AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Good morning, gang! We've got sixty minutes of fantasy chattage up ahead, so let's get right to it, shall we? Second cup of coffee in hand - who is up first?
Any word on Carlos Gonzalez? Is he going on the DL? I just had Molina hit the DL and if Cargo heads there also, it'll be a real tough week for my team!
AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
What I have heard thus far is no DL, but of course, these kinds of things are always fluid. For now, the "day-to-day" tag seems to be where it is at.
Lew (Green Bay)
Should I keep Doug Martin or Calvin Johnson in my PPR league?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Not an easy question, really. Megatron is the top dog at WR by a huge margin. so it's really hard to NOT keep him. But if you're going to throw Martin back and end up with a RB15 as your top guy, that might hurt you more. Depends a lot on who else is being kept.
Double DL (KC)
I have Kemp and Pujols, but only one DL spot. Their loss creates problems at 1B and OF. Hold both or drop one and move on?
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
I'd assume Pujols is less likely to come back at this point. Since you can only stash one...
Should we be concerned about Domonic Brown's concussion? Will this affect his future potential to give similar production as the first half of the year?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
One should always be concerned about concussions. Period. There was always going to be some regression in Brown's power numbers - but it's not like he's not going to hit any HRs once he's back. Unfortunately, it's an individual case-by-case basis.
rolinboy (San Francisco, Ca)
I got 9 moves left, half the contenders have 15+. Should I add Jimmy Rollins and Zach Wheeler (the two were recently cut, but just clear waivers)
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
Certainly dependent on what you have now at SS to some extent, but I'm not all that high on Rollins, as a rule. With Wheeler, I don't think you get enough innings for this to be worth it, as the Mets are already at six starters to ease back his work load and may well move him to the pen.
Thoughts on Lamar Miller? In a keeper league, is he more exciting than a CJ2K or MJD?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
I don't think he's more exciting... just has fewer visible warts at this stage of the game. If I'm going to risk on one, given the known upside if healthy - it's MJD.
What are your thoughts on why Boston did not call up Xander Bogaerts after they dealt Iglesias? What would you expect ROS from Bogaerts once he gets the call up?
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
They need a 3B, and Bogaerts is a SS. It comes down to whether or not they want to move him at this stage of his development or not. Once they figure that out, if yes - he comes up. If no, Middlebrooks probably gets a second chance. And there's always still a chance they move to deal for Young...
If Le'veon Bell wins the Steelers Starting RB job, will he be a 3 down back and have a big fantasy impact?
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
I think it's pretty good odds he does in fact win the job, and if so, he could definitely be in the mix for a top 20 RB finish. It will all come down to TDs for him, and how much they do decide to use him inside the five.
Still draft Tom brady even thought he has less options?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
He has different options... not less. And maybe lesser options, but not "awful" ones by any means. Brady is still a top 5 fantasy quarterback.
Nick (The 203)
Grandy comes back Friday and I just got him in a trade, should I be excited?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
The term, to me, is "cautiously optimistic."
Brian (San Jose)
Replacement option for Yadier Molina... waiver wire is pretty thin. Russell Martin, Saltalamacchia, Arencibia, or Doumit. Who's your pick?
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
Salty is probably in best situation in terms of playing time, lineup spot and overall team offense.
Hello AJ, Who is a better Dynasty League keeper Bernard Pierce or Vic Ballard?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
Pierce is really valuable more as a cuff than anything else. I think, especially if you're not a Bradshaw believer, then Ballard's the better performer for this year... and in terms of a dynasty league, I rarely look further than this year.
always keep a RB over WR? I can keep either J Charles, Ridley, or Megatron. Is the gap between Tron and all other WR that pronounced or is it better to keep an RB, and try to pick up Tron with my next pick?
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
Not "always" - but in terms of having a top-10 RB versus not? I think you have to go RB.
I'm looking to make some changes to my football league specifically bonus points for achieving weekly milestones. Do you play in any leagues like that? Any suggestions?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
I am fine with small bonuses for milestones, but remember that they are arbitrary - so they have to be small. One extra point for 300 passing yards is fine - but 10? Probably too much. After all you don't want 300 to be worth THAT much more than 299.
Think Pujlos will ever return to 40+ homeruns and 110 rbis and a 300 avg?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
No. I think we're seeing the slow slide towards retirement. He could certainly have a 2014 bounce-back if healthy and go 30-90-.300, but not counting on it.
Would you draft Jimmy Graham at the 15th overall pick in a 12 team PPR?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
Probably too high... more of a late-2, early-3 for me.
I've got no. 2 in a PPR. Insane to think Charles?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
No. Certainly after AP, you can go with any of the next few names and end up just fine. More of a gut call, no?
Are you buying the Vernon Davis running at WR hype? What kind of year do you expect out oh him?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
I buy it to the extent that I do believe we'll see him used in that role from time to time. I don't necessarily think it's a case of "instead of TE" by any means... but especially with the NE and BAL TE situations, he's way up on the draft board.
Is it time to drop Gyorko for someone like Vilar?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
What is he like 5-for-his-last-50? I mean, all players have ebbs and flows, but at some point, it does pay to switch horses.
Feeling Abandoned (Roto player)
AJ, I have to admit feeling frustrated every year at this time - and yes, I understand you answer the questions asked in these chats, but for us Fantasy Baseball guys, we get all the advice up to the stretch run and then the chats evaporate, the radio shows move to football, and just when we need advice to make that final push for the flag....nothing! Thanks for letting me share!
