AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Good morning, gang! We've got 60 more minutes of fantasy chattage all lined up, so let's get right to it. Second cup of coffee is in hand... who is up first?
Is Harvin worth a roster spot in a keeper league? Got him off free agents but he counts toward a bench spot.
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
With injured players you are stashing it really comes down to whether or not you end up needing the spot. Once bye weeks are over, certainly your depth is not nearly as important, so as long as you remain injury-free, one roster spot as a stash is not a big deal.
Bobby Parnell (New York)
Am I done for the year?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
No reason to think otherwise... even if Parnell "can" return, Mets may be overly cautious post-Harvey and simply shut him down.
i have been with out Braun and E Cabrera and have slid from 1st to 6th place and barely hanging on to a playoff spot. Who are some call ups i should grab that will help keep me in the hunt. Missed out on Walker by a day...
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
Certainly, we're not 100 percent sure which teams will call up which players, but you can look to Owings from Arizona and Springer from Houston as two potential bats to grab, should they get added.
How do you feel if Eli is you starter in a 12 team league?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
Never going to win you a week, and may even cost you a game or two when he gets a bit pick-happy. That said, he's relatively consistent, and *fingers crossed* as durable as they come.
What's the story on Taijuan Walker? Will he be a better option than, say, Scott Kazmir? Hector Santiago? Gallardo? Need to bolster my pitching for the playoffs...
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
I like Walker. Drafted him in our ESPN Dynasty League... the concern for 2013, along with the usual "adjustment" period that many pitchers have to go through is simply how long he goes... I think he'll have 25-30 more innings this year - that could be over 5-6 starts, or just 3-4, depending on how they use him. Wins not likely, and certainly not late.
McRanda (Big Brother House)
Are we in trouble next week if one of us does not win the HOH? Thoughts going forward AJ?
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
Only if Judd wins. He's the only one likely to be willing to upset the applecart.
Any sleeper RB's whose value significantly increases in a PPR league?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Hard to say if Gio Bernard, Danny Woodhead or Marcel Reece are sleepers... but those three are hugely bumped in PPR.
Marc (Malden, MA)
What are your thoughts on Eli in a league without negatives?
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
If you don't lose points for INTs, then Eli's definitely a top-10 caliber QB. 4,000 yards is 4,000 yards.
Are you staying away from the DEN RBs?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
Not staying away, but certainly not going to be the first to climb on board.
With J. Stewart now possibly out for the year, who's the better spec add in a 1ppr. Tolbert or the rookie Barner?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
Tolbert isn't really a back you can feel comfortable starting. His usage won't increase enough. If you're only looking for a lottery ticket, why not go with Barner?Resisting urge to recommend J. Oliver...
Rather have Joique Bell or Christine Michael as a 4th RB? Who has the higher upside?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
This is one of those situations where watching preseason games may hurt you... Michael looks great, but will he play? Will he play ahead of Turbin if Lynch gets hurt? I doubt it. I'd have to lean Bell.
Elvis (Tupelo, MS)
Steelers look like a pending train wreck both in real-life and fantasy...with Bell hurt, does anyone on that team look like fantasy starter to you? Antonio Brown?
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
Brown still has potential, yes. But I agree, that offensive line does not inspire confidence.
The Man (New York)
In deep leagues, like 14 teams, how do you view trading depth for an improvement in your starting lineup? It gets very scarce very quickly.
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
No right or wrong answer here... I will say that because there are fewer waiver wire picks to be had, at least early on in the season, I'd rather sacrifice a few points in my starters to have some insurance in case of catastrophic injury. Once bye weeks start to filter through, I'm more apt to lose some depth.
Hey AJ! FIGHTING for last playoff spot BASEBALL! Think Joey Bats returns soon? or will the Jays just keep him out w/no chance for wild card? thanks!
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
I wouldn't hold my breath here.
Bryan Clark (Mahomet IL)
10 team keeper league where you keep them in the round you draft them. Thoughts on drafting 49ers M. Lattimore in the last round? Will he have any value next year.
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Worth a shot. The NFL is the one league where your window of clarity on who will be starting doesn't give you much of a view... but there's no risk here, considering you can always cut him this year if you need the spot.
Which side of this trade you like more... Jimmy Graham and Lance Moore for David Wilson and Greg Jennings.. this is a PPR league
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
I like the Graham side more, but there's something to be said for not having too many eggs in one basket, as well as this depending a ton on the RB situation Wilson is coming to...
Starting Taijuan Walker against Houston?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
Starting Johnny Fairplay's grandmother against Houston.
Hi A.J. One hour to make a decision. ESPN Standard league 12 teams. Can only keep one player. Who do you like best of Charles, MCcoy, or Trent Richardson? I am leaning Richardson as the higher ceiling player.
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
Along with lowest floor... I go JC.
is the seahawks defense the best out there? I dont want to draft them to soon so Ill wait for the others to start coming off the board. Who other D has the potential to challenge the Hawks production?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
Certainly one of the best... the whole NFC West could earn you a ton of fantasy points, especially if return TDs are included. I don't think you do need to draft a defense too early, but around Round 9-10, when RB/WR starts to severely thin out, it might be worth breaking the D/ST seal.
Scooter (Fair Hope)
When will Springer get a call up? I am desperate for speed / power in a 16 team 5x5!
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
If he hits a home run or two this weekend, there's a chance they may let him stay down at Triple-A to get to 40-40 for the year. (He has 37 HR now.) But I don't see any reason not to call him up on Sept. 1.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
Would you be ok flying with just Jordan Cameron in 10/12 tm leagues?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
Never a need to draft a backup TE, in my opinion. I have no problem going with just one. Cameron is as good a roll of the dice as anyone else not in the top 5.
