Brian Campbell (2:02 PM)
Get some! It's the Tuesday Boxing Chat and we are in the midst of one heck of a 2013, including a fall schedule to die for. We have plenty to talk about after Saturday's victories for Adonis Stevenson and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., along with this weekend's bouts involving Miguel Cotto and Wlad Klitschko. As always, the floor is yours. Just ... bring ... it!
Julian (Dallas/TX)
BC, how does one not assume there are suspicious behind the scene's politics, after everything that happened leading up to and at the conclusion of the Chaves Jr./Vera fight?
Brian Campbell (2:04 PM)
What else can you say, Jules? Granted, Saturday's fight was a lot closer than people are making it out to be. This wasn't a complete and thorough whitewashing by Vera. Yet, for someone to actually score that fight 98-92 for Chavez is a travesty. The other two scorecards weren't much better. I think, all in all, Chavez Jr.'s brand took a big hit from this entire debacle. Yes, the cable TV numbers were still HUGE. But he might have gone from being a derisive figure to being outright hated.
Paul (Concord, CA)
BC, unfortunately, being a fighter doesn't necessarily make a person a man. JCC, Jr. first should have come in at weight and secondly should have admitted to the fans that he was bested that night.
Brian Campbell (2:05 PM)
His arrogance is really something, right? I have to admit, I was laughing during his postfight comments. That guy is quite the character.
Sam Suska (Pittsburgh)
Since we all love mythical matchups I'd like to know how you feel the present junior middleweight version of Floyd Mayweather matches up against Mike McCallum (my personal favorite fighter). I think the Body Snatcher establishes his jab early, cuts the ring off effectively and outworks Floyd at the mid-range distance to win by UD. How do you see it?
Brian Campbell (2:07 PM)
You make a strong case for McCallum there, don't you? However, I just don't see even him, as tough of an out as anyone at 154, being able to stay with Floyd's combo of speed and elusiveness.
Vimel (LA)
Stevenson vs. Kovalev, llllleeeegoooo!!!
Brian Campbell (2:08 PM)
This may be the only fight where I give you outright permission to slam your head against a plate glass mirror minutes before the opening bell. I mean, how else can you keep that kind of excitement inside of you as it begins to bubble up. You want to know my analysis of that fight should it happen: Bombs away!
Quinn (Pittsburgh)
I was thinking of your tweet earlier about if the Cold War ended. It got me thinking that the fight I want the most right now is makeable: GGG-Ward
Brian Campbell (2:09 PM)
Great call Mighty Quinn. Seriously, that fight is as good as it gets in boxing, provided that Golovkin is everything we think he is. Fast forward a bit and if GGG can start really scaling the P4P ladder with each victory at 160, that thing is going to be hot. It's just a tremendous style fight between two top-level practitioners.
Al (York Pa)
Brian these chats great as they are will not help the Government shutdown at all. You are doing your part.
Brian Campbell (2:10 PM)
I appreciate your support, Al.
@WillyBeamon26 (Sonoma County)
thought i was going to have questions to ask... i dont ... i'll watch.. lol
Brian Campbell (2:10 PM)
Always a pleasure to have you, Willy B. Voyeurism is accepted here. (Although, it did feel really weird typing that last sentence like that.)
Kevin (Miami)
B-Camp! JCC Jr was so disappointing the other night. Except that rad t-shirt he came to the ring in! He looked slower than normal/kind of flabby/and post RD 7 he was gassed. Everyone of name at 168 would dismantle him. Where do you see him going from here?
Brian Campbell (2:13 PM)
Overall, I don't think Chavez did much in the ring to help his stock. Sure, you can give him credit for his accuracy when he altered his style and concocted more of a one shot at a time attack. But you have to chock a lot of it up to ring rust and being so out of shape. He's never going to lose that name, right? And with that gives him opportunities to get himself into big fights time and again. He also has the two things you can't teach: power and an iron chin. As long as he gets himself back into shape, he will have plenty of options at 168. Could you even imagine how much fun a shot at Froch would be?
jay new Orleans [via mobile]
Hurry up brain
Brian Campbell (2:13 PM)
Will do, Jerry.
Vimel (LA)
Brian, why wouldn't junior want to fight a rematch? He made 2.5 million for this fight and he would probably make that or more for a rematch he would most likely win if he came in well conditioned.
Brian Campbell (2:14 PM)
Probably because to him, this was just a fight to shake off the rust and get back into the win column. You get the picture a guy like JCC Jr. doesn't care much whether the public thought he had lost. This guy plays the spoiled villain role perfectly in that way. He wants the big names and the even bigger paychecks and that's likely where we will see him.
joe (nh)
do you think b-Hop can make 160 LOL.
Brian Campbell (2:16 PM)
Not a chance in my mind. He told me after the second fight with Pascal that even trying to get down to 170 for a big catch weight fight against someone wasn't a guarantee and that he would really have to try it out first before committing. Now, we know what kind of competitor BHop is. If this guy thinks he has even a chance at getting Floyd into the ring you know he'd do anything. But 160 doesn't sound even remotely plausible for a guy who is 48. Let's be real.
Uncle Drew (Ohio)
Brian can you confirm Amir Khan vs Money or is it just rumors
Brian Campbell (2:18 PM)
Just rumors from what I have heard so far. But if you are Khan and you have a chance to wiggle out of an Alexander fight before signing your name on the contract, wouldn't you do it? You only get so many chances in a career to not only fight the best the sport has to offer, but to do so for the largest amount of money you will ever make. And unlike a lot of other fighters, Khan can't afford a loss. He is Floyd's best option right now in every sense of the word. I don't see why these rumors can't end up becoming reality.
joel (whittier ,ca) [via mobile]
Brian did yiu watch marquez bradley 24/7? If so what did you think
Brian Campbell (2:19 PM)
I absolutely loved the first episode. They did an excellent job. And you already know how I feel about this fight so watching that only got the juices flowing inside of me even more. This is a 50/50 fight between two Top 10 P4P guys. There is a TON on the line and both aren't afraid to go to war. This is as good as it gest.
