Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:02 PM)
Good afternoon everyone! Let's get right to your questions... as always, both football and baseball are fair game, but if you've got a baseball inquiry, make sure to put "BASEBALL" at the beginning. Here we go!
Piotr (Catch 22)
Have both Gronk and Graham...what to do, what to do? Injuries galore and next week is a bye week for NO
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:04 PM)
Why would you own both of those players? I can't imagine that was a smart usage of draft resources, but then you never know, maybe you got them in the fourth and eighth rounds respectively. In which case, though, I think you'll have a difficult time dealing either at market value if your league has that little regard for tight ends.I've been firm on this for weeks: Gronkowski is the guy I trade, if I can, but this week might represent the most difficult time during which to do so. The best times: Right after his 2013 debut, or right after his first double-digit game.
Is Stevan Ridley back?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:06 PM)
I think so, considering he didn't start and did effectively nothing for a quarter of the game, then put forth those numbers despite the game flow not always dictating the run. Whether the Patriots agree with me, well, that's unclear, but I do think this was the performance that A) gives him the lead in that cluttered backfield once more, and B) restores him to mid-to-high-end RB2 status.
Hello, have you ever heard of someone wanting draft value in trades? For example, I want A Morris and he wants T Pryor but AM was a second round pick and TP was a FA pickup. In this is the case than MJD is fair cause I drafted him in the third round.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:07 PM)
I have heard of this, yes, and owners who do this are incredibly foolish. Draft-day tags are irrelevant as early as five seconds after the completion of your draft; that said they serve merely one tool in evaluating players. But in Week 6? C'mon, plenty can change between now and then. For the record, I'd prefer Morris, so I do understand if haggling with this owner results in you sweetening the pot ... a little.
Chiefs D is legit. Jump on the bandwagon while there's still seats, folks.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:09 PM)
It is, but to reiterate my points from last week's Consistency Ratings, expecting a continuation of this 19-points-per-game performance to date is asking a lot, especially with the schedule they have upcoming. Don't just lazily lock them in if you see a streaming opportunity upcoming that you prefer.
HELP!!! Would you drop Matthews for Ellington? Another option is trading Powell and gonzo for Doug Martin. Other te is Thomas. I really need help at rb!! Thanks!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:11 PM)
Can you do both? As in, a 2-for-1 trade clearing the space to add Andre Ellington? That'd be the smartest route, though I prefer the trade first, the add/drop second, if I must pick.Regarding Ellington, he's another player locked into the #freegio class, as in, he's a clearly superior player to his backfield partner but one without any imminent sign of completely relegating said partner to little-used-backup status.
Ryan F. (Tulsa, OK) [via mobile]
Deep league, who are you picking up first, Jacobs or Randle?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:13 PM)
Reuben Randle. The Giants are and always will be a pass-first offense this season, mainly because they're a bad team usually playing from behind (or at least close on the scoreboard). But I don't buy the Brandon Jacobs game at all. Watching this guy, he makes Michael Turner from 2012 look quick, and I think that's a rep that's going to come back to haunt him over the coming weeks.
Conflicting comments from Carroll on Percy. Does he start in wk 7 or do they hold him out another week?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:14 PM)
He's not going to play in Week 7. It's a short week, for one thing. I'd be stunned if Percy Harvin played on Thursday. That said, he might practice this week, then be a questionable/game-time decision listing heading into Week 8. Certainly I'd be making roster preparations under that specific assumption; it means he's a surefire add all around.
Jack (White Plains)
Hi Tristan, Thanks in part to your great advice, I am 6-0 and in first but have 2 tough weeks ahead of me. I have a 3:30 meeting so hoping you can get to this early...I have Miles on my bench but am thinking about Harvin. I am going to make the playoffs either way, would you drop Miles for Harvin at this point (have Thompkins, Eledman, Welker and Gordon)? Or what about Crabtree?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:15 PM)
Congrats on your 6-0, especially in a season as nutty as this one has been to date.I'd drop Miles for Harvin, yes. Smart move especially if it's a long-term stash first and foremost. I'm not a big Michael Crabtree believer, though. He's a little further off and I don't see his ceiling being quite as high.
Not positive, but I think Ryan F. from Tulsa was asking about Joseph Randle, not Reuben.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:18 PM)
Silly me, but then, that's the danger of listing a common last name, you're going to think of the player who garnered the largest headlines in the given week.Same answer, though what I'd caution those excited to add Joseph Randle is that Lance Dunbar, when healthy, will factor into that backfield, even if it's only on passing downs.
Megatron will finish the season as fantasy's ____ WR?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:20 PM)
I'm not sure "finish" gives you the advice you need -- all that matters is what lies ahead -- but I'd say he'll finish about sixth, maybe seventh. It means I see better, albeit not Calvin Johnson's usual, stuff ahead, and a lot of that is what I see as a bye week's rest (Week 9) doing him a lot of good, then those great late-season matchups (GB, @Phi, Bal, NYG, @Min, to close it out).
