Chat with Cam Newton
In 2011, Newton was the first rookie to pass for more than 400 yards in back-to-back games.
Welcome to SportsNation! On Wednesday, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton stops by to chat about the NFL offseason and preparing for 2013.
Newton followed up his rookie record-breaking 2011 season, in which he won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award, with an impressive sophomore season in 2012. Last year, he threw for more than 3,800 yards, while rushing for more than 700 yards.
Newton has teamed up with Gatorade's Beat the Heat program to help prevent heat-related illnesses with education and prevention among athletes, parents and coaches. Through the program, Newton is a part of the NFL's hydration awareness efforts. Go here for more information.

Cam is here!
Cam, what attracted you to working with Gatorade? There have been a lot of top athletes that have worked with them over the years.
Cam Newton (4:05 PM)
I think Gatorade is a pinacle of marquee athletes all over the world. As you see on all of the commercials, to have my name affiliated with them is awesome. All I drank was Gatorade growing up. That's all we did was drink it and pour it on our faces like in the commercials. It challenges me to be on my toes to become a marquee athlete as well.
What are some of your favorite stadiums to play at on the road?
Cam Newton (4:05 PM)
Obviously, being from Atlanta, I love playing in the Georgia Dome. Reliant Stadium in Houston is one of the loudest. Baltimore, I don't think I've played there yet, but we get to this preseason.
Do you feel any more pressure being the biggest star athlete in a small city?
Cam Newton (4:06 PM)
Absolutely not. It just makes me accountable for what I do on and off the field.
What's the best thing to know about preventing heat-related illnesses?
Cam Newton (4:07 PM)
That's what we're working on with Gatorade with the Beat the Heat campaign. Just making athletes, coaches and parents aware of hydration and the importance of it to perform at a high level. People don't realize that you need to prepare for the sport and the workout and then afterward, putting the right things in your body.
Melo (South Orange, NJ)
What are some of the improvements that you are making in year 3?
Cam Newton (4:08 PM)
One thing that I feel I can work on is consistency and on the field, I feel I can protect the football better. You look at what makes one team better than the next is minimizing turnovers. Great defenses is the opposite, they're trying to create the turnovers. So I'll try to minimize as many TOs as I can.
Ace Boogie, Mike Vick recently stated he was still the fastest QB in the NFL. Do you think that is true?
Cam Newton (4:09 PM)
I have to give him that. Michael Vick is one of the fastest, not only QBs, but players in the league. I'd like to see him, RG III and Kaepernick.
What is your pre game routine like? Any rituals you like to go through? Or music playlist?
Cam Newton (4:10 PM)
One of the rituals is music. I'm big into listening and playing different types of music to get me going emotionally. One thing I look for is having pregame shoe. Under Armour makes a pregame shoe that I can't wear during the game, but the color schemes are amazing. That's been cool and one of the things I look forward to.
Is steve smith as funny as everyone thinks?
Cam Newton (4:11 PM)
He is! He really is. We have so many different pranksters on our team. He has to top the chart as one of the funniest guys on the team. He has a high leadership roles on the team and has influence. He breaks the ice in meetings with a joke here and there. It's one of the perks of being on his team.
Andrew Z. (Struthers, OH)
What's the best advice you've ever been given?
Cam Newton (4:12 PM)
The best advice I've been given is to have fun. You have some parents and coaches forcing their kids to play. I decided that I would play to have fun and want to do it. As I grew older and my level of play enhanced, that's one thing I had, was having fun playing the game I love.
Dapo Sangokoya (Fresno, California)
Did you approve of Dwyane Wade and Lebron James doing the superman celebration?
Cam Newton (4:12 PM)
Man, it's the game of sports. I was caught doing a LeBron move in the preseason. I'm a fan of those guys, whatever they do. When DWade did the Superman, he hit a game winning shot.
Deven (New York, NY)
What are your offseason workouts like, Cam?
Cam Newton (4:13 PM)
The offseason is different because you can challenge yourself off the field. You challenge yourself to have discipline. During the season, it's more structured time. I think that's the biggest difference.
Are the Panthers going to being running a lot of read option like they did last year?
Cam Newton (4:14 PM)
I think we're going to attack the defense in a lot of different ways, with the read option, the traditional ways, with Barner, with the RBs we already have. We'll see what's successful. You need to run to have success.
How do you think the new rookies are coming along?
Cam Newton (4:15 PM)
I've seen the rookies. They're doing an unbelievable job. They came in with a mindset to work and that's all you can ask for.
