Stephania Bell (11:03 AM)
Good morning everyone - thanks for joining on Friday. Yes, the Rockies had a rough injury night last night and Tulo will be out for a while once again...Who's on your mind?
Ian Kinsler is set to return this weekend. Is he 100%? Worried about him coming back too soon.
Stephania Bell (11:07 AM)
Kyle: I admit to being a bit surprised given the nature of the injury. It's really a pain-driven timeline so if he feels well enough to function, then he can play. It does make you wonder if he's getting anxious to be back and claim his spot in the lineup...only way to find out if he's really ready is to see how he holds up. Guess that's how the Rangers feel too.
Morning stephania! Saw a setback for m.Kemp. Can you explain and is there a possible rehab date now?
Stephania Bell (11:11 AM)
EJ: Don't think it's a setback so much as apprehension on his part because it doesn't feel totally normal. The memory of the huge setback is still fresh from last year so he doesn't wantto go too fast. All they're doing is pushing the rehab assignment back based on what he's saying. Don't think there's a date, just waiting for him to give the nod. think it happens within the week.
Chuck (Beatrice, NE)
I've heard your concerns about Reyes' production/ re-injury risk when he returns. Is there anything that will make you less concerned that you will be looking for in his rehab assignment?
Stephania Bell (11:13 AM)
Chuck: I will be watching what he does closely. I want to know whether he's leading off the bag and getting back quickly if needed. Want to know when he's sliding, running from first to third for the sharp corners and turning a double play. Want to see how he reacts to all of that...and I think he needs an opportunity to see all of those situations but you never know what you'll get. I am still a little nervous about his return coming sooner.
Is Braun headed for the DL?
Stephania Bell (11:15 AM)
Dan: Strange situation. Brewers have said they don't think DL will necessarily help this to heal, it's a question of pain tolerance. Well, he hasn't been tolerating it enough to be able to perform recently, even trying to adjust his swing. Bottom line is we can see it's affecting his power so if it continues to be painful, his productivity will be down.
Read Stras might be back as soon as this weekend. Business as usual when he returns?
Stephania Bell (11:16 AM)
Matt: Yes, given green light for Sunday. And yes, expect it to be business as usual. Not convinced he's never going to have another injury worry this year but think he'll throw strong until/unless he runs into another episode.
Eddie (Hoboken, NJ)
Getting in early in case I have to run but I am a Price and Beachy owner and would like your opinions on when you think Price will be back, and do I start him right away? Do I start Beachy right away next week against the Mets?
Stephania Bell (11:19 AM)
Eddie: Now the Rays saying they like the way Price looked in a sim game so much, they might see him back sooner. Stressed might. Sounds like rehab assignment coming this week, we'll have to see how many starts they think he needs. I'm still not confident we got the full picture on his injury ("triceps" - worried there's more shoulder). I'll be nervous until we get to the end of the season. Something just feels off.As for Beachy, you're taking a chance. Had a not great final rehab outing but then again, that's typical for guys coming off TJ. Likely to be some good days, some ugly. That said, nice he gets a start against the Mets.
Can we get a Tulo question? How does running/training affect a broken rib? Does it come down to pain tolerance or can he run, but just not swing a bat?
Stephania Bell (11:20 AM)
Paul: He can't run. Quiet breathing hurts - can barely do it after a rib fracture. Can't move your arms, rotate your body at all. Running with all the lung expansion and rotation, etc way too painful. So he will need to stay quiet for a while...more than a week..
How worried should I be about Anibal Sanchez?
Stephania Bell (11:23 AM)
Fernando: Well, they think he'll make his next start. I'm a little concerned that this may be a preview of something else to come but it sounds like they could be testing his arm out this week.
What can we expect from Aaron Hill in terms of timeline and effectiveness upon return?
Stephania Bell (11:25 AM)
Seth: I think he's surprising even himself with doing as well as he is hitting. Keep in mind that he has a non-union so the fracture has not healed. His hand is not normal and he still has discomfort. But the thought was to try and test it to see how well he could function. So far, so good and rehab assignment looks to be coming this week. My worry is that there will be something that comes along to make it worse. Awkward dive/slide, a hard swing and a miss...It could be a week, it could be months, or he could manage it just fine through the end of the season (still suspect he gets surgery afterward). It's a gamble.
What's the latest on Corey Hart? Original return was mid-May, then mid-June, now sometime after All Star Break? Any chance he returns by July 1?
Stephania Bell (11:26 AM)
Jeff: Just seems to be a very slow recovery, concern perhaps about the long-term health of the cartilage in his knees. I don't think we see him before the All-Star break.
Karl (Moraga, CA)
Do you think Napoli's hip will hold up all year? He's only played more than 114 games once in his career, and is currently on pace for 157.
Stephania Bell (11:28 AM)
Karl: No real reason to think it won't. The medication he's on seems to have helped him and the strengthening he did before the season has too.
Stephania Bell (11:29 AM)
Matt: To be re-evaluated next week after the two injections this past Monday. Eligible to return this weekend but won't. If the swelling stays down think they increase the activity gradually, prob at least another week although Monday we should learn more.
When will H.Street return to Padres?
