Garry Paskwietz (5:01 PM)
Welcome. Let's get started.
Whats the statues with Delvon Simmons transfer and visit to USC? Does it look like a good possibility he will transfer to USC?
Garry Paskwietz (5:02 PM)
Delvon took a visit to USC early this week but there have been no updates with him since the visit ended. I would say there is a very legitimate chance that he could end up at SC, particularly since he had so much interest in the Trojans when he was coming out of high school. This would be a huge pick-up for Orgeron and company, a quality veteran interior lineman to add to the rotation.
Kalven (Bay Area)
I know Adore Jackson and Michal Quick are great recruits but right now I think kids like Mama and Tucker are must get. Our OL has been the problem this past season not skill players.
Garry Paskwietz (5:04 PM)
I hear what you're saying so you have to like the emphasis of the class so far with so many linemen in the fold. I definitely agree that Mama and Tucker would be terrific additions as well and they are certainly priorities. Right now I like the Trojans chances on Mama but I think Tucker is going to be a battle with ASU in the end.
Garry. When is the first football practice?
Garry Paskwietz (5:05 PM)
It is tentatively set for the first week of August, I believe August 6th.
Pietro (San Francisco)
Any late-breaking news on Matthew Thomas and Eddie Vanderdoes?
Garry Paskwietz (5:07 PM)
No. There has not been any news out of the Thomas camp since Matthew's mom came back into the country. As far as Vanderdoes, Eddie hasn't made any statements either on the situation although his dad made some comments to the local paper which indicate that something is definitely going on. The big rumor in recruiting circles is that Vanderdoes is looking to go to UCLA, which would certainly be bad news for SC fans. The big question now is does either school let the player out of the scholarship and that's a situation that a lot of people are watching closely because it could set a precedent.
Corey James (Lakewood)
Hey Garry,, Why hasn't kiffin offered Dwight Williams yet? Its kind of funny that 3 of his younger team mates have recieved offers but yet he hasn't. If kiffin doesn't offer him soon then we can kiss he & Adoree good bye.
Garry Paskwietz (5:10 PM)
I don't know the specific reason but there is definitely a block between the SC coaches and Dwight on this one. On the surface, it appears that Dwight would be a quality enough player to fill one of the 20 spots, plus you have the ancillary benefit of Serra being a feeder school for SC lately. But as you mentioned, it is certainly noticeable to Dwight and everybody else that he has no offer while multiple guys do who are younger than him. That's a touchy one.
Kalven (Bay Area)
Am I the only one that think Bryce Dixon is a better TE prospect then Tyler Luatua?
Garry Paskwietz (5:11 PM)
Bryce Dixon is a very good tight end and I think it was a good offer for the Trojans to make. I think the difference comes with Luatua's blocking ability, he's one of the better blocking tight ends I've seen in high school in recent years. If you ask me to pick between the two, the blocking is what would separate them.
Did Delvon Simmons make his SC visit this weekend and how likely is it he picks SC? And a lot of people seem to be saying Matthew Thomas will pick Georgia as a compromise with his mom if he doesn't attend FSU, do you see it that way too?
Garry Paskwietz (5:14 PM)
There hasn't been any confirmation from Simmons in recent days. He was very secretive during his recruitment in high school so I doubt we hear many updates this go around either but i do think SC has a legit shot. Yes, Georgia is definitely a "compromise" option for Matthew Thomas and his family. But I also think USC is the school he wants to attend and if his parents buy off on letting him make the best decision for him, I could see him ending up a Trojan.
Pietro (San Francisco)
Any chance we'll see the Todd McNair NCAA e-mails soon? And do you think these malicious e-mails (as the judge described them) might lead the NCAA to review or rescind USC's sanctions?
Garry Paskwietz (5:16 PM)
The common thought is that the e-mails will never see the light of day because the NCAA will settle with McNair before that happens. If they do end up getting released, and if there is damning info which gives USC reason to rethink things, Pat Haden has said he wouldn't rule out any further moves from the school.
Is Eddie Vanderdoes really not going to enroll at Notre Dame? & if so does USC have a real shot to land him??
Garry Paskwietz (5:18 PM)
It sure looks like he is trying to get out of enrolling at Notre Dame. There has been no word from Eddie but his father gave a statement to a local newspaper that made the rumors seem legit. The consensus rumors also have Eddie looking to attend UCLA, not USC. He had the Bruins among his top choices at the end of his recruitment so that wouldn't be a huge surprise.
When does the 2013 class enroll in school? & when does fall camp begin? Thank you
Garry Paskwietz (5:20 PM)
Today is the first day of summer classes and guys like Hutchings have already tweeted about attending their first college class. Summer throwing sessions will get going again next week as well so that will be a great opportunity to see the team back on the field twice a week. The fall camp practice sessions will start in the first week of August.
