Chat with Kevin Gemmell

Welcome to SportsNation! On Wednesday, ESPN.com's Pac-12 reporter Kevin Gemmell will stop by to talk some college football.
Gemmell covered San Diego State and the Mountain West Conference for three years before joining ESPN.com. As a Santa Clara graduate, his hope is that the Broncos will one day re-institute football. Until then, he lives vicariously through his readers. Gemmell lives in California with his wife and son.
Send your questions now and join Gemmell Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET!

Kevin Gemmell (2:00 PM)
Welcome to chat. What have you got for me today?
BHollandz (Next to JGMAA's Window)
While I'm digging the play of Mannion and Cooks, I really hope their numbers go down due to a run game that's working. Do you see the Beavs getting that going soon?
Kevin Gemmell (2:01 PM)
I'm pretty surprised at the lack of a running game as well. They were so committed to it last year and it really showed signs of improvement. We need to see when Storm Woods gets cleared to play. But right now, the defense isn't helping out the offense and games are turning into shootouts -- which typically doesn't bode well for rushing.
JB (San Francisco)
Given Stanford's style of play, do they basically have to run the table and hope for a few key losses by others to get to the BCS championship game? Because after seeing the first 3 games, it's clear that they could go 12-0 and have no wins that look dominating.
Kevin Gemmell (2:02 PM)
That's a fair point ... and one I've been hammering on for the last year on the Pac-12 blog. Style points shouldn't matter, but to people who don't watch Stanford, they only see the final score. I think if Stanford runs the table, they'll be fine, because that would have included wins over ranked Washington, Oregon and UCLA. Those are tough draws though. Given how deep the conference is this year, I think it's going to be tough for someone to go 9-0 in league play.
Carson (Phoenix)
Hey Kevin, if you want I can wipe your tears for you when Stanford goes down on Saturday
Kevin Gemmell (2:03 PM)
No tears. That would be a fantastic win for the Cougs.
Don (Layton, Utah)
UCLA historically doesn't do well in Salt Lake. USC is down. Colorado is at home. Am I an overconfident Alumni, or does it seem like Utah has a chance of competing the the South?
Kevin Gemmell (2:04 PM)
I'm not sure if Utah is ready to win the title. But they are going to make it tough on the frontrunners. I think getting back to a bowl game would be a huge step in the right direction. They have better depth -- which is the key to competing in a BCS conference. They've spent the money on coaches, recruiting, facilities etc. It takes time to catchup, but I think they are on the right track.
KG (New York)
How do kickoff times get decided? It seems to me that it would benefit the Pac-12 to have more 5pm local time kickoffs (8 ET) to get more exposure around the nation (instead of 730/1030).
Kevin Gemmell (2:05 PM)
TV, TV, TV.
Daniel (Tacoma, WA)
Is it me, or did Stanford get really lucky with their conference schedule this year? Look at the road games -- WSU in Seattle, Utah, Oregon State (probably the toughest one), and USC in a down year? How in the world did they manage to get all the (currently) ranked teams at home? Am I crazy for thinking they got really lucky?
Kevin Gemmell (2:06 PM)
Not really. If you look at the schedule it's backloaded with four straight rivalry games at the end of the year. Remember, they played those same teams on the road last year and won the league.
Derek (SLC)
Mike Leach putting in defensive starters for the last plays against Idaho to preserve a shutout... good idea or bad?
Kevin Gemmell (2:06 PM)
Like it. Shows swagger over a weaker opponent.
Rabadon (Washington, DC)
Changes the Bruins finish their Stanford/Oregon road trip bowl eligible?
Kevin Gemmell (2:08 PM)
Not impossible, but gonna be tough. They will be favorites over Utah and Cal (but remember how they choked one away against Cal last year). Then they have to win one of those two games -- no easy chore on the road.
BDAZ (Phoenix)
Do you still think ASU is a contender in the South? After the first quarter of the season, I think UCLA runs away with it. Stanford showed that ASU collapses under pressure, both offensively and defensively. The giants are still napping.
Kevin Gemmell (2:09 PM)
I think ASU is exactly where I thought they'd be at this point in the season. The next two weeks are critical for restoring national credibility. Beat USC and they are in great shape in the South. Beat Notre Dame and they are back in the top 25. As we've thought all along, it comes down to that UCLA game ... which I still think is a coin flip at this point.
