Edward Aschoff (1:00 PM)
Greetings from the Georgia Dome! I'm on site for tomorrow's SEC championship between the Tigers and the ... well Tigers! Let's get started
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Is USC's Clay Helton Will Muschamp's top choice to fill the vacancy at offensive coordinator?
Edward Aschoff (1:01 PM)
Rumors are flying all around about that opening, but Muschamp is on the road right now recruiting so don't expect anything to really pick up until after bowl season. Florida has already made it clear that it won't hire anyone until after bowl season. Helton is on the radar, but so are a few other guys in the Pac-12. This is Will Muschamp's most important hire.
RAY GORDON REID ( GAINESVILLE FLA32611 )
QUESTION TO ED ASHCHOFF AT 1.25 PM AUBURN OR MISSOURI
Edward Aschoff (1:02 PM)
I picked Auburn yesterday and I'm sticking with it. I think Auburn's running game proves to be too much yet again.
One of the questions that fans of the B1G ask is when is an SEC team going to come play int the cold and snow. If playing in the cold and snow is their measure of toughness, why do they play their championship game in a dome?
Edward Aschoff (1:05 PM)
Ha! Good point. LSU is traveling to Lambeau to play Wisconsin in 2016. Here's my question: Why is the Big Ten worried about what the SEC does? Win your own games in cold weather before you challenge the SEC to stop doing what's working for it.
How disappointed are you with the US draw in Soccer? Also, If the SEC had their own 4 team playoff right now in your power rankings, who walks away a winner?
Edward Aschoff (1:06 PM)
I'm beyond upset! How in the world do we get the Group of Death?? Ghana and Germany??? Portugal isn't too intimidating, but I'm not happy that they got lumped in either. ... I'll go Alabama. I know, I know. This team lost to Auburn and Mizzou's offense could give the Tide fits, but I still think Alabama has the best team in the SEC. Just lost at the worst possible time.
Jason (Columbia, Mo)
If Ohio State Loses will the SEC Winner Go to the BCS Championship?
Edward Aschoff (1:07 PM)
Cody (Austin (hiss))
Should A&M be seriously concerned about the offense's production from the last two games? Also, what should we take away from the defense's showing against Mizzou?
Edward Aschoff (1:09 PM)
It's clear that the last two defenses schemed Manziel and the Aggies perfectly. He had back-to-back terrible outings and both defenses defended the big play well. I think it's a concern for the bowl because those are two games that the Aggies' opponent can just watch over and over and over. As for Mizzou, I've liked this defense all year. The Tigers are second in the SEC defending the run and lead the league in rush defense in conference games. That defensive line is very talented, starting with Michael Sam. Lots of speed up front.
what kind of offense is muschamp wanting to run?
Edward Aschoff (1:10 PM)
One that will score points and generate yards ... Seriously, more QB run game with read-option and more tempo. Not necessarily uptempo but more tempo.
With the Vols recording a 3rd consecutive losing season, what differences did we see to keep hope alive for improvement next season?
Edward Aschoff (1:12 PM)
Attitude and development. This team got better as the season went on. It almost beat Georgia and was a fake jump pass against Vandy away from making a bowl game. This team has more passion than we've seen in the past and I think that Butch Jones' recruiting job has been excellent so far. But the coaches have to develop the guys they have. That didn't happen under Derek Dooley.
Derrin (Plano, TX)
What do you think about the job David Cutcliffe is doing at Duke? Was he let go prematurely during his tenure in the SEC?
Edward Aschoff (1:13 PM)
I know his family personally, so it's great to see him doing well. I went to school with his son. I believe he wasn't given enough time at Ole Miss once Eli left. It was sad to see him go when I lived there, but I'm very happy that he's landed on his feet at Duke.
Kevin (Columbia, MO)
Is there any chance, any at all, if Michigan State defeats Ohio State and Missouri defeats Auburn, that Alabama gets chosen over Missouri to play in the National Championship? (assuming FSU beats Duke)There would be rioting in the streets in Columbia, MO if that happened.
Edward Aschoff (1:15 PM)
I don't see that happening. It would be ridiculous if it did, but I just can't see voters putting Mizzou behind Alabama after it beats the team that beat Alabama. I wouldn't put Mizzou behind Bama. I have Mizzou in front of Bama in my poll. No way it happens.
I know it was lowly arkansas but how impressive was true freshman anthony jennings on that 99 yd drive? Also how important is it that hes getting to start a bowl game prior to next season?
