Chat with Michael Collins

Welcome to Sportsnation! On Monday, ESPN.com golf writer Michael Collins brings his unique perspective as a former caddie into the chat.
Collins, who joined ESPN in August 2011, started his career as a stand up comedian and became a caddy by accident. He started looping for fun in 1999, but by 2003 decided to make it a full-time gig. He was the caddy for Chris Couch in 2003 when he won the Nationwide Tour championship.
Collins has never won an award for his writing, but he'll tell you that's probably because he failed high school English and still types with only his index fingers. But he's smart, funny and, most importantly, knows the game and what players and caddies go through on a weekly basis.
Send your questions now and join Collins Monday at 3 p.m. ET!

Michael Collins (3:00 PM)
It's the fastest hour in golf! Presidents Cup week. You excited? Why or why not? Does the Cup need to be tweaked? How about John Peterson winning Web.com Series without a victory! The FedEx Cup nightmare happened the first year of no Q school, are you ok with it? Here's your chance to have a say... I'm listening (reading). BRING IT!!!
j. russell evansville in [via mobile]
have you ever seen a golfer intentionally cheat and get away with it ?
Michael Collins (3:01 PM)
Never in a tournament. But I have known caddies who have seen it and players who told other caddies, "Tell your man if he does that again I'm gonna call an official."
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What would the Temperature be in Order to Cancel a PGA Tour Event Because it is way too Cold?
Michael Collins (3:02 PM)
It wouldn't be the temp, it'd be if there was ice on the greens. Can't play if there's ice because if you walk on it, it'll kill the grass.
Mike P (Greater KC)
Happy to see Sean O'Hair back on tour for this coming up year... my question is with the wrap around schedule is the PGA tour trying to keep it self relevant during NFL and NCAA / NBA Basketball seasons or is there another reason that im missing... I know that in the past the western swing in Jan & Feb hasnt drawn that many of the top players so is this the PGA's answer to that or is there another reason?
Michael Collins (3:05 PM)
Two things. 1, I think the tour realized that it's core fans will follow all year round, and 2. by making every tournament FedEx Cup point eligible and the winner gets an Augusta (Masters) invite the fields will overall get stronger because guys can really stretch out their schedule. And we are taking the month of December off... so we got that going for us! haha
pj (midlo)
Hi Mike, Well the right man was named player of the year!! next season TW gets over the barrier and wins 2 majors - you heard it first here - just a hunch naturally but he has shown some real brilliance at times this year and some clunkers when the weekends come at times but I think his ability to refocus and achieve will rise to the top
Chris (Chicago)
What percentage do you put on a Tiger/Scott matchup Sunday? If that happens, who wins?
Michael Collins (3:07 PM)
Tiger, but that ain't the match I wanna see... I wanna see Scott/Mickelson
Scott (Raleigh)
Yes, what pj just said... lol
Jacer24 (Rialto, CA)
What is the biggest difference in course conditions we're used to seeing at Muirfield?
Michael Collins (3:08 PM)
This time of year the course will dry so it'll be playing FAST.
Chris (Chicago)
Will Freddie have players practicing together that we may see paired up on Thursday-Saturday? If so, who was paired today at practice?
Michael Collins (3:10 PM)
Davis told me Jordan was out playing today. He and Kuchar were flying up there as soon as they (along with Tommy 2 Gloves) finished their outing for Davis' charity.
Jeff (San Jose, CA)
what are your thoughts on the web.com championship and the coverage of Andres? I feel bad that he was shown so much towards the end in a tough time, but he handled it with class.
Michael Collins (3:12 PM)
You know how much of a heel I felt like having to ask him for an interview afterwards?! But he is such a great guy he said yes but asked to keep his sunglasses on. He's a better man than me. The series needs some tweaks but the format of four tournaments to earn your card is growing on me. I just want a Cinderella story to be an option.
Mark (Hilliard, Ohio)
Michael-Love your work! Will you be in columbus this week for the 'ol presidents cup? Do you have a favorite restaurant here in town? Golf question is- does tiger win a major (s) next year?? I'm writing from a local hospital, because my wife delivered our second child this morning! Maybe I'll see you Saturday, if you're here!
