Mike Wilbon (1:30 PM)
Hey Everybody...DAMN, there's a lot going on for this time of year, usually Dog Days before we get to NFL training camps, which excited a great many of you but bore me to tears traditionally. Anyway, nothing boring about today, including Serena Williams losing at Wimbledon...and the continued recruitment of Dwight Howard out in Los Angeles...Here we go...

WILBON TRYIN TO GET SOME MORE INCITE ON AARON HERNANdez WHAT DO U REALLY THINK HWVENT HEARD UR OPPINION YET?
Mike Wilbon (1:38 PM)
Dude, what opinion is there to have other than to shake your head and say "Oh my God!" It's heinous, if true...It's sad...unthinkably sad...All of it...including the fact that Aaron Hernandez jerseys are selling on line for big money, reportedly. Also, the NFL and guns seems to be a disturbing story that's probably underreported. If this had happened in the NBA people would be screaming bloody murder, complete with every sterotype and all the profiling imaginable...But my opinion is that its sad, awful...What the hell else would anybody say? if there an alternate opinion?
Honestly, why would ANY team want Dwight Howard? Coming off injuries, a legit coach-killer, a terrible teammate? It's been at least three years since he was relevant on the court. What am I missing?
Mike Wilbon (1:43 PM)
Well, I wouldn't go that far personally. Remember, even last season when Dwight was, well, mediocre at best in my opinion, at least in terms of impact, he still averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds...How many other Big Men averaged that in the NBA last season? I wouldn't attempt to build THE LAKERS around Dwight...I just don't think his emotional makeup is the right fit for the pressure of leading the Lakers. Houston is SUCH a better fit for Dwight, in my opinion...He'd be surrounded by good players right from the start: Harden, Parsons, etc...Do I think Dwight is the kind of player who can carry a team to a championship or even the Finals (again)? No, I don't. But can he be a vital part? Yeah, I think he can...w the right cast around him.
What are your thoughts on the Wizards Draft? I feel like porter is a perfect fit and I loved taking a shot at Rice Jr. In the second round. If healthy could they sneak into the 5th or 6th seed in east?
Mike Wilbon (1:50 PM)
Loved it, loved it, loved it, loved it...thought the Wizards had a Grade A night of it...If I'm a Wizards fan I LOVE sticking Porter into that small forward slot and having a lineup of Wall and Beal, Nene and Okafor...They should get something for Ariza in a trade because it seems like he's not a guy who really wants to be a backup, though he'd be a nice sixth or seventh man...Anyway, Rice in the second round is a nice pick too, I think...He'll probably hit more shots in a week than the kid Vesely who is one giant waste of time...Anyway, yeah, I think the Wizards (presuming relative health) should be a playoff team...yeah, sixth of seventh...
Mike, with everything that I have read, I am really happy about the Bulls draft pick Tony Snell, seems like the Bulls have had their eyes on him for awhile and for good reason. I know he is still just a late first round pick and you can only expect so much but I think the Bulls can bring out the best in him and having his prior coach say he will reach is his ceiling no matter what because of his work ethic is a great sign too!
Can you please stop calling Magic "Earvin" every chance you get? That's incredibly obnoxious.
Mike Wilbon (1:55 PM)
It's hard to see him having major minutes this season, unless the Bulls are rocked (again) with injuries...But I like that the kid is a scorer, somebody who can shoot it from 3, and really stroke it from inside the arc...The Bulls, obviously, need shooters...It's just that this kid is probably going to be in his third season before he can really help the team. I see him in kind of the mold of Jimmy Butler, who did help in his SECOND season (mostly because of all the injuries) in that he's long and versatile and should really be able to play off D. Rose. I like the pick...but I might have liked Reggie Bullock who is also 6-7 or 6-8...I like kid Crabbe, who is 6-5, 6-6 wing shooter...I like the kid from Florida that the Bulls got in the second round, a stretch-4 who led the SEC in three-point shooting at 45.3 percent...Erik Murphy...They're not going to come in a set the league afire but they could help down the line...
