Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:01 AM)
Good morning everyone! Busy day, filled with #MockDraftMonday mocks, and with an early fantasy baseball lineup deadline. Let's get right to your questions!
Are d'Arnaud and Bogaerts a must add in 12 team h2h? Would you drop Napoli and/or Rizzo for them?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:05 AM)
I think Xander Bogaerts is, a point I made on today's Fantasy Focus podcast, but I'm not so sold on Travis d'Arnaud being one. d'Arnaud, after all, is up because John Buck went on bereavement, so there's a very real possibility that he'll return shortly to the minors. I do think he might be up as the Mets' starter in September, though. If you've got the luxury of bench space, perhaps worth it. Otherwise, no.As for Bogaerts, the most compelling point to make is that he's shortstop-eligible. I think he's a polished batsman, and the Red Sox wouldn't recall him to sit him down.
Rotisserie using OBP should I start Arod, Johnson or Arenado at 3B.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:07 AM)
I still say ride the A-Rod streak. I'm OK with any of these three in general, but I give him a slight edge here with the OBP wrinkle.
You obviously haven't followed the d'Arnaud news. He's the primary catcher from here on.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:09 AM)
Apologies, you are correct. With juggling the two, I didn't notice that announcement; recall that before that it was a temporary thing. Bummer, wish I had brought that up on the podcast!"Cold water" move (if one needed; still prefer Bogaerts): Catchers usually take more time to adjust at this level, and in d'Arnaud's case, he has a troubling injury history. Tread carefully, but add, sure.
Start Jose Fernandez this week and then cut to bring players (Cobb/Betancourt) off of my DL?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:11 AM)
Let's wait and see when the Marlins make the announcement to shut him down. The worry: The Nationals just shut down Taylor Jordan without any heads up in advance, and that can happen with Fernandez, too. But I'll be clear: I'd wait until it happens. He's way too good to lose for any of his remaining starts.
What are your thoughts on CC? I'm in a 12-team keep-12 league and can't drop him, but I can't play him, either. Owners are very hard to trade with and I won't be able to get any value for him. Do you expect him to rebound next year? Should I just dump him, now? For the year, only Niese, Anderson and Ike Davis have been worse, on my team, and all of them have spent time out.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:12 AM)
CC came up on the podcast today, much more detail than I can possibly provide here. But I'll lean on the poor schedule once more. Yankees have a bad one for pitchers, so I'm not that optimistic.
Jake (Stone Mountain, GA)
B.Beachy or C.Tillman this week?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:13 AM)
I rank them in my weekly Forecaster. Check that out here.
Joe (Ann Arbor)
What line do you project for Xander Bogaerts 2014? Top 10 SS?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:16 AM)
He'll need the requisite games to qualify there, and I'm not positive that he'll get them. So let's assume for argument's sake that he's SS-eligible, yes, I think he'll be close to those ranks.I'm thinking .280-.290 batting average, gets in teens in power. Solid runs/RBI because of team. Not overwhelming, but solid, reliable.
2QB PPR League, 6pts for TD, +bonuses, Please Pick 2 and why from: Romo, RG3, Luck, Wilson & Kapernick. Thanks
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:19 AM)
I'd pick RGIII and Wilson. Awfully close between these guys. Can't really go wrong with any. Likely to have Luck ranked lowest though.
Romo or Mujica in a pts lg this week?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:20 AM)
We still don't know whether Edward Mujica is ready to go for the week, so I'd go Sergio Romo. Seven games for both, and the Cards play the Braves. No lock they can win/set up saves in all of those.
Based on your line - you're projecting Manny Machado - 2013 for Xander in 2014, no?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:21 AM)
I suppose, though I had Manny Machado as hitting for a lower average but for more home runs. And if I'm going to compare such types, I'm taking the power over batting average.
Haren still a 2 start?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:22 AM)
That's the last report I read, and it was from the Nationals' press notes.
How high should i draft Le'veon Bell for my flex/bench?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:24 AM)
At best sixth round. It's buying carries rather than overwhelming skills, so I'm OK with him in the flex spot/matchups options on bench range.
John (St. Louis)
Whats your opinion on Zac Stacy this year? Is he this years 'Alf'?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:26 AM)
I think that's an extremely fair comparison, because you have to remember that last year, around this time, Alfred Morris was a no-name, third-on-depth-chart player who really didn't emerge until the week entering Week 1.That said, I'd also like to have seen Stacy generating more buzz than he has -- as Morris was this time a year ago -- before I'd call it a perfect comp.Lottery ticket.
Karabell dropping Foster in his rankings. Are you?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:30 AM)
I am, because at this point we've seen the injury linger long enough to be of concern; it should threaten his regular-season status. That said, he's still in my first round. Not going to panic ... yet.
Ryan (San Diego)
Any reason to toss Samardzija out there today?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:32 AM)
Sure, in an NL-only or deep mixed. But be aware that the Nationals are considerably weaker against lefties than righties, so it's not like it's a standout matchup.
Who would you take at 2 if you're dropping Foster in your rankings?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:33 AM)
At this point, probably Marshawn Lynch. I think I'd rather have the six-spot and let others make the decision for me; I see there being minimal difference between guys like Lynch, Ray Rice, Jamaal Charles, Doug Martin and now Foster...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:34 AM)
And here's another thought: If you play in a league that's historically conservative with injuries, you could even land Foster with a pick at round's end.
In a dynasty league, what is the trade value of Oscar Taveras? Is the ankle injury, surgery and recovery anything that will diminish his long term value?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:36 AM)
It could, and the other concern here is that it could push back his timetable for 2014 debut, being that he'll be working himself back to full strength during spring training. I'd say he's a brilliant trade chip in a keeper league, if you need to spend one to get pieces you need now.
