Stephania Bell (3:02 PM)
Happy Tuesday everyone. Back in the 3 pm slot. Hope all are well. What injury concerns are on everyone's mind today?
Stephania Bell (3:06 PM)
Alex: Short and to the point. Simple thing is it seems they underestmated the time it would take for him coming off a high ankle sprain. Got the feeling this spring that the team has general concern about his potential for injury given the way he plays, virtually ensures they err on side of caution here. Still needs to be out of boot consistently before can even get to running, baseball activities. Sounds like still a few weeks away.
Pat (St Louis)
Do you see Gronk being on the PUP list at the beginning of the season?
Stephania Bell (3:08 PM)
Pat: Since we're talking about him everywhere today (since he's having back surgery right now), the answer is he very well could be. But it's too early to tell. May also be a factor of how the rest of their team looks. In other words, could carry him on the roster if not ready for Week 1 but they think he's ready for Week 4 for instance. Don't expect him Week 1. Nothing set in stone but we at least need evidence of some progress.
Is Brandon Beachy ever going to pitch effectively for the Braves this year?
Stephania Bell (3:10 PM)
Dave: I think he will but I think it will now be mid-late July (probably later) before we see him and then it will likely be innings limits out of the gate. Deeper starts will be a progression.
Cobb Owners (Everywhere)
Just saw Alex Cobb's breaking news. Doesn't seem optimistic. When will he start again? - thanks.
Stephania Bell (3:12 PM)
I think what you're hearing (the question of whether he will return to play this season) is reflective of the delicate nature of head injuries. No way they are going to rush him. Everything has to clear. Then gradual return to even light exercise, much less throwing a ball. Progression will be slow with a careful eye on his response. Certainly would not count on him at this point as everyone's main focus is that he gets better with no residual symptoms.
matt kemp. first it was the min days. now we dont know. precaution or excuse to get back to being MATT KEMP
Stephania Bell (3:13 PM)
Justin: Legit question. I've essentially posed the same thing. It's probably a combination of both, precaution from last year's memory of the bad hamstring and the need to try to get his swing back.
Will Braun be himself when he returns from injury? Would dealing him for Longoria be a good trade?
Stephania Bell (3:17 PM)
Garrett: No way to know. Earlier it sounded like the Brewers weren't convinced time off would be the trick. But obviously it was affecting him. Now they say he'll have to try to play through it. Probably going to be an on-again, off-again situation throughout the year.
Following up with Dave's question, your thinking Beachy will not start for the Braves until late July at this point?
Stephania Bell (3:18 PM)
Steve: That is my thought. No word from team that way. I'm just factoring in down time to let inflammation settle, restart of rehab assignment (not sure how long it will be), ALl Star break, etc
Boom! Stanton killing it. No question, just happy...
Stephania Bell (3:21 PM)
Jared: And I was worried about him! Never worried about his power, still want to see a couple weeks under his belt before we get too comfortable.
Who has the better chance of playing at there normal level first, Teixera or Reyes?
Stephania Bell (3:22 PM)
Nate: Tough. At this point I say Reyes because of Teixeira's setback. Not convinced he can get back same level consistently at all this year. Reyes I think can get there, just worried he can't get there as quickly as he's moving.
David Price, whats the deal?
Stephania Bell (3:23 PM)
John: I have been asking that since he went on the DL. Seems very, very cautious with him. Wonder about overall health of his shoulder. I know it's called a triceps injury but...Let's see some repeated downhill trhowing without any setback and maybe I'll feel better. Team not hinting at timetable yet either.
Tim (St. Paul)
Hi Stephania - We love the insight that you have.... What are you hearing about Adam Eaton's progress? If the arm is OK - can he contribute in the second half?
Stephania Bell (3:26 PM)
Tim: Thank you. He is hitting again as several folks have pointed out here. But hitting was never the problem! It wasn't until he played in the field that the elbow flared up and he only played there twice before it happened. So while it's encouraging that his activity is picking up, it doesn't mean much to me until we see how he handles throwing. That will be the big indicator. No word on when he'll begin hard throwing (he is reportedly on light throwing program).
James Z (NY)
Bryce Harper update?
Stephania Bell (3:29 PM)
James: Cleared to do a little more activity bit it's still low key. He has responded to the injections and the rest in terms of decreased soreness and swelling but still isn't out of the woods. Far from testing the knee with aggressive exercise. No timetable but he's sounding over a week out to me, maybe two.
Scott (Irvington, NY)
What are your thoughts on Marco Scutaro being able to play with a brace? Most people miss 4-6 weeks with his injury.
Stephania Bell (3:31 PM)
Scott: It's all relative to the ability to function with the injury. On another finger it might be impossible. In this case it's his pinkie and it seems he'll manage. Or at least he's going to try. If it doesn't go well, they could always pull him back.
Andy (Syracuse, NY)
Any news on Carl Crawford returning soon? much less a rehab assignment?
