Garry Paskwietz (5:00 PM)
Hello everyone, let's get started
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What College Football Players will set School Records in 2013 for USC?
Garry Paskwietz (5:01 PM)
my best guess would be Marqise Lee and the USC career receptions record. Lee currently has 191 catches and the record is 252 held by Robert Woods.
How hard was it for CLK and his staff to watch Eddie Vanderoos go across town and for Michael Thomas to go to FSU?
Garry Paskwietz (5:02 PM)
Very hard for both Vanderdoes and Matthew Thomas. This staff is very competitive when it comes to recruiting and they take it hard when they miss.
Amir (Sherman Oaks)
Garry I've seen a lot of video from the throwing sessions and the one guy that looks real good to me, but is rarely mentioned is Ryan Dillard at CB. What are your thoughts about him and will he see PT?
Garry Paskwietz (5:04 PM)
Dillard is a solid player, especially for a walk-on, but I don't see him in the two-deep just yet. I can definitely see him as someone who has earned the chance to see spot duty and it wouldn't surprise me if that happens this year. He reminds me a lot of Darrell Rideaux.
ant2099 (Tempe city)
Will Greg TOwnsend Jr be backing up Uko and Williams or Kennard and Breslin? Do you expect a breakout season from him
Garry Paskwietz (5:06 PM)
Townsend would be behind Williams or Uko in one of the interior spots. Greg didn't participate in spring ball but he is expected back for fall camp. It would be a huge bonus for the defensive line if he can start showing the skills that made him such an elite recruit and I do think there's a chance that happens.
Does USC still have a shot with Viane Talamaivao, or has that ship sailed since we offered so late?
Garry Paskwietz (5:07 PM)
I think Viane is set with Alabama right now but there's a long way to go before signing day so anything can happen.
Charles (Diamond Bar)
Who will the trojans bring in at QB in this recruiting cycle since Keller Chryst is a lock to stanford? I think depending on how he performs at the Elite 11 we should go after KJ Carta Samuels. WBU Garry?
Garry Paskwietz (5:10 PM)
Kiffin definitely wants to bring in a quarterback, as evidenced by such an early offer to Chryst. Right now it does look like Stanford is the team to beat there, if that happens I would look to Brandon Dawkins before someone like Carta Samuels. Carta Samuels is a good prospect but his brother is at Vandy so that one is going to stick. Dawkins has been getting a lot of attention from SC so I think he would be just as much of a possibility as anyone. If it were up to me, I would take a long look at Manny Wilkins too.
Who's a better fitt in our new defensive system Bobby Okereke or Fred Warner, & what's the likelihood we land both??
Garry Paskwietz (5:12 PM)
Two very good athletes. Warner probably has the more traditional frame of an OLB in this system, he's a legit 6-foot-3 and a little over 200 pounds right now. Okereke is legit too, he may not be as tall but he is a versatile athlete. Okereke has a sister at SC and he could easily end up a Trojan. Warner is a BYU commit right now but it seems like the SC offer is giving him something to think about.
Hey Garry,, can you list some of the recruits who will be on hand at USC's rising stars camp?
Garry Paskwietz (5:13 PM)
Here are some of the top 2014 names who have said they will be there - Adoree' Jackson, Fred Warner, D.J. Calhoun, Bryce Dixon, Toa Lobendahn and Austin Maloata. Iman "Biggie" Marshall leads a strong group of 2015 prospects.
Is Victor Blackwell ready to step in and finally show what he can do?
Garry Paskwietz (5:14 PM)
I think so. I thought he really came on strong at the end of spring ball, particularly with the 7 catches for 155 yards and a touchdown in the spring game. He knows the opportunity that is there for the No. 3 receiving role and he's making no secret that he is out to claim it.
What's with the trojans not offering erik brown, & do you think SC not offering him led to him not camping with the trojans this weekend? thanks
Garry Paskwietz (5:17 PM)
I do think that's possible as he mentioned it in an interview a couple weeks back. His stock rose as much as any receiver in the area this spring but Kiffin hasn't seen enough yet to make an offer, that's the position Kiffin knows best so he knows what he is looking for and a good showing by Brown at the camp could clinch it.
Ryan (Los Angeles)
Why is there not more coverage about USC baskeball and its recruiting targets? what have you been hearing in regards to baskeball recruiting?
Garry Paskwietz (5:18 PM)
There was a good article today by Joel Francisco detailing all the teams in the Pac-12 http://insider.espn.go.com/college-sports/recruiting/basketball/mens/story/_/id/9403018/2014-pac-12-basketball-recruiting-primer. Some of the top SC prospects mentioned included Stanley Johnson, Jordan McLaughlin and Kameron Chatman.
Jake (Los Angeles)
What do you think of USC being ranked #25 in ESPN's future rankings? Also, what do you think about the extremely low coaching rating USC was given in those rankings?