Trojan1981 (Totally the real Trojan1981's house)
Since you said in the mailbag that you didn't agree with Ted's final power rankings, what would your power rankings be?
Kevin Gemmell (2:10 PM)
We're both in accord on the top half. The big issue was USC behind Oregon State and Utah. Oregon State should be ahead of Utah based on head-to-head ... even though I thought Utah's win over BYU was more impressive than OSU's win over the Aztecs. And I thought USC's win over Utah State was the most impressive of the three. Utah State is a tough football team.
JohnV8r (El Dorado Hills, CA)
Kevin, how many points does home field advantage amount to for Washington?
Kevin Gemmell (2:12 PM)
At least a touchdown ... and someone asked earlier about rain, but the questions are coming fast and furious. I don't think that impacts either team's running game. Both have phenomenal backs. But it could impact an Arizona passing game that is still trying to find its footing.
Matt, Ontario, CA [via mobile]
What was with all the sc and Oregon St questions in your mailbag? You should write about teams that are relevant.
Kevin Gemmell (2:12 PM)
I answer the questions that are sent. Want to read about other teams? Write me about other teams.
Matt (Portland)
THe Huskies have been called a young team by the media (only a handful of seniors on the 2-deep), but they've been called a young team for several years in a row now. How is that possible? Is that term just a cliche', or have they figured out a way to bend the space / time continuum?
Kevin Gemmell (2:13 PM)
That hasn't come from this half of the Pac-12 blog (and I don't think I ever remember seeing Ted refer to them as young). In fact, we've written extensively about how veteran they are with so many players coming back.
Lance R. (Canada)
Why are people high on the Wildcats? Everyone knew they would start 3-0 with possibly the easiest out of conference schedule in the FBS. We'll find out how good they are this weekend but why are teams who play cupcakes given any respect?
Kevin Gemmell (2:14 PM)
I put them in my top 25 simply because there are a bunch of other 3-0 teams who have played weak nonconference schedules. And all things being equal, might as well back the team I cover. I too am eager to see what they are made of this weekend.
Chris (San Jose)
While I've seen lots of commentary on the ASU/Stanford game, I haven't seen much talk of why it happened and to me it was one thing: ASU's o-line was manhandled in the first half. Isn't that going to be a problem for them all year starting this week against a talented front 7 from USC?
Kevin Gemmell (2:15 PM)
That's the key to the game. ASU's third-down conversion rate is only in the low 40s (I think 42 percent, off the top of my head). They need to find a way to sustain drives. They gave up 10 TFLs against Stanford and I know Uko and Breslin are licking their chops.
Bob (Stanford)
Why is Ohio State still ranked ahead of Stanford?
Kevin Gemmell (2:16 PM)
They aren't in my top 25. I can only speak for myself. You'll have to jump on the chats of all the AP writers to ask them...
Kevin Gemmell (2:16 PM)
No control over auto-update guys. Sorry.
Jake (Vancouver)
The Pac-12 South is undefeated in all games that weren't against the Pac-12 North, but have failed to win a game against the Pac-12 North so far. How does this weekend look with Washington/Arizona and Oregon State/Colorado being the two N/S clashes?
Kevin Gemmell (2:17 PM)
Predictions come out tomorrow morning at 6 a.m., per usual. But I think that's pretty telling so far. Both divisions are talented and deep, but I think we can all agree that as of now, the real balance of power is in the North. But there's no easy outs in the Pac-12 this year.
RL (Pullman, WA)
Call me crazy, but I feel oddly optimistic about the Cougars facing Stanford in Seattle. Especially after last year's surprisingly close game at Palo Alto, are you willing to consider a Coug upset?
Kevin Gemmell (2:19 PM)
Willing to consider it? Sure. No Ed Reynolds for the first half. No David Yankey? Cougs defense playing really physical up front ... Stanford struggled in CenturyLink last year. Lots of things that could contribute to an upset. I will be real interested to see if Washington State attacks the middle of the secondary in the first half without Reynolds.
Zach (Mpls)
What is your take on the supposed "East Coast Bias" in college football? Does it exist?