Stephania Bell (3:36 PM)
Andy: Nope. Once we heard that they thought he had a "significant" injury and would miss more than the 15 days, I figured they would go dark with regards to his status. So haven't heard anything yet. I think that we shouldn't expect them to tell us much until he's back running...which could still be a ways off.
Anibal Sanchez - is this serious? Are the Tigers just publicly downplaying it so they don't get fleeced at the trade deadline?
Stephania Bell (3:38 PM)
Carl: Not sure they know. Especially when you have a pitcher who has had surgery and then pitched several years on top of it, you don't expect a "clean" MRI. The question is really whether he can throw or not. Some guys with terrible looking MRIs are throwing fine and the reverse is also true. I think they are legitimately concerned but the only thing to do is wait and see how he responds to the DL stint. I'd be nervous.
How concerned should Longoria owners be? Plantar fasciitis is one of those nagging, never-really-goes-away injuries, isn't it?
Stephania Bell (3:40 PM)
Chad: It can certainly be a chronic issue. It's definitely much harder to manage in season (ask ALbert Pujols) because you can't really get the extended rest you need for full recovery. Can't say it will get worse but you will have to be checking his lineup status routinely.
Danny V (LA)
Hill and Utley both back by weeks end?
Stephania Bell (3:41 PM)
Danny: Looks like it could be the case for both but Hill less definitive. Team wants to hear from him how he feels like he's doing, that he's gotten enough at bats. Utley's progress appears more linear.
Any worries if AJ Burnett will miss more than the minimum? Any concerns when he comes back?
Stephania Bell (3:42 PM)
Nick: Not really. Seems like a minor issue and resting him now is the better way to go (ask Huston Street).
Stephania, any updates on Everth's hamstring?
Stephania Bell (3:43 PM)
Mike: Sounds like they're going to try for a few days off to see how he responds. A bit worrisome given Cabrera's immediate reaction - and he knows about hamstring injuries. One of those where you wonder if he'll do something first few days back to aggravate it. This presumes they allow him back in a few days. If he's still feeling something they could opt to DL him.
Is Buccholz headed for the DL?
Stephania Bell (3:44 PM)
Dan: It depends how the bullpen goes today. If he can't get through it or performs poorly, then I think he will end up there b/c this has been lingering arouns since he hurt the AC joint.
Any shattering news on Peavy you know that we do not?
Stephania Bell (3:45 PM)
Keith: No. Repeat MRI reportedly scheduled to check on healing. No update yet.
Danny boy (Charleston, SC)
Is Pagan going to have surgery?!
Stephania Bell (3:46 PM)
Danny: Still possible. SOunds like they're hoping to avoid, at least for now, but the doore remains open if he continues to have trouble with it.
Stephania Bell (3:47 PM)
Jon: SOunds like they're hoping for next week if throwing sessions/rehab start goes as planned. Still room for setbacks. Vague, shoulder inflammation is hard to predict.
jim (ormond beach fl)
status on putz
Stephania Bell (3:48 PM)
Jim: Bullpens have gone well. Next up is rehab assignment. If that goes well too, could rejoin team next week i would suspect.
Do you think Gyorko is back as soon as his 15 are up?
Stephania Bell (3:50 PM)
Brian: He is doing baseball activities (light fielding, not full bore) but that's at least a good sign. Sounds like he could be back when eligible but it's all dependent (as usual) upon how the groin feels when he ramps it up to full speed.
B. Short (Atlanta)
Stephania Bell (3:52 PM)
B.: Could return this weekend if no issues in rehab games. He was scheduled to start rehab assignment Monday and I have not heard how his first outing went. But the plan I believe was for 3 games which would allow him to return this weekend.
Any word on Alonso? Thanks.
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
Brian: Not really. Once the break was discovered, standard issue 4-6 week timetable. Of course we've seen (Aaron Hill) how that can go wrong if not healing well, but more often than not it fits within that bracket.
Granderson back before the all-star break?
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
Clark: Don't think so.
Gallo (Charleston, SC)
Asdrubal coming back soon!? THANKS!
Stephania Bell (3:55 PM)
Gallo: Well, he thinks so. Doing more aggressive running with quad, etc. He thinks he can be back within under two weeks, I'm not so sure. Want to see how he does when he's doing the hard core running and rounding the bases. Still, there's progress.
what's the deal with corey hart?
Stephania Bell (3:58 PM)
Craig: Overpromised, underdelivered. The nature of his surgery was more serious I believe than what he let on. And maybe he didn't really see it that way. Then they had to really control his activity as he was trying to return so as not to threaten the work that had been done. Not surprised that it's slow but a bit surprised it's been this slow. Better that than him coming back and going out again for a month or longer. But now even June not looking realistic. Prob ASB.
Stephania Bell (3:59 PM)
OK everyone - have to duck out. Headed over to join the NFL Live crew to talk about Gronkowski who had surgery today. Please keep the great questions coming via Twitter and will try to answer some more there later.Stay healthy!
