Dan Rafael (12:00 PM)
Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the chat to kick off a monster fall boxing season. Big weekend with Stevenson-Cloud for the light heavyweight title and Chavez Jr. returning against Vera on Saturday night on HBO. And then there are significant fights almost every week between now and the end of the year. So check out all of our coverage for this week's fights, check out my blog as well as the updated schedule and rankings and let's get to it.
Julian (Dallas/TX)
Good afternoon Dan, I read an article, mentioning that Chavez Jr's lack of professionalism embodies everything this is wrong with boxing currently, touching on the fact that he continously is missing weight or not trying to make weight because it's "not a championship fight" and he can just do what he wants and pay the fine do you agree? or What do you make of this whole situation?
Dan Rafael (12:02 PM)
First off, Chavez doesn't miss weight. He has made weight for his past fights. This one is an exception. He has problems getting down, of course, but he has made weight. That said I don't like the fact that fighters just can buy their way out of it. Sometimes there is a safety issue to consider. But it is also unfair and not honorable. I am not sure of the right answer to the problem.
Paul (Concord, CA)
Dan, to say JCC, Jr. doesn't have dedication to his craft is an understatement. Recently other fighters who have had trouble making weight (Brandon Rios) are on the brink of death at weigh-in and still don't make weight but at least they tried.
Pepe (Monterrey Mexico)
I know it has been almost two weeks but I watch the replay of #TheOne do you know what were the 6 rounds that CJ ROss gave to Canelo?
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
Not a clue.
JR (Los Angeles)
Does Sergio Martinez Have a contract with HBO if not why would it be an issue just to go and try to make a fight with Floyd on showtime ?
Dan Rafael (12:04 PM)
He doesnt have a contract with the network to my knowledge but he and his team are loyal people. They know that HBO helped make him and they appreciate than and respect that. That said, it's not like Floyd has offered to fight him or shown any interest whatsoever. I'm sure if Floyd said he wanted to fight Martinez we might see some movement.
Alan Partridge (Norfolk Broads, Norwich)
Dan, which of the 2012 Olympians interests you most?
Dan Rafael (12:05 PM)
I am very interested to see Lomachenko as a professional, beginning Oct. 12. I like the Japanese middleweight Murata and think he might become something. Oscar Valdez looks like the real from Mexico. Jose Ramirez (USA) and Felix Verdejo (PR) are very interesting prospects. Errol Spence (USA) has a ton of potential. There are a number of 2012 Olympians to watch for.
Chris (Phx, AZ)
Chances Chavez vs Vera called off due to Chavez not coming in on weight?
Dan Rafael (12:06 PM)
Zero.
Pratik (Charlotte)
Sup D$, Dare I say this, but do you think Broner is underrated? 27-0 with 22KOs...I'd much rather watch him go against Mayweather next than Garcia who would almost certainly get KO'd by Mayweather considering what Mayweather did to Canelo. Thoughts? Thanks.
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
I dont think he is underrated at all. He has a great record and has a ton of talent and potential but his resume is fairly limited. His best wins are over DeMarco at 135 and Paulie Malignaggi at 147, a fight I thought he won easily but others thought was a lot closer. So he is a work in progress. He is only 23 too, so there is room to grow as a fighter.
joe (detroit)
IYO what is the biggest money fight that can be made now at the moment in Boxing?
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
Now that Mayweather-Alvarez is in the books, the richest fight out there is probably still a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, even though it will never be as big as it would have been and should have been about 3 years ago.
Brandon (Jacksonville)
Danamita...I think JCC.Jr. is in danger of alienating his fans. I know that I used to be a fan and the more exposure he gets, the less I like him.
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
Based on reading the messages on my Twitter feed and Facebook page, MANY MANY MANY fans, Mexicans and others, have already turned against him. They are upset because they don't believe he respects the sport.
Sun Devil (Los Angeles)
Dan, have you seen Oscar Valdez fight, and if so, what are your impressions of him thus far?
Dan Rafael (12:11 PM)
I have. Superb prospect. Fast, powerful, technically sound, poised, very professional. He has a massive future I think. He has great amateur experience and an outstanding team behind him in Top Rank and manager Frank Espinoza.
Mike (dc)
A Rigondaux/ Aballadiev doubleheader might be the worst doubleheader on HBO ever?! BARF
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
I think before you can make that kind of comment it would make sense to see who they are fighting first.
joe (detroit)
Deontay Wilder is going to be 30-0 with 30 KO's on Oct. 26th and still has not fought a decent fighter.
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
Correct, especially since his Oct. 26 opponent is supposed to be Nicolai Firtha.
Frankie J (Seattle)
D$$$$---Happy Friday, so watching Rivera get his final out yesterday, did you cry---cheer or both??
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM)
Being honest, I got a bit choked up. I have followed Rivera since watching him during his brief stop as an Albany-Colonie Yankee in Double A. He is one of my favorite 3-4 Yankees ever (Matting, Jeter, Mo, Bernie Williams). It's the end of an era and a great era.
joe (detroit)
Dan do you ever bet on Boxing?
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM)
No.
James (CA)
What's going on with Victor Ortiz? When is he going to fight again?
Dan Rafael (12:14 PM)
He is making a movie in Europe, so his return to the ring is up in the air. There has been talk maybe in December but nothing solid at the moment.
Chris (Jersey)
Any word on Adamek/Glaskov venue, yet?
Dan Rafael (12:14 PM)
Not done yet but possibly at the Izod Center in NJ.
