Garry Paskwietz (5:00 PM)
Good afternoon everyone, let's get started.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What College Football Bowl Game are you Looking Forward Seeing this Season?
Garry Paskwietz (5:01 PM)
I think that Rose Bowl is a real interesting match-up with two teams that play a physical style.
Alex (Los Angeles)
Any chance we get Morgan Breslin back for 12/21 (10 days away!!) Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl? Any others who might come back from injuries for the game?
Garry Paskwietz (5:03 PM)
There is a hope that Breslin would be available but it's too soon to tell. The two offensive linemen who got hurt against UCLA, Martin and Walker, are both out. There is a chance Silas Redd could play, Madden could be ready too but it's a high ankle sprain for Tre so that could be an issue.
dj robinson (vandenberg afb)
Will Ed Ogeron return to USC and will Clancy pendergast be usc's d coordinator next season
Garry Paskwietz (5:04 PM)
Right now it does not look like Orgeron will return. There have been some former players who tried to get him to come back and you can't rule anything out until another DL coach is named but it doesn't look like it will happen. It still looks like it will be Justin Wilcox as DC and Tosh Lupoi as the DL coach but nothing has been announced yet.
Tarik LaCour (Salt Lake City, Utah)
With the loss of Kennard and Breslin, do you see USC returning to a 4-3 defense, possibly moving Su'a Cravens to outside linebacker?
Garry Paskwietz (5:06 PM)
Sarkisian mentioned his defense as one that will have elements of both looks, the 4-3 and the 3-4. A key player will be JR Tavai as he showed the ability to seamlessly transition from being a down lineman to being a stand-up end. I think there are some capable candidates as OLB's with guys like Ruffin and Powell, I also think Scott Starr would make a terrific pass-rushing specialist like Breslin. I haven't heard any thoughts on Cravens to OLB but you have to at least wonder if they might take a look considering how they used Shaq Thompson at Washington.
Garry, CSS made a comment that he was going to assemble the best coaching staff in football but seems to be bringing in all of his old assistants from Washington. Are they really the best because Washington didn't come close to winning the P12 North?
Garry Paskwietz (5:10 PM)
it's a fair comment to make but i'll say two things. The staff isn't complete yet so give Sark a chance to fill out the staff before really judging things and, secondly, I think this defensive staff has a chance to be pretty good. The people at Washington that I've talked to say they really thought the defense was going in a good direction and they put a lot of credit to the tight-knit defensive staff. It will be really interesting to see what happens on the o-line. I've heard from multiple sources that the negotiations with Adrian Klemm were real last week and there was a legit chance that was going to happen. That certainly would have been a big hire at that spot, and with recruiting.
Jay (Los Angeles)
Buy or Sell:Steve Sarkisian will hire Lane Kiffin as offensive coordinator in USC...
Garry Paskwietz (5:11 PM)
I think it's safe to take that one off the board.
Bob (Westlake Village)
Garry , in your opinion will the team be more involved in playing against FSU in the Las Vegas Bowl then LY in the Sun Bowl vs. GT ?
Garry Paskwietz (5:13 PM)
You hear the talking point from players and coaches at practice this week about the desire to get the 10th win. If that motivation is truly there, that is a tangible goal that does seem to carry some significance. I still wonder about the impact of the Orgeron departure, that was a real emotional blow to the team and you just don't know how they will react. When asked what the team is playing for, several players have been clear to mention Orgeron in their responses.
Jay (Los Angeles)
Hi Garry, if you were USC AD, and you might only pick either Steve Sarkisian or Chris Petersen. You would pick....
Garry Paskwietz (5:16 PM)
i think a lot of Petersen and I would have been intrigued to see what he could do at SC but I've long thought Sark would be a good fit as head coach of the Trojans and would be very comfortable picking him. Going back to his days as an assistant coach under Carroll, he has just always struck me as someone who "gets" SC and is also a very good coach.
Hi Garry, do you think Chris Petersen's hire by Washington made Pat Haden "looks like an idiot"? What happened on the interview between Pat Haden and Chris Petersen?
Garry Paskwietz (5:21 PM)
I would certainly love to know what happened in those talks. Haden and Petersen would seem to be two very similar people and I would imagine an interview with the two of them would go very well. To have both of them walking away from the meeting basically saying it just wasn't the right fit, there is a lot of curiosity about what took place. I don't think it made Haden look like an idiot but since Petersen ended up replacing Sark at UW it will give USC fans a pretty clear comparison in the future years to judge if Haden made the right choice.
Mike (Thousand oaks)
Any news on Kennedy Polamalu accepting offer from UCLA, any reason Sark cannot fill out his staff quicker with Pola and/or other SC alum/Coaches to his staff?