Sleeper TE's, give me 3
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:37 AM)
How about Jared Cook, Jordan Cameron and Zach Sudfeld?
Thots on Josh Hamilton's recent hot streak? Any chance he sustains it?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:39 AM)
It's a week and a half, not enough to hang your hat on. I haven't had a chance to check his swing-and-miss stats -- that was the crux of my preseason anti-Hamilton column -- but I'll take a look. I've generally ranked him generously all year, so I'm not shocked by this. Not moving him up much because of it.
Trout hamstring gonna be an issue?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:39 AM)
Completely unclear. I'd play him. He's way too talented to sit without word he'll miss significant time.
Any chance Wheeler pitches twice this week? Some sites have the Mets skipping a 5th starter on the off day.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:40 AM)
Yes there is a chance of that. It was mentioned in the Forecaster, but when I look at the Mets and two guys who they're watching innings with, Wheeler and Harvey, I think they throw Carlos Torres on Friday.
I keep hearing unflattering reviews on Jonathan Franklin so far. Would you rather have Roy Helu on your bench than Franklin?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:41 AM)
No, but Franklin is dropping in my rankings. DuJuan Harris has a legitimate shot at stealing the No. 2 RB job from him (not that I'm saying he has/will yet, just that it's up for discussion).
If Mujica can't go, Rosenthal for svs?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:43 AM)
I'd have to think so, though he has been worked just about as hard this year between the two. I still think Mujica might be fine -- plan that way -- but there's reason to avoid him if you're rich in saves (like the Romo team is).
THC - In my weekly league, I'm trying to decide between Minor @ STL and Shields vs. CWS. How concerned should I be about Minor after his short start? Thanks!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:46 AM)
Any concern is rooted more in the Braves going easier on their youngsters with such a big lead, plus the matchup itself, rather than Minor's performance in that game. For the record, I had Minor ranked higher before the outing. I'd stick with him, but I understand your concern.
Le'veon bell I believe is ranked in the top 50, possibly 42 in yahoo. So with a 6th round grade does that mean you would stay away from him?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:47 AM)
I'm not targeting him, I can tell you that.
If you have to drop one: Michael Bourn, Will Venable, or Leonys Martin?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:49 AM)
Wow, at this point, dropping Bourn is under discussion. I'll remind what I've said in multiple spots in the past week: The Indians' remaining schedule is awful for hitters, but this week's is great. So if you could push off the decision until after the week's conclusion -- or just beyond the week's lineup deadline -- I would.
Tristan, not sure if you have official rankings out, but is it crazy to take Jimmy G in the back end of the 2nd over the likes of Bmarsh, Fitz, Roddy (12 person, 0.5ppr)
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:51 AM)
I do not have official rankings out, but I made a point in a recent mock of ours -- I think it publishes in the next few days -- that Graham is worth a back-2nd pick in a 12-team or more PPR (or half-PPR). I'm going to take Marshall and probably Roddy over him too, but Graham > Fitzgerald for me.
Please answe!!!! Start miller in mil tonight??????
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:51 AM)
Sure, why not? No Carlos Gomez, so the Brewers' lineup is that much weaker...
Where did Tyson Ross come from, and what are your thoughts on him the rest of the year?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:53 AM)
From the A's, and I'm OK with him on a streaks/matchups basis. Like Stults/Locke before him, Ross has good enough ability to beat weaker offenses/exploit the favorable home ballpark. But that's as far as I'm going, as he's more a back-of-rotation type long-term.
In a league that the bulk of the points are TDs are worth 8 would you adjust your top 10 much?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:54 AM)
Jamaal Charles and C.J. Spiller would probably move down 2-3 spots apiece and Lynch, Morris and Steven Jackson would benefit.
Any updates on Zimmerman's injury? Should I grab a backup like Arod?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:59 AM)
I haven't seen any beyond that his leg was taped up on Sunday morning; doesn't necessarily sound like a one-day thing, but impossible for me to tell.I'd consider adding A-Rod as an insurance policy, yes. Yanks have the better schedule this week anyway.
Tommy (Mock Draft)
THC... My league went from 12 team to 14 team, any advice for "deeper leagues" what is more scarce?? RBs??? WRs??
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:00 PM)
Running backs. It's almost always running backs. Be prepared to take almost every RB beyond Round 2 at least five spots sooner than ADP, and even some of the guys in the 60-70 range go as late-4th/5th-rounders.
Who to pick in BAL in case Johnson loses the closer role. Thanks Happy!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:01 PM)
My pick is still Tommy Hunter.
Do you like Sonny Gray or Alex Wood more than Ross, then?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:02 PM)
That is correct. I'll almost always take the higher ceiling; plus let's not gloss over that Gray is in a favorable environment for a pitcher (ballpark-wise) himself.
Kershaw for Trumbo and kimbrel. Who wins?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:02 PM)
The team that gets Kershaw.
Jimmy Lipper (Tremont)
What kind of Keeper Ranking would you assign Xander Bogaerts going forward into future seasons? Thoughts? Thanks THC!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:03 PM)
I think Bogaerts probably belongs near where Machado used to be, and that's in about the 75th overall range for 2014. I could see him vaulting into the top 40 or so for 2015.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (12:03 PM)
Ok, time to wrap things up for today. Thanks for all your questions, and sorry if I couldn't get to yours. Take care everyone, and I hope to see you all again in a #MockDraftMonday mock this afternoon!