David (Chicago)
who the hell is Nicolai Firtha
Dan Rafael (12:17 PM)
Journeyman heavyweight. 21-10-1. True story. When he fought Johnathon Banks on a Klitschko undercard last year we called it as a rehersal fight for our Epix telecast. The fight sucked so bad -- and it really really sucked -- that our producer told us after the 5th round or so to just stop calling it because he couldn't take it anymore. He's just a guy. Wilder should just absolutely smash him to oblivion. Got knocked out by Fury, went 10-round distance in lopsided loss to Povetkin. But all you really need to know is he got knocked out by Tye Fields. It's a disgraceful fight.
Mike (Cleveland)
If Cloud beats Stevenson do you see a rematch vs B-Hop next?
Dan Rafael (12:18 PM)
No. There isn't going to be a rematch.
joe (detroit)
I get the feeling for Cinco de Mayweather we are going to get Mayweather-Danny Garcia as the main event and Canelo-Cotto as the co-main event.
Dan Rafael (12:19 PM)
Both of those fights could very well happen but there is zero chance they would be on the same card. Canelo-Cotto would headline it's own PPV and make tons of money on its own.
jgines puerto rico [via mobile]
Hey Dan, Thurman vs Broner on Mayweather undercard, your thoughts?
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
Broner is not going on an undercard at this point. He is about to headline his own PPV. So that is extremely unlikely to happen.
The Hard Y (PDX)
Does Murat pose a threat to BHop?
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
I dont think so. Even at 48, BHop should outbox him.
Bert (Omaha)
Mr Dan, Any chance T Crawford & Arum will bring a fight to Omaha if he keeps winning? Thanks!
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
I would think that is very possible next year.
Steve (DC)
When does Vitali have to decide if he is going to fight Stiverne?
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
As I undersand it in the early part of next year.
Dave (RI)
Dan, do you know if there has been any movement in the HBO/GB relationship? Not having them on their network is killing them.
Dan Rafael (12:23 PM)
There is no movement I am aware of. It's not a good situation but it is hardly "killing" HBO. Last I checked, HBO had a pretty damn good fall lineup set.
Tmac (Ga)
any idea how much money Chavez is giving up to vera? He seems more comfortable losing money than weight
Dan Rafael (12:24 PM)
Six figures. If I had to guess I'd say probably about $150K or $200K. Just a guess.
Mike (King Under the Lonely Mountain)
Any updates on the Khan/Alexander fight?
Dan Rafael (12:24 PM)
It's being worked on still. Patience.
Brandon (Jacksonville)
Why is Broner getting a PPV? Who decides these things? He doesn't have the resume for it that's for sure. Does he have the following for it?
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
Between GB, Showtime and Haymon, they made the call. They think he can become a PPV attraction and they are getting started. Not evey PPV has to do a million buys to make a profit. It's all about how much it costs. So they are taking a gamble to see if it pays off. Besides, Showtime has spent so much money this year the budget might be tapped for a fight with Broner and Maidana. So they will give PPV a try and put on a good undercard and see how they do. It makes sense to me. I happen to be VERY interested in a Broner-Maidana fight.
Paul B (NY, NY)
Sup Dan. Been a while since I have written but I always monitor the chats At what point do you expect EPIX to make their decisions on boxing coverage for 2014?
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
I honestly have no idea. If and when they decide to do more boxing, I am sure my agent will give me a call and let me know.
Mike (King Under the Lonely Mountain)
Danito, Only 2 fights on HBO right? JCC Jr and Stevenson. There is no 3rd fight Correct?
Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
Correct. It was supposed to be a show that also included Haye-Fury but that fight was postponed so it's a doubleheader.
Chris (NYC)
Any idea what Arreola has planned?
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
He is in position to possibly fight a rematch with Stiverne for an interim title or perhaps a vacant title, depending on what Vitali does so right now he sits and waits to see what happens.
Chris (Boston)
Are you surprised that HBO does not have a logn term deal with Miguel Cotto? Whats to stop him from jumping to Showtime again for a Canelo fight? If that happens then someone at HBO needs to get fired.
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
I am not surprised at all. First off, Cotto didnt want to do a long term deal. HBO wants a rating and needs a big name fighter on the air. Cotto delivers both of them. If he walks away for another fight on Showtime, so be it. For whatever mistakes they have made at HBO, not having Cotto under a longer term deal is most definitely not one of them.
Sun Devil (Los Angeles)
I hope the Haye/Fury fight ends in a draw and neither of those clowns move closer to earning a shot at a title.
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
LOL. Double knockout????
Dave, NJ [via mobile]
It's frustrating watching a fight on Showtime because they ignore what goes on in the corners between rounds. Too many highlights and celebrity shots, too much talking. Do they consider that an HBO trademark which is why they don't do it?
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
I have no idea, but I'd like to see them focus a bit more on the corners too.
Paul (Pueblo)
If Broner keeps tweeting out pictures of his junk, you'll be surprised how quickly that PPV future dries up.
David (Dallas)
Your coworker Brian Campbell believes Marquez vs Bradley will be FOY. I was curious what your thoughs were?
Dan Rafael (12:31 PM)
I think it'll be a good fight but in a year that has already had some epic fights and with Alvarado-Provodnikov coming, I would have to diagree with my young padawan learner.
Roger (OH)
Speaking of tomorrow's doubleheader, do you know which fight will be shown first?
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
Stevenson-Cloud, followed by Chavez-Vera. And after the live fights will be the first episode of Bradley-Marquez 24/7
Moneyteam (Lamont)
How come you say Canelo at age 23 is what he is as a fighter. "Ready as he will ever be" but broner is "only 23" so there's time to improve as a fighter
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
Canelo has 45 fights and a one-dimensional style.
Bob (NYC)
What are your predictions for the weekend? Oh, and is Lederman in the booth as another color guy...or is he just doing his scorecard thing?