Mike Wilbon (1:58 PM)
To the person who said it's incredibly obnoxious for me to call Earvin Johnson "Earvin" it's incredibly obnoxious for you to tell a guy who's known a man personally for 35 years what to call him...how stupid is for you to presume what he wants to be called. I sit with him every night for years watching basketball, having dinner, telling stories...And YOU THINK I'M GOING TO GIVE A DAMN THAT YOU DON'T LIKE IT! Seriously? He introduces himself as "Earvin" as often as not...Ballplayers, which I am NOT, don't call him Magic or Earvin; they call him "Buck." Seriously, if this is all you have stuck in your craw your life must be pretty great or you must be one salty Dude who needs to get a life. Have a good day!
Deven (New York, NY)
Do you really think Andrew Wiggins will be the best prospect since Lebron James?
Mike Wilbon (2:00 PM)
Are we already looking for "the next LeBron" like we spent 20 years looking for "the next Michael jordan."
Eric (Chicago) [via mobile]
Wilbon, the Blackhawks are Stanley Cup champs. Thoughts on Game 6?
Mike Wilbon (2:07 PM)
Forgive me if you already heard me tell this story on Waddle and Silvy, but I had to fly to Chicago that evening from D.C. and was 2 hours delayed by weather. The Pilot kept us updated during the flight and I knew it was 2-1 Bruins with 7 1/2 mins left...The flight landed with 4:05 left, we taxied, and when I walked off the aircraft with 1:20 left I heard this huge roar in O'Hare...my seat mate and I dashed from H8 to H14 where people surrounded the TV at a bar and watched the second goal (another roar) with 58 seconds left and the rest of it...It was almost more dramatic to watch it that way...It was as bizzare, in its own way, as Game 6 of the NBA Finals was in its way...And let me note for rabid Chicagoans that the Bulls won all 5 of their 6 championships in Game 6 and the Blackhawks have now won two titles in four seasons, both in Game 6 and both on the road. Strange. I was thrilled NOT to have to use my Game 7 tickets!!!
Mike Wilbon (2:10 PM)
(more on Blackhawks)...the downer in the NHL is how championship teams have to get rid of players critical to winning. Already yesterday the Blackhawks traded Dave Bolland, the guy who scored the Cup-winning goal, and Michael Frolik, who instrumental the whole playoffs...maybe their best power play guy...But, the Blackhawks had to do this in 2010 when they dumped several key players...but managed to recover and get back to the Finals...
Alex (New York)
Michael, please explain the rationale (if any) behind the Knicks making this trade and giving up a first round pick! for a soft Bargnagni who plays no defense.
Mike Wilbon (2:15 PM)
It's a middling shooter going to a overhyped team, right? I wonder if the acquisition of Bargnagni and the drafting of Hardaway Jr. signals "Goodbye" to J.R. Smith? Maybe the Knicks just needed some attention with the Nets getting it all the last week in metropolitan New York.
Wilbon, now withe Hawks win, 2 in 4 years, which Chicago team do u wanna see win next?? and yes i'm including the Cubs
Mike Wilbon (2:18 PM)
The Cubs...Are you kidding? I've SEEN the Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks and White Sox win in my lifetime...I've seen Northwestern play in the Rose Bowl. I've seen all the teams in Chicago do some amazing things...EXCEPT THE CUBS...Now, I think the Bulls could be in the best position to be the NEXT Chicago team to win...other than the Blackhawks, of course.
Keith H (Seattle)
Do you foresee the NBA expanding in a few years after the TV deal gets done? (We're just tired of being played in the 206 and don't want to hijack a team.)
Mike Wilbon (2:19 PM)
Seattle and where, if they do?
Enjoying the Doc - Simmons situation ?
Mike Wilbon (2:22 PM)
I knew this would come up? No, I didn't enjoy it, AND most importantly they've talked it through and that's over and done...Hey, these things happen now and then in any industry. I've been involved in a few scrapes in my time doing this so I understand. I work with Bill and have very much enjoyed my time with him on NBA Countdown and Doc is a personal friend, someone I've known for a long, long time, somebody I like tremendously even if he's a White Sox guy and I'm a Cubs guy...LOL
Mike Wilbon (2:23 PM)
Okay, I gotta run and prepare for PTI...Thanks for chatting everybody...This will be our last session for awhile. I'm going to take some time off here and there, some of it on Mondays...so we'll take a break until football, NFL and colleges, start up again in late, late August. Thanks so much...Have a great summer Everybody! MW