Edward Aschoff (1:18 PM)
He didn't look like freshman to me. Someone check that kid's birth certificate! I was really impressed with how calm he looked. He went 99 yards and threw a beautiful 49-yard TD pass to win the game. You hate to see Zach Mettenberger go down like he did, but all this time to practice and play in the bowl game will go a long way to helping Jennings progress as the THE GUY. That's what he is now and next year.
Hi ED Mizzou is a more balanced team. You are going to be shocked again when Mizzou wins. Can Auburn stop Mizzou's offense and their wide receivers or great running backs? I think you and Auburn are living in the moment of that Iron Bowl, your thougths......Thanks!!!!
Edward Aschoff (1:21 PM)
I expect to see a great game in the Dome tomorrow. And I think you'll see a lot of points from both sides. Auburn can run a little better, but Mizzou can throw it better. It's going to come down to the defenses and Mizzou certainly has the advantage, but look at what Auburn did in the fourth quarter against Alabama. After that 99-yard TD pass, the Tigers allowed just 53 more yards and blocked a field goal. I think this defense steps up and forces pressure on James Franklin. Auburn's running game moves the ball a little more than Mizzou can handle. Auburn 31, Mizzou 27
Matt Rogan (Georgia)
Do you think that Connor Shaw has a chance to be drafted
Edward Aschoff (1:23 PM)
Certainly. He won't be a high draft pick, but he deserves to get drafted. He will be. I'm saying it now. He's the toughest player I've been around, he's smart with the football and he understands the game better than a lot of people give him credit for. I'd take him on my team to be a backup. He'll outwork guys.
Edward Aschoff (1:23 PM)
And he's a great, great leader.
Gamecock Fan (Chicago)
Dash, should any team in the SEC be more excited about the end of the BCS era than SC? Their 32 wins over the last 3 seasons tie them with LSU for 6th in the FBS and 2nd in the SEC, yet they're one of only two teams (the other is Boise St.) in the top 10 in the FBS to not go to a BCS bowl in the last two years and probably won't get one this year. Add to that the fact that they'll probably have to watch Clemson play in yet another BCS bowl this year and it's hard for Gamecock fans not to feel like the BCS system has left them out in the cold.
Edward Aschoff (1:26 PM)
If South Carolina has to watch Clemson play in a bowl game, then wow. But it could happen. I was actually talking to someone about that today. But South Carolina should be happy about the playoff. It benefits the SEC like no other. This year shows that two teams would definitely be in the playoff this year. Not SC, but imagine if SC were in Alabama's position.
jonathan (chattanooga TN)
Dan Mullen has really rasied the bar of expectations at MSU. what is needed to get over that bar? better recruits, better development, going to SEC East perhaps?
Edward Aschoff (1:32 PM)
He has to develop guys. That's the bottom line. He does have to recruit with Hugh Freeze but I think development is the key. We saw this team turn a corner late this year, but you can't live on the edge. He's done great things there, but you can't live on 6-8 wins. And Dan knows that.
Keenan (Atlanta, GA)
There's been a lot of talent coming out of the East Mississippi JC. Why haven't the Bulldogs and Rebels been able to keep more of these guys in state? Does this need to change, on a consistent basis, for one of these programs to elevate to the next level?
Edward Aschoff (1:33 PM)
Because once you get to the JUCO level everyone is looking at you and you have a chance to see the country by leaving your comfort zone. It's tough for those two schools to keep them once they start to really get on bigger schools' radars.
George (St Louis, MO)
Ed so you know every game is different right? When Missouri wins we don't want any apologies. you were on their bandwagon until you discovered that they could actually win the SEC....can't let the newbie do that now could you? Chris Low finally got it.
Edward Aschoff (1:34 PM)
Ha. I'm not messing with Auburn's mojo.
RJ (Peoria, IL)
Jumping the gun here, but what kind of season do you expect from the SEC east and west champs next year?
Edward Aschoff (1:37 PM)
With all the questions in both divisions, I would be shocked if the SEC champ didn't have two losses next year. I'm serious. I think the West will be very strong (again) and the East is a real toss-up.
Tyler (New York)
Better game: This year's Iron Bowl or last year's SEC Championship?
Edward Aschoff (1:38 PM)
Last year's SEC title game. That was so back-and-forth. The ending was certainly crazier this year, but I was never sure who was going to win the SEC title last year. I thought Bama had it after that AJ TD pass to Cooper.
Keith (Seattle, WA)
Ed, are you buying or selling PAC-12 stock right now? And will the playoff system lead to more OOC matchups between the two conferences, and major conferences in general?