Dan Rafael (12:33 PM)
I like Stevenson and Chavez both by KO. Lederman will be in Montreal doing scoring. Steve Weisfeld will be in LA doing scoring.
Jason (San Diego)
DTM, do you and Brian Campbell get along?
Dan Rafael (12:34 PM)
Of course. B$ is a good dude and very passionate about boxing.
Mike (King Under the Lonely Mountain)
Hey Dan, would you be interested in a Cotto/JMM fight? Mexico vs PR
Dan Rafael (12:34 PM)
I dont think that works just because I dont see Cotto every going back to 147 and 154 seems too much for Marquez.
Denny (Denver)
Are you aware of any real double knockouts in boxing history?
Dan Rafael (12:37 PM)
There was almost a double KO in Rocky II. In all seriousness, off the top of my head the only one I can think of is in the Charles Williams-Merqui Sosa first fight in 1995. It wasn't really a KO but the fight was stopped and ruled a technical draw after seven rounds because both fighters had taken excessive punishment. Just a sick, grueling war and the ref stopped it. It was an ESPN fight. Both guys might have died that night. So not a double KO but almost a double TKO because of what happened.
slater (west by god virginia)
DTM if you were just a fan and not a writer whom would you be more nervous to spend your hotel and flight to see fight haye or chavez. I feel like both are 50 50 on whether their fights get cancelled
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
I wouldn't spend my own money to go see either one of them.
Mr. Samuels (New Orleans)
Is Joe Hanks done?
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
I hadn't realized he had ever started.
J.G. (Atlanta)
Do you ever have second thoughts about criticizing a fighters' weight considering your own physique?
Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)
Not at all. My job is to cover boxing and write about it, not to make weight, the same way as it's not a fighter's job to write columns and be able to spell.
David Haye (UK)
Sorry Dan, im going to have to postpone this chat. I have a blister on my typing finger. toetally gutted about this.
Pat (CT)
What round do you believe Golovkin will turn Stevens into a good boy?
Dan Rafael (12:40 PM)
LOL.
Jacob (Clovis, CA)
Any further revision on the PPV numbers for The One? Where do you see the final number settling in? Over or under 2/5?
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
If there numbers are revised it will be a few weeks or months. When HBO revised Mayweather-Oscar numbers it was like 2 months later. So if The One is revised it will be a little while.
The Hard Y (PDX)
I've always had an issue with Rocky II and the near-double KO. Creed doesn't land a punch; Rocky's momentum is what causes his fall.
Dan Rafael (12:42 PM)
Get over it.
Chillin_bori (Miami)
Dan, explain to JG from Atlanta that you campaign the HW division of boxing writers and in chats are the undisputed, undefeated "King Freak"!!!
Roger (OH)
What an ignorant question by J.G. When Dan starts signing contracts that have a specific weight obligation detailed in them, then your analogy might by a little less idiotic (but still really dumb).
Jacob (Toronto)
Did you see the UFC main event last week? That was an all-time great fight no matter how you view the sport!
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
I didn't watch it but heard it was good.
Victor (Chicago, IL)
Lol you wouldn't spend any money to go see Chavez Jr? The same guy you admitted brought you your most dramatic moment in the history of boxing when he dropped Martinez.
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
Correct.
Brooks (New Hampshire)
J.G. drink the Sprite
Reid (Cleveland)
Dan - what type of crowd do you expect for the Chavez-Vera fight - have the tickets been moving?
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
I hear tix are pretty soft.
Fabian (Los Angeles)
Why dosen't Floyd have any endorsement deals??
Dan Rafael (12:45 PM)
I guess corporate American is not interested in being part of The Money Team.
The Hard Y (PDX)
Ban J.G.
Steve (Hartford)
Was there ever a revision to the Mayweather/Cotto ppv #'s?
Dan Rafael (12:46 PM)
Not that I am aware of. About 1.5 million, one of the biggest PPVs in history.
Dominique (Quebec)
Maybe I'm dreaming but...Stevenson vs. Kovalev? Can you think of a match up in the last ten years where each fighter would have brought scary knockout power to the ring comparable to these two guys?
Dan Rafael (12:47 PM)
Awesome match and very much on the agenda for HBO in 2014. There's a good chance it will happen if both guys keep winning. If Stevenson wins tomorrow, there's a good chance he will be back Nov. 30 in Montreal (probably to fight Bellew in the mandatory) with Kovalev on the undercard. If they both win, we could see them fight each other in the first part of 2014.
Brian (Corona)
Hey Dan, if Demetrius Andrade pulls it off in his fight against Martirosyan and picks up the vacant title, do you think he could be a potential opponent for Canelo next year? Or does Banner promotions strictly work with HBO?
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
Banner has mainly worked with HBO in recent years for its bigger fights but I see now reason why if a deal was offered they wouldn't go to Showtime.
Jose (Ewing, NJ)
Golovkin vs Abraham would be an awesome fight at 160. Dan dont you feel like I have that Abraham is too small for the super middleweight division? The guy was a pretty solid middle weight.
Dan Rafael (12:49 PM)
I think GGG would absolutely freaking decapitate Abraham, who is slow, does not throw a lot of punches at all and is basically shot now. He would meet a violent ending vs. GGG.
Pete (Texas)
Have you seen all access the epilogue? I liked when they showed in between rounds of Sr telling Jr what to do then asking if he was paying attention.
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
I did watch it. I love the All Access epilogue episodes and am very happy Showtime puts in the time and money to make the show. If I had one quibble, I'd prefer less fight action (since we've seen the fight) and a little more in the dressing rooms and activity after the fight is over.
Mike (King Under the Lonely Mountain)
Kind of surprised that there is no talk of the Wlad/Povetkin fight. It's around the corner and there is no buzz for it. Haven't heard that HBO is covering it. It's still going to be on HBO right?