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
Understood abandoned... look at it this way: most teams are out of it in fantasy baseball, so of course they turn to football. But even if I don't get to a ton of baseball Q's here (due to volume) I am on twitter and try to help out there, as do many of my colleagues.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
With Percy out for awhile, would you draft Golden Tate ahead of other sleepers, like Dobson, Gordon, Michael Floyd and Vincent Brown?
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
Draft boards are definitely a balance of "skills" and "opportunity" - and yes, Harvin's injury does boost Tate in the latter... but for me, when reaching, I'm more apt to go with the skill and HOPE opportunity comes.
Everyone keeps 2 in given round: Demaryus in 12th, Gronk in 11th, or Dez in 3rd
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
I think I would let Dez go, given the value of the other two - especially in the case of Thomas, who is not that much of a drop (if at all) from Bryant.
OK to cut Graham for a RB in a keeper league if you can only keep one? Who is the worst RB you'd keep over Graham?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
Certainly it is OK. But it's a piece of the jigsaw. If you know everyone else is keeping a RB in the top ten and the guy you're considering is the only other top 10, I'd keep the RB. If others are keeping a QB and an WR, and you have a draft pick that allows you to claim a remaining RB, then I keep Graham. It's not a cut and dry answer.
You dropping Cabrera and Peralta yet or waiting for 100% confirmation of suspension?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
I think you hold on to both for as long as they continue to play, but as we all are pretty sure that shoe will drop, any question marks on the bench have to be filled by potential replacements. But no use cutting them now only to find out there's an appeal and you end up missing out...
seems like Panda has been putting it together (although no HR). Is it safe to roll with him everyday now? Heel injury seems to be minor
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
Minor, but likely nagging. I can easily see two days off a week, but if you have daily transactions, it shouldn't be an issue... Bottom line is that if he's healthy enough to start, you should have him in there and you hope for the best in terms of 4-5 ABs.
Can you pick 2 of these waiver wire quality one-baggers: Brandon moss, chris carter, justin smoak, logan morrison
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
I would lean to LoMo and Carter.
ROS: Bud Norris, Wade Miley & Jacob Tuner (pick 2)?
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Not sold on Bud in new uni, but I think at this point, I trust him more than Miley.
AJ, would you rather have Votto, Pujlos or Fielder for next year?
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Way early, but Votto.
Are you also of the RB, RB camp? I feel too many people in mocks are going that way and drafting Chris Johnson and the like over quality WR's like Marshall, Demaryius, Julio. Shonne Greene was not much different than Johnson if you look at the stats. I think the teams that draft their 2nd RB later and hit on him will win most leagues.
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
You're not wrong, but what are the chances you WILL hit? I just believe that there's plenty of depth at WR that allows you to draft three of them in the 30-40 range and still be far more competitive overall than if you grab one better WR and get stuck with lottery tickets at RB.
Doug Butabi (Roxbury)
Did you take part in Mock Draft Monday? What advice would you give based on those mocks?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
I did not, Doug, as I was on vacation. However, I think from the ESPN.com Fantasy Staff mocks I've done thus far, I think that either you go RB-RB in first two rounds or try to get Rodgers/Megatron/Graham trifecta in first 3.
AJ, picking up a player on for a DL stash... Maybin or Niese?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
I'd go with the hitter over the pitcher, in general. And especially with the Mets not being an organization that pushes pitchers to return.
AJ - you recently compared the HR to the SB in your latest Hit Parade. Would you apply the same logic to positions? For example, if an SS and 1B are producing the same stats, then how much greater weight would you apply to the stats from the SS given the depth at that position?
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Fair question. As a rule, I would not, because we don't play (at least I've never seen a league) where we go head-to-head at each position. As long as the stats all go into the same basket to get added up, I don't care where they come from when valuating in-season. (Obviously, it's a bit different when prepping for a draft.)
Do you see a great advantage obtained by participating in Mock Drafts? Wonder if worth the time and what I would gain by doing so.
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
I do. Most of us live in a vacuum, where we only see the value of players in our own terms... By taking part in several mocks, you can begin to see certain players who are tending to be valued by others in a vastly different way... Knowing that can be key to draft day steals...
Is it safe to drop Putz now? Or should I keep holding onto his non-saving self?
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
It's all about ratio help in making that decision. I don't think he's pitched poorly enough to force a cut if he can still be in your "rotation" on days when your SP don't have to be in there. Every little counting stat can help...
ROY: Junior Lake or Christian Yelich?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Gut call to me says Lake.
Aaron (West Town)
If Everth gets suspended should I replace him with Franklin or Villar? I'm leaning Villar to get back that speed.
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Take a good look at how much you need those steals. Overall I do like Franklin better, but obviously, at this stage of the game, if SB can get you more standings points, you can trade away far better players to get those SB.
With a new offense in CHI, what kind of stats are you expecting out of Forte?
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
I think he's in the 10-12 range at RB.
Hi AJ. How would you rank the rookie RBs in a deep keeper league? Any of them favorites of yours for 2014 and beyond? Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Personally, I like Le'Veon the most. For beyond, youth is served so by 2015, I think many of the fresher legs will be climbing up the rankings.
In keeper leagues (mixed), what is your view on keeping SPs? Seems easier to get mid-tier arms than bats...are guys like Verlander and Gio still keeper worthy? assume you can keep 8.
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
As a rule, it's hitter over pitcher when the values are somewhat relative. However, any top 25 SP for the upcoming season, once all the off-season moves are done, can be in the discussion for keeping in a league with that many.
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Folks, that's my time for today. Sorry I could not get to them all, but as I said, I will check in on Twitter (@ajmass) later today to answer as many as I can. Until the next time, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