Which Greenbay receiver do you most want on your team through the rest of the year?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:21 PM)
If I knew Randall Cobb's injury wasn't serious, that he'd play either this week or next, he'd be my answer. Unfortunately I have no update on his status -- the waiting game is a stressful one -- so I guess I need say Jordy Nelson considering the prospect that Cobb misses multiple weeks.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:22 PM)
By the way, anyone mind if, while we're on the topic of Packers wide receivers, I drop in a little love for Jarrett Boykin? He was one of my uber-deep sleepers from the preseason, and while a raw talent, has the kind of ability that might make him a worthwhile WR3/4 given the expanded opportunity. You know, kinda like what Terrence Williams was about three weeks ago...
Moreno locked in as an RB1 rest of the way?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:23 PM)
If not RB1 then very surely high-end RB2. To debate this as "top-10 versus top-12" is splitting hairs and a waste of our time.
Dropped Kyle Rudolph last week and OF COURSE he goes off! Stick with Clay or try to add him back so he can boom or bust me the rest of the season?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:25 PM)
Garbage time, Scott, garbage time was largely the reason behind Rudolph's outburst, and the performance did fall firmly in line with his 2012 pattern of boom/bust games.I'm not buying, at least not at any level greater than I would have a week ago -- so that's about a No. 12-15 tight end -- and I'll remind that in addition to his unpredictability he's going to endure the impact of a quarterback change in the next couple weeks.
Rob Ryan (the bar)
When can owners expect the return of S-Jax?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:26 PM)
He insists that he'll be ready for Week 7, coming out of the bye, but last report I read was that he missed the bye-week practice. I'd check the practice reports beginning on Wednesday, and my guess is he'll be a questionable listing for this week at best.
Who would be your top 3 Buy lows right now?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:28 PM)
I'm breaking your rules, Phil, sorry! I'd buy low on: Robert Griffin III, Trent Richardson, Pierre Garcon, T.Y. Hilton, C.J. Spiller.
Tori Hunter (the bullpen)
How ya feeling about Jordan Cameron these days? Sounds like Weeden is out. Is that a good sign?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:30 PM)
That's not what I read, last I heard, Brandon Weeden is starting in Week 7.One game isn't going to turn me away from Cameron, especially since Cameron had that nice Week 1 when Weeden was also starting. It's a little bit of a hit -- I preferred what I saw in the Cameron-Hoyer connection -- but we're still talking about a surefire top-five TE.
Chris (North Carolina)
"Ethics" question: what are your thoughts on not playing a kicker in order to be able to carry an extra player off the waiver wire? I think people should have to field a full team but my league plays by standard rules so we have nothing explicitly against it.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:32 PM)
I know that it is permitted in the rules, but I do not like it, not one bit. It is my belief that a fantasy lineup, each and every week, should have a healthy, active (read: non-bye) player in every allotted spot. That's not to say this answer gives you any authority over anything. Just my opinion.
Courtesy to the League (in contrast to "ethics")
Owner tries to trade A.Rodgers to the league commissioner for A.Dalton. League votes to veto the trade. Commissioner then offers A.Dalton and C.Palmer for A.Rodgers, which is accepted. If commissioner succeeds in pushing the deal through, would it be unreasonable of another owner to waive all of his players and leave the league immediately?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:34 PM)
If there is a voting system for trades, the votes carry the day, no ifs, ands or buts. That said, the correct thing to do when you decide, midseason, that you either dislike the league or distrust the commish is to ride out the season in a low-key, yet professional way, then quietly bow out after the year and find a better league.
Cutler over RGIII, correct?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:35 PM)
For what, season? Week 7? If it's a Week 7 question I understand the Cutler instinct, but I'm likely to rank RGIII higher of the two regardless of those matchups implications. And for the rest of the year, I don't think this is close.
What should my expectations be for roddy white for the rest of the year?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:37 PM)
I'm actually intrigued by what White might be able to do coming out of the bye, enough that I might bite if the asking price was low-end WR2/high-end WR3 at best. He's going to need to take on a huge additional load in the wake of the Julio Jones injury, though I'll be clear, I'm not all in because his own injury is the kind that could linger.
Ryan F. (Tulsa, OK) [via mobile]
What do you watch live vs. DVR, playoff baseball or regular season NFL?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:38 PM)
I'll usually picture-in-picture it, or I'll put baseball on the tablet.
How much do you like preseason darling Ivory now that Goodson's done for the season? More or less than Hunter?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:39 PM)
I've never been on the Chris Ivory bandwagon. He's a speed demon, but he's injury prone, and speed demons need holes opened, like the ones Drew Brees, not Geno Smith, can consistently create in a defense. At best he'll sneak onto the flex-play tier, but I'm more optimistic about Bilal Powell if I must pick a Jets RB here.
