Stephania Bell (3:03 PM)
Good afternoon! thanks for coming over to chat. College football starts tonight! NFL not far behind. Exciting times...
Dan (Lawrence, KS)
I can't recall many RB's who have returned to form after a Lisfranc injury. Do you have any concerns about MJD this season?
Stephania Bell (3:06 PM)
Dan: Don't know if you saw the piece I did which ran on NFL Live yesterday but I had the chance to visit with MJD, see him in the training room, working out...and playing in a game. All that, combined with talking with him and his PT/ATC, I am confident about his foot health. He strikes me as a highly motivated guy. Like his prospects for this season even more than I did before.
Stephania you believe we'll see D.Wright this season and if so when?
Stephania Bell (3:08 PM)
Alex: I believe if everything continues to go as it has thus far, he will return. As for when, it sounds like it could be within the next week to ten days IF rehab starts go well. Could always take longer if he has a setback or even if they don't think he's had enough opportunities to test it. The plan is rehab assignment to begin as DH, work back from there.
Stephania Bell (3:11 PM)
Mike: Hope you heard what I said on the podcast last week. Whether they called it a groin, a lower abdominal strain, etc, it all had the sounds of a core muscle injury (aka sports hernia) with the potential to get aggravated at any point along the way. Exhibit A: him leaving the game limping today. More to come.
Thoughts on Foster? Would you take him 2nd overall?
Stephania Bell (3:12 PM)
Dan: Yes, I'd take him there. Or Ray Rice. Might be a gametime call. Probably Foster. I just think he will be in the end zone...a lot. And all the top RBs are injury risks. Always.
Golf Grouch (LA)
Is MJD totally healthy now? Do you believe that he is truly "injury prone" as his ADP suggests?
Stephania Bell (3:13 PM)
Grouch: I know I've already talked MJD but I just had to respond to this. Before last year, he only missed 3, yes 3, games in a six year career. Hardly injury prone.
Thoughts on the Le'Veon Bell injury?
Stephania Bell (3:15 PM)
Mitch: Sounds like a stable, minor sprain. Still important to allow it to heal completely. But if it does, he'll return this year, potentially within 6-8 weeks.
Hey Stephania, we seem to be hearing a lot about staph infections over the past couple of seasons, so just wondering if you can maybe explain what exactly they are and why they it seems to be a pretty prevelant issue in football locker rooms in particular.
Stephania Bell (3:17 PM)
David: The type you're hearing about is MRSA - it's a form of staph resistant to traditional antibiotics. Always a risk where athletes come into close contact (football, wrestling). Earlier today I tweeted a link to an interview on espn.com with Dr. Matt Matava of St. Louis Rams. They dealt with this several years ago and he gives great answers to the types of questions you're asking.
Josh (Iowa City, Iowa)
Hi Stephania! Is Harvin's injury something that he could come back from and contribute right away or do you think its something that they would limit the number of snaps? Just wondering if he is worth keeping on my IR for the remainder of the season. Early estimates put his possible return at Week 13. Not a lot of fantasy value there unless he comes back at 100%. What do you think?
Stephania Bell (3:18 PM)
Josh: He will probably be eased back into action. Gradual increase in snaps. Week 13 is best case scenario. I would not be holding a spot for him.
Mark (San Jose, Ca.)
Steph, when will Cingrani take the mound for the Reds again?
Stephania Bell (3:19 PM)
Mark: Hard to say since he just got put on DL recently after struggling with bullpens. Would expect slightly longer than the DL time - a few weeks(?) depending how he recovers. He never thought it was serious so sounds like it's not a worst case scenario but you never know how an athlete will respond once they throw again.
It sounds like Cargo should be coming back soon. Is there much chance of a setback?
Stephania Bell (3:22 PM)
Brint: The fact that he's still experiencing some pain in his finger even though he can grip the bat better indicates it is not "gone." In other words, the possibility of a setback likely to exist through remainder of the season. He had been playing well between episodes of pain for a while. the hope is that the downtime makes the setbacks less likely and that he can be productive in between.
so far so good with Hakeem Nicks? i know you can never really "count" on him, but at least he's starting the season seemingly healthy ...
Stephania Bell (3:23 PM)
Ben: Good assessment: so far, so good. He's got great upside. Explosive playmaker when healthy but you may have to sacrifice a couple of weeks during the season.
Kyle K (Lincoln NE)
Brandon Marshall admitted his hip wasn't 100%. Right now I don't believe there is cause for concern, but if I am drafting him as a WR1 I want to know this kind of injury isn't a nagging one that could prevent him from playing 16 games.
Stephania Bell (3:26 PM)
Kyle: If he's not 100% now, there's no way to say he's in shape to play all 16 games. Of course, something else could happen (as with anyone) but while I think Marshall will tough out any soreness with the hip, the concern would be whether he'll compensate and cause injury somewhere else.
What are your thoughts on drafting either Crabtree or Harvin? Are they even draftable?
Stephania Bell (3:28 PM)
Ryan: I commented on Harvin. Feel similarly about Crabtree. May come back late in the season but will probably be eased in gradually. Not someone I'd draft.
Stephania, what's the latest on EJ Manual? Any chance he'll make the start of the season?
Stephania Bell (3:29 PM)
Michael: There is a chance. Coach says it's possible but what they need to see is how he moves around in practice when he returns. Think it's a stretch for him to make it but the door is open.
Ray (La Feria, TX)
Do you think that Eddie Lacy can stay healthy the whole year, even with his toe fusion and his previously broken hand? Whats the percentage he gets injured this year?