Garry Paskwietz (5:24 PM)
Kennedy wanted to keep his family in LA since his son is a sophomore QB at Loyola and he wants him to remain at the school. Jim Mora approached him about going to the Bruins and Polamalu got a real good impression from Mora and things got wrapped up within a matter of days. Sark ended up bringing his RB coach with him from UW so it's unclear if there would have been anything for KP on Sark's staff. Part of the issue with the remaining spots getting filled is the unexpected delay that came with Justin Wilcox being considered for the head job at Boise State, along with buyouts for Wilcox and Tosh Lupoi (who is also rumored to be coming to SC).
Txtrojan (Dallas )
With Austin, Lobendahn and Poland filling 3 of the 4 early entry spots - what is plan B if the in home tonight does not land Pelon for the 4 and final spot?
Garry Paskwietz (5:25 PM)
The Trojans are making a push at Grossmont College WR Nick Kurtz, who is currently a commit to BYU.
SpinDome (Phi Delta Theta)
Garry - it's been too long. It seems like SC settled. Can you talk me off the cliff that Sark can really recruit Top 5 talent and "outcoach" Shaw, Mora, Graham and Petersen?
Garry Paskwietz (5:29 PM)
Good to hear from the Dome. I don't have any concerns about Sark's ability to recruit top talent to USC, he has always been strong on the recruiting trail and he'll be able to attract more elite players to USC than he did to Washington (and i thought he did a good job there). In terms of pure coaching, we're about to find out where he stands against those guys when he has a roster with SC talent. i think he'll do well, whenever I think of Sark I think of the 2009 Rose Bowl with Sanchez carving up Penn State in the 2nd half. That was all Sark at the controls and it was impressive to watch.
Kris (L.B CA)
Garry i hate the fact that people think Washington picking C.P. was a better hire than SC picking S.S. i truly believe Haden did a good job with his choice because USC is getting one hek of an offensive mind & one hek of a recruiter! What are your thoughts?
Garry Paskwietz (5:31 PM)
I agree. One of the problems of perception in this case is that there was a lot of talk about the "home run" hire and the reality is that Sark's record at UW wouldn't seem to put him in that range. But if you're talking about a guy who fits really well at SC, who can recruit and is a real good offensive mind, he is that guy.
Kory (Denver, Colorado)
Do you see any of these guys getting an SC offer now that we have a new coaching staff in place, Dwight Williams, Koa Farmer, Ainuu Taua, Rahshead Johnson, Jamardre Cobb, or Marquis Ware?
Garry Paskwietz (5:32 PM)
I would put Rahshaed Johnson as the most likely of that group. He was a commit to Sark at Washington and he would seem to fit a need for this class at receiver. One issue that could come into play is numbers as the Trojans already have a commit from Shay Fields and are still in it for two players who could end up at receiver, Adoree' Jackson and Miciah Quick.
Turner (Valencia, Ca)
Garry - when do you think we'll get a status on Tosh and Wilcox? We gotta have Tosh just for his recruiting alone!!
Garry Paskwietz (5:33 PM)
I don't think it will be long before there is an update one way or the other. Now that the Boise State spot has been filled, Wilcox will be able to turn his attention to his next move with Lupoi likely to come along as well.
I can comment on UW D with Wilcox and his staff after watching the team closely the last couple years. Very solid, gap oriented defense. Wilcox does not take many risks, which means less blitzing and relies on the D-line for pressure. Many times it would result in the bend, but not break against many teams. Wilcox completely shut down Stanford the last couple years, but never held it together against Oregon. Of course, USC was even worse against Oregon.
Garry Paskwietz (5:35 PM)
Appreciate those thoughts James. They are pretty consistent with what I've heard from people who have watched the Huskies closely. i get the sense folks up there are sorry to see this defensive staff go.
Dion, Marqise, and Josh (Los Angeles)
Should we stay or should we go?
Garry Paskwietz (5:36 PM)
stay, stay and stay.
How are we looking for Josh Rosen? If Sark decides that he doesn't care for Sills, is that really a huge blow for us?
Garry Paskwietz (5:38 PM)
if i had to guess right now, I think it comes down to the four California schools for Rosen and i think he gives all of them a long look. This is fine for the Trojans, Sark has a very good rep as a developer of quarterbacks as well as a great rapport with them. I don't doubt that Rosen will get a good feeling from him, it's just hard to know how that will stack up against his other choices. If Sark decides to focus on other quarterbacks besides Sills, both sides will be fine. Sills has recent offers from Michigan, Clemson and VTech.
Jonathan Lockett will be a trojan by the end of the night i guarantee it, but do you see any other prospects commiting before the first official visit weekend? & when do the EE come in for there OV? Thank you
Garry Paskwietz (5:40 PM)
I agree on Lockett and I think it would be a great pick-up. I'm not expecting any other verbals before the weekend but the EE's need to be signed by the 15th so anyone who is a target will likely be in attendance this weekend.