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
It will be live on HBO next Saturday afternoon from Moscow and then replayed with the Cotto fight. I interviewed Wladimir this week at length from his training camp in Austria and will have a full feature next week on the fight.
Tom (Yonkers, NY)
Will the Haye-Fury fight still be on HBO in Feb?
Dan Rafael (12:52 PM)
Hopefully, but HBO has not said if it will be involved. They have to deal with their own internal stuff with the scheduling department before they can announce that.
Joey (Santa Ana, CA)
Who and where is Leo Santa Cruz fighting? I only trust your info.
Dan Rafael (12:53 PM)
Santa Cruz is supposed to be back on Showtime Nov. 2. No opponent set at this point. Schaefer told me the fight could be at StubHub Center or maybe in San Antonio.
Ryan (St. Paul)
Dan, Did Abraham only move up and stay at SMW because of the super six or was he having real problems making 160?
Dan Rafael (12:54 PM)
Combination I think. The Super Six was a huge opportunity for him in terms of money and competition plus the weight was getting tougher to make and there were not real big names to fight especially since a Pavlik fight (huge at the time) was not going anywhere.
Johnny (Oakland)
D$, how do you rate Mayweather's performance on the Colbert Report?
Dan Rafael (12:55 PM)
I actually have it on my DVR but have not yet watched it.
Rags (NYC)
Ugg..Wilder v. Firtha...can we just call it TKO3 and get a better fight on the Showtime broadcast?
Dan Rafael (12:55 PM)
TKO3? Why so long?
Mr. Samuels (New Orleans)
Do you consider the Corrales vs. Castillo fight I the greatest fight of all time? Top 3?
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
It is definitely No. 1 in terms of fights I have been ringside for. But I also think it merits discussion as the one of the top few fights ever.
Kevin (Boston)
I thought the epilogue was awesome. So Epic. I'd like to have those on DVD to watch again in a few years. I could be wrong though, I was Chavez Jr. level baked when I watched it.
Dan Rafael (12:57 PM)
LOL! I actually have made DVDs of entire All Access series and 24/7 series for all of the fights they have covered. So I burned the epilogue yesterday to finish off the Mayweather-Canelo DVD, which has all five episodes on it.
Brian (NJ)
I also really liked how in the epilogue the cameras picked up the audio of Canelo's corner admitting there was no way in hell that was a draw. Huge respect to them for speaking the truth and not trying to talk a bunch of bs to support CJ Ross's scoring.
Dan Rafael (12:58 PM)
Agreed. Canelo and his team were class all the way, just manning up and saying they got beat. End of story.
Aaron (Hartford)
You know Dan, I dont know who asked it but that is an amazing point, Mayweathter, potentially to go down as one of the greatest boxer ever, in an era where just above every professional athlete has some type of sponsor has none....
Dan Rafael (12:59 PM)
It is very telling.
Tan (Hazleton)
What do you think of the theater for boxing? Was at ggg's last fight at foxwoods and don't want to miss his next one
Dan Rafael (12:59 PM)
The MSG Theater is one of the best places to watch boxing. Even the cheap seats provide an excellent view. Just a great arena for boxing.
Matt (Pittsburgh)
Dan, for all of the heat that HBO rightfully has taken this year I have to say that there schedule starting tomorrow night through the end of November is very impressive.
Jeff (Scottsdale, AZ)
How come many are complaining about Wilder's recent fights against stiffs and TJ cab drivers....his competition has been better than Povetkin's in the last 3 years and Povetkin is getting a chance to turn his JV belt into the real thing.....maybe Wilder is doing the right thing
Dan Rafael (1:01 PM)
His competition has most certainly not been as good as Povetkin's in recent years and Povetkin's has sucked too for the most part.
Savi (Chicago, IL)
D$, how can I get a copy of the 24/7 De La Hoya - Mayweather from you?
Dan Rafael (1:01 PM)
You can't.
Danny (Boston)
Eddie Hearn is doing some great things in Boxing in the UK and I think he has the next great Heavyweight in Anthony Joshua who debuts Oct. 5th. What is your opinion of Eddie Hearn as a promoter? What do you think about Anthony Joshua as a fighter?
Dan Rafael (1:02 PM)
Eddie is doing a great job and making some excellent fights, but he is also aided in that because he has a monopoly on the Sky dates. As for Joshua, I have no opinion. Way too early to say. I saw him in the Olympics and he looked solid but I thought Camaralle beat him in the final personally. As a pro, the jury is out until we see him fight. But based on his amateur standing, I am looking forward to seeing him.
Bruce (Alexandria, VA)
Just want to recommend the movie theater experience to the fight freaks for a PPV. $20, a nice crowd of interested fans, and a big screen. Totally worth it if you can't find a bunch of friends to share the PPV cost.
Dan Rafael (1:04 PM)
I hear that from fight fans all the time after big fights. Glad you liked it.
Mike (Macomb, MI)
Dan, Are you dropping Julio from your middleweight rankings after the fight on Saturday?
Dan Rafael (1:04 PM)
Yes. He will be dropped from 160 in next week's rankings.
Jesse (Downey)
How big is your Boxing recordings collection. I would imagine a few shelves full.
Dan Rafael (1:05 PM)
A few shelves? I have well in excess of 3,000 VHS tapes and probably 2,000 DVDs, at least. I have tens of thousands of fights. It is way more than a few shelves. It's actually quite sick.
Larry (Lexington)
Watched the Tyson-Marvis Frazier destruction again last week. God, watching Tyson from 30 years ago is still unbelievable.
Dan Rafael (1:05 PM)
Agreed.
Ace (Sactown)
Dan are you going to be at the Chavez fight?