Michael Collins (3:14 PM)
CONGRATS Mark!! Hope mommy and baby are doing perfect. I'll be there in the morning. I LOVE Thurman's Cafe... best burgers on tour BAR NONE! If Tiger wins a major it'll have to be at Augusta this year. And I'm not sure how I feel yet.
victor (Monroe,Louisiana)
Hi MC Do you think Team Usa is ready to win the president;scup this year? And do you thinkl tiger will not hita long 3 woodin the president;s cup?comments.
Michael Collins (3:15 PM)
Team USA dominates the Presidents Cup and it'll be the same this year. 3 of our 4 "rookies" were on the Ryder Cup last year and who's beating Jordan Spieth? Tiger will win every match but one.
TyWebb (Bushwood CC)
Michael, you realize the ESPN execs won't have you NOT picking TW for a major now don't you?
Michael Collins (3:16 PM)
And you realize ESPN doesn't pay enough money to tell me what to think. You should know me better than that scaredy cat.
Joan (Saratoga Springs NY)
Are all the guys there yet? Specifically tell me what is Phil doing?
Michael Collins (3:17 PM)
I won't be there til the morning.
Bryce (NC)
No change to the format MC!!! We need to win!!! haha
Tom (Verona, WI)
Good afternoon, MC! In the Presidents Cup would you like to see the same pairings in foursomes and four-ball or mix them up before each round?
Michael Collins (3:18 PM)
I'd love to see them draw like bingo or lottery. Internationals have one machine full of ping pong balls, US has a separate machine... that would be AWESOME!
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Did you agree with Tiger receiving the POY award with no major championships?
Michael Collins (3:20 PM)
I do. Five wins trumps what everyone else did this year. I just want the tour to release the results of the numbers. Not that I don't completely trust them... BAAAAHAHAHA
Jacer24 (Rialto, CA)
Hey MC... Who are you most worried about having a bad week... on the US side?
Michael Collins (3:21 PM)
Stricker. All the other guys I think can bounce back but Strick I think still has such a bad taste in his mouth from the Ryder Cup. I want him to play his game because someday he'll be a captain of a team.
Bryce (NC)
For web dot com I just want to see the best players play their way onto the tour. For the FedEx Cup you should at least have a win.
Michael Collins (3:23 PM)
Fair enough
Scott (Raleigh)
If I recall correctly, a while back you and I had a spirited disagreement about whether Tiger would ever win another major. I contended that since he was still ranked one in the world, he has a fighting chance in EVERY major, and I believe you disagreed. Now that his colleagues have voted him player of the year, doesn't it make exactly zero sense to think he won't win another major?
Michael Collins (3:25 PM)
The year Luke Donald won both money titles (US and Euro) and was ranked number 1 in the world, how many majors did he win? How many has he won since? Just because you're ranked no.1 doesn't mean you get a major handed to you. And just for the record, I NEVER said Tiger would never win another major.
Sheldon (Wake Forest, NC)
Do you know if Mickleson has ever been ranked number one on the PGA Tour? It seems like he has been close a few times but never quite had the numbers to break through. If true is he perhaps the best golfer to never be ranked number one on the PGA tour?
Michael Collins (3:26 PM)
Phil has never been ranked OWGR #1. Every time he's had a chance he's played horrifically. But I'd have to say he's the best to never touch it that I've ever seen play in person.
Greg (South Bend, IN.)
Hey MC, Will you be doing a Golfcast this weekend? Like during the majors?
Michael Collins (3:27 PM)
YEAH!
Hudson (Columbus)
Why would you want to see phil vs Scott over tiger vs Scott? The excitement in the match of phil/Adam wouldn't even be close to tiger/Adam!
Michael Collins (3:28 PM)
Because Tiger vs. Adam is old to me already they've been paired together so many times already. I wanna see something new.
Bryce (NC)
There is a golfcast??? AWWWWW YEEEAAAHHHHHH!
Michael Collins (3:28 PM)
Starts Thursday!
Jacer24 (Rialto, CA)
MC, any comment on the reported twitter ban at ESPN?
Michael Collins (3:29 PM)
I posted about 5 tweets this morning and no one said anything to me about it. I haven't heard. Must be bad reporting.
JT (Alliance, NE) [via mobile]
C'mon, MC, I was at Medinah last year and there's no possible way the President's Cup can match that kind of atmosphere. I love the PC but it can't maintain, can it?
