Garry Paskwietz (4:59 PM)
Welcome everyone, let's get started.
Mark (San Diego)
Are any of the current commits lined up for early entry? Is it possible that we won't be able to fill those 4 slots?
Garry Paskwietz (5:00 PM)
All three offensive line commits (Lobendahn, Poland and Austin) are planning to enroll early. I'm sure the Trojans will find another person to fill out the final spot.
MJ (Davis, CA)
Hi Gary, what needs to happen for our Trojans to beat OSU tomorrow night? Thanks.
Garry Paskwietz (5:02 PM)
I think it's going to take some points. The Beavers are the top-ranked teams in terms of passing yards so you figure they are going to move the ball. That probably translates into a game at least in the 20's or 30's. That means the SC offense will need to keep up and produce some decent numbers if they want to come out of there with a win.
When do you believe a new coach will be in place? I believe it should be no later than the end of November, to make sure we get the 4 early enrollee in school.
Garry Paskwietz (5:04 PM)
I think an announcement will come as soon as possible after the final regular season game (either the UCLA game or, possibly, the Pac-12 title game). That puts it at end of November or first week of December. The first big recruiting weekend of the year is scheduled for December 13 so you definitely want things settled before then.
MJ (Davis, CA)
How is the patched up O line looking? Do you see a drop off in our run production based on the injuries on the O line?
Garry Paskwietz (5:06 PM)
It was very interesting that 3 positions got changed because of the injury to Graf (LG, RG, RT). That is a lot of shuffling for a line that was still trying to get settled but I don't think it will be a huge drop off in the run game because the player coming in the line-up (John Martinez) has a lot of starting experience.
Anthony, Okemah ok. [via mobile]
What's you full out prediction for USC for the rest of the year? If they finish the rest of the year without a loss is coach O the man?
Garry Paskwietz (5:09 PM)
If the Trojans win the remaining games I think that is a great case for Coach O to make. I like the progress the team is making and the way they are playing hard for Orgeron but so much right now is predicated on injuries. You just don't know who is going to be out there from week to week.
casey (san diego)
do yo think there is any chance we can get back in the good graces of dwight williams? if we did it seems like that would help sway adoree jackson back away from the SEC.
Garry Paskwietz (5:11 PM)
I don't get the sense that there is a lot of momentum for that one right now. The Trojans had already offered a lot of Dwight's teammates and then recently offered a fellow linebacker in Olajuwon Tucker, who quickly accepted. Even with all that, I still think if the Trojans ever made a real push then there would be a shot with Dwight.
Evan (San Diego )
Which four coaches would you like to see be handed the keys to this team next year.
Garry Paskwietz (5:14 PM)
Here would be four choices that I think would be good ones for USC: Jack Del Rio, Ed Orgeron, Pat Fitzgerald, Jon Gruden. I'm still not sold that Gruden would come back to the college game but he would sure be an interesting choice.
Huge IF scenario here but if we do retain Orgeron as our HC which recruits do you think we will be able to snag commits from?
Garry Paskwietz (5:15 PM)
If Orgeron is being retained then I would assume things had gone well down the stretch so I think guys like Mama, JuJu and Adoree could all still be in play. I also think someone like Wadood could be a great candidate to flip from Cal.
Hi Garry. Thanks for the good job. I want to ask a question that have been asked when the season began. How anxious (10 - extremely anxious) are you when you read the injury report today? Will Su'a Craven and Dion Bailey suit up against Oregon State?
Garry Paskwietz (5:19 PM)
It's an 8-9 on the scale. I think Lee and Breslin are the most productive players on either side of the ball for the Trojans and both are likely out in this game, The situation also doesn't look good at TE or with Graf. I do think both Bailey and Cravens play so that would be welcome news for the defense.
Nick (sf) [via mobile]
Who will be the next big commitment? And your predicition for oregon state?
Garry Paskwietz (5:21 PM)
Loyola OL Chris Brown has been on fire lately with a run of scholarship offers but it still wouldn't surprise me if he commits to SC in the near future. I think the Trojans pull this one out, let's say 28-26.
Pretty simple question here Garry, with our remaining schedule having three big games against ranked opponents at this time in OSU/Stanford/UCLA and other opponents in Cal/Colorado, how many of these games do you think Orgeron NEEDS to win to remove that interim tag and become our official HC? I say a competitve 4-1 with a loss to Stanford and winning out would do it..
Garry Paskwietz (5:23 PM)
I would tend to agree with you. I like that you used the word competitive in a potential loss because I think that is important to the way Haden is judging Orgeron. Is the team playing for him? The results haven't always been the best but I think everyone would agree the answer is yes.
Garry. Great job covering the Team. I want to know why is Cody Kessler holding kicks?
Garry Paskwietz (5:24 PM)
I never understand it when a starting quarterback is in that role.
Hello Garry! I know PH is holding the names close to the vest, but with the recruits still holding on wait and see who the next coach will be, have u heard of any name or names of coaches that might get this guys excited and come to USC. I hope is a college coach, a coach that just wants and understands what USC is all about, someone that embraces everything that comes with being the coach @USC! I believe that we have a great shot to still finish with a great class. So a homerun hire would still be able to pull in a great class that will bring us back to where USC belongs!