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
No, I am not traveling this weekend. But I will be at the Cotto fight next week and then at Bradley-Marquez the week after in what is going to be a busy fall travel season.
John (DC)
From what you know, has Klitschko been focused for the Povetkin fight?
Dan Rafael (1:07 PM)
Klitshcko is always focused for his fights. And after talking with him at length the other day he is for this one as well, in my opinion. Wladimir is one of the most deidcated, professional fighters I have ever encountered. He takes his career very, very seriously.
Jason (Dallas)
Any chance that trainers will start to get penalized when their fighter comes in grossly overweight? Isn't that their job too to ensure their fighter makes the contracted weight?
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
No, the fighter is responsible for himself.
Curt (Los Angeles)
Break the Ice....Joel Julio!
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.
Derek (Brooklyn)
I know you've explained how options work bf but from an economic perspective, how does Shaw share in the promotion tomorrow? Is his split from tomorrow's fight determined when he cut the deal for Dawson-Stevenson?
Dan Rafael (1:10 PM)
Yes, when they made the Stevenson-Dawson deal, Gary got an option on Stevenson's next fight and will make a percentage of the money off tomorrow night's fight.
Jeff (Scottsdale, AZ)
If the fight actually happens when do you think Wlad get Povetkin out of there?
Dan Rafael (1:10 PM)
I have said from Day 1 that I think Klitschko knocks out Povetkin. When I dont know but I think he will win in dominant fashion.
Dan Rafael (1:11 PM)
Weights from Montreal: Adonis Stevenson 173.8, Tavoris Cloud 174.6 lbs.
Anthony (PA)
Dan, you mentioned before you missed Tyson-Douglas live, have there been any other big fights that you didn't get to see live?
Dan Rafael (1:13 PM)
Over the past 20 years or so I cannot think of a big fight I have not seen live either at ringside or on television.
Danny (Chicago)
DTM - you've been a vocal critic of Rigo , but you've never denied his talent ... who do you think he should fight next , that can be competetive and make a decent tv fight ?
Dan Rafael (1:14 PM)
It's a tough call because his division is not very deep and the best guys are with Golden Boy, like a Santa Cruz or a Mares, etc... I think we may see him fight Jospeh Agbeko next, which is actually kind of interesting since at least I think Agbeko will bring the fight to him.
Jose (NJ)
What if cloud pulls it off? Is Don King back in the game?
Dan Rafael (1:15 PM)
No.
G-Money (Brooklyn, NY)
Ummm, I think Dieter needs to make his entrance soon
Anthony (Winston-Salem)
Who in your opinion is the most honest promoter in boxing, the one most likely to tell it like they see it even if it makes their fighter look bad?
Dan Rafael (1:15 PM)
DiBella. 100%.
Josesito Lopez (CA)
Dannyboy, I know for a fact you didn't watch my draw with Canelo live!!
Dan Rafael (1:16 PM)
You said big fight.
Mr. Samuels (New Orleans)
How do you watch fights like Dereck Chissora's last weekend? Do you have every channel or something?
Dan Rafael (1:16 PM)
I watched a stream of the fight.
P-Rock (Brooklyn)
You're a fat nasty human that should be shot for looking the way you do. Your mother should've aborted you. I bet you were like 20 lbs when you were born. I can picture you now with a bowl of Doritos and a Big Gulp in front of your computer. Uggh! Do a sit-up for once you lard ass.
Dan Rafael (1:17 PM)
Par for the course. I am honored you have such emotion for me.
joel (whittier ,ca) [via mobile]
Who you taking marquez or bradley?
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
I honestly have not made up my mind but I'll have a pick fight week when we unveil our Fight Credential during fight week.
Jeff (Scottsdale, AZ)
Holy Cow! some folks really harbor some mis-placed resentment huh?
Brent (Detroit)
P-Rock enters a long line of idiots before him
John (DC)
Do you think Chisora could fight Bryant Jennings next?
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
I doubt it. I would imagine Chisora will defend his European title next.
David (PWAY NJ)
On a weekly chat basis, how many comments like P-Rock do you get that you dont post in the chat?
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
A lot.
Chris (Long Beach)
P-Rock should stop describing his life on chats.
Steve (Kansas)
Do you think JMM retires if he wins? Some say it may happen, but I don't see this being his last fight no matter the outcome.
Dan Rafael (1:20 PM)
I think at this point, Marquez takes it fight by fight and after each bout evaluates how he feels and what kind of offer there is for another fight. He is 40 now, has been in a lot of hard fights and has made tens of millions of dollars. If he fights Bradley and decides to retire, win or lose, it won't be a shock nor will it be if he fights again either way.
The Village (Parts unknown)
we found our idiot... now come home P Rock-
Gerardo (AZ)
Dan, you've said before that you are not particularly keen of Thomas & Mack. What are the reasons? I've been to LV a hundred times, but never to T
Dan Rafael (1:22 PM)
Just not a modern facility. Site lines are poor for boxing, especially in the upper deck. From a technolgy point of view, the wireless is brutal, which for my job is vital. It's also a pain in the neck going back and forth to the arena as opposed to a place like Mandalay or MGM, where the arena is right in the hotel, which is a lot easier. Just not my favorite place to cover fights. That said, the Wynn, which is the host casino, is a great place to stay.
Dieter (From Sprockets)
Dear Dan and Freaks, I suffered a cut in training so I will be doing no physical activity while it heals. .... Just kidding!!!!!!! Thus, NOW is the time in the chat when we DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mark (Mary Esther, FL)
Dan, going to the Cotto fight next week. Is there any industry hotel or headquarters for the fighters or media where fans may be able to get a chance to meet fighters or industry people?