Edward Aschoff (1:40 PM)
I'm buying it for now, but I want to see what happens on the field. I really hope that the SEC steps out of its comfort zone in the coming years and plays some real out-of-conference talent. But I'm selfish. I think you'll see some improvements in the schedules though.
Jeremy- Omega (Columbia)
Ed your argument on this SEC championship game for Auburn is very weak.......
Edward Aschoff (1:41 PM)
I like Auburn's running game to grind it out. Auburn has averaged 318 rushing yards per game and 286 in SEC games. These Tigers have 39 rushing touchdowns and are averaging 6 yards per carry. They run triple, read and power. Mizzou's defense is good, but I just don't see a defense being able to stop this running game right now.
If Michigan St only loses by a point and it's a low scoring game but Auburn convincingly beats Missouri, do you think Auburn should be in the BCS and number 2?
Edward Aschoff (1:44 PM)
I think it's going to be tough for either Auburn or Mizzou to make it to the BCS title game over an unbeaten OSU team. I get the strength of schedule argument and Auburn and Missouri have much better resumes than OSU, but the human voters like the fact that OSU hasn't lost a game since the Outback Bowl against Florida after the 2011 season. Auburn or Mizzou might jump the Buckeyes in the computers, but I don't think they will in the human polls. I have Auburn No. 2 in my poll ...
Sam Taylor (North Carolina)
Do you think Florida will be able to recover next year and make their way back to being bowl eligible?
Edward Aschoff (1:45 PM)
If the offense can move the ball and score points, yes. But I think that if WIll Muschamp is going to stay in Gainesville, the Gators have to make it back to the SEC title game. I think that's where Florida needs to be in order for Muschamp to return. That's a lot of pressure, but that's what it's like to coach at UF. No more excuses for the Gators.
John Deere (Farm in Missouri)
If Auburn has a weakness its their Passing Defense. How are they going to keep MU from making the big plays that they have all year.
Edward Aschoff (1:49 PM)
Mizzou is bad at defending the pass as well. Those Tigers are giving up 266 passing yards per game. So both teams have to stop the pass tomorrow. I think it starts up front. Getting pressure on the QB is essential and both teams have the ends to do that.
Strenght of Schedule? If Clemson ends up playing Alabama in the Orange Bowl, it will be the 3rd TOP 10 SEC team that they would have played. Alabama has played (2), Missouri and SC have played only (1). Add FSU and that will be (4) top ten teams for Clemson.
Edward Aschoff (1:53 PM)
Here are the number of ranked teams the top four SEC teams have played ... Alabama (4), Auburn (6 with Mizzou), Missouri (6 with Auburn) and South Carolina (3). That's not bad. Clemson has had a nice tough year, but don't discredit the SEC.
Scratches (B'more, MD)
Did Urban Meyer forget about 2006? Right now, he thinks an undefeated team should automatically make it to the BCSNCG over a one-loss SEC Champ. But in 2006, his one-loss SEC Champ Gator jumped an undefeated Boise St. Do we need to give him a history lesson?
Edward Aschoff (1:54 PM)
Selective memory? Hey, it's all about what will help you. In 2006, it helped Florida. In 2013, it hurts Ohio State.
Whats your opinion of Dak Prescott to this point?
Edward Aschoff (1:55 PM)
Tough competitor and just a tough guy overall. He played right after his mother passed and played well. He came in injured against Ole Miss and led them to victory with a monster fourth quarter and overtime performance. He does need to develop more, but he was very impressive this year. He can run you over but he has to be a more complete passer and a more polished passer.
Samuel (St. Louis)
So, what happens to the run game if MIZ is up by 10-14 late in the 3rd? then they have to rely on the pass and that just won't get it done. Auburn better hope they are within a TD late or they are in real trouble!
Edward Aschoff (1:56 PM)
Remember when Alabama was up 14? Auburn just kept running and running and eventually won the game.
atl terrell aka lexington steele (atlanta airport)
congrats on your Chargers making their FIRST ever trip to the state championship along with my Dores making their 4th trip, what's your prediction for both teams?
Edward Aschoff (2:00 PM)
Oxford High in the house!! Picayune won't know what hit it when the 14-0 Chargers take the field in Jackson! Proud of my high school and I am here to GUARANTEE a state title. If my soccer team could do it, then I know the football team can. As for the school down the street? My mother always told me that if you can't say anything nice ...
Edward Aschoff (2:01 PM)
Great chat guys! Tomorrow should be a blast! Have a great weekend!