So how many good hammys does it take to have a good game? I guess for Fitzgerald it's 0. How will he do on the short week vs Seattle?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:40 PM)
I want very little part of Larry Fitzgerald in the Thursday game. He's not at peak strength, it's a short week and I hope you all read my research piece on position-specific Thursday performances. Wide receiver is one that suffers; I might have him ranked in the 20s.
Every time I watch Alf play, I see him come off on 3rd downs or even in whole sets when they are behind. I find myself frustrated but at the end of the day he somehow ends up breaking something off. Is that just how it goes? Is he going to be limited while playing from behind, or is the read option going to start opening things up for him? ROS outlook
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:43 PM)
But that's Alfred Morris. In fact, I think several people on ESPN staff have pointed this out about him all calendar year; he's just not a pass-catcher so he's obviously going to be lifted in those situations.I do think RGIII's continuing recovery is going to be a plus for Morris; I still see Morris as low-end RB1 material, if not high-end RB2. Going back to the earlier question, he belongs right there with Knowshon Moreno, though frankly, I prefer Moreno right now.
Who would you drop for Harvin (if any) - Bowe, Hilton, Jeffrey, Gordon, Nicks, White, Fitz.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:44 PM)
Hey, want a crazy one? Cutting Dwayne Bowe is on the table on a team like this.
What's the point of ranking RB 7-20? They're all the same, aren't they?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:45 PM)
They're awfully close, but weekly matchups will shuffle them around.
Hey Tristan! Do you think Josh Gordon straight up for Reggie Bush in a PPR keeper league is a fair trade? Which side would you rather have?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:48 PM)
I'd rather have Reggie Bush.
Ben (West Va.)
Tristan Decker or Blackmon for ROS in standard scoring?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:49 PM)
I'm pretty pro-Justin Blackmon. Decker's drops are beginning to bother me, not to mention that the Jaguars should throw a lot.
Think Leveon Bell makes any noise the rest of the season or will Pitts offensive line hold him down?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:51 PM)
I think on the low-end RB2/high-end flex tier, yes. I'm more impressed by what I see in Bell than I expected; stats were bad this week but it was also a poor matchup for him. You'll enjoy him against the softer fronts.
David (West Melbourne,Fla.)
TC better RB for ROS in standard : Lacy or Moreno?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:53 PM)
I think it's Moreno, and that's coming from someone who has been a huge backer of Lacy all year.I'll say this: I think Lacy would be a surefire top-15 running back if I was to make rest-of-year ranks. I don't think he's far off.
Would should I do with Vincent Jackson. Since he has been struggling before his last game, should I sell high on him or keep him.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:54 PM)
What I said earlier about "quarterback adjustment periods" and the Vikings applies(/applied) to Vincent Jackson. I see some more ups and downs, but this was a very promising sign for his 2013 forecast, at least against the softer secondaries.
Would possible offseason trades worry you about players like Price and Scherzer? Keeper league.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:55 PM)
Besides the obvious Colorado Rockies/Coors Field trade, I actually wouldn't be a fan of David Price at Fenway Park. It's not that I think any trade would significantly impact either player's value, but a lefty in Fenway... it'd be a slight hit.
Thoughts on jacoby jones
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:56 PM)
Return man who plays a bit in three-wide sets and probably capitalized upon a larger opportunity than usual due to injuries. I wouldn't bite, unless my league awards for return yardage (in which case he's almost assuredly owned already).
Is Foles the new QB or does Vick hang on?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:57 PM)
I think Nick Foles needs another strong game to officially take the job when both are healthy, but I could sure see the Eagles claiming that Michael Vick "isn't ready yet" to take one more look.
Todd (Rochester, NY)
down 16 tonight. PPR go with T-rich or woodhead?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:58 PM)
Wow. Well, with Ryan Mathews likely to play, I can't go Danny Woodhead, even in PPR. I just don't see the upside to get him up to 16.
Andre Brown get a shot at being the main rb in week ____??
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:59 PM)
I still think it'll take until the Thanksgiving week or so before he's truly ready for that, and I don't have the exact dates in front of me. Week 12, if I was going to guess?
Have we not seen Mathews play before?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (3:59 PM)
Total touches, Mark, total touches... volume matters particularly in PPR.
Help me TC! Standard league. Should I drop ZacStacy for either DMC or BrandonJacobs?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:00 PM)
I wouldn't cut Zac Stacy right now. I might try to find someone else to drop to acquire Darren McFadden, but otherwise, no, you know, I'm standing pat.
.5ppr who should I pick up? Ridley, Ellington or Jacobs? Thanks
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:01 PM)
I'd add them in that order, and the gap between the latter two is larger than the former two.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (4:01 PM)
Ok, time to wrap things up for today. Thanks for all your questions, and sorry if I couldn't get to yours today.