Michael (Cincinnati)
Before we get Golovkin/Ward, must we endure JCC/Ward first?
Brian Campbell (2:20 PM)
I would think one of Golovkin and Ward would get Chavez before the two actually fought each other. If I had to make a prediction, I would say Ward ends up with Chavez and GGG ends up with Martinez first.
Julian (Dallas/TX)
Did I miss something, I am hearing rumors of Alexander/Judah which makes no sense whatsoever, please tell me you have NOT been hearing these rumors as well?
Brian Campbell (2:20 PM)
I've seen those bouncing around the old social media machine. I don't hate it, although I know many will.
David (Oak Brook)
Definitly not doin any work till this chat is over, thanks Brian
Brian Campbell (2:21 PM)
Yeah! Take that corporate America!
Dave (Worcester, MA)
Do you think the cartoonish WWE heel-type character that JCC jr is morphing into is a calculated marketing ploy to some degree?
Brian Campbell (2:22 PM)
Normally I would say yes. But man there's just something about Junior that leads you to believe this is real.
Alan (Los Angeles, CA)
If Soto Karass gets passed Keith Thurman does that put him in the Mayweather mix?
Brian Campbell (2:23 PM)
I wouldn't bet on it. If JSK didn't get Mayweather after doing what every other fighter of late to face Floyd has done -- which is by defeating Berto -- than I don't see him getting the call without doing a lot more than that first.
Cain (Tempe)
Brian, With so many bogus outcomes due to blind judges it amazes me that I don't recall a boxer ever saying, yea I got my butt whooped and I lost tonight. Its always yea I thought I won the fight.
Brian Campbell (2:25 PM)
Well, it's pretty smart if you think about it from a marketing standpoint to help carry the illusion that you were robbed. But I also think fighters have a hard time realizing they lost while in the heat of battle.
KT (Tennessee)
Hey, Brian. Who do you think had more hype and promise going into their respective megafights? JCC,Jr. at 46-0-1 before his fight with Martinez or Canelo at 42-0-1 before his fight with Mayweather?
Brian Campbell (2:27 PM)
A very interesting question from our resident historian, KT. I would say that Canelo had more promise in the sense that people believed he was slightly more "for real" than Chavez. Now, with that said, I think more people felt Chavez had a chance to win that fight than felt Canelo did. Stop me if none of this makes sense.
Ben (Detroit)
Superman, Superman, Superman
Brian Campbell (2:28 PM)
Yeah, did it really take 27 minutes for someone to bring up Adonis Stevenson's performance on Saturday? Let me be the first to say that he had more in that arsenal than we thought he had. But, at the same time, this guy Cloud looks like he's about done at the highest level. I was far from impressed.
Ed (PA)
Can you confirm you are shadowboxing for Kovalev-Adonis?
Brian Campbell (2:29 PM)
Absolutely. I know I've used this joke up already, but you could catch a concussion from ringside during that fight. It's going to literally be that good if it comes off.
Pennywise the Clown (Your Dreams)
BC--you're walking down a dark street and suddenly attacked. You're able to have any fighter, current or past back you up...who gets the call and why?? **BEEP BEEP**
Brian Campbell (2:30 PM)
I can't decide whether I want the 1988 version of Mike Tyson for his speed and explosion or the post-jail version of Tyson for his nastiness and intimidation skills.
Willy (BK)
As far as your no Cold War hypothetical goes, I'm sure most freaks wouldn't mind seeing Garcia or Matthysse vs. either Pac/Rios winner or Bradley/Marquez winner (or even the Alvarado/Prov winner). How about Bhop vs. GGG, given Nard's history of spoiling the rise of undefeated killers?
Brian Campbell (2:31 PM)
Agreed. Could you even imagine a legit tournament right now for the best guys floating in that 140-147 bubble? That would be amazing.
David (Oak Brook)
Do you think Freddie Roach can really help Cotto out this late in his career?
Brian Campbell (2:33 PM)
It makes for an interesting storyline entering this Saturday's Cotto-Rodriguez fight but, all in all, I don't think it will make much of a difference. I think Cotto had his last stand in the Mayweather fight in terms of him being able to hang on the very highest level. Can he still give us a strong effort against either a lesser fighter (like Rodriguez) or in future high-end bouts (think Canelo or maybe even Sergio)? Sure. But I don't think there will be too much change in style outside of maybe a recommitment to the body. And while I'm on the record, I liked the version of Miguel we saw in his three fights with Pedro Diaz. I'm still mildly surprised by the switch.
Dave (Worcester, MA)
What do you think Chavez's best fight was- Andy Lee? He looked focused and in shape for the that fight, though he was massively larger than Lee. IF he fights like that that again could you see him taking the WBC title of Bika though possibly though dodging scoring?
Brian Campbell (2:35 PM)
Interesting call, Dave. I thought we saw the best version of JCC Jr. in terms of his boxing in the Manfredo fight. But you could make the argument that he was at his best against Lee. Chavez was down early in that fight but made some adjustments, although his ability to force Andy into a brawl is really what won it for him. Yes, I could see him beating Bika. No question. It would be a fun fight, however, but I think an in-shape Chavez is a better fighter.
Tito (Brooklyn) [via mobile]
Hey Soup!!!! I just wanted to say that I appreciate the time you take out to chat with us Fight Freaks!!! I wanna be like you when I grow up!!!! Lol!!!!
Brian Campbell (2:35 PM)
This guy Tito, haha. Many thanks my good man.
Chuy (Detroit, MI)
Brian my boss and I got into a debate on who Canelo should fight next, he thinks he should fight Molina and go for his championship, I believe that he shoud fight a tougher fighter in Cotto (it would do great ppv numbers).Who do you think Canelo should fight next?