Stew Dog 55 (Canyon Country, Ca)
I read in some recruiting internet article today that SC is in good position to get Adoree, Ju Ju & Mama. Any truth to getting all 3?
Garry Paskwietz (5:42 PM)
i would say SC is in a very good position for JuJu and Mama but Adoree' is more of a case where the Trojans are in a group with other schools such as Oregon, LSU, Florida State, Florida and maybe even more. Adoree' doesn't appear to have things as finalized in his mind yet as the two others.
Kris (L.B CA)
Do u think that D. Bailey & H. Pullard will go pro? i hope not, because i believe we have a chance to be really special next season
Garry Paskwietz (5:44 PM)
Just based on listening to the players yesterday after practice I would say that Bailey is the more likely player to leave. I can make a real good argument for both players to stay since a fourth year of productive play would put them in elite company among SC defenders but it just seemed like Bailey was talking like a guy ready to make the move. We'll see.
Any news on TEs on the 2014 class? I'm sure ASJ winning the TE award makes Sark and USC a TE dream destination.
Garry Paskwietz (5:45 PM)
Bryce Dixon from St. Bonaventure is a top priority and it looks like a USC vs UCLA battle on this one. i agree that it's nice for Sark to walk into a TE's living room right now and point to a Mackey winner under his watch.
Garry Lockett is supposed to be announcing his commitment at 7pm on twitter, fair to say he is USC?
Garry Paskwietz (5:46 PM)
i would be surprised if he announces anywhere else.
Do you think that Biggie is still in play for us or is gone to Stanford?
Garry Paskwietz (5:48 PM)
Stanford is a legit offer for Biggie, one that was very important to his family. I get the sense SC will still be in his mix though, especially if JuJu ends up a Trojan and if the team shows some good progress next year.
lynn tanielu (samoa)
Talofa G.P.....your Gut feeling other the Lee leaving who else might be joining him as far as juniors gies?
Garry Paskwietz (5:50 PM)
Talofa Lynn. i mentioned a few posts ago that I could see Bailey going. I don't have anything firm to base that on, just a sense from the way he was talking about the process yesterday. i don't really have a sense on guys like Uko, Shaw or Pullard.
Oscar Batista (Irwindale CA)
Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush had obviously different pro careers, but it seems that Matt came out the winner just for being able to go back to campus proudly wearing his jersey and reaping the benefits of being one of Trojans greats. Do you sense that too?
Garry Paskwietz (5:52 PM)
Yes i do. it may not be the kind of thing that matters as much to a player when he is still in the league but once they are done, and as they get older, the desire to come back to a place where they were once so successful is a natural pull. You hear it time after time from players when they finally come back, they talk about how much they enjoy it. i think that's something Reggie will likely miss in future years, then again he may not, hard to know if he really cares either way.
Hey Garry,What type of offense do you think Sark will bring to the SC offense? Do you also think recruiting will be different positively?
Garry Paskwietz (5:54 PM)
He described it as an offense based on speed, balance and power. Those words sound good to me. I like the fact that he had an 1,800 yard rusher last year (who was a Doak Walker finalist) and the Mackey award winner, those speak well to power football and running the ball. Even though he goes no-huddle, it is still a run-first offense. Sark will be fine in recruiting, it's one of his strengths and he knows the So Cal area well.
Andrew Still (Ontario)
Can SC's defense be effective and shutdown Derek Carr or will this be a potential shoot out?
Garry Paskwietz (5:55 PM)
I think the SC offense is going to need to score some points because I think the Bulldogs certainly will. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see both teams in the 40's in this game.
Obet Martinez (Corona, CA)
Garry!! Who are your starting Offensive Linemen next year, incoming freshmen included, if you had to name a starting 5??
Garry Paskwietz (5:57 PM)
i'll guess Wheeler, Simmons, Martin, Walker, Tuerk. if Simmons can't go to start the year due to his knee injury, don't rule out one of the true freshmen (Talamaivao or Mama, assuming Damien ends up a Trojan).
MJ (Davis, CA)
What school do you think Chris Brown will end up at?
Garry Paskwietz (5:58 PM)
SC has long been the leader so I'll stick with the Trojans until proven otherwise.
Peter Ng (Palo Alto, CA)
Did USC interview any other "big" name coaching candidates during the searching process? We had been hearing Petersen or Del Rio a lot; but never heard of other names.
Garry Paskwietz (5:59 PM)
The five interviews were Sarkisian, Petersen, Del Rio, Sumlin and Orgeron.
Garry Paskwietz (5:59 PM)
thanks everyone, that's all we have time for today. We will see you all next week.
