ESPNChicago (2:00 PM)
Welcome to the Cubs chat. Jesse Rogers will be along shortly from Wrigley Field before the Cubs take on the Dodgers. Keep the questions coming.
ESPNChicago (2:15 PM)
Sorry folks... Jesse's having some technical issues out at Wrigley. We're going to get those cleared up and start the chat at 1:30pm CT.
ESPNChicago (2:16 PM)
Keep the questions coming and he'll dig through them when he gets on. Sorry for the delay.
Jesse Rogers (2:30 PM)
Ok, sorry for the delay. Techinical difficulties and was talking with Sandy Koufax. One of the greats of all time. That interview will be posted in the Cubs blog shortly...Cubs and Dodgers taking BP, Gm 2 of the series coming up at 305. Deadline over..lets talk some baseball...fire away!
Should we expect to see Olt cracking the Cubs lineup sometime this year? Anyone else we should see come the September Call Ups?
Jesse Rogers (2:31 PM)
Depends on Aug. Whoever earns it over this month will get the call-up. Olt should but he's off to such a slow start at AAA, there is no guarantee...maybe jackson and vitters if healthy and playing well..there is no set formula..this month will determine who gets called up. I still think Olt will be here but he has to improve
Austin (Springfield) [via mobile]
What's the level of concern for olt's poor year so far?
Jesse Rogers (2:33 PM)
Well, lets put it this way, last yr the Rangers dont deal Olt for Garza..this yr they did..now there are other circumstances of course but I think coming off a concussion in winter ball and some eye issues..there is SOME concern...I cant tell you waht Jed/Theo are thinking though they did just trade for him....so cant be too concerned
Tommy (Mchenry) [via mobile]
Are they wearing out Russell like they did camp? And any chance shark is shut down before seasons end?
Jesse Rogers (2:33 PM)
Im a big believer that appearances can mess with a guy in the coming years so yes on Russell...No on Samardzija..really wants to pitch the full season
Do you think Junior Lake can be the next star outfielder for the Cubs next year?
Jesse Rogers (2:35 PM)
Totally remains to be seen...he's been impressive but there are holes in his swing..anyone can see that...but that doesnt meant he cant get better...he did in the minors..so my answer is yes but thats just because of his raw talent..we'll see if he advances
Is Castro getting to say 270 and Rizzo hitting 25-30 HR and 90 RBIs a good goal to have by the end of the year? Would that be considered a second half success?
Jesse Rogers (2:35 PM)
Def say yes on both of those
who hits more RBI's in a Cubs uniform; Baez, Bryant, or Almora?
Jesse Rogers (2:36 PM)
You guys are killing me..where's my crystal ball...Soler.....
When can we realistically expect the Cubs to start challenging for World Series titles? Honestly, that's why this new leadership was brought in right?
Jesse Rogers (2:37 PM)
2015..cant be sooner and prob more like 2016 for WS..Ive said alll along it will turn fast when it doesn..in other words from 90 losses to 90 wins..etc
What is the future of Dan Vogelbach? He's been killing it at Kane County and shows a lot of potential. Is there a place for him on the cubs roster?
Jesse Rogers (2:39 PM)
Getting this question alot. He was named minor league player of the month within the organization in July...If Rizzo is the real deal, then he's trade bait..or else Rizzo is...doubt they'll make him transition to outfield but then again if he can rake they'll find a spot...but if you can flip him for pitching, they will...Class A player though..so let things play out
People had been calling for Castro to get a day off long before Sveum finally sat him. Since that off day, Castro is hitting .292 and has committed just 1 error. Does this make Sveum look good for leveraging the off day or bad for not doing it sooner?
Jesse Rogers (2:40 PM)
In my opinion, 100 percent bad. I think its been a big mistake..there is nothing to prove playing 162 unless you're capable and ready for it..I dont think there is any doubt he needs a breather every so often...no harm in that AT ALL...
bertha (chapel hill, nc)
who will be the Cubs opening day 8 starting position players in 2014?
Jesse Rogers (2:42 PM)
Alright, Ill bite...Lake, DeJesus, Schierholtz in the outfield....Ill go Olt, Castro, L. Watkins ??, Rizzo, Castillo....Couple of guesses there just to throw something at the wall
butch (las vegas)
Any chance david price signs with the cubs? Seems like they the cubs front office is closer then they originally thought
Jesse Rogers (2:44 PM)
My educated guess is no...Reason is they signed Jackson last offseason as a pre-emtive move..someone durable and not too costly...if they wanted price they dont sign jackson in my opinion...I think they're a year -- at least -- away from signing an A+ FA...
How are the Cubs going to handle the situation at 2nd base? There are a couple promising young guys in minors that appear to be better offensively than Barney
Jesse Rogers (2:45 PM)
May the best man win...same as every position...8-9 times out of 10 it takes care of itself..otherwise guys get flipped, etc
Are the Cubs interested in signing Ted Lilly once he is released by the Dodgers? He is a great veteran to have in the clubhouse and hopefully he could help guys like Travis Wood.