Brian Campbell (2:38 PM)
His best option in my mind is getting the PPV date with Cotto. I think nine months ago that fight lost some luster with Cotto suffering his second consecutive defeat and most believing Canelo would steamroll him now. Now, with Alvarez having looked so poor in the Mayweather fight, I think it opens the door back up for Cotto-Canelo to be huge again. And I think, just as I did before, that it would be a real competitive fight. With Cotto's uncertainty in terms of how much longer he can go against the best, I think Canelo should go after that now, even above grabbing a belt back at 154 first.
Smitty (Beaver Falls Pa)
Brian have you actually ever sparred or boxed in your life?
Brian Campbell (2:40 PM)
Yes, I sparred pretty regularly about eight years ago and I really credit that period for taking my fandom, which was already high, to an even greater level. That is what set the stage for me to become a boxing writer and really chase this dream of mine. After that, marriage, fatherhood and career has gotten in the way a bit. But good news: My wife bought me a membership to a local boxing gym for my birthday. So I'm going to make a comeback.
Brandon (San Diego)
BC, who would you take in a Superman-Kovalev fight?
Brian Campbell (2:41 PM)
It's really tough to call this far out. I think Stevenson really raised the ante with his performance on Saturday, though. But I have to hold my pick until we get closer and I think about it more.
Peter (NYC)
Brian, IMO it's crucial for Danny Garcia to learn spanish if he wants to have a massive following. He plays the spanish card but the fact is he doesn't speak any spanish. Oscar De La Hoya never becomes the "Golden Boy" with only speaking english.
Brian Campbell (2:41 PM)
That's an interesting point, Peter. I know Danny has a little bit of Spanish under his belt, but he's far from fluent. It definitely couldn't hurt him.
Brent (Detroit)
BC, What would you say was a more daring, risky and Friend-worthy effort. The gang throwing Screech a Birthday Party in Belding's office or throwing Zach a Birthday Party at the Malibu Sands after business hours? (My boxing talk stinks today so I have to resort to the cheap stuff to get in)
Brian Campbell (2:43 PM)
I'm always willing to resort to cheap stuff, so no worries. I think clearly you have to look at the risk involved in throwing a party inside the principal's office in the middle of the day. The amount of risk involved second by second and minute by minute was off the charts. And I still don't know how they were able to hide those decorations without Belding seeing and breaking out a, "Hey, hey hey ... what is going on here?"
Cain (Tempe)
LOL...Post jail for sure, Tyson would eat your ears and your kids...
Brian Campbell (2:44 PM)
You ain't lying. How could you pick anyone else to get your back in an alley?
Steve (NYC)
What is your prediction for Klitschko-Povetkin?
Brian Campbell (2:45 PM)
Povetkin really has all the tools that a Klitschko opponent would want. I just don't think he has that extra gear to put it all together and really give Wlad a run in this fight. In fact, I think there's more potential for him to come in and lay a huge egg and get blown out early. I pick Klitschko by TKO-8.
Chris (Brooklyn)
Who would you like to see Floyd Mayweather fight next?
Brian Campbell (2:47 PM)
I don't hate on him picking Khan next. Given the current realistic options, I can get behind that fight. It would still be a decent event, even with the fact that you wouldn't be able to find anyone picking Khan. But just the same, Amir's offensive skillset would give Floyd a different look than really anyone else has in recent years. Even with a Floyd knockout likely late in that bout, Khan brings a big fan base and isn't the fighter who will just follow Floyd around and aimlessly swing at him. It would be fun for a handful of rounds.
Brian Campbell (2:48 PM)
But if you are sincerely asking who I would want Floyd to face next considering legitimate opponents available, my list looks like this: 1) Adrien Broner, 2) Peter Quillin and 3) Keith Thurman.
Martin (CT)
Who do you got in the Broner-Maidana fight?
Brian Campbell (2:49 PM)
Broner by late stoppage. I think his technique will be way too much for Marcos to handle. I know everyone will say: "How are you picking a late stoppage when he couldn't even finish Paulie?" I just think Maidana's constant pressure will pull more out of Broner than Malignaggi was able to do. I think his lack of punching power allowed AB to be lazy in that fight and do just enough to win while talking trash.
jeremy (dallas)
Molina's fights are hard to watch...actually stunned they awarded him a title. I kind of hope Canelo would hammer him out of the way with his ugly, mauling, barely punching except with head butts atyle.
Brian Campbell (2:50 PM)
Molina is also difficult, though, and can really give anyone a tough fight. Besides the title available to him, there isn't a ton of upside in Canelo taking that fight right now. If a fight with Cotto can't be made, I'd much rather try and rebuild Canelo's confidence and put him into a winnable action fight against a guy like Angulo, if I was calling the shots.
Derek (Brooklyn)
So if it is Floyd-Khan is there a chance the fight happens in the UK? I think that helps the promotion tremendously
Brian Campbell (2:51 PM)
I think bringing it to England would undoubtedly help that promotion in huge ways. However, I don't have confidence you will ever see Floyd fight again outside the walls of the MGM Grand. If I had to make any bet, I would lead with that one.
Tommy (Detroit)
I think Zach throwing a 50 anniversary AND a sweet 16 at The Malibu Sands was the more risky event. That one could've had an epic backfire. Those zany kids.
Brian Campbell (2:52 PM)
Good point, Tommy. But the in-office party really came down to timing and luck and he pulled it off perfectly. Too bad he didn't have the same luck with that whole video yearbook debacle when he made all those video dating tapes.
Chris (NYC)
Hey BC, any prediction for a breakdown of the crowd in terms of favorite, JMM or Bradley? Will there be a significant swing one way or another?
Brian Campbell (2:52 PM)
All Marquez, all the time, Brah.