Dan Rafael (1:24 PM)
There is, it's the fight hotel where I am booked but I honestly cant remember which one and I dont have my paperwork in front of me!
AJ (New York) [via mobile]
Does Delvin Rodriguez have a chance next Saturday? How big of an upset will it be if Cotto loses?
Dan Rafael (1:26 PM)
At this stage of Cotto's career I dont think it qualifies a massive upset but it would be an upset. Delvin is experienced and has heart so you never know. That said, Delvin has usually fallen short when in with the top opponents.
Fred (NYC)
Who did you have winning Hagler-Leonard.
Dan Rafael (1:27 PM)
Leonard.
Jeff (Scottsdale, AZ)
Any insider rumblings about when Trout will be fighting again? Love the way he fights!
Dan Rafael (1:27 PM)
Nothing right now. All quiet on that front.
Mike (King Under the Lonely Mountain)
Dan, would your rather have GB's stable or TR, Hearn's, Shaw's, Debilla's stables combined?
Dan Rafael (1:28 PM)
Right now GB has the best stable in boxing in terms of established titleholders and guys ready for prime time. Top Rank has a good stable too but I think they have the deepest group of prospects who might eventually be ready for prime time when compared to the other companies.
Julio Cesar Chavez (Fat Burger)
Dan, I just ate Ivan Calderon and I'm still hungry, can you get me some Cocoa Puffs?
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
LOL
Bk don [via mobile]
Any chance you skip the Hopkins card b/c of the week match ups or is it too close not to go?
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
I'll be at BHop's fight. In the past 14 years I have missed 3 BHop fights, and only one because I just didn't go. The other two (Eastman and Robert Allen 3) I was scheduled to go to but USA Today canceled my trip, once because they froze everyone's travel during a budget thing and once because I had given my notice I was leaving the paper to go to ESPN and the fight fell during my two weeks' notice so they canceled the trip.
Chris (Rotterdam Jct, NY)
Didnt K9 Bundrage and secew powell have a double knockdown?
Dan Rafael (1:32 PM)
Yes, although it was not called. But it did not have a double knockout. There was also a double knockdown in Hasim Rahman-Corrie Sanders that the referee missed.
Mike (Miami FL)
Next week, immediately after the fight, while you're typing away trying to make your deadline, would it okay to sneak up behind you and start giving you a neck rub?
Dan Rafael (1:33 PM)
No.
Dan Rafael (1:34 PM)
No.
Scott (Raleigh)
I generally don't live under a rock, but why haven't I heard anything about GGG/Stevenson? Talk about fireworks. Maybe one is TR and one GB?
Dan Rafael (1:35 PM)
Go back and read my stories from when the fight was being made.
Dan Rafael (1:36 PM)
Here's my feature on JC Chavez Jr. heading into tomorrow's fight: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9730356/julio-cesar-chavez-jr-sideshow-weighing-career
Danny (Chicago)
Dan , do you think andre ward has any trouble with edwin rodriguez especially since the shoulder surgery and inactivity? Personally I've always been impressed with La Bomba
Dan Rafael (1:36 PM)
I think Ward wins easily. No knock on Rodriguez but different level of talent IMO.
Jeff (Scottsdale, AZ)
Do you think the Firtha fight for Wilder is a measuring stick fight since Povetkin was taken the distance against him 3 years ago?
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
No, it is just another easy fight for Wilder.
Dan Rafael (1:38 PM)
Linares is getting another title shot: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9728703/richard-abril-jorge-linares-fight-set-nov-10-tokyo
Choco (New Jersey)
What ever happened to 2008 Olympian Shawn Estrada? Last time he fought was on FNF years ago.
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
He was massively over his contract weight and has not done anything since. I talked to his promoter recently, who said he was back training so we might see him fight next year. Just a total waste of time and talent at this point.
Jesse (Downey)
What is more delusional Mundine thinking he can get a Mayweather fight or Mosley thinking he can fight 5 more years?
Dan Rafael (1:40 PM)
Mundine thinking he can get a fight with Mayweather.
kyle (nyc)
have you ever wondered what dogs think ice cream really is?
Dan Rafael (1:40 PM)
These are my readers.
Ben (Detroit)
Have you ever spoken to Wilder? No charisma?
Dan Rafael (1:41 PM)
I have, several times. He's a very nice guy and an excellent interview.
Marty (Cincinnati)
Hey Dan, did you see the Kassim Ouma documentary? Will it ever be released?
Dan Rafael (1:41 PM)
Yes I have seen it. I am in it. And it has been televised.
C. Butler (Los Angeles)
Does Roy Jones's Square Ring still promote fights?
Dan Rafael (1:42 PM)
It still exisits but has not promoted a fight in ages and has nothing coming up. They are basically out of business.
Dan Rafael (1:42 PM)
The weight limit is set for Chavez-Vera and the number of rounds have been cut: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9727304/julio-cesar-chavez-jr-vs-brian-vera-weight-limit-upped-173-source-says
KT (Tennessee)
Hey, Dan. Which do you think was Cotto's most meaningful win? Judah? Mosley?
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
Those were both really excellent wins. I would say Mosley, who was still a top guy at the time. I also give Cotto a lot of credit for how he handled Margarito in the rematch with so much emotion going on with that fight and just beat him down.
BoxFanDan (flanders NJ)
Dan Just want to say THANKS! for putting up with all the insults from tough guys behind a keyboard so that we can enjoy Friday chats and discuss our boxing passion. Much appreciated!
Tom (Vegas)
What was the worst decision you ever saw in person?
Dan Rafael (1:45 PM)
Joel Casamayor being given a decision against Jose Armando Santa Cruz. One of worst decisions in history. It was a 12-0, 11-1 fight with a knockdown and Casmayor got like a majority decision.