Garry Paskwietz (5:26 PM)
The only one that can really be judged so far is Orgeron and he would definitely be a popular choice among the recruits. It remains to be seen if Orgeron has done or will do enough to get the full time job. If not, it is known that Haden wants to make a big splash with this hire so it would be that kind of high profile candidate.
Of all the names you have heard since Lane has been fired who do you think would be the best man for the job and why? My choice would be Jon Gruden if he wanted the job
Garry Paskwietz (5:28 PM)
I still would make the argument that the best fit for the job would be Del Rio.
Garry--enjoy your work very much. I am a week late with this but I would ask your thought about the inordinate # of holding calls on the USC offensive line in the game against Notre Dame. I have heard some commentators say that even more calls could have been made, that the line was just that outmatched by the ND front. Your thoughts on the # of calls/ Thanks.
Garry Paskwietz (5:30 PM)
After the team had a chance to watch the film it didn't sound like there was too much protesting about the calls. I don't know that all of them were correct but the majority of them probably were. The one holding call that certainly wasn't called was the one on the ND linebacker against Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick at the end of the game.
Trojan Hoarse (Planet Earth)
Will Josh Shaw return to the Trojans next year, or will he enter the NFL draft?
Garry Paskwietz (5:33 PM)
There hasn't been too much speculation on this but maybe there should be. Josh has said it's not something he's really thinking about although he did admit that his ability to play both safety and corner is good for his long term future. In other words, the NFL likes guys with the versatility to play both spots so that could increase his value in the draft this year. If he continues to play well, that could end up being more of a realistic possibility.
Are the scholarship restrictions finally over?
Garry Paskwietz (5:33 PM)
No, the class of 2014 that is signed next Feb is the last class to be under the restrictions.
What is going on with Max Browne these days? Does he realistically have a shot as the QB starter next year?
Garry Paskwietz (5:38 PM)
Max has settled in to life as a scout team quarterback who signals in plays on game days. He won't really re-enter the quarterback competition until spring and it remains to be seen where Cody Kessler will be as the incumbent starter at that point. Right now it looks like Cody is making good strides. Any chance Browne has of competing for the job could also depend on who is in the head coaching seat.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Which Arizona school do you think will be a legitimate conference contender every year first?
Garry Paskwietz (5:39 PM)
Arizona State seems like the safer pick with the way they are recruiting but something about Rich Rod tells me that Arizona is the more likely choice.
Paul (Albany, OR)
What will go right for USC that you think they will score 28 points on the road against a team with a much improved defense on Friday?
Garry Paskwietz (5:42 PM)
The fact that the Beavers are giving up an average of 28 points per game this year. I don't think the SC offense is going to go crazy but I think they are going to do just enough to get there.
Space Ghost (Coast-to-Coast)
Do you think Stanford's win over OSU helps build a blue-print for our defense? Stanford almost entirely shut down the high-flying OSU attack, and honestly I believe our front-7 can create more pressure than the Farm this year.
Garry Paskwietz (5:43 PM)
I think there's some merit to that although that's pretty much what Orgeron wants to do every game anyways. I agree that it favors the Trojans because they are strong up front but it also makes you wish Morgan Breslin was available for this game too. He's the best pass rusher SC has and they could use him.
Oscar (South Gate)
What do you think of Matt Barkley's play so far with the Eagles?
Garry Paskwietz (5:45 PM)
It's tough for Matt but it's what the vast majority of rookie quarterbacks go through in the league. It hasn't helped that his practice reps have been very limited so far as the third string QB and that the offense is struggling as a whole.
What is going on with Christian Thomas? Does he have a shot to come back?
Garry Paskwietz (5:47 PM)
No, Christian took a medical redshirt with an injured hip and there hasn't been any talk of him coming back. A very under-rated loss for the Trojans.
cinemagraddad (los ángeles)
Josh Rosen. Does he pick Troy?
Garry Paskwietz (5:49 PM)
Too early to tell. Stanford was an early leader, then Cal. The Trojans got some positive feelings with the move to Orgeron and the verbal commit of his favorite target, wide receiver Shay Fields. Definitely a talented quarterback.
JD [via mobile]
Do you think we have a chance of recommitting Derek Calhoun if we hire a top HC???
Garry Paskwietz (5:50 PM)
It sounds like Calhoun is pretty set with ASU. I suppose you never say never but I don't see it happening at this point.
Ray (Los Angeles)
Why not play Chris Hawkins?
Garry Paskwietz (5:52 PM)
I think you do everything you can to keep the redshirt on Hawkins. My guess is the move to Shaw really cancels out any thoughts at all of Hawkins, which is a good thing for the Trojans. They have enough safeties to withstand Shaw going to corner.
Would Matt Leinart have any interesting in an assistant coaching position with the next head coach?
Garry Paskwietz (5:54 PM)
I could see Matt getting into coaching, he currently coaches his son's youth team, but I don't know what plans he has for his next move.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Is the Current USC Head Coach the Same Guy that Played the Coach for Mississippi in "The Blind Side"?
Garry Paskwietz (5:55 PM)
Yes, Ed Orgeron did a great job playing Ed Orgeron.
Garry Paskwietz (5:55 PM)
That's all the time we have for today. Thank you everyone for coming, we will see you next week.
