Buzzmaster (12:43 PM)
Hey folks...sorry, I just got word that Ivan ran into some travel delays. Looking to see if he can still chat now.
Do you see Jameis Winston having enough maturity and mastery of the FSU offense to upset Clemson in Death Valley?
Ivan Maisel (12:46 PM)
We only have two games of evidence, but he played well both games. Yeah, sure. I think FSU is capable of winning the game with Winston at QB. It definitely wouldn't be an upset, but that word jarred me a little bit. It's two really good teams. I don't think of either one winning as an upset.
ouwooferman (houston tx)
Ivan, great work as always. Is ND ripe for the picking by OU in two weeks?
Ivan Maisel (12:47 PM)
Yeah. I'm not sure I'd go along with the whole ripe thing. I think ND is still searching for answers on defense. Oklahoma seems to have found its way on offense. Absolutely, I think OU could win that one.
Is Tennessee due for an upset of Florida?
Ivan Maisel (12:48 PM)
Josh, I admire your optimism, but any team coming off a 59-14 loss and then flying home 2,500 miles wouldn't be ready to do anything. The fact that the Vols are learning under a new coach and has to make its second straight road trip in a tough place to play, I would be floored if they played well enough to beat Florida.
NJ Duck Fan (New Jersey)
How do you feel Oregon's chances of running the table to make it to the NC. What chance do you give them in defeating Alabama if they both make it to the NC?
Ivan Maisel (12:50 PM)
If Oregon runs the table in front of them, I think it's safe to say they'd have a good chance of winning the BCS title game. I think the Pac-12 North is the strongest division in the FBS. They have to play at Stanford on a Thursday night game that is going to be, I promise you, hyped to the gills. If the Ducks run the table, not only will they be in the BCS game, but I'd expect them to be favored.
Jabber (Des Moines)
So what do you think about Bo Pelini, Ivan? You might as well get that question out of the way.
Ivan Maisel (12:52 PM)
I wrote about it in the 3-Point Stance today, Jabber. To be completely honest with you, I feel like Pelini is the victim here. Yeah, he was naive to say what he said in front of an open mic, but I don't like the ethics of that being recorded and then released. We in the media have been f-bombed and other delightful verbal weaponry for a long time. That's just part of the fun. But somebody really had it in for Pelini to do this and that's too bad.
As a Michigan fan, how concerned should I be about last week's performance?
Ivan Maisel (12:53 PM)
Well, Akron hasn't beaten an FBS team in three years.
Paul (Winston-Salem, NC)
After a couple of down years and a 1-2 start against the softest part of the schedule, is Jim Grobe starting to feel some heat at Wake Forest?
Ivan Maisel (12:55 PM)
I have not heard anything. I have wondered at what point Wake would decide Jim Grobe is not winning enough. He remains one of the most respected head coaches in the game. I don't know how anybody at Wake who witnessed the Deacs in the Orange Bowl would have the guts to say that Jim Grobe shouldn't be the coach at Wake any more. To answer your question, I don't know. But I watch with fascination.
wil (salem, oregon)
I think based on what I saw this week, UCLA might be a bigger test to the Ducks than Stanford (Though both are tough) Am I wrong?
Ivan Maisel (12:56 PM)
I think it's safe to say that both UCLA and Stanford are going to make Oregon prove that they deserve to be No. 1 or No. 2. It's too soon to tell whether UCLA or Stanford is better. They play one another before the Ducks play either one, so we'll have a pretty good idea by then.
Mack Brown (Austin, Texas)
After Nick Saban, David Shaw, and Gary Patterson turn my soon to be vacated position down...who does this fine University on the 40 acres look to? Todd Graham? Art Briles?
Ivan Maisel (12:58 PM)
It's pretty obvious that Mack's buns are toasty. I don't think anyone has to explain to him that Texas isn't playing at the level that Texas should be playing at. The one name I wonder about, if Texas makes a change, is Art Briles at Baylor.
Jeff (Los Angeles, CA)
From top to bottom is the Pac 12 the best conference?
Ivan Maisel (12:59 PM)
I think you could make a pretty good argument at this point. I would still say the SEC is No. 1, but I think the margin is narrowing. We'll know a little more after Saturday night when ASU goes to Stanford. The big question to me is the strength of the South. If UCLA is strong, ASU maybe, at this point, I don't know what to say about USC and I don't think anyone else does either.
Andre (Tallahassee, FL)
Does Alabama's performance on D last week suggest to you that Oregon could beat them?
Ivan Maisel (1:00 PM)
That performance suggests that Alabama would be vulnerable to a lot of people. If you don't believe me, then go check out Nick Saban's comments this week about his secondary.
Ryan (East Lansing)
Now that MSU seems to finally have a little bit of production out of their offense what chance do you give them to pull the upset over ND?
Ivan Maisel (1:02 PM)
I think the Spartans have a reasonable chance. It's one of those rivalries where both teams seem to play well against one another. We are far enough into the season that things are beginning to gel on both teams. If I had to pick right now, I'd say Notre Dame, but I think it's going to be a great game.
Ivan Maisel (1:02 PM)
Thanks. Sorry I was late. We will talk next week.