Cain (Tempe)
Brian, If Cotto wins in fashion what are chances we see him face Money? To this point it still seems he is only one who seemed to get close to beating Mayweather (well kind of) and w Roach in his corner should be very interesting. How great would that be to see Cotto pull that off man after everything he been through. No one deserves it more than Cotto.
Brian Campbell (2:56 PM)
I am completely on board with your point and have said it in the past. If there is any fighter out there who is one big win away from getting a Mayweather bout, it's clearly Cotto. Their first fight sold 1.5M PPV buys which is really HUGE if you look at the short list of bouts that have sold more. You have to believe Floyd is secretly hoping for not only a Cotto-Canelo bout, but a Miguel victory in order to produce a legitimately bankable opponent for himself when, right now, there really isn't one on that level.
Ryan (Ohio )
Think we will ever see the Berto Vs Ortiz rematch, I would still be interested
Brian Campbell (2:57 PM)
I really hope so. Between that fight and similar rematches with Maidana and Lopez, a guy like Ortiz has countless options for marketable fights should he ever get serious again about boxing. And, to my point earlier about Cotto, Ortiz is also on that shortlist of guys who really only need one big-time win to get themselves another Mayweather fight. As crazy as that sounds, Mayweather-Ortiz II has the built-in storyline that would move product.
Davis (Boston )
How likely do you think a Chavez Jr.-B-Hop fight could happen? what do you think of the matchup?
Brian Campbell (2:58 PM)
It's really pointless to even bring the fight up when it has absolutely no chance of happening under the current Cold War landscape. With that said, I LOVE it and think it would be a very creative matchup that would sell a small, yet solid of PPVs.
joel (whittier ,ca) [via mobile]
You ready to make your pick yet marquez or bradley? Man up brian lol!!!
Brian Campbell (3:00 PM)
Big-time news out of this Marquez-Bradley thing. You guys know how much I've been struggling with this fight. This thing has 50/50 written all over it. But I sat long and hard last night and really went over the matchup from every angle and I finally have a firm prediction. You'll see me roll this thing out next week in our preview content for the fight.
Vimel (LA)
"Ain't no 40 year old gonna whoop my ass". Classic line from Bradley!
Brian Campbell (3:01 PM)
Haha. I laughed out loud at that one, too.
Corey (Westwick)
If they can't get a shot at Floyd I would like to see Devon Alexander vs Danny Garica that would be a good fight and a real pick em fight
Brian Campbell (3:03 PM)
I have to agree with you on that. As much as Alexander gets a bad rap at times (and anyone who saw his victory over Randall Bailey has full right to hold that opinion) he's a difficult out and brings plenty of skill to the table. I like what I saw out of Devon in terms of the pace and aggressiveness he portrayed in his May victory over Lee Purdy. I think he's a fighter who realizes that if he doesn't adopt a more crowd-pleasing style than he simply won't find himself in cable TV main events. I would really enjoy seeing how a fight like Garcia-Alexander plays out.
Cain (Tempe)
Brian, Do you think JMM was juiced up in his last Pacman fight?
Brian Campbell (3:03 PM)
Am I under oath?
Brent (Detroit)
Tougher out for Floyd mythically: Winky at 154 or Forrest at 147?
Brian Campbell (3:04 PM)
Winky. Ask my fellow boxing scribe and main man Adam Abramowitz from Saturday Night Boxing about that matchup. He's not picking Floyd.
jgines pr [via mobile]
Big Brian, Bradley vs Marquez is gonna be all out WAR, I like Marquez by ko, your thoughts?
Brian Campbell (3:04 PM)
My only prediction right now is Fight of the Year. How's that?
Davis (Cincinnati)
Hey BC, who's better in their prime De La Soul or Tribe Called Quest?
Brian Campbell (3:05 PM)
Oh come on man. Tribe all day. Do you realize how many times each day I make "Low End Theory" references and people look at me like I'm crazy?
Brent (Detroit)
I think Danny has a great chance of stopping Devon. Alexander is talented but has been matched very well and will always have that shred of doubt behind him after how easily he surrendered to the headbutt cuts Bradly gave him. I think Danny takes Alexander into Deep Waters and could stop him.
Brian Campbell (3:06 PM)
It is the perfect setup for Danny to, once again, defy our expectations and outlast another tough opponent. And, yes, Devon did himself zero favors by bowing out against Bradley in an already dreadful fight.
Julian (Dallas/TX)
Have you heard BC that Povetkin has asked Chisora to be apart of his team on fight night just to monitor Klitschko's lacing of the gloves, what do you think about that?
Brian Campbell (3:08 PM)
I haven't heard that but it's a heck of a wrinkle to add to the drama of the fight.
jgines pr [via mobile]
Hey BC how impressed are you with Stevenson outboxing the boxer Cloud?
Brian Campbell (3:08 PM)
Hugely impressed. There is no question about it. We know Adonis has the power that you can't teach and he's plenty confident in there. But to see the rounded-out game developing right now is huge. Business just picked up at 175.
clay (chattanooga)
Broner-Bradley. I know there are tons of other fights that are good too, but when i saw your twitter post earlier for some reason this was a fight that popped into my head quickly. whatta ya think soup?
Brian Campbell (3:10 PM)
Oh man, you know I love this fight. Look, I love any fight involving Bradley because you know the guy is going to go for it and give you everything he has. That right there ups the ante on any big-time fight.
Vimel (LA)
Dare I ask, who would you pick, Garcia or Alexander?
Brian Campbell (3:10 PM)
You're setting me up to pick against Danny, once again. I know you, Vimel. You're tricky like that.
Kherby (City of Angels) [via mobile]
Cannot believe as Stevenson started boxing at 29. Have you ever seen another boxer start that late
Brian Campbell (3:10 PM)
Some guy named Hopkins.
Greg (Lexington KY)
Any other fighters you had high hopes for that disappeared? I was big on Bojado.
Brian Campbell (3:11 PM)
There used to be this heavyweight named David Price ...