Garry Paskwietz (5:21 PM)
i think the #25 ranking and the low coaching ranking go hand in hand right now. It's no secret that Lane Kiffin is viewed as being on the hot seat after the disappointing 2012 season and a lot of people are hedging their bets on the Trojans this year because they just don't know what they're going to get in Kiffin. As far as the three year projections of the future rankings, I think the impact of the sanctions is factored in as well. The good news is that there is still enough talent for SC to move up considerably if things fall the right way.
Do you see any of these guys getting offers from Kiffin, Jalen Brown, Jamardre Cobb, Marquise Ware, or Dwight Williams? I believe without an offer to Williams then we have no shot at Adoree or any of their 2015 & 16 team mates.
Garry Paskwietz (5:23 PM)
Sure, any of the players on that list could end up with an offer, all have gotten a long look already from the coaches. You may be right on Williams lack of offer impacting other Serra guys but, in the end, I think most players make the best decisions for themselves, not based on if someone they know got an offer.
Kalven (Bay Area)
When is the next SC camp and whats the chances we get a commit that day?
Garry Paskwietz (5:24 PM)
The Rising Stars camp is next week and there is always a chance for some verbals coming out of there. This is always the most star-studded camp of the year for the Trojans.
Do we have still have a decent chance with Adoree Jackson? He seems to be all Florida/East Coast according to the recent ESPN hot board
Garry Paskwietz (5:26 PM)
Sure there is a chance with Adoree' but it's not the lock that some USC fans may have hoped at the beginning of the recruiting process. He was projected Florida on the most recent Hot Board but he was projected to USC on the version before that. He could be back to USC on the next one, or at a school like LSU or Michigan. I wouldn't worry too much about this yet, some players are easier to project at this time of the year than others, Adoree' is not an easy one because he hasn't really narrowed things down too much yet.
Explain to me how our new defensive scheme is going to stop 1) the run game and 2) stop dual threat QB's?
Garry Paskwietz (5:28 PM)
By having an "extra" body along the line of scrimmage, the defense is designed to stop the run better and help contain the dual threat QB's. That improved ability against the spread is one of the main reasons Clancy Pendergast and his 5-2 defense were brought to SC. The biggest challenge is going to be the corner spot because they are on an island a lot in coverage since more emphasis is being placed on the line.
jeff t (whittier)
with robey gone, does sc have any shut down corners...or are we gonna play primarily zone.... ??
Garry Paskwietz (5:30 PM)
This defense has the corners playing a lot of man coverage so the ability to shut things down is a priority. I think the guy with the best potential in that area is Kevon Seymour, he has battled injuries in his time at SC but when healthy he is a tremendous man to man cover corner.
RC (Los Angeles)
Should Ty Isaac RS this year with all those RBs ahead of him? Does the incoming freshman, Justin Davis, really have a shot to start ahead of Silas Redd? And can you tell me about the running style of JD. Who is he more comparable to - Reggie Bush or Lendale White? Thank you.
Garry Paskwietz (5:33 PM)
I don't think we can answer that yet because we haven't seen Ty in action yet on the practice field. He will be given a look in fall camp to see if he is ready to get in the mix right away, the problem for Ty is that it may not be a very long look. There are a lot of guys ahead of him on the depth chart and several of them, such as Silas, Madden and Morgan, are coming off injuries so they will definitely take their full shares of reps to help get back in playing shape. I like Justin Davis a lot but I don't think he's going to start ahead of Silas. Davis has a winding running style, he's more Reggie than Lendale if those are the two choices I have but he's not really that similar to Reggie.
jeff t (whittier)
any players moving from defense to offense because of the receiver situation...or just position changes ??
Garry Paskwietz (5:34 PM)
There haven't been any switches to receiver, the main switch has been Dion Bailey to FS but the coaches had been clear that one was coming. Josh Shaw has also been at safety (SS) and that is a bit of a surprise after so much talk in spring of moving him to corner.
Charles (Diamond Bar)
Who do you see being the starting QB & the #3 WR Garry?
Garry Paskwietz (5:35 PM)
Right now I would go with Cody Kessler and Victor Blackwell.
Booker T (Georgia)
Is the Matthew Thomas saga over? Is there a chance he ends up at SC sooner or later?
Garry Paskwietz (5:36 PM)
It appears that the saga is over, for now, but i wouldn't absolutely rule out the possibility of something down the line. You just never know in a situation like this.
RC (Los Angeles)
Who do you count on as more likely to commit to USC at this point? The list at this point has not been as "talked-about" as last year. Do you think possible commits are waiting until mid-season or so to decide on USC?
Garry Paskwietz (5:38 PM)
I don't think there's any question that a lot of recruits are taking a "wait-and-see" approach with the Trojans this year. If SC gets off to a strong start and is playing well, it wouldn't surprise me at all if that has a direct impact on recruiting.