Stephania Bell (3:32 PM)
Ray: I think he CAN, have no idea if he WILL. I won't put percentages on these things. Too many uncontrolled variables. His toe has already held up to some pretty intense play at Alabama. Has shown he can play through pain. I think these things may catch up to him in terms of how long a career he can have but I'm not overly concerned heading into this season.
Hi, Stephania. You're all over Kenny Britt's injury last year; you feeling a little more positive about him this year in a contract season? Sounds like he's motivated and looking more explosive, although recent reports indicate that the knee is still an issue.
Stephania Bell (3:33 PM)
Darnell: It's nice to have hope. But after multiple years of significant injuries, need to see it to believe it. The early reports of swelling in his knee are not encouraging.
Took RG III in the 5th (#52) of my 12 team draft last night (Luck and Romo were also still available). Should I worry about having a good backup QB (I did draft Big Ben but he shares the same bye week)? Read different views on his return from an ACL. We only have a 5 man bench and there were several decent QBs left on the wire (Cutler, Bradford, Freeman, Tannehill). Thanks.
Stephania Bell (3:35 PM)
Phil: If it's a single QB league, I don't even roster a backup, especially if it's a late bye week. So many QBs you can pick up to fill in for a bye week and you want to see who's healthy at that point, who has emerged among the deeper QBs.
Starphania, love your work. Married to a Niners fan too! Whats the likelihood we see Parnell and/or Cueto as fantasyworthy the rest of this year? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:37 PM)
Chris: Thank you! And you have good taste in the spouse department too. I'm not convinced either is fantasy worthy. parnell may not return at all. Cueto, if he does do well enough to get back, is likely to come in as a reliever (according to my colleague Tim Kurkjian who was with the Reds earlier this week).
Positive reports out of GB for Jordy. Are you buying it?
Stephania Bell (3:40 PM)
Chip: Well, he's back in practice as of last Sunday, so that's encouraging. And Mike McCarthy was glowing about him, not sure how much I buy into that. He's still early in his recovery (on the field) so not sure he's truly in "football" shape by next week but the trend is positive.
Any negative report on Ludwick since return from DL? Rather own him or Ruf for ROS?
Stephania Bell (3:44 PM)
Heather: Normally pretty even. But Ludwick will continue to get regular rest following the DL stint. Probably go with RUF.
What's the tipping point for Harvey on whether he has surgery or not? Is it a certain percentage tear of the UCL? Outside of Halladay, has any other pitcher foregone Tommy John for rest/rehab and come back to pitch for so well and long as he has?
Stephania Bell (3:47 PM)
Gus: I wrote a piece on it earlier this week where I explain all the things that go into the decision (go to espn.com/fantasy). The next imaging they take on Harvey should help clarify as there will hopefully be less swelling and they can better evaluate the area. Also, how he feels will be important. And as far as Halladay goes, his problem was really a flexor/pronator strain. While he had some evidence of wear on his ligament, did not sound like they saw a true tear. Either way, the idea was to see how he responded functionally. Think he proved that he did just fine.
Hi Stephania! Any worries about Roddy White's ankle?
Stephania Bell (3:47 PM)
Johnny: In a word, no.
Hey Stephania wondering if i should hold on to Jose Baustista with the playoffs starting next week in my league? Please Help!
Stephania Bell (3:50 PM)
Matt: I don't know how long you're willing to wait. It's likely going to be a few weeks before he returns so you may want to seek immediate help elsewhere.
buck showalter once said all young pitchers coming to the majors should get Tommy John surgery right away. after all these young pitchers getting elbow problems is he right?
Stephania Bell (3:51 PM)
Davis: I have great respect for Buck, but, no.
Johnny (Grand Rapids)
Any concern over Trent Richardson? I draft tonight and am wondering if he poses any more injury risk than say CJ Spiller or Jamaal Charles?
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
Johnny: I think his history is what I call a yellow flag. Has some injuries but typically plays through pain. As I've said, any of these top RBs are high injury risk simply due to exposure. Can't make a huge case of any one of the top 10 as being "more" at risk.
Bill (San Diego)
Apologies if you already addressed this, but do you think Gronk will avoid the PUP list?
Stephania Bell (3:54 PM)
Bill: No apologies necessary. Not sure the decision has been made yet as the team may be waiting as long as they can to see how he does each day. But if Im guessing right now, I'm leaning towards him being on active roster and available around 4 weeks into season. BUT, that is fluid.
Beat the 4PM Bell (Charlotte)
Is T.Chatwood returning to rotation soon? If healthy a better add over Cahill/Kennedy in NL only 8 teamer?
Stephania Bell (3:57 PM)
Hello in Charlotte: Yes, Chatwood to make a Sunday start it appears. I add over Kennedy. Toss up with Cahill.
Considering Marshall's hip, which side of this trade would you rather have: AP and Mike Williams or Rice and Marshall?
Stephania Bell (3:58 PM)
Ryan: Hip or no hip, I take AP and Williams, because of AP. He is just that much better.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
Does Garcon still strike you as a higher injury risk than any other player? Love the upside, worry about about hsi foot...
Stephania Bell (4:00 PM)
Scott: Like him with the upside. Can't worry about the foot. It may resurface but in the scheme of things, not enough worry to keep me from having him on my team. But it's all relative to the other guys available at the time when drafting.
Beachy play this season again if so SP/RP and hold in DL spot or drop?
Stephania Bell (4:01 PM)
David: Nothing set in stone but I would not be surprised if they pull the plug on his season. I'd drop.
Stephania Bell (4:02 PM)
OK everyone. Thank you so much for coming to the chat. Always a pleasure. Enjoy the football tonight!
