently. I always thought his ideas of how early he'd be back were a bit unrealistic given that he had some resurfacing of his cartilage done. Once he was transferred to the 60-day DL it became a moot point. Believe he's eligible to return at the very end of May and that has now become the (more realistic) target. Of course that will all depend on how he responds to a rehab assignment once that begins, so things can change.
Are you concerned with Altuve's jaw?
Stephania Bell (3:46 PM)
Conor: If by concerned you mean have a lot of sympathy pain for, then yes. That hurts like crazy. Don't think it will impact him for too long but now he's on the bereavement list too so unclear when he'll return.
Hi Stephania. Anything on Luebke?
Stephania Bell (3:48 PM)
Brandon: Not much really. Had a setback in his throwing program which slowed him down some and he's doing flat ground throwing. Could still make the June timetable but too early to say for sure.
Colby Lewis now has Tricep issues....is that normal considering he hasnt pitched?? will this delay / hurt him coming back?
Stephania Bell (3:50 PM)
Tom: Nothing surprises when these guys are working their way back from surgery on a long rehab. It's not always the throwing that sets them back. I don't think there's a huge concern that this will throw him off his schedule significantly but as is standard, it does force them to back him down for a bit, then push again when they think he's out of the woods.
Dream Weaver update please??
Stephania Bell (3:52 PM)
matt: Throwing...but still working some things out. The bigger issue for him is the down time he had to take to allow the elbow (even though it was in his non-throwing arm) to heal to the point where he could go through a throwing motion. Needs to get his rhythm back and needs to restore endurance in his arm. Nothing but time allows him to do that. Still think you're looking at the original 6 week timetable (which means later this month).
Any update on Jose Reyes' timetable? When do you expect him back? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:55 PM)
Austin: I've seen his timetable all over the map but I still don't believe he returns before the All-Star Break. He's still so early in the healing process. The thing is he's starting to feel better, which is when guys get optimistic. Then they have to start doing the stuff that's hard for the ankle - agility, cutting, sliding! Much more challenging and often slows them down. Plus they have to get confidence back in the ankle. Think it will be a hard road.
Stephania, any update on Adam Eaton? Thanks
Stephania Bell (3:56 PM)
Anthony: Still DH'ing as far as I know. The true test of his elbow will come when he has to start playing the field. Until we see how he looks doing that it's hard to make a projection. Expect the hitting to go fine.
Any update on Josh Johnson?
Stephania Bell (4:00 PM)
Suzie: I feel contractually ob;ligated to write about Johnson...and I had such high hopes for him this year. I'm a bit surprised by this one and it does seem to be going a little slower than I expected. It may be that they are being very careful in his progression given his history the last few years. With someone like him there's always the worry that if he tries to press through something minor and it changes his mechanics enough, it could set him up for a lot worse. Given that he worked on some mechanical things in the offseason, they may be even more sensitive to potential changes. Either way, it looks like it will be at least a couple more weeks.
Obviously no injury, but what do you think of shopping Tulo in anticipation of his eventual injury?
Stephania Bell (4:01 PM)
Paul: Ahhhh...the power of positive thinking...I suppose it's a worry that he's earned but I'm not sure I would do that.
Stephania Bell (4:02 PM)
All right everyone, thanks so much for the awesome questions. Really great group today and I appreciate you stopping by. We'll see if we can't work some of the other names we didn't get to into the discussion soon. Have a great week! And please, stay healthy.