Kherby (City of Angels) [via mobile]
I like watching Devon and his skill is undeniable. But i'm done betting against Garcia. Great match up, whoever said it first
Brian Campbell (3:11 PM)
Yes and yes.
Tmac (GA)
So do you think its pretty obvious Ward was thinking about his own bank account with all the praise he was giving Jr Saturday?
Brian Campbell (3:11 PM)
I cannot tell a lie. I agree with everything you just said.
Nick (DC)
Was there ever a bigger dissapointment than Riddick Bowe?
Brian Campbell (3:13 PM)
I'd say there were bigger disappointments from guys who were destined for greatness, yet never got over the hump due to their own failures. Bowe is different because he did get a chance to show how great he really was in that short period that he was unbeaten and on top. It was only after that he threw it all away before finding himself legitimately shot at age 28.
Brent (Detroit)
Well Bowe was a huge dissapointment for the long hall but he did reach his full potential if it was only for 12 of the most beautiful rounds in boxing history.
Brian Campbell (3:14 PM)
Well said, Brent. I recently reworked my Top 5 favorite fights in history list and that one, Bowe-Holyfield I, was No. 3.
Julian (Dallas/TX)
Don't break my heart BC, who would you pick in a Garcia/Matthysse 2?
Brian Campbell (3:14 PM)
Oh I think you already know the answer to that one, Jules.
David (Oak Brook)
haha David Price, that question must of been a set up
Brian Campbell (3:15 PM)
Hey, if you are going to throw the lob, I'm going to dunk it.
David (Oak Brook)
From all the fighters that have held commentating positions: who do you think has done the best job?
Brian Campbell (3:15 PM)
George Foreman and Paulie Malignaggi.
Scott (Vegas)
Mythical matchup: Ricky Hatton vs. Kahn?
Brian Campbell (3:16 PM)
That's a fun thought to throw around. Could you imagine the version of Hatton who defeated Tszyu against the 140 version of Khan that knocked out Judah? Khan was more skilled but I would have to favor Hatton's pressure.
David (Oak Brook)
As a Polish person Golota dissapointed me plenty of times
Brian Campbell (3:16 PM)
That guy has disappointed plenty of nationalities and creeds.
Denny (Denver)
Audley Harrison has got to rank high on the list of disappointments. Probably the worst gold medalist I've seen.
Brian Campbell (3:17 PM)
No doubt about it.
Bill (Northern Michigan)
Biggest dissapointment Andre Berto...wasn't this suppossed to be the guy to dethrone Mayweather?
Brian Campbell (3:17 PM)
I wouldn't go that far, but clearly he failed to improve after originally winning a world title and began a hand-picked, slow fade.
Keith H (Seattle)
I think B-Hop finds a way conveniently retire before facing Superman.
Brian Campbell (3:17 PM)
No chance that fight happens under in the current Cold War climate.
Paul (Concord, CA)
BC, did you have Bradley over Pacquiao?
Brian Campbell (3:18 PM)
I think Brian Kenny, Thomas Hauser and Tim Bradley were the only three people other than the judges who believe Pacquiao lost on that night.
clay (chattanooga)
BC, do you think we are stuck with Ward commentating on HBO for the long haul? just not a fan of his on commentary...AT ALL!
Brian Campbell (3:19 PM)
Not sure what their plans are in terms of network personnel, but I have to agree that I'm not a huge fan of Ward behind the mic. I'd much rather watch him perform in the ring.
Frank (Ocean City MD)
You meant Roy Jones & Lennox Lewis right??
Brian Campbell (3:21 PM)
Um ... no. Although, we need to be fair on Roy, who has had his moments as a commentator. Yes, he's been as bad as he's been good, but I think that period immediately following his May 2011 KO loss to Denis Lebedev (for whatever reason) produced his strongest stretch as a commentator. That period is over now, however. But I also think Roy had stretches while still a dominate fighter where he was pretty strong as an analyst.
Randy "The Macho Man" (NYC)
Soup, Prime Pavlik vs Prime Froch... who you got
Brian Campbell (3:21 PM)
Prime Froch. And btw, I think this version right now is Prime Froch.
David (Oak Brook)
Do you think Klitschkos would be this good if they faught in the 90's?
Brian Campbell (3:21 PM)
No way.
Jared (Indy)
Hey Brian, best nick name ever in boxing? For some reason I always liked Chop Chop.
Brian Campbell (3:22 PM)
That was a great one. But can anyone really do any better than Juan "The Hispanic Causing Panic" Lazcano?
Roy P (Texas) [via mobile]
I didn't see any tweets from you after the Chavez vs Vera fight, you usually give us your score, why was this? Did you not get to watch the flight?
Brian Campbell (3:22 PM)
I was at a wedding and was only able to catch the last four rounds live. I then watched the whole fight again later on DVR.
Jon (Columbia,SC)
Do you consider Naseem Hamed's career one of the biggest disappointments?
Brian Campbell (3:23 PM)
Again, hard to call a guy like that a disappointment when he accomplished so much and was such a showman. So, no. But clearly I would have loved to have seen him fight Marquez and Morales and also carry on after the Barrera defeat.
Davis (Boston)
Dan Rafael had picked Bradley to win.
Brian Campbell (3:23 PM)
He did. But he also had Pacquiao rightfully winning by a comfortable margin.
Peter (NYC)
Darnell "The Ding-a-Ling Man" Wilson
Brian Campbell (3:24 PM)
That was a GREAT one, yes.
Josh B (Canmore, AB)
Seriously, besides Pac- Mayweather, what other fights would you like to have seen happen? Fights that should have been made, but never came off. My vote is for John Ruiz vs Vaughn Bean./That would have been one for the ages!!!!!
