Chat with Michael Collins
Welcome to Sportsnation! On Friday, ESPN.com golf writer Michael Collins brings his unique perspective as a former caddie into the chat.
Collins, who joined ESPN in August 2011, started his career as a stand up comedian and became a caddy by accident. He started looping for fun in 1999, but by 2003 decided to make it a full-time gig. He was the caddy for Chris Couch in 2003 when he won the Nationwide Tour championship.
Collins has never won an award for his writing, but he'll tell you that's probably because he failed high school English and still types with only his index fingers. But he's smart, funny and, most importantly, knows the game and what players and caddies go through on a weekly basis.
Send your questions now and join Collins Friday at 3 p.m. ET!
Michael Collins (3:17 PM)
Went to the wrong room!! HAHA
Michael Collins (3:17 PM)
Hey everyone... Had a little confusion before but we're straight now. Jumping right in to it.
Worrisome (Planet Earth)
I can only hope Tiger finishes up T5 after Round 2 and doesn't hurt himself further, even if claiming fully healed (can't be). Who knows w/Phil and Rory?
Did you ever loop in the Open - which venue and what are the biggest differences vs a US Open venue
Michael Collins (3:21 PM)
Never. Differences are the speed of the greens and the weather. US Open greens are lightning and we don't play if it's raining sideways. Open Championship greens are much slower and they play no matter what except for lightning which is rare in the UK.
Michael, Where is Dwight Howard going?!?
Michael Collins (3:22 PM)
Houston or Golden State
Tom (Verona, WI)
Good afternoon, MC! Any chance for Kevin Streelman to make your Open top 25? You don't need to save a spot for Steve Stricker.
Michael Collins (3:26 PM)
I really struggle doing the top 25 for the Open Championship because it can be SO dependent on weather. That being said I'll tell you that once I get over there and see what the exact forecast looks like with the course, I'll make my list.
Addison (North Carolina)
Big Tommy Gainey fan here (no relation). What is his reputation among the other tour players. He doesnt fit the mold of the normal tour player, so does his game get respect?
Michael Collins (3:29 PM)
It did not at first. Guys thought he was a flash in the pan but the longer he stayed on tour and the scores he put up demanded respect, then the way he won last year... guys now love the way he has his own style and flair. And he's a good guy too.
gray keller (san francisco, ca )
Nick Faldo is being a regular (blank) about the I told you so's to Rory McIlroy. He goes on and on about it never talking about how so many top players do this. Do you think Rory made a mistake?
Michael Collins (3:33 PM)
Gray, I gotta be honest. When Rory made the switch I did a video that said one thing... changing clubs is one thing but changing the golf ball (company) is where disaster will happen. Had a Titleist rep come up to me and say I was the only one who got it right on the danger...
Michael Collins (3:34 PM)
I don't play the "I told you so" game but Tiger and Phil. What other top golfers have changed golf ball companies and won a major?
Tom (Verona, WI)
Love your Sean Payton video today, especially the guy in the background using a metal detector to search for beach treasure. Ryan Palmer is on the cut line at -1. I hope Sean Payton is enjoying his vacation--it looks like it's not over.
Michael Collins (3:36 PM)
Thanks Tom. Lucky enough to be able to combine work and play this weekend. Coach Payton LOVES golf and last year when he had the year off, he was trying to play in every pro-am out there. He's a good guy and definitely an addict!
Any old guys to watch at the Open? Could Ernie be in the thick of it again?
Michael Collins (3:37 PM)
The way that Tom Watson has been playing he may just have another run in his old bones. How crazy would that be?!
Michael, I must say, I was thoroughly disappointed in that Europe didn't appear on the 'Comeback of the Year Award' at the ESPYs. And how about your infamous article for 'Moment of the Year' : P
Michael Collins (3:39 PM)
Well since I'm not in charge os the ESPY's... but as great as the Ryder Cup was, I'm very satisfied with my end of year wrap up.
Mike (Charlotte, NC)
Any word on JB Holmes returning from injury soon?
Michael Collins (3:42 PM)
Still haven't heard but the next person that asks him to go rollerblading should be kicked in the shin! J/K!
who do u think wins at the open championship
Michael Collins (3:44 PM)
No clue right now. Ask me the Wednesday night before the Championship starts! ;)
Would Muirfield be the place to get my hopes up on Sergio? Won the British Amateur and has a Top 5 at the last Open there...
Dick Patrick (Mesa, AZ)
I think it will be a good year for Faldo to make his comeback.
Phil (Chelsea, MI)
If Rose or Scott win another major this year are they POY?
Michael Collins (3:45 PM)
Absolutely. Anyone who wins two majors in one year should be POY even if they don't win the money title
Tom (Verona, WI)
When are you heading to Scotland? What's the over/under on number of pints you'll have with James Nursery, the Daily Mirror sports journalist who played Merion with you?
Michael Collins (3:46 PM)
I'll be there Monday morning the 15th and I'm taking my clubs with me so he can have a "rematch". I'd say the line for pints over/under should be set around 10 for the week.
Jim (NW Wisco)
A LPGA gal from the US recently tweeted that she 3 putted on the last hole to miss the cut. She went on to say "but look I got my nails done!" and had a pic of her nails. I'm sorry...what is wrong with these gals? Don't think you'd see an Asian player doing this!
Michael Collins (3:51 PM)
I think I have seen some of the Asian players do that and stereo typing like that is an ugly thing. There are many reasons the Asian women have gotten to the top of the women's golf world. But the US women doing the same thing their Asian counterparts do after missing a cut has nothing to do with it.
Cmon MC youre gonna post my question and not answer? Im desperate here!
Michael Collins (3:55 PM)
My bad!! Sergio may get into contention but when it comes down to it on Sunday, he does not believe he can win. Unless he finishes early and watches guy fall apart, like Ogilvy at Winged Foot, Sergio will not win.
gray keller (san francisco, ca)
What do you think about Joel Kribel being on the Canadian Tour this year? Do you see him doing great things there?
Michael Collins (3:58 PM)
1 start, 1 MC. He's been through so much as far as back injury goes. It'd be awesome to see him stay healthy and come close to the game he had in college.
Just saw an odyssey putter commercial with Ernie Els using a short putter. Have you heard about anyone switching back to short early?
Michael Collins (3:59 PM)
Bill Haas, and he just won with the short putter.
Addison Gainey (North Carolina)
Big Tommy Gainey fan here (no relation). Love seeing "two gloves" doing his thing, going low. Any chance he is at the top Sunday afternoon?
Michael Collins (4:01 PM)
yeah there's a good chance but hanging on for 4 rounds is tough.
Jim (NW Wisco)
My point was that the Asian LPGA players seem to focus on getting better. Not how they did fishing or how their nails look.
Michael Collins (4:03 PM)
And who was number 1 in the world right before Inbee? American Stacy Lewis. Seems like the issue you have with who's at the top of a leaderboard is a YOU problem.
Michael Collins (4:05 PM)
Well even with the "glitch" it's been a fun hour. Monday we'll have LOTS to talk about!Have a great and safe holiday weekend!MC