Michael Collins (3:30 PM)
The vibe is VERY different from the Ryder Cup but it's still electric the first couple days, usually by the singles it's over but there's still drama between certain dudes.
Jacer24 (Rialto, CA)
And now there will be a disagreement about MC saying Tiger wouldn't win another major.... Did he EVER say that?
Michael Collins (3:32 PM)
Anyone here on my chats and anyone here who's been on my Golfcasts know the truth. I even did a video after an appearance on Mike and Mike this year cause I had to change my answer about Tiger.
Jacer24 (Rialto, CA)
Ya... sorry... i did a little digging and it was a bad tip.
Michael Collins (3:32 PM)
See twitter is WIDE open for us!
TyWebb (Bushwood CC)
I'm not excited about the President's Cup, help me out, what would get me fired up for this??
Michael Collins (3:33 PM)
You know you'll be watching and getting fired up any time they show Tiger, don't lie. Gives you a chance to complain about it! haha
victor (Louisiana)
What does team usa need to do to win the president;s cup?
Michael Collins (3:34 PM)
Stay upright. It's gonna be a blowout.
Bryce (NC)
Any idea of what you will be covering after the Presidents Cup?
Michael Collins (3:35 PM)
No golf til '14 as far as I know but I might try and "sneak" to an event or two.
Tom (Verona, WI)
Any chance Sarah makes a golfcast appearance? Come on!
Michael Collins (3:35 PM)
I asked for her but she's tied up with something else so Farrell is gonna help me out.
Lee (PA)
If Tiger doesn't win another major (I think he won't) or doesn't reach Jack's 18, how will his career be viewed/remembered. You can assume he will continue to win other tournaments that he plays and wins every year and ends his career with the most career wins and most career money.
Michael Collins (3:36 PM)
The debate over who is the best of all time will always be there. Even if he gets to 100 wins and even if Jack says he's the best of all time, there will be an argument.
Bryce (NC)
Still got Fowler winning a major next year? I think somebody that just graduated from the web dot com tour will win a major before him
Michael Collins (3:37 PM)
I still think he gets one IF he's healthy, but that could be a big ask for the whole year.
Austin (Pittsburgh, PA)
Even if they change the format of the President's Cup, do you really think it will help? It's just always going to be second fiddle to the Ryder Cup, same as the Seve Trophy that can't even got the top players this year.
Michael Collins (3:39 PM)
Nothing is gonna touch the Ryder Cup and honestly if that's what they're going for it's a futile chase. But being #2 in a team format really ain't that bad when you get the rest of the world involved. I just wish there was a way to make it more competitive.
TyWebb (Bushwood CC)
O/U on Jordan Speith record this week? >2 wins or less?
Michael Collins (3:39 PM)
Jordan is Over 2 wins
mu sung (pittsburgh)
This is Freddy's 3rd captaincy of the Presidents cup. Players must love to play for big Fred.
Michael Collins (3:41 PM)
They do. Davis even joked about that today. He said Fred called him up last week and said, "You're doing a great job." DL III said he saw Zach at church and told him, "GO PRACTICE!" Zach said, "What?" Love told him, "When you see Freddie, tell him I told you to go practice so he thinks I'm doing SOMETHING!"
Keith H (Seattle)
1) Ever since Q-School doesn't feed into the PGA Tour, I've had a problem with it (Read Feinstein's book). 2) Anytime we have international match play I'm all in.
Michael Collins (3:42 PM)
I'm all in with you!
Sean (NJ)
MC - back to the cheating question, how would a touring pro actually cheat? I mean, I know how I cheat out on the course, but that's a whole different story haha
Michael Collins (3:43 PM)
the easiest way is for a tour pro to move your coin on the green. It's the hardest to see. Put the ball down closer to the hole then where your coin was.
Al (Pensacola)
Enjoy your chats Mike. Prez Cup pairings should be fun. I like the idea of Tiger playing with Duf. Who's your go-to duo>
Michael Collins (3:44 PM)
Spieth/Tiger
Keith H (Seattle)
Michael, here's a point I brought up with Wilbon that resonated. I think we're close enough to the same age, it will with you. Today's generation is lacking 1) Patience and 2) A Sense of History. The phones they're using might be smarter than they are.