Brian Campbell (3:25 PM)
Man that's a gross thought. The only two fights on my personal list that I'm more angry about than Mayweather-Pacquiao are Bowe-Lewis and Trinidad-De La Hoya II. And even though this fight wasn't nearly on that level, I'm still angry we never got Taylor-Wright II.
Keith H (Seattle)
I'm partial to Swamp Donkey...
Brian Campbell (3:25 PM)
Another classic nickname. No question.
Brent (Detroit)
I was always a fan of "Gentleman" Glen Johnson
T-Bone (Philly)
Ken "Black Hercules" Norton
Chuck (Newrak, NJ)
Azumah "The Professor" Nelson
Sean (White)
WHile I know it won't happen anytime soon, if ever at all, Can you Imagine how HUGE Canelo vs Chavez would be in light of recent Viewership numbers?
Brian Campbell (3:26 PM)
I think television sets in Mexico would explode.
Mike (ny)
Who was a worse fighter to watch. Vaughn Bean or John Ruiz?
Brian Campbell (3:27 PM)
No one comes close to Ruiz.
Corey (Westwick)
The two biggest disappointments at heavyweight in the last 15yrs got to be Andrew Golata and the 2nd guy was Jameel Mc cline. I thought both men would be contenders to the throne
Brian Campbell (3:27 PM)
Golota was a huge disappointment, no question. I never thought McCline was a guy who would ever really get over the hump, but I do agree he had Sam Peter ready to go in a fight in a title fight Jameel was dominating but just couldn't get him out of there.
Chris (Stillwater, OK)
Can you think of any one person you wanted to see beaten up more than that guy Jeff who worked at the Maxx?
Brian Campbell (3:29 PM)
No one. Ever. Although I also think that environmental nerd Graham got off WAY too easy by Slater in the "Senior Cut Day" episode when he was trying to get with Jessie all day during their protest against styrofoam cups in the cafetaria. Now, granted, Slater was trying to secure his own side deal at the time with Kelly at the bumper pool table at the Max (and later at the beach). But still, this guy Slater should have at least given him the same belly-to-belly suplex treatment that he gave Zack during their epic fight.
joe (long island )
andre ward vs adonis stevenson at 168 and i would like to see mayweather fight a tall boxer who could match his footwork and jab with him i think it could make for a interesting matchup somone like trout
Brian Campbell (3:30 PM)
I, too, would like to see Floyd face a guy like Trout but I don't think we see it.
Big Dude (DC)
If Kovalev fights Stevenson, does he change his nickname from Krusher to Kryptonite?
Brian Campbell (3:30 PM)
Oooooh. That's pretty brilliant. Well done.
Randy "The Macho Man" (NYC)
Bradley seems like a good dude and obviously he isn't going to walk around saying he lost to Pac, but during 24/7 when he was saying "all we do is win" I kind of lost respect for him. Pac ran over him and Prov. knocked his speech out of his head for 2 months... that's why people are picking JMM
Brian Campbell (3:30 PM)
This guy Savage is pulling no punches.
Davis (Boston)
Is there any chance that Joshua Clottey will be relevant again?
Brian Campbell (3:32 PM)
Don't put your money on it.
Sean (From The Bronx)
Being That Golden Boy has the 140 - 147 market corner, what lies ahead for the winner of Marquez vs Bradley?
Brian Campbell (3:32 PM)
The winner of Marquez-Bradley would have plenty of options in that round-robin tournament of death that Top Rank is currently unrolling with the likes of Rios, Alvarado and Provodnikov.
Chuck (Newark, NJ)
Ike "The President" Ibeabuchi was headed for gretaness until he went to prison. Remember him? Straight Beast!
Brian Campbell (3:33 PM)
Oh yeah. I was a HUGE Ike guy. Maybe I still am, actually. Considering how bad the division became almost directly after Ike went away, it's always interesting to wonder what would have happened.
Randy "The Macho Man" (NYC)
Umm... hasn't Mayweather already fought a tall guy in Corrales and knocked him around the ring?
Brian Campbell (3:34 PM)
Good point. And it's not like anyone would pick Trout to defeat Mayweather. I just think it would be a compelling matchup given the kinds of straight ahead fighters Mayweather has feasted on in recent years.
Uncle Drew (Ohio)
Brian are you on the Money Team
Brian Campbell (3:34 PM)
I am not currently on the payroll, no.
Derek (Brooklyn)
How do you think Paul Williams would have fared vs Floyd? His defense was never great but his high work rate and physical tools were impressive, do you think he would have given Floyd problems?
Brian Campbell (3:35 PM)
That's basically the one matchup that makes me wonder the most. Give me the version of Williams who defeated Margarito in July 2007 and I want to see what Floyd does with that kind of length and activity in front of him. It would have been interesting.
Hank (Dublin OH)
Love some Tribe! BC, I think Keith Thurman could slowly take over welterweight. Any take?
Brian Campbell (3:37 PM)
I'll say this about Thurman: Every single fight he impresses me more. I hesitate to put a ceiling on his potential because he's proving he can box a bit and he appears to have top-end power. He's also a tremendous quote. If he can advance quickly, how could you not want to see him against guys like Broner, Mayweather, Canelo, etc.?
clay (chattanooga)
that a "Check the Rhyme" reference...things just got real in the Tues boxing chat! haha
Brian Campbell (3:37 PM)
"Here's a funky introduction of how nice I am. Tell your mother, tell your father, send a telegram ..."
Brent (Detroit)
I'm with you Hank. Keith Thurman will be ahead of Broner in the Boxing Pecking Order of tomorrow!
Brian Campbell (3:38 PM)
It's still in "wait and see" mode. But he's an interesting prospect who probably doesn't get the attention he deserves considering how crowded things are at GB between 140-147 pounds.
David (Oak Brook)
Do you think Margarito would have been able to beat Floyd if he used the plaster?