Due to a technical error during my draft I auto-picked Victor Cruz over Vincent Jackson and Andre Johnson. Please talk me off the ledge as it has been bothering my since.
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
How much control do you have over whether or not your picks have a good season? Absolutely zero. We're all just speculating. It will either work out for you, or it won't. Not worth losing any sleep over it.
When would be the appropriate time to draft a defense?
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
The difference between the No. 1 D and the No. 10 D is very small on a week to week basis. I don't see the need to draft defense in the first 8 rounds, unless we're talking something like a 16-team league. At that point, it comes down to having a tiered draft list and when you have no clear cut favorite at RB or WR, that's when you can feel good about jumping into D.
I plan on picking up a def late in my upcoming draft. What are some bad offenses to play against? Week 1 TB vs Jets sound ok?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
I don't think we know for sure completely until Week 4. That's when the ranking of Off/def, especially in terms of "good at/against the run" start to cement. But any team that hasn't yet decided on a QB or are going with a rookie? Those are teams I want to face in Week 1.
I'm stacked at RB but a little thin on my bench for WR. Drop Bernard Pierce for Michael Floyd? Non-PPR and I'm NOT a Ray Rice owner.
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
I think I'd at least try and trade him to Ray Rice's owner first...
Which New England preseason 'fantasy darling' do you prefer, Thompkins or Sudfeld?
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
Simply because the Patriots have been a team that throws to multiple TEs in the past, Sudfeld has more appeal at the moment, and even if/when Gronk returns. We've seen WR disappear on this team before.
Any advice for the type of players to nominate in a first time auction draft?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
I always like to be the guy with the biggest bankroll. To that end, I prefer to nominate players that I don't want to own, but that I am sure enough will go for more than $1. This way, when a guy I do want comes along...I have the moolah
Kuroda has looked terrible lately, would you be OK with dropping him in a redraft league where I am about to reach my max innings so I can pick up another bat?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
If you've gotten close to your max innings, might as well drop all your pitchers, good or bad! Maybe not... since other may pick them up, but you get the idea.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
So nominating the likes of DMC, Ryan Mathews and DeMarco is a good strategy?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
Exactly. If you end up hearing crickets and get stuck with them for $1, it's not the end of the world. But if someone else has just spent $10 on one of them, say, then they're less likely to go high on the same level RB you do covet.
Bill (San Diego)
Taking Mike Vick before round______would be considered a reach
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
I don't look at it so much as a Round with QBs. I wouldn't take Vick at all until the top 7 are off the board because I don't rate him that high... and then, if we're only drafting 1 QB, I might wait a long time to get mine because I know 7 others owners aren't going to be looking...
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
Andrew Luck will be a top __ QB, and TY Hilton a ___ WR (PPR).
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
10 for Luck (but just so) and 20 for TY.
Had a draft last night where Foster fell to me at #7. Does that surprise you as much as it surprised me?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
Not completely. I think he was a lock #2 before any injury news. With the uncertainty, he's in the 2-6 range where there's not a lot of difference. So yes, 7 surprises me, but 6 would not.
Which players are you consistently landing in mock drafts?
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Mostly it's the later rounds, where my personal preferences sneak in that there's a lot of repeats. Travis Kelce, Marcel Reece, DeAndre Hopkins, etc. Because I do a lot of mocks, I will often intentionally draft a player I wouldn't otherwise want just to force me to mix it up a bit... I guess if there's one guy I reluctantly have been grabbing a lot it's Anquan. Not sure why.
TY Hilton (Indy)
Word is my snaps are going down with DHeyBey now in town...you worried?
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
No. I've seen DHB play.
Zingbot (BB House)
Kenny Stills (WR New Orleans )
What do you think I'll do as the third WR for New Orleans as I've been tearing up the preseason.
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Plenty of balls to go around in New Orleans, but generally speaking I think rookie WRs get way too much hype for a strong preseason. I'd be thrilled with 40 catches on the year.
I am a Gronk owner and can't use him week 1. Would you roll the dice on Brandon Myers or Ed Dickson week 1 or take a gamble on newbie like Tyler Eifert?
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
Doesn't really matter... If a TE gets 4-for-40, that's all you can expect. TDs are a dart throw. All three fall in that 4-for-40 category.
Graham is arguably the safest and most dominant player at his position - is it crazy to take him over the likes of Forte, AJ Green and Dez? (I'm naming guys available in my keeper draft)
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
If you have keepers, then you're already in Round 2, if not 3. That's exactly where Graham should be going...
Chris (Rutgers Grease Trucks, NJ)
Hi AJ! I will give you a 3rd cup of coffee (Dunkin) and a soda for lunch if you can please answer: I havethe 5th overall in a standard draft tonight, and the 4th on Monday. Please rank the top 5 RB's overall. I am assuming that All day goes #1 in both. Thanks so much!!!
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
I go AP, Rice, Lynch, Foster, Martin, JC
Helen (Jury House)
Thoughts on Vereen in a PPR?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Top 25 RB, but not any higher.
Where does Darren Sproles rank in your list of 1 point PPR RB's? I took him at pick 17 and thought it was incredible he was still there.
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
Top 15 pick to me, so you got a two-spot value.
What is the strangest league composition you've been in? I'm currently in a 16 team defense, kicker, punter, and head coaches league.
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
I'm in a 20-team league with Johnny Fairplay, Lawyer Milloy and Dorsey Levens... rules aside, that's nuts.
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
Folks, got to run. But it's been a great hour. Catch me on Twitter (@ajmass) and I'll try to answer when/if I can. Until the next time, good luck and remember to always expect the unexpected!