Kevin Gemmell (2:19 PM)
As a West Coaster my whole life, all I will say is that ... uh oh.... intenet conne... shaky....
David Frost (The road not taken)
If I wanted to write a poem about USC, Stanford and Oregon, what would it be?
Kevin Gemmell (2:20 PM)
Hot, Hotter, Hotseat: An epic poem.
Chris (Medford, OR)
Early thoughts on how ASU-Notre Dame might shake out?
Kevin Gemmell (2:21 PM)
Need to see how ASU handles USC's front seven before passing judgement. Want to see what improvements/adjustments they make this week.
TrueCoug (Seattle)
It seems apparent the culture has changed in Pullman. If Halliday limits mistakes (i.e., no picks) and the D stays strong and slows Stanford's offense, would the upset win finally give Cougar Nation a reason to shout "we're back, baby!"?
Kevin Gemmell (2:21 PM)
Wins over USC and Stanford would certainly announce to the rest of the league that the Cougs are back.
Matt (Portland)
Which current coach is most likely to leave his school by his own choice? (to the NFL or to a bigger school) Shaw, Mora, Sarkisian, Grahm?
Kevin Gemmell (2:23 PM)
Don't see Graham in the NFL. Don't think his personality would play well. Shaw, Mora and Sark all seem really happy where they are. But I would say Mora or Shaw would probably get the call first.
Walt White (Norfolk, VA)
Kevin, can you say this with me: Pac-12 Pac-12 Pac-12 Pac-12 Pac-12 Pac-12!!! ? Technically this IS a question. Have a good day!
Kevin Gemmell (2:23 PM)
Is this a Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo thing?
Steve (Chicago)
How do you think the long layoff will effect the Buffs?
Kevin Gemmell (2:24 PM)
Absolutely no clue. They could be super rested and ready or super rusty. Talked with Mac about that yesterday. It's like they are kicking off the season all over again. Weird situation.
zeke (vancouver, b.c.)
If Trojans beat Sun Devils, USC's defense will have to score __ pts?
Kevin Gemmell (2:25 PM)
Their defense? Hmmm, I'd say a pick-six would certainly help. Can't ever bank on defensive points though. I think they offense has to score at least 31.
a skeptical Sparky (outside of Tempe)
Kevin, I can?t believe Todd Graham taking the blame for his team poor showing against Stanford. Getting blow off the line has nothing to do with scheme, but with heart and ability. How can the players not be to blame for not being ready to play such a big game? I don't we are ready for a championship.
Kevin Gemmell (2:26 PM)
Championship? Probably not. Division title? Still very possible. As you know, I sat in on three days of film with ASU. The schemes are sound. But that was their first real road test and sometimes young players aren't up for the task. Let's see what happens over the next couple of weeks before we totally throw ASU under the proverbial bus.
DL (Portland)
Heard an interesting comment from a talking head the other day with regards to Stanford. This guy maintains that Stanford's style - slowly wringing the neck of opponents and winning by relatively close scores (as opposed to, say, Oregon) makes them a lot more susceptible to upsets. Sounded reasonable, but I'd be interested in hearing your perspective.
Kevin Gemmell (2:27 PM)
Meh. Keep in mind Stanford won eight games by a touchdown or less last year. This group has experienced every possible scenario and they are as mature and disciplined of a group as you'll find in the league. Don't buy that.
Jeff (Tampa, FL)
Which PAC-12 performer has been the biggest surprise/disappointment to you this season?
Kevin Gemmell (2:29 PM)
Don't really like to comment on specific players being a disappointment -- because we're not in the locker rooms and we don't know all the facts. For example, Will Sutton doesn't have any sacks yet, but he's constantly being double and triple teamed. So statistically he might be a disappointment, but he himself isn't a disappointment. Make sense? As for surprises, as I wrote this morning, really pleased with some of the true freshmen that are playing really, really well. Gillam, Jack etc. have been outstanding. Pleasantly surprised to see that.
Dylan (SLC) [via mobile]
Can we please start the Andy Phillips All-American campaign?
Kevin Gemmell (2:29 PM)
Tell me where to sign up. So far, I don't see how he's not in the conversation.
mexicanbluefish (oaxaca, Mexico)
Which qb in the pac-12 has shown to have the best footwork?