I believe kiffin is trying to ruin the '14 recruiting class. i know it may sound crazy but i don't believe they're going all in this recruiting cycle. Their are a number of really good local guys without offers ex. D. Williams, M. Ware, J. Cobb, V. Talamaivao, just to name a few. I think if he goes down he's bringing SC down with him.
Garry Paskwietz (5:22 PM)
I don't know if I'm ready to join you on that statement. Those guys are all on the bubble and I can make an argument about why each of them could have an offer but I'm not going to rule out any of them getting an offer eventually. The commits that the Trojans (and Kiffin) have so far are pretty good so let's wait and see how things end up when all is said and done.
Obet Martinez (Huntington Beach, CA )
Hello Garry! Who would you say is USC's best recruiter? And, is that person recruiting Adoree Jackson and JuJu Smith? #musthave
Garry Paskwietz (5:24 PM)
I would still put Ed Orgeron in the lead spot but Tee Martin has moved into the No. 2 spot. Tee really resonates with kids and he has taken over the territory for Kennedy Polamalu that includes Serra and Poly.
I think its smart that kiffin is offering so many class of '15 kids already. I believe he needs to get an early jump on them right now since we will have so many scholarships available. HBU Garry?
Garry Paskwietz (5:25 PM)
And the 2015 kids that he is offering are legit. I also liked the offer earlier this week to 2016 wide receiver Brandon Burton. I first saw Burton last summer and he was definitely a guy you pegged as a no-brainer.
Ed (New Mexico)
Garry, While we know from last year that they don't mean much, do you see USC gettting any more early commits in the near future? Thanks.
Garry Paskwietz (5:27 PM)
It wouldn't surprise me at all. This staff historically picks up some verbals in May and June after the evaluation period and the SC team camp.
sparky48 (port hueneme)
any new on LBs leaning towards SC.
Garry Paskwietz (5:30 PM)
I would say D.J. Calhoun from Northern California is one to watch. Calhoun is part of a group of recruits up there that are friends and all of them are considering USC.
Oscar Batista (Irwindale CA)
Hey Gary, If and thats a big IF Eddie Vanderdoes is granted his release from ND and decides to come to USC, will he count for the 2013 Recruiting Class? We he be a good fit with the new defensive scheme? Thanks
Garry Paskwietz (5:31 PM)
Yes, Eddie would count as a 2013 recruit and the Trojans have room to add him. Without a doubt he would be a good fit in the new defensive scheme as an interior lineman, either at nose tackle or defensive end. Right now however, the rumor winds for Eddie are blowing in the direction of Westwood.
Vanderdoes'nt (Nor Cal)
Garry,Can you remind me again why I am not considering attending USC after my recent decommit from ND? Thanks - Eddie V
Garry Paskwietz (5:33 PM)
No Eddie, I cannot. I think a lot of Trojan fans would be very happy if you considered SC and ended up a Trojan.
billy (santa monica )
do you see Nathan Starks and usc a match ?
Garry Paskwietz (5:36 PM)
Talent-wise, yes. Starks has some impressive physical skills as a running back and there is a reason why SC offered him so early. But we haven't heard the details yet of why he left Bishop Gorman and that is a wild card variable in terms of him matching with USC. These days the Trojans are walking a fine line with limited scholarships so they will do their homework on the circumstances of his departure before moving forward with his recruitment.
Matthew (Bay Area)
Which incoming freshman other than the EE are you most excited about?
Garry Paskwietz (5:38 PM)
Steven Mitchell. this guy is dynamite and he should fall in line as the next big playmaker for the Trojans. I'm also looking forward to seeing Michael Hutchings. i think he is being very underrated for what he is going to bring to the table
saul (culver city )
what are usc chances with the following ,Terry Beckner Jr ,Canton Kaumatule and Jashon Cornell ? sorry for getting ahead of myself
Garry Paskwietz (5:42 PM)
Cornell has an SC offer but I haven't heard that the Trojans have a great shot. No offer to Kaumatule or Beckner (class of 2015).
Kennedy (Manhattan Beach, CA)
Garry, of the current five commits, who's the most solid? Via interviews, my vote is Lobendahn. Smallwood and Maloata seem shaky at best. Speaking of commits, who's next to verbal to 'SC? Assuming the next will take place around Rising Stars. Fight on!