Jesse Rogers (2:45 PM)
Not that Im aware
Patrick (Yorkville, IL)
Any chance the Cubs can sniff .500 next year?
Jesse Rogers (2:46 PM)
Probabaly not....too many rookeis will be breaking in late in yr etc. Too much still in flux.
Do Theo and Jed view Darwin Barney as part of the core? He's a great defender but he can't hit!
Jesse Rogers (2:47 PM)
I dont think so...he could outlast some if they dont take the next steps and the cubs end up with plenty of hitting around him but he's just not advancing...does battle at the plate but usually loses at the end...
Steve, lake villa [via mobile]
Why do you think almora has not been called up to AA with his consistent play this year at kane county? Do you see him getting a call up before years end?
Jesse Rogers (2:48 PM)
The injury set him back...Cubs want to be safe rather than sorry when it comes to these guys...I can assure when he's achieved the goals theyve laid out for him he'll move up...he'll be there next yr if not this month
Dan (Elgin) [via mobile]
Why haven't the Cubs considered Lake at third? He played 3B with Castro at SS when they were teammates for the Dominican team.
Jesse Rogers (2:50 PM)
And he played 3rd most of the time at AAA but then they traded and drafted a third baseman...he's big enoguh and athletic enough and not some whiz at third that it makes sense to move him to OF
Is there any indication that the Cubs will try and work on a long term deal with Wood after the season? Do you think he would be receptive to such a proposal (compared to Samardzija)?
Jesse Rogers (2:51 PM)
yes and yes
Who do you see as the 4th and 5th starters next year? Assume Samardzija, Wood, Jackson would be locks.
Jesse Rogers (2:52 PM)
Villanueva still around...I could see Rusin getting a chance now that he's looking better...Im sure they'll sign a back end guy or maybe Scott Baker finally makes it back and they re-sign him..
Do you see or have you heard of any Cubs that may be placed on waivers? I know there were a few teams interested in DeJesus and Schierholtz, maybe Gregg too, but since nobody has a huge contract (E-Jax does somewhat but don't think he'd go on waivers), is there any possibility that the Cubs get a trade done this month?
Jesse Rogers (2:54 PM)
Gregg will go on for sure...Im sure Schierholtz as well..they may not with DeJesus...they'll all go on ..think its 50/50 there will be a trade this month..not a cop out but realisitic
Do the cubs have any plans to play elsewhere during renovations?
Jesse Rogers (2:55 PM)
Would it be out of the question for Baez to get a call up this September?
Jesse Rogers (2:55 PM)
Yes, already been stated by management
I know it was just 1 start, but Rusin doesnt seem to have much of a future. Shouldnt the Cubs place Arietta in the rotation to get him experience. He looked good the other night
Jesse Rogers (2:56 PM)
Forgor about him...in due time Im sure he'll be back..Gotta give guys chances..Rusin has looked good as he did in spring training....was ok yesterday until tiring..but yeah, arrieta will be back..might end up being a reliever
I'm most interested in seeing how Rizzo and Castro play this August and September. I hope they play well, have fun, and get to the offseason with confidence. What are your thoughts on their development this year and into next?
Jesse Rogers (2:58 PM)
Like most Im down on Castro..Rizzo is still in his first yr and Im not too worried...Castro can be all over the place with his offense and defense...good and bad...which is fine but the good has to be more and the bad less, simple as that...I havent seen much development out of Castro..I do like he goes to right field but now hes doing it too much...lots of fly outs over there..we'll see what final 2 months bring
Jesse, great work in the first half. After a successful trade deadline, and a positive record in July, what stories are you following most closely in the second half, and the offseason? Thanks for the hard work, Go Cubbies!
Jesse Rogers (2:59 PM)
We just said a few..core guys like Samardzija and even Wood finishing strong along with Rizzo, Castro, Castillo..See how long Lake can keep things up...and then the sept call-ups like logan watkins if he comes..and Arrieta...plenty to watch
Any word on what was being offered for guys like Schierholtz or Gregg? If it wasn't much then I'm glad the Cubs didn't bite, but I'm curious.
Jesse Rogers (3:00 PM)
It def wansnt much..I thought both were goners..C type prospects from what I heard
With the Cubs signing of Jimenez official, how long would you think it will take for him to make his way to the big league club? I know it's at least 4 years, most likely, but I'd like to hear a more expert opinion.
Jesse Rogers (3:02 PM)
When you are big and strong like he is the trajectory can be faster...think Puig or Trout, etc. Youre able to do things with bad swings etc that others cant..that being said I cant predict the 20 year-old in the system, let alone the 16 year-olds...However, follow the money...the more they pay the more they pay attention...
Matt J (Chicago)
Do you think that this will be the summer that the Cubs will pursue a high priced free agent this summer like a Shin-shoo Choo, Ellsbury, or a Brian McCann, or will they wait another year to let prospects develop and grab a deadline trade piece who was hurt and will need to re-establish some value like Halladay?
Jesse Rogers (3:03 PM)
Wait another year
Jesse Rogers (3:05 PM)