J (Los Angeles)
Do you see College Gameday making an appearance at a USC game this year? If so, which one(s)? CGD has made it to at least one USC game every year since 2003.
Garry Paskwietz (5:39 PM)
I think either the Stanford game or UCLA would be the best two candidates. Both of those games could end up being for high-stakes.
Amir (Sherman Oaks)
Garry, who are the GAs for this team and for what positions? I hope we have one for the secondary and mostly on defense.
Garry Paskwietz (5:41 PM)
There are four GA's total and two work in the secondary - Kyle Williams and Jon Farmerie. Former SC player Ross Cumming is working with the OLB's and Jornon Fairman works with special teams.
Hey Gary why is Josh Shaw is still at Safety and not CB in summer drills?? U would think with the Depth and talent we have at S it would be vital that hed be prepared to play corner this season. Any thoughts??
Garry Paskwietz (5:43 PM)
I'm surprised he is still there because I could understand the reason for moving him. I'm not sure why the coaches elected to keep him at safety for now but I would like to think it was because he was simply the best option at SS based on what they saw in spring. Josh was really good in spring, the best DB out there in my opinion, so by leaving him at SS with Bailey at FS, the Trojans should be really solid in the back end. Now it's just a matter of finding dependable options at corner from other players.
When the NCAA gets trounced in the McNair lawsuit, will there be any benefit to USC, or just 'I told you so"?
Garry Paskwietz (5:45 PM)
it depends what is contained in those e-mails. At the very least there is the strong possibility that there will be some redemption for USC in the court of public opinion. Will there be any real relief in terms of the current sanctions? It all depends on what is revealed, if the e-mails get revealed at all.
What's an interesting detail or two that you've noticed from the throwing sessions that you haven't really been able to work into your coverage?
Garry Paskwietz (5:47 PM)
We talked in the video today about Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick, he's a guy who just continues to show up and I think he's ready for more action this year. I also continue to like what I see from Lamar Dawson, he's noticeably bulked up too. It's nice to be reminded about Gerald Bowman, he's been out of sight out of mind for a while but he's making plays now that he is out there.
MARI IL [via mobile]
What are the potential trap games in your opinion
Garry Paskwietz (5:49 PM)
It's hard to call Oregon State a trap game with the recent USC history of tough losses in Corvallis but it's a Friday night game the day after Halloween, that adds up to a classic trap game scenario.
Ed (Queens Village)
Will USC start year rank in preseason polls after a nightmare 12?
Garry Paskwietz (5:50 PM)
I've seen them ranked anywhere from #6 to #25. I think the majority of pre-season rankings will end up being closer to 25 than 6 when all is said and done.
If we have a top receiving corp and a top 5 defensive line according to Steele, then how are we not gonna be a too ten team next year!! I think we will honestly be great!!
Garry Paskwietz (5:52 PM)
Those rankings are an accurate reflection of the talent that is on the team right now. Front-line talent is not going to be SC's problem this year, the depth issues with the reduced roster will also be something to watch. I think the Lane Kiffin factor is also in play since last year was such a fall from pre-season rankings, people may think SC has talent this year but there is skepticism on what Kiffin will do with it.
Hey Gary I believe with Kessler at QB we will see a significant difference in turnovers this year compared to last season when MB7 would force passes to WRs or overthrow passes to the RW2.. And also a running game that should move the chains on 3rd and Short. Do u agree??
Garry Paskwietz (5:54 PM)
I thought one of the best things Cody did this spring to give himself a shot at the starting job was to go five straight scrimmages without an interception. You can be sure the coaches noticed too. If the turnovers can be limited, and if the run game can be there WHEN NEEDED, that would be a big step in the right direction for the offense.
Gary,It seems we have a lot more sensitive kids these days.. If you do not show them the "love" early and often they will not go to your camp or decommit.. I remember years ago that when Ed Odergon would see a recruit and he would ask about the depth chart he would tell them USC is not for you.. Wow have times changed..
Garry Paskwietz (5:57 PM)
That has definitely been a trend in recruiting. A lot of kids are upset with certain schools because they haven't been offered yet but it's only June prior to their senior year. There was a time that most offers weren't extended until after a player played in his senior year so the coaches could fully evaluate him but not anymore. You also see that trend with the handful of recent offers to 7th and 8th graders.
Who's been the most impressive non-starter at the throwing sessions?
Garry Paskwietz (5:58 PM)
I mentioned him earlier in the chat but I'm going to go with Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick again. He's gotten a lot of reps in these sessions with Grimble and Telfer coming back slowly from injuries and Jalen is showing himself well.
Bob (Los Angeles)
Dawkins is a SUPER Athlete , do you think hehas interest in USC if offered ?
Garry Paskwietz (5:59 PM)
Yes, I think there would be interest there if the Trojans offered.
Garry Paskwietz (6:00 PM)
Thanks everyone for coming, that's all the time we have for today. Sorry if we didn't get to your question. See you all next week.