Garry Paskwietz (5:46 PM)
I would agree on Lobendahn. I also think he's a solid and versatile player, reminds me somewhat of Lenny Vandermade. It's obviously hard to tell with guys like Smallwood but i will say this, I was very impressed with him at the Nike Camp last weekend, more so than I expected to be. Such quick feet and good use of hands. I think Maloata sticks, his life has been a whirlwind the last few months with coming over from Samoa but SC was the dream school for him and his father with a strong Polynesian history in the Trojan program. This guy has some serious upside too. It would surprise me to see one of the Northern California group, someone like Adarius Pickett, commit over the summer.
John (Victorville, CA)
Was SC as a team really as bad as 7-6 or was it the scheme/defense that lost so many games?
Garry Paskwietz (5:48 PM)
I don't think that was a 7-6 football team in terms of talent. Scheme and defense were certainly a big fault, as was coaching management. A lot of those issues have been addressed so it will be interesting to see the impact next fall.
Matthew (Bay Area)
Since you have watched these guys for almost 3 years now, how would you compare the current QBs talent (not playing style) to former USC signal callers?
Garry Paskwietz (5:51 PM)
i compare Cody Kessler in so many ways to Rodney Peete. Both are terrific all-around athletes who aren't pure drop back passers but they are guys who get things done on the football field whatever way possible. They have great leadership and other players respond to that. Max Wittek is more of your classic drop back type with the cannon for an arm, I would compare him to someone like Kyle Wacholtz, who was a co-starter on 1995 Rose Bowl team.
Sway (State College, PA)
So just to confirm, is Michael Wyche coming in Winter or Summer this coming year. His new film looks alot better than his first one. Excited about him.
Garry Paskwietz (5:52 PM)
Michael will arrive at USC next January. He is the kind of kid you can't help but root for when you hear his story and he certainly seems to have the ability to be a very good interior lineman.
Gary, does USC have a realistic chance of getting Delvon Simmons, Eddie Vanderdoes, or Matthew Thomas on campus? And which, if any, are the coaches going hardest after?
Garry Paskwietz (5:54 PM)
I think the best chance is with Simmons. He is free and clear to make a choice and he's long has interest in the Trojans. Thomas would be next but he has some hurdles to clear with getting released from FSU and then getting the family to buy off on him heading west. I would put Vanderdoes as the least likely, if he gets released from ND all indications are that he wants to attend UCLA.
Pietro (San Francisco)
Why doesn't USC get more JUCO players like Morgan Breslin? It seems like these players, because they're already developed, are less of a risk.
Garry Paskwietz (5:56 PM)
It's not as easy as snapping your fingers and finding a guy who can come in and get 13.5 sacks. SC actually has a pretty good history of JC guys filling need, in recent years there have been guys like Jordan Cameron, John Drake and Will Poole. This year there is already a JC commit in Michael Wyche.
Hyothetically if USC manages to get both Vanderdoes and Thomas, does Kiffin get smeared for tampering, fairly or not?
Garry Paskwietz (5:57 PM)
It wouldn't surprise me at all to hear that. There were already plenty of barbs aimed at Kiffin on various boards when the Thomas news first broke that he was looking to leave.
Chris (Hermosa Beach)
Speedy Noil put USC in his top 3 (oddly, local favorite LSU was excluded). What are the odds he actually ends up a Trojan? Is there talks at least to set up an OV?
Garry Paskwietz (5:59 PM)
It was noticeable that LSU wasn't on list, wasn't it? At this point it does look like Noil wants to take an official visit and that's a good sign. SC has shown they know how to use playmaking receivers so i would never rule out a playmaking receiver wanting to add his name to that list.
bill (manhattan beach)
Gary, thanks for all you do. I feel we should bring in 3cb's, 5OL and 5DL. And if we bring in 6OL why not if they are top prospects. I feel QB is not priority, and only 2wr, 1rb. Your thoughts please
Garry Paskwietz (6:01 PM)
Thanks Bill. I agree on the line numbers and have no problem loading up if the talent is there. I would take a quarterback, simply because most coaches (including Kiffin) like to carry 4 QB's at all times. SC only has 3 on the roster right now so if you don't take a QB this year, you run the risk over the next two years of someone going down and only having two available quarterbacks, that is risky. It also wouldn't surprise me if they take two QB's in 2015, which is looking like a very good crop at the position.
Looking at Mel Kipers top draft prospects it seemed like USC was barely represented while Notre Dame and Stanford players were all over the place. How is this possible when USC has out recruited them every year?
Garry Paskwietz (6:02 PM)
it says something about how the NFL is looking at player development at those schools in recent years. The best way to change that perception is to have the players ready to go when they leave and to do well in the NFL.
Garry Paskwietz (6:03 PM)
That's all for today. Talk to you again next week.