Dan Rafael (1:45 PM)
Let me take a moment to wish Mrs. DTM a happy birthday this weekend!
Richie (Bronx NY)
What was being talked about differently then usual when picking refs for Bradly/Marquez then the way it was done in the past.
Dan Rafael (1:47 PM)
The commission just questioned Kizer much more specifically about his methods for making selections.
Brent (Detroit)
I think the body blow knockout against Quintana was the fight that solidified Cotto as a major force. His win over Mosley was probably his Apex before Cheato go to him
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
That Quintana destruction was very impressive. Cotto was moving up and just laid an absolute beating on Quintana. I was at that fight and you could hear those body shots. He was extremely impressive that night against a good opponent.
KT (Tennessee)
Quintana quit on his stool against Cotto. The body shot was just a significant knockdown.
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
That body shot is basically why he quite. He was done.
Steve (Hartford)
Do you consider Floyd and Danny Garcia "lineal Champs" @ 154 and 140 respectively after their recent wins?
Dan Rafael (1:50 PM)
Garcia absolutely. Mayweather also. They are both "the man" at 140 and 154 based on who they have beaten.
clay (chattanooga)
hey dan, did see correctly that espn will have the weigh in? is that just online & devices or is it on tv as well?
Dan Rafael (1:51 PM)
ESPN Deportes will carry the weigh in live for Chavez-Vera and it will also be streamed live on the ESPN.com boxing page. 6 pm ET.
Brett (Minneapolis)
I just walked by Duane Ford and CJ Ross having a staring contest.......with the Sun.
Dan Rafael (1:52 PM)
Pay the man, Shirley!
Matt (Naperville, IL)
Why is Top Rank charging $65 for Bradley-Marquez? Are they nuts?
Dan Rafael (1:52 PM)
The SRP is $54.95, according to TR. I guess it is more in HD.
John (Gables)
Sergio Martinez,Erik Morales, future HOF?
Dan Rafael (1:54 PM)
Morales definitely, although some might not vote for him because of his failed drug tests. Martinez is probably getting in also.
Jon (Los Angeles, CA)
Happy Birthday to Mrs. DTM if she wants entertainment put on a ring entrance from Prince Naseem Hamed....
Sammy (Long Beach)
Any buzz about Sakio Bika's first defence?
Dan Rafael (1:55 PM)
His first defense is not scheduled. He has a shoulder injury and the fight on Oct. 26 is not happening.
Corey (Westwick)
My favorite Cotto fight was vs Ricardo Torres what a fight both men down Cotto shows heart and comes back to knock him out for thats when Miguel became a star in boxing
Dan Rafael (1:56 PM)
AWESOME fight. The anniversary of that fight was just the other day and I posted a link to it on Twitter and my boxing Facebook page in honor.
Peter (NYC)
Keep Chaves Jr away from Mrs. DTM's birthday cake until after the weigh-in!
Devale (Chicago)
Happy Birthday day Mrs D$!! Wheres the party?
V (CA)
Happy bday Mrs. DTM!!!
Joel Julio (In Dan's house)
Happy BDay mom!
Anthony (Chicago)
For everyone who is upset about upcoming ppvs. Don't forget Maidana vs. Morales was an epic ppv fight.
Dan Rafael (1:58 PM)
Good call.
Brent (Detroit)
Casamayor over Santa Cruz makes Bradley over Pacquiao look like an innocent mistake.
Jared (Boston)
Hey Dan, I remember you had posted articles in the past about the upcomign fights when FNF starts. Do you have any general idea about any fights they will broadcast when it starts back up?
Dan Rafael (1:59 PM)
No, because they aren't made yet but FNF will be back in January.
Dave NJ [via mobile]
Next week is the anniversary of Chris Byrd-Davarryl Williamson. Make sure you post a link.
Dan Rafael (1:59 PM)
I'd rather cut out my eyeballs with a pocket knife.
Adrien Broner (Ohio)
Happy BDay Mrs. DTM I have sent you one of my brushes.
Dan Rafael (2:00 PM)
Better that than tweeting her a picture of your junk.
Charlie (Tampa)
Is armando santa cruz related to leo ?
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
Leo is his younger brother.
Derek (Brooklyn)
Any updates on Kelly Pavlik? His life just seems in utter shambles right now, very sad
Dan Rafael (2:03 PM)
Read this from the other day: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9690994/kelly-pavlik-charged-refusing-pay-25-cab-fare
Miguel (Toronto )
Dan, which fighters do you believe actually run their own twitter accounts and which ones do you think do not?
Dan Rafael (2:04 PM)
Most run their own. For example, I know BHop and Oscar run their own. Floyd says he has somebody tweet for him, although his thoughts. Same with Tyson.
Brent (Toronto)
Any word on Gary Russell Jr's next fight?
Dan Rafael (2:04 PM)
Drum roll.... TBA.
Mike (King Under the Lonely Mountain)
Any news on Cunningham? A lot of potential HW fights that can be made, he could be part of them.
Dan Rafael (2:05 PM)
Steve Cunningham is in camp sparring with Wladimir Klitschko for the Povetkin fight.
Peter (Ann Arbor )
any truth to the rumor that the guy driving kelly's cab is gary russell's next TBA?
Dan Rafael (2:06 PM)
Pay the man, Shirley!
Jerry (Arizona) [via mobile]
Canelo should change trainers if he wants to be considered an elite fighter or someday a hall of famer. Nacho Berenstein would be interesting but Freddie Roach would be better to teach him more offense.
Dan Rafael (2:08 PM)
Why should he change trainers? Because he lost to the best fighter in the world? Please. He could have had Nacho, Freddie and Eddie Futch all in his corner and it would have been the same result.
joel (whittier ,ca) [via mobile]
How many episodes is the 24/7 for marquez bradley going to be?