Stephania Bell (11:33 AM)
Ryan: Looks like it will be next week. Throwing OK but wants to work out a couple things before returning. Calf seems to be behind him. Sounds like he may not close right away and Gregerson may stay put.
AJ Burnett's injury kind of came out of nowhere. Does this seem serious or do you think he'll be able to come off the DL when eligible?
Stephania Bell (11:34 AM)
Patrick: Doesn't have the sounds of being terribly serious and perhaps will be ready when eligible. Might be more worried about Marte who could have an oblique situation, although not definite.
Late again (WV)
Update on Fowler & Sandoval please...Thx
Stephania Bell (11:38 AM)
Better late than never: Fowler day-to-day. Sounds like he didn't need an X-ray and the issue, as you'd expect after taking a hit, is swelling that needs to subside. I'd plan on a few days.Sandoval has the Giants encouraged since he seems to be feeling better. Early reports of a hairline fracture sound like they were not accurate (although sometimes doesn't matter much as it is essentially managed similarly). Sounds like he could return when eligible but there will definitely be concern about him aggravating it at some point. After all, that's what happened this time.
Stephania, is CarGo's injury serious enough to keep him out of the weekend series?
Stephania Bell (11:41 AM)
Mike: think it could be. As you can imagine, that hit had to be really painful, given that there is so little soft tissue padding on the top and side of the foot. A deep bruise there can bruise the bone and if there's bony edema, that can be slow to quiet down. Not necessarily a DL requirement but the team will probably know more based on how he responds over next few days.
willem (Haarlem, holland)
Thanks for your (always well-informed) answers. What are your views on Gyorko?
Stephania Bell (11:44 AM)
Willem: From Holland! Excited to have international chat guests. Gyorko didn't seem to have a "serious" groin injury the other night but this falls in the "we-don't-want-it-to-become-serious" category. In other words, the DL may have been largely precautionary but until he ramps up baseball activity and we can see for ourselves that it's not serious, it's hard to project.
Stephania Bell (11:46 AM)
Bill: Sunday? Still sounds like they expect him to be back that day but I haven't heard anything definitive. Yes, there's reason to worry about it coming back this year. It already has once. But if he comes back and throws effectively then consider him back in business, at least temporarily.
Stephania,I'm eagerly anticipating Austin Jackson's return and was hoping it would be tonight. Any updates?
Stephania Bell (11:49 AM)
Brian: Still could be. Have not heard definitive word from Tigers. He has had solid rehab outings but they still get to make the late call. Seems like he has been slowly progressed which should help his chances of staying healthy once he's back.
Josh G (New Jersey)
Seems like he's never brought up these days, but any update on A-Rod? He seems to be heeling much quicker than expected, yet his return date is still a little bit before the ASB. Any chance he's back by July 1st?
Stephania Bell (11:51 AM)
Josh: I just don't see it. I think he's progressing through the necessary steps but there's zero reason to rush him back. And it's almost like the teams regroup after the break, which is a good time to roll him into the lineup.
Brett Lawrie Update?
Stephania Bell (11:53 AM)
LaDarius: Slow. But it shouldn't come as a huge surprise. It's a high ankle sprain that looked bad when it happened. So instead of the hopeful two weeks, think it's closer to four. At least he's moved out of the boot lately.
Stephania Bell (11:55 AM)
Brian: Hamstring, day-to-day. Doesn't look DL bound, at least not yet. He's had a bunch of these little injuries which are enough to protect him for several days so they don't become worse, but aren't excessively worrisome. The look on his face when he strained it tells me it's more than a cramp but not Stanton-like severity.
Hanley??? I do not think he nor the Dodgers know, so all I am asking for is a guess.
Stephania Bell (11:57 AM)
Nick: I love what you said because that's essentially the answer. Hamstrings - especially that degree of severity - are the worst. You do everything in your power as an athlete or the persone rehabbing the athlete to ensure "readiness," but there's no way to adequately simulate in-game action and you're really always rolling the dice to some degree. So now, the dice get rolled again. Hopefully comes up different this time. I'll guess that yes, he's in a better spot this time and stays healthy. Guess.
Jennifer (San Francisco)
I heard Granderson may be out until after the All-Star Break...fact or fiction? Is he ahead or behind schedule? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (11:59 AM)
Jennifer: Fact, at least fact that it was suggested. He had surgery to stabilize this fracture, needs to get back to swinging the bat and then there's the issue of him just not having played much baseball this year. legs should be healthy at least but will need some games to get in a rhythm. I don't see the push to get him before the break making sense. Not saying it's out of the question but they're building in some buffer time.
What's the word on Brandon McCarthy? I know he had a setback with the seizure too. Is that going to slow down his shoulder recovery?
Stephania Bell (12:02 PM)
Jim: It obviously interrupted things briefly but he's now on some medication which should help going forward. The result may only be a few days alteration in his total recovery window for his shoulder but we'll see how he does throwing. The shoulder itself may be the bigger concern.
Stephania Bell (12:03 PM)
Sooo sorry - the clock has caught up with us. Thanks so much for coming. As always, you bring great questions and give me blog ideas as well. So if it wasn't answered here, perhaps it will show up in one of the players we list in the Monday injury report. Have a great weekend - and stay healthy!