Brian Campbell (3:39 PM)
No. But that doesn't mean I don't wish we could have seen a prime, post-Cotto Margarito get a chance at Floyd back during that time when Mayweather was "retired."
clay (chattanooga)
WOW...just wow! sitting here cracking up at my desk! definitely getting some interesting looks.
Jackie (Spring Lake NC)
Next you'll be telling us you left your wallet in El Segundo
Brian Campbell (3:39 PM)
Well done.
Jimmy (Arlington, Va)
Hey Brian, do you think HBO do everything in its power to keep Cotto under its umbrella if he wins on Saturday, or is there just too much money involved in Canelo clash to enable an HBO one off appearance?
Brian Campbell (3:40 PM)
I think they used Cotto this time around for the ratings they will get with him as their headliner. Obviously there is hope on their end they can get him back again, but I'm sure they realize that Miguel has positioned himself perfectly right now. He is going to go where the biggest fight is for the most amount of money.
drew (nj)
back in the day when i was a teenager, before i had status and before i had a pager...
Brian Campbell (3:41 PM)
If I had a nickel for every time I've used that line at work in the past five years, the amount of money I would have would trump the amount of dumbfounded looks I have received.
Mickey (Chicago)
Ok so...Tribe or Wu-Tang?
Brian Campbell (3:42 PM)
No Wu for me. Just Tribe. And old school PE. Then grunge and the Jerky Boys hit at around the same time and I went along for the ride on both.
David (Oak Brook)
Do you think this version of MArquez would have done better against Flloyd?
Brian Campbell (3:43 PM)
It's an interesting question to ponder, isn't it, and one we've thrown around here in the past. Clearly I think he would do better as his size can't be ignored, nor can the fact that he was able to keep a distinct level of speed and reaction time despite the bulk. But I still see Floyd coming away with a clear decision win. I just wonder if he would have taken a few shots along the way to get there.
Grigor (Los Angeles )
Please i like to get you opinion! Do u think Vanes is long overdue for a title and why is he underrated. He is an American Olympian, an interesting fighter and undefeated but we hardly hear about him...
Brian Campbell (3:44 PM)
I like Vanes and I think the jury is still out regarding how good he really is. I think overall he could benefit from staying busier, both on the schedule and inside the ring.
Edwin (Dayton)
Going back a bit here: Run DMC or Beastie Boys?
Brian Campbell (3:45 PM)
Definitely stronger on the Beastie Boys, but I'm not huge on either. But with that said, there was a period after "Check Your Head" came out that my mind was blown for about a full month.
Mr. Rodriguez (Danbury CT)
How much of a shot do you given Delvin in a phone booth?
Brian Campbell (3:46 PM)
I like Delvin and think he puts on great fights. So I give him a real good shot at staying competitive and making Saturday's fight entertaining. But I think Cotto would really have to have lost a great deal of his punch resistance in order for Delvin to get the upperhand and win enough rounds to pull the upset.
Jackie (Spring Lake NC)
No qusations from Bonita Applebaum you gotta put her on
tmt (nyc)
ward stevenson who do you got
Brian Campbell (3:47 PM)
It's really hard not to favor Ward until he gives us reason not to. But with that said, outside of maybe a GGG fight, Stevenson could prove to be the best opponent out there for Ward in terms of someone giving him a great fight.
Kherby (City of Angels) [via mobile]
I'm sad phife never got the mainstream exposure like tip. I always thought he was the better rapper
Brian Campbell (3:49 PM)
I can definitely respect that thought, although I've always been a bigger Tip guy (even through his "Kamal The Abstract" run). I've also been enjoying Phife's contributions on that "NB90's" show on NBA TV. Great stuff.
AJ (DC)
Delvin cuts his opponents. Cotto cuts easily these days.
Brian Campbell (3:50 PM)
That is a strong point right there in Delvin's favor. It would take a major plot turn like that to keep him in it, in my regard. I just think Miguel is too strong of a boxer to need to stand in a phone booth with him. But then again, we really don't know what version of Cotto is going to walk into that ring.
Willy (BK)
Jerky Boys - Haha. I work with a guy named Rosenberg - always think of Sal.
Brian Campbell (3:51 PM)
Haha. I do the same thing in regular life. Frank Rizzo and Brett Weir, too.
Guy Smiley (Frosty Vancouver)
Brian do you ever take a break from fights once in a while? I mean just shut off the TV and gaze into a snowglobe while sipping, hot cocoa
Brian Campbell (3:52 PM)
I have to admit, I was MUCH MORE of a well-rounded sports fan my entire life before the last two years. But these days, it's pretty much boxing, MMA and the NBA, without much time for anything else, including those "take a break from fights" moments. I tend to skip over those and you can usually find me on my IPad rewatching great fights of old while my wife is holding court with "The Bachelor" on the big screen.
Uncle Drew (Ohio)
I'm not ready to write Pac off just yet he clearly beat Bradley, broke Marquez nose and he would have stopped him had not gotten caught
Brian Campbell (3:53 PM)
I can see both sides of this angle regarding how the KO loss will affect Manny and what does he have left. I think that goes a long way into making this Rios fight one of the most anticipated, at least to me, in a long time.
G-Money (Brooklyn, NY)
Bo knows this and Bo knows that but Bo don't know Jack because Bo can't rap...How about Thurman vs. Ortiz?
Brian Campbell (3:55 PM)
Love it. And love the Tribe reference, as well.
Ghost Deini (Shaolin)
WHY NO WU? WU TANG IS FOR THE CHILDREN!!!! ARE YOU NOT FOR THE CHILDREN BRIAN????!!!!!
Brian Campbell (3:55 PM)
I love children. Just stop yelling at me!
Jackson (IA)
Floyd with a "late" ko over Khan? So...does Floyd not throw a right hand or check hook until round 9? Or does Khan get to wear headgear?
Brian Campbell (3:56 PM)
I hear ya, Brah. Your points are a definite threat to me tossing out things like "late KO." I know. Let's see if the fight gets made, first.