Kevin Gemmell (2:30 PM)
I actually watch that stuff closely, so I'm glad you asked. Keith Price has really been technically proficient from what I've seen. Same with Mariota and Hundley.
Sark (Montlake)
How about a shout out for Deontae Cooper? 3 straight years of ACL injuries, scored his first TD last Saturday.
Kevin Gemmell (2:31 PM)
Shout out! That was very cool to see. Huskies run game is on fire, averaging more than 300 yards per game.
AKCoug (Alaska)
Is there a PAC-12 coach that younthink jumps ship to Texas if Mack Brown is terminated? Any coordinators that could get that job?
Kevin Gemmell (2:32 PM)
Interesting. Graham's name got thrown out, but I don't think it would be a good fit. Derek Mason and Graham's assistant, Mike Norvell, should be head coaches in the next few years.
Don (Berkeley, CA)
Does Shayne Skov look fully recovered from his ACL injury to you? And will he regain his title as the top LB in the conference, surpassing Anthony Barr by season's end?
Kevin Gemmell (2:33 PM)
Yes, I think Shayne is 100 percent healthy. By the way, we'll have another skype chat with him next week. Him and Barr are asked to play two very different positions, so I don't think they are necessarily comparable. But for what they are asked to do, they are two of the best in the country.
Darin Wright (Monterey)
How is Oregon state going to shut down Richardson this weekend?and is Cooks looking like a Biletnikoff finalist?
Kevin Gemmell (2:34 PM)
Not sure. They haven't been able to shut down anyone. Absolutely on Cooks. He's leading the country in catches (by 10) and touchdowns. Keep this up and he'll be a finalist.
Frank (sandy, ut)
Has the Pac12 closed the gap on the SEC for best conference in the country?
Kevin Gemmell (2:34 PM)
Gotta win a crystal ball first before you can have full-fledged bragging rights. But top to bottom, I think it's the deepest conference in college football.
Maxdarkfire (Washington DC)
I'll cut my question down: What are the chances Cal will make the game in Autzen a shootout and at least interesting to watch?
Kevin Gemmell (2:35 PM)
Need to reduce the turnovers. I think they'll score some points, but the defense has been so gutted by injuries that it's going to be tough to stop Oregon. Of all the games this week, this would be the only one I would consider a shocking upset if the favorite lost.
Bizarro Ted Miller (SEC) [via mobile]
Bahahahaha!!! Hello Kevin! Soon I will replace your precious Ted Miller and infest your PAC 12!
Kevin Gemmell (2:36 PM)
Sounds like someone put tap water in your Grey Goose...
JB (San Francisco)
Are you going to watch the America's Cup race today? They're towing the gate buoys into place now.
Kevin Gemmell (2:37 PM)
Can't ... too much work. But one of the Stars and Stripes boats is down here in San Diego and for my buddies 30th (a long time ago) we rented it and took it out on the San Diego Bay. Nothing more empowering than being at the helm of that thing. It was very, very cool.
wildcatsUA (Phoenix)
How would you rank the pac-12 stadiums?
Kevin Gemmell (2:37 PM)
I get this a lot ... I think they all have their own coolness and charm. Impossible to rank because each is different in its own way.
Ryan williams (Ohio)
How much would Ohio state be Oregon by? 30,40,50 or 60?
Kevin Gemmell (2:38 PM)
Is that how much Oregon is spotting you?
Chris (LaLaLand)
With the recent news that the NCAA has reduced PSU's sanctions, USC fans are calling for Haden to react or he should be fired. USC has now become a soap opera, what your take on that program right now and what do you see happening?
Kevin Gemmell (2:39 PM)
If I'm a USC fan, I'd be bitter. Great for Penn State, but amazingly hypocritical of the NCAA. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some back channel calls going on.
James (Redmond, WA)
Kevin, couldn't agree more on the Dexter finale - but rejoice as Homeland will soon be back (no spoilers, I promise). With Arizona coming to town this weekend, what are the Huskies chances if Wilcox throws 7-8-9 in the box and forces Denker to beat us with his arm?