Michael Collins (3:47 PM)
My phone is smarter than me, I'll admit that right now! But is that just this younger generation? Everyone wants to play 18 holes in 2 hours, everyone forgets what it was like in the 60's and 70's (including me cause I wasn't born til the 70's) but we're all making mistakes because we are forgetting the past.
Tom (Verona, WI)
Idea for video this week: go drinking with Phil and casually ask him who got his vote for POY.
Michael Collins (3:48 PM)
To coax that answer outta Phil I'd have to have a box of warm Krispy Kreme doughnuts!! HAHA
Joan (Saratoga springs NY)
Who would make a better Ryder cup Captain at Bethpage. Phil or tiger. I SAY PHIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Michael Collins (3:49 PM)
Either one will make a good captain, but i see Phil embracing the role more than Tiger would.
Jacer24 (Rialto, CA)
Do they actually think another 2 inches betters their chances?!? Yikes.
Michael Collins (3:50 PM)
Tells you what head cases some guys can be.
Bryce (NC)
Thoughts on Guan doing the skills challenge with Tiger and Rory in China?
Michael Collins (3:50 PM)
He doesn't hit it far enough to go toe to toe with them in that format yet.
Jacer24 (Rialto, CA)
I wonder if TyWebb gets excited about Memphis... or New Orleans... or Reno... when no one int he top 25 is palying. Pres cup is some of the best in the world... one last time before winter hits...
Michael Collins (3:52 PM)
Nah, he's only interested in talking Tiger, and then trolling on Harig. I think there's a secret man crush. Thinking he has both there pictures in his room. LOL
Tom (L.A.) [via mobile]
When Watson said there shouldn't be captain's picks for Ryder Cup, was that code for " I don't want anyone to dislike me for not picking them"?
Michael Collins (3:53 PM)
Nah, that was code for, your captains picks whooped our picks last time
Dave (Pitt)
Could we a see a playing captain in either the Ryder or President's Cup someday?
Michael Collins (3:53 PM)
Presidents Cup yes, but Ryder Cup no. Too much behind the scenes stuff that would keep a guy from staying his sharpest on the course.
Jacer24 (Rialto, CA)
Tiger would get to 100 easy if he played more birdie-fest events and not just the majors/WGC and a few others.
Michael Collins (3:54 PM)
But that's not where he thrives. It's part of the reason he doesn't play them.
Nemes (P-Town)
IF Tiger finishes with 14 majors and 100+ wins, is he the GOAT in your opinion? I say yes, the level of competition in Tiger's era is greater than at any time ever with dozens of players who can win versus a handful back in Jack's day, no disrespect.
Michael Collins (3:55 PM)
I"ll ask Jack that question and see what he says, then when Tiger quits I'll ask him and that'd be a good place to start the argument.
John (Denver)
Furyk or Stricks over either Phil or Tiger for captain at Bethpage.
Michael Collins (3:56 PM)
More likely too.
Bryce (NC)
Radio on Wednesday? Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel!
Michael Collins (3:56 PM)
Not that I know of.
Tom (L.A.) [via mobile]
Posed this to your golf buddy Harig last week, but isn't a vote against Tiger for POY this year kind of like "we can't vote Jordan MVP every year... hey Karl Malone"?
Michael Collins (3:57 PM)
No cause there were legit reasons guys could say Phil was better in the majors, but when it comes down to it the right guy won.
Jacer24 (Rialto, CA)
MC, we see tour players hitting 200 yard 7 irons... How far would they drive the ball if they really went at it... 20 handicapper style?
Michael Collins (3:58 PM)
I've seen guys rip a few over 350, but they can hit it further when it's controlled instead of out of their shoes.
Dave (Pitt)
Will you be doing any chats during the break?
Michael Collins (3:58 PM)
Don't know yet
Jacer24 (Rialto, CA)
Hey... where'd my hour go? It was here a minute ago...
Tom (Verona, WI)
Thanks for chat, MC! Remember to pack your clubs.
Michael Collins (4:00 PM)
Told ya it'd go really fast! But don't worry, I'll be doing the live coverage of the Presidents Cup starting Thursday for every match! So catch up with me then. Until then... @ESPNCaddie on twitter or if you need me sooner ESPNCaddie@gmail.comHave a great week everyone! MC