AJ (DC)
Does Rios do anything better than Hatton?
Brian Campbell (3:57 PM)
I don't think that is the question as much as how close to his prime still is this version of Pacquiao.
Grigor (Los Angeles )
Thanks B for the great chats, off on Tuesdays while all my friends work ,one thing that keeps Tuesdays from being boring.. Makes it worth having it off....
Brian Campbell (3:57 PM)
Nice! Great to here, Grigor. Great name, too.
KT (Tennessee)
JACKSON!! SPEAKING THE TRUTH!!
Brian Campbell (3:58 PM)
Yeah, savor the flavor on that one, Jackson. You may have won the battle, but you have a long way to go before winning the war.
Jimmy (Arlington, Va)
Hey Brian, are you making the trip to Macau?
Brian Campbell (3:59 PM)
I will not be going but am looking forward to that fight almost as much as Bradley-Marquez next week.
Reid (Cleveland)
Brian - did you hear that there be an ESPN 30-for-30 on the Leonard-Duran fights?
Brian Campbell (4:00 PM)
I think I found out from the King Freak, himself, just as most of you did on Twitter and I couldn't be more excited.
Cupid (Matchmakerville)
Buy or sell: J. Clottey v Edison Miranda
Brian Campbell (4:00 PM)
Um ... sell.
KT (Tennessee)
Poor Grigor. The rest of us get paid to participate in the chats. :-)
Julian (Dallas/TX)
another 8 round chat, don't let me get use to it if your gonna go back to 4 rounds!!!!! hahaha
Brian Campbell (4:01 PM)
Haha. I'm really coming along as a prospect, aren't I? Take that Gary Russell Jr.!
steve (la mirada, ca)
Yo BC, i saw tribe at the end of july and they said it was the last live performance ever. it was amazing
Brian Campbell (4:03 PM)
Seriously? That stinks. I have never had the pleasure of seeing them. Although I did randomly walk into a Digital Underground concert once at the back of a club in 2004. That was quite a surprise.
KT (Tennessee)
Do you think Stevenson would try to bully Ward or try to box him like he did Cloud?
Brian Campbell (4:05 PM)
I think he would clearly have to mix pressure with some form of boxing because Ward is just too skilled, with too many ways to adjust and adapt inside the ring. Just like against Floyd, you have to be prepared to adjust as Ward does.
Dee (New England)
Brian, I must have your help! Please respond without delay! Please list every Mexican fighter who has ever fought in the U.S.
Brian Campbell (4:05 PM)
Oh dude!!!! She's back!!!!
Ben (Detroit)
Ever got a concussion sparring with headgear?
Brian Campbell (4:08 PM)
Something close to that. I got my bell rung pretty good one time on an overhand right and went down hard. In fact, it was so good that it ended the sparring session prematurely. For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to go directly from there to do my grocery shopping and I was a mess dropping things all over the store. I was like Bradley after the Provodnikov fight. You know, except for the whole two months of slurred speech thing.
Julian (Dallas/TX)
LOL DEES BACK!!
Paul (Concord, CA)
I want Dee in the dark alley with me. She'd verbally confuse the attackers which would be my window of opportunity to run.
Kherby (City of Angels) [via mobile]
I love how seldom Mayweather clinches.
Brian Campbell (4:10 PM)
He's the master. And I know I've said it before, but seeing him up close from ringside really hammers home his brilliance. As much as we can rightfully criticize Canelo for not adjusting at all or going for broke late in that fight, that victory was 100 percent about what Floyd did, instead of the opposite.
Jimmy (Arlington, Va)
Dee's question probably isn't that hard or long if you just list last names.
Big Mike (Austin, Texas)
What up Soup!?!?! Whats your take on Zack and Lisa hooking up? Being that Screech was his best friend and all. He could have practically had any girl in the school! I lost all respect for Morris after that.
Brian Campbell (4:12 PM)
You know what, that's a great question because I always felt that was such an underdeveloped storyline for SBTB. I was a huge fan of that hookup and thought they deserved more time to give it a run and make it work. I didn't lose respect for Zack. Yes, it was a dirtball move to do to your best friend, but come on. That was a small high school and we all know Screech had no chance. Zack had already lapped the field a few times and was out of options.
Marc (Brooklyn, NY)
Much more dominant figure in their respective sport - MJ or Floyd Mayweather?
Brian Campbell (4:12 PM)
MJ. But I can appreciate the question. Also, Jordan made sure he went through the Knicks, Pacers, Jazz, Sonics, Blazers, etc. in order to rack up titles. No hand picking Brah.
agent 007 373 5963 (Catskill Mts.)
Do you think Clottey beat Cotto?
Brian Campbell (4:14 PM)
No, I thought Cotto had a right to a split decision there, or at the very least a draw. That was a heck of a fight, though, and I'm not sure Cotto expected to be life-or-death with him.
GR(Anaheim) [via mobile]
Hey B.C. I never understood why Canelo tried to box Mayweather instead of using his physical advantages. Do you think he would have had better success than Cotto did if he had done so?
Brian Campbell (4:15 PM)
I actually respect that he didn't try to change who he is (a counter puncher) by just rushing Floyd off the start. I never believed that blueprint was going to work for him because he's not that kind of fighter. But with that said, when it became apparent he was not going to be able to outright time Floyd with the left hand (nor was he landing any jabs or really anything to the body), how can you not call him out for being unable to alter his strategy in any way and go for broke?
Brian Campbell (4:16 PM)
I'm not saying it would have worked, but Canelo never gave himself a chance. That is what was surprising. I really believed he was going to make that fight competitive en route to a respectful defeat.
Brian Campbell (4:17 PM)
Alright folks. I am going to stop here. Thanks again for making this chat so much fun. It's been a blast. Follow me on Twitter at @BCampbellESPN and be on the lookout later tonight for our newest episode of "Making The Rounds."