Dan Rafael (2:08 PM)
Two.
Dan Rafael (2:09 PM)
Note I JUST got in the Bat Email from Keith Kizer regarding Sept. 14: All athletes tested. I am still awaiting an undercard test result, but all 8 PPV boxers tested negative on their tests. Also Smith and Molina each tested negative on an out-of-competition test on August 7, 2013.
Roger (OH)
Is the Gary Russell/TBA rivalry finally starting to reach the historical level of other great rivalries like Ali/Frazier and Pacquiao/Marquez?
Dan Rafael (2:09 PM)
Pay the man, Shirley!
Roger (OH)
Have you ever seen the video of a wasted Pavlik rapping on YouTube? I can't decide if it's more funny or sad, but it's definitely worth watching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bZYQ-Z2tso Maybe he can rap for Broner during his next ring walk!
Dan Rafael (2:11 PM)
Wow. That's sad. (Warning on the language if you are at work!)
Rude (LA) [via mobile]
Gary Russell wanted the hbo truck driver for the next fight but couldn't because of the hbo/showtime don't work together.
Dan Rafael (2:12 PM)
EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brett (Minneapolis)
Did they really need to test Smith and Molina for PED's???
Dan Rafael (2:13 PM)
LOL. I thought they might test positive for ambien.
Ricky (NYC )
Dan pease settle this between a friend of mine and me Floyd toys with Aaron Pryor for 12 rounds and frustrates him the whole fight?
Dan Rafael (2:14 PM)
I agree.
Bk don [via mobile]
In your opinion could a BJ Flores v Tarver fight get picked up by a network? Do you have any interest in the matchup?
Dan Rafael (2:15 PM)
I doubt HBO or Showtime. Zero interest and probably not a very good fight. What is the point? Personally, I have zero interest.
Derek (Brooklyn)
Has anyone at HBO ever expressed regret to you about essentially choosing Chavez over Canelo?
Dan Rafael (2:16 PM)
I dont think they have to say it. They know it was the wrong call.
James (Portland, ME)
Duane Ford thinks Chavez gave us all a training and professionalism lesson
Chris (Dallas)
Do you think Golden Boy will do another Knockout Kings card next summer?
Dan Rafael (2:19 PM)
I dont know when there will be the next one, but Schaefer has told me he wants to do one every year.
Peter (New York)
Had an argument with my dad over this. He said Chavez sr. would've beat Mayweather. I say no way. Slick boxers always seemed to give Chavez problems. Your thoughts?
Dan Rafael (2:20 PM)
Mayweather would box Chavez Sr. out of his boots.
Mr. Samuels (New Orleans)
Is there really any sense on paying attention to David Tua's comeback against Ustinov?
Dan Rafael (2:20 PM)
Not really.
fran (ny)
any news on adamek nbc undercard?
Dan Rafael (2:21 PM)
Karl Dargen supposed to be in the co-feature.
Dan Rafael (2:22 PM)

Give me Keith Thurman on December 7th!
Dan Rafael (2:25 PM)
He'll probably fight Soto Karass on the Dec. 14 PPV undercard.
Brinsley (St Albans, UK)
Hey Dan, what are your thoughts on George Groves ditching Adam Booth before the biggest fight of his career?
Dan Rafael (2:25 PM)
Quite surprising. I am not quite sure of the reason though.
Hector (Queens, NY)
True or False? You are currently wearing a TBE hat while chatting?
Dan Rafael (2:27 PM)
LOL.
Brent (Detroit)
Thurman-Soto Karass + Broner-Maidana on a cold Winter's Night?!?!? Here's my money! That PPV will do just fine.
Dan Rafael (2:28 PM)
Plus two other tv fights.
Steveball (Concord CA)
Is HBO planning a cofeature for 11/16 or just the Ward fight?
Dan Rafael (2:29 PM)
There is supposed to be a second fight on the card but it is not determined yet.
Matt (Boston)
What about a Robert Guerrero - Canelo fight?
Dan Rafael (2:29 PM)
Why?
Gino (The Bronx)
Dan, in retrospect do you think boxing writers will still consider TheOne one of the best PPV cards ever?
Dan Rafael (2:32 PM)
No. It when only two of the four PPV fights are worthwhile you cant be the best PPV card of all time. It had two A+ fights on it and two C at best fights on it. I never bought into the "best PPV card of all time stuff anyway."
Myron (Atlanta, GA)
kelly pavlik rapping, wow. is that the banishment basement he's sitting in??? is that what's going on down there?
Dan Rafael (2:33 PM)
LOL!!!
V (CA)
What is the best PPV card ever?
Dan Rafael (2:34 PM)
Revenge The Rematches.
Matt (Preston, UK)
Dan, I seem to be in the minority to think Cloud will get the win. I think he's too fast for Stevenson. Am I crazy?
Dan Rafael (2:37 PM)
Maybe he will win but it wont be on speed. Cloud is not that fast and neither is Stevenson.
Brooks (New Hampshire)
Happy Friday Dan - Anything in the works for Bryant Jennings and Antonio DeMarco?
Dan Rafael (2:38 PM)
Jennings no, he is sitting out for the time being apparently waiting for a pile of money to fall from the heavens that does not exist. DeMarco just fought a few weeks ago in Mexico.
Dan Rafael (2:39 PM)
Thanks for chatting Fight Freaks! Hope you check out all of the coverage of this weekend's fights and the blogs as well. Enjoy the fights tomorrow and have a great weekend. Talk to you next week from Orlando, Fla., where I will be covering Cotto-Rodriguez. Peace.