Kevin Gemmell (2:40 PM)
Was so bummed at Season 2 of Homeland. Going to give it a couple of episodes to see if it gets better. Thought it was a really, really weak season. Dexter, ugh. And yes, I'd expect the Huskies to force Denker to throw the ball.
Lance R. (Canada)
How would you rate Taylor Kelly's performance so far? He has certainly thrown the ball a lot more but seems to miss quite a few open receivers. The drops sure aren't helping either.
Kevin Gemmell (2:42 PM)
You said it. The drops have been terrible. I think Kelly has been pretty steady. He's doing what they are asking him. I'd actually like to see him keep a few more times on teh zone reads. Seems like he hands off to Grice more than he probably should when the DE (or whoever they are reading) bites on the handoff.
Dexter Morgan (Miami)
You didn't like the ending to my series? What would you have done different?
Kevin Gemmell (2:42 PM)
You know, make it good.
Mike (SLC)
Do you really think that 10 PAC-12 teams can make bowl games? Can that even work with only conference games (and three ND) games left?
Kevin Gemmell (2:42 PM)
That requires math that I'm not capable of doing during a chat. Send it to my mailbag and I'll number crunch and try to get it in next week.
Uh Oh Chongo (Danger Island)

I didn't even read this, but it's from Chongo, so I must post...
Ω ( )
link to your mailbag?
Kevin Gemmell (2:43 PM)
It's on the blog under my pic.
Preston (Tempe, AZ)
After ASU's poor performances the last two weeks on special teams, the run game, and dropped passes should I be more concerned with coaching or player performance?
Kevin Gemmell (2:44 PM)
Drops happen. Not much you can do to coach it other than rep it and rep it and rep it. The special teams have been terrible. Part of it is scheme, part of it is players getting blown up on protection.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
What USC defenders do you predict will take home all conference honors other than Leonard Williams?
Kevin Gemmell (2:45 PM)
Breslin, Uko, Bailey, Cravens all off to a good start.
Ω ( )
Thanks Kevin!
Kevin Gemmell (2:45 PM)
You got it.
Greg (LA)
USC's 3 keys to beating ASU are...?
Kevin Gemmell (2:45 PM)
Make Kelly uncomfortable. Force third-and-longs. Keep drives going.
Steven S. (Hollywood, CA)
Most disappointing series finale: Dexter, Sopranos or Gilligan's Island?
Kevin Gemmell (2:46 PM)
Don't remember how Gilligan ended. I was actually OK with the Sopranos. I thought it was creative enough and artsy enough that it worked. Dexter was just bad. Everything was out of character.
BDAZ (Phoenix)
If Arizona beats Washington, would you put them ahead of ASU in the South rankings?
Kevin Gemmell (2:47 PM)
Depends if ASU beats USC and if so, by how much. But that's a long discussion Ted and I would have on Sunday.
Preston (Tempe, AZ)
ASU's 3 Keys to beating USC are...?
Kevin Gemmell (2:48 PM)
Sustain drives. Keep Kelly mobile in the pocket with lots of sprint outs ... don't have him throw from the same spot on consecutive plays ... make Kessler extremely uncomfortable.
Mark the cable guy (Utah)
After the Facebookacolypse there was very little comment activity. People seem to have found their way back. Are you receiveing more questions in the chats?
Kevin Gemmell (2:48 PM)
The chat questions never really dropped off. As of right now, about 400 will remain unanswered. You guys bring it every week, and I do my best to get out as many answers as possible.
Zed (Eugene)
Hey Kev-O! If you could choose one non-conference game (obviously involving one of our beloved Pac-12 teams) to magically appear (ignoring sheduling conflicts, etc.) this season, which one would you choose?
Kevin Gemmell (2:49 PM)
I think the obvious one is Alabama vs. Oregon/Stanford. But I'd like to see Oregon vs. A&M for the headline value. Colorado vs. Nebraska renewing that rivalry. Think that would be fun.
Sean (Tacoma WA)
You should make this "3 keys" question a weekly post for each match-up on the blog.
Kevin Gemmell (2:50 PM)
We have the "What to watch" post every Thursday which hits on a lot of these key points. And usually we expand on key storylines with weekly features.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
How critical is this season for Todd Graham not only within the conference, and nationally, but recruiting wise in his talent rich state?
