Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:01 PM)
Thanks for stopping by to chat. Lot of things happening with the Ravens these days. Let's start answering some questions.
whats up with Ray Rice only rushing 5 times for 17 yards. Are the ravens trying to pass more or is Rice still a little banged up.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:04 PM)
Rice was definitely not a full strength and Flacco insinuated that both backs being banged up led the Ravens to throw the ball more. The biggest thing is the Ravens were getting no production out of their ground game. They made the decision to air it out and it almost worked.
If Oher leaves via free agency, are either Reid or Wagner capable of playing right tackle for the ravens?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:06 PM)
The Ravens like Wagner, but I haven't been impressed with him during his brief playing time this year. He looked overmatched. Of course, he may need another year to develop. But there is no way the Ravens can trust Jah Reid at right tackle. They're going to have to come up with a backup plan because the Ravens aren't going to be able to sign Oher if they reach an extension with Eugene Monroe.
Bigger need Receiver or tight end?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:07 PM)
Tight end. At least the Ravens are getting some production out of Marlon Brown and Brandon Stokley. No one is really stepping up at tight end. The Ravens have been hurt by the fact that Dickson hasn't lived up to expectations this year.
Hi Jamison,I'm curious about possible other improvements to the Ravens' O-line. Given Harbaugh's less than stellar review of Gradkowski, and the fact he kept Ryan Jensen on the 53-man roster, could there be a change at Center once Jensen gets healthy?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:09 PM)
You have to consider the possibility because there has to be a reason why the Ravens are keeping Jensen on the 53-man roster and not putting him on IR. Gradkowski has played like a rookie too often this year. We'll find out what happens once Jensen gets healthy.
Rank in order of importance for resigning.... pitta, jones, monroe, oher, ihedigbo, smith
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:11 PM)
Pitta, Monroe, D.Smith, Art Jones, Oher, Ihedigbo, Jacoby Jones.
How would you grade Deonte Thompson's performance on sunday? Is there potential for him to be a weapon for Flacco in the future?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:13 PM)
I was impressed with the way he was able to stretch the field, especially in his first game. I don't see him more than a No. 3 wide receiver. Thompson doesn't catch the ball with his hands. He lets it get to his body too often. That leads to too many drops. But he did flash a lot of potential.
Jonathan M. (Lake Geneva, WI)
How soon can we expect Monroe to be starting at Tackle?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:14 PM)
Judging by the way Harbaugh talked this week, it looks like he'll get a chance to play starting next week. He may not even practice until Friday.
Lindsay Askew (Columbia MD)
With the acquisition on Monroe from Jacksonville is Baltimore completely handcuffed to their current roster for the rest of the season? I can't imagine the Ravens have much cap room to address WR or TE. Maybe it's worth bringing Furstenberg up for the PS?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:15 PM)
You're right about the cap room. The Ravens only have $1.2 million in space and Monroe is making $3.8 million this year. The best way to create cap room fast is restructure someone like Suggs or Ngata. That will also give the Ravens enough cushion for the rest of the season.
Ernest (Los Angeles) [via mobile]
Jamison is our offensive line the worst in the league? I called off work to watch the raven game last week and it was one of the worst outings from that unit I have seen in a while? Did Matt birk make THAT much of a difference?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:17 PM)
I haven't been able to see a lot of other games to study offensive lines. But this has been one of the worst starts for a Ravens offensive line that I've seen. As Ray Rice said, the key is matching the other team's intensity. The line is getting blown off the ball. That's a collective failure.
Scott (Chambersburg, PA )
Jamison, do you think we will see Pitta and/or Jameel Mclain on the field this year? It's well documented that the tight end position is an issue and it appears that Bynes isn't playing consistently.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:19 PM)
Honestly, I don't see either coming back this year. Pitta is off crutches, and I saw McClain in the locker room the other day. But I wouldn't expect either one to return this year.
Rod (Baltimore) [via mobile]
Before the season started I thought Ravens would have to address left tackle next offseason, but with the trade for Eugene Monroe and more than likely they'll sign him to an extension what does that mean for The Blind Side Michael Oher after the season??
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:20 PM)
I can't see the Ravens signing both offensive tackles this offseason. Left tackle is the most important position on the line, so you have to try to keep Monroe. That makes Oher the odd-man out.
Jamison, how about the secondary, what do the ravens do with Huff?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:21 PM)
At this point, Huff is a good veteran backup. He struggled and Ihedigbo has played better than him. Huff hasn't been a disruption in the locker room, and he's known for being a good character guy. Not sure if the Ravens are going to pay him next year if he's just a backup, though.
Raven (Out of Nest)
Read a report that Rolando McClain's agent said that he was looking to return, with our current group of LB's any chance we actually hold on to him?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:25 PM)
Ravens hold his rights and he's under contract for vet minimum. It doesn't hurt the Ravens to take a look at him if he comes back next year. The worst thing that can happen is the Ravens cut him before the 2014 season starts. All they would waste is time.
If Monroe isn't ready to go until next week, what type of performance can the Ravens expect out of McKinnie this week knowing he's all but benched?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:26 PM)
There is a concern about that because his salary is guaranteed this year. The only motivation for McKinnie is to show other teams that he can still play. But I'm not sure if there is another team that would want this headache.
I like the Monroe trade, but giving up fourth and fifth round picks for a guy signed to play 11-12 games is a bit much. With a top-notch GM like Ozzie, do you think the Ravens were better off with the picks?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:27 PM)
The Ravens should get compensatory picks in the fourth and fifth rounds for losing Kruger, Ellerbe, Reed and Cary Williams. So, in the big picture, the Ravens traded picks that they expect to get back through the compensatory system. That's why it makes sense.
Jamison, any very, very early guesses on who the Ravens want to target in the 1st round of next year's draft? WR, TE, even an OT maybe?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:28 PM)
Can you tell me what the Ravens do in free agency in March? The team's draft priorities would change if the Ravens re-signed Pitta or Monroe or both. It's a tough question to answer in Week 5 of the regular season.
Who do you think gets cut for Monroe's spot on the 53 man roster?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:29 PM)
Probably an offensive lineman.
Scott (Northglenn, CO)
Whoa! Someone's complaining about giving up a 4th and 5th for a top 10 LT who's 26? You'd be lucky if one of those picks ends up being a soild starter in 3 years..highway robbery..even above-average LT's get drafted in the top 15 of the 1st rd each year
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:29 PM)
What's up with this Ravens (only) chat? Is this because of your years covering the team for the Baltimore Sun or due to the Super Bowl last season? Just curious, since I enjoy your AFC North chats, but have never seen an exclusive chat for any of the other AFC North teams. Do my Browns need to win something before we see a SportsNation chat titled "Browns" with Jamison Hensley?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:31 PM)
Guess you missed the memo. ESPN has had team reporters for the past month. I've only been filling in on the Browns. I'm focused on the Ravens now. That's why I am hosting a Ravens chat. Thanks for stopping by.
eddy (Cali )
with the line not be as great this year what should we expect from our running game this year.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:32 PM)
Averaging 2.6 yards per carry is unacceptable. The Ravens should be averaging at least 4 yards per carry. That's what everyone should expect.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:33 PM)
Appreciate all of the questions. Have to run to post more blogs. Let's do this again next week at the same time.