Kevin Gemmell (2:51 PM)
Absolutely. He's got some momentum. And beating USC and Notre Dame will go a long way toward keeping that going.
Phil Sam Majamma (Los Eugeneles)
To follow up on a previous question, what's the pecking order in selecting the TV games?
Kevin Gemmell (2:52 PM)
That discussion takes place in rooms I'm not privy to. So honestly, couldn't tell you.
biggeazy in the heart of Husky Nation [via mobile]
Kevin, ESPN talking heads dont want to admit this but this year, the PAC 12 is the best conference top to bottom. Forget the seven titles. Thats in the past. Im talking about THIS year. Today. Please spread the gospel of PAC 12 to all corners of the nation. Do you agree or disagree?
Kevin Gemmell (2:53 PM)
Yep, this year, absolutely. The problem is now the league is going to start ripping itself apart in the nine-game schedule. But it is what it is.
Kimmy Gibbler (San Francisco)
What pac 12 game are you looking forward to the most this weekend?
Kevin Gemmell (2:53 PM)
All of them!
Treebeard (tall tree) [via mobile]
As a Stanford fan of many moons, I do have a little problem with "style points" excuses. A grinding offense will keep points keeps scores low, but the defense still shouldn't be allowing points. Oregon is blowing people out by scoring but also not allowing scores. Can't put up 59 in a row any other way. You are welcome, Oregon fans. Go Card.
Kevin Gemmell (2:54 PM)
Shaw has constantly said that Nick Aliotti is the most underrated coach in the league. And he might be right.
Ryan ("working" in the office)
Was Utah's defense better against BYU (compared to Oregon state) or was that just a lack of BYU offense?
Kevin Gemmell (2:55 PM)
I think a little of both. I talked with Whittingham about that yesterday in terms of the getting teachable moments from the Oregon State game. Thought they buckled down nicely in the second half.
Matt (San Diego)
Some think UCLA can handle any road environment (including Autzen) given how they finished in Lincoln, Neb. Thoughts?
Kevin Gemmell (2:55 PM)
It's not the folks in the stands. It's the players on the field. And Oregon is light year's ahead of Nebraska.
Puddles (Eugene)
Do you see Aliotti going for a head coaching job in the future?
Kevin Gemmell (2:56 PM)
Not sure. He's had ample opportunity to leave. But he seems to really enjoy what he's built.
Ryan ("working" in the office)
Kevin, sing me a song...your the piano man.
Kevin Gemmell (2:57 PM)
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody and you've got us feelin' alright.
Dexter Morgan (Miami)
So what did you think of the finale? and would you have ever think of me as an Oregon fan?
Kevin Gemmell (2:57 PM)
Who says you're an Oregon fan. You could be a Beaver fan...
John (Los Angeles)
Hey Kevin!Given UCLA's two early bye weeks, do you think that is too much down time going into Utah? Thanks.
Kevin Gemmell (2:59 PM)
For other teams, maybe. But UCLA has been through so much emotionally that I think the extra time is going to really be beneficial. I'm sure we all have lost someone ... and when it happens at young age, it's tough to deal with those feelings. I lost a good friend in high school. I deal with death now in my 30s differently than when I was 18. Same for these guys. So the time off I think is actually helpful for them to sort things out.
Bronco Mendenhall (Provo, Utah)
I just can't seem to figure out how to win against Kyle Whittingham. 9 of the last 12 and the last 4 have all gone his way. What am I not doing right?
Kevin Gemmell (3:00 PM)
There have definitely been some weird endings. But you were simply out-played this time around.
Kimmy Gibbler (San Francisco)
Does UW have any first team All-Americans this year?
Kevin Gemmell (3:00 PM)
Seferian-Jenkins, and I think Sankey is making his case.
Deb Morgan (Miami)
Sorry Kevin. I told Dex not to do it.
Kevin Gemmell (3:00 PM)
I know you did. It's not your fault.
JB (Dawg House)
Pac-12 is on fire right now, keep spreading the word!
Kevin Gemmell (3:00 PM)
Consider the word spread.
Kevin Gemmell (3:01 PM)
OK folks, that will do it for me. Good chat, as always. Let's do it again next week. You've got Ted tomorrow. And, as always, I hope your team wins this weekend.
