Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:01 PM)
Thanks for joining our Ravens chat during Super Bowl week. It doesn't seem that long ago that the Ravens were preparing for the big game down in New Orleans. But we're here to talk about what's ahead for the Ravens. So, let's kick off the chat.
Rich (New Jersey)
Hi, If everything goes off without any problems, especially in regards to the weather, will the Ravens make a pitch for a future Super Bowl like the Giants / Jets did to get Super Bowl 48?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:04 PM)
I believe New York is a special case. I don't see cities like Baltimore, Boston, Washington or Philly getting a Super Bowl. Fans like warm-weather sites and it's what corporate sponsors want as well. It should be rotated between the likes of Miami, San Diego (if it gets a new stadium), New Orleans, Tampa and Phoenix.
Hey Jamison! Rick Dennison has been a O-line coach during his career, how would he work as QB coach and shouldn't Kubiak just have been QB coach as well as his duty as O-Coord?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:05 PM)
It's case where Dennison is best suited for offensive line coach. But Juan Castillo has that job. So, Dennison has the title of QB coach but he's more like an assistant offensive coordinator. Kubiak will have a lot of say with the quarterbacks.
Greg (MD) [via mobile]
Should the Ravens attempt to give Torrey Smith an extension?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:06 PM)
I believe so. Torrey Smith has only gotten better each year and he's a high-character person. There's no concern that he will slack off when he gets a big-money deal. Smith is in the last year of his deal, so it would be a good time to start talks.
Danny (Santa Fe, NM)
Will Kubiak help Ray Rices numbers?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:08 PM)
Not unless Kubiak can play center or right tackle. I'm joking, or at least I'm half joking. Kubiak has a history of strong running games. But the Ravens won't be able to run the ball unless they do something with the offensive line. It doesn't matter what scheme the Ravens run if the guys up front are knocking people off the ball.
Anthony @browsville tx. [via mobile]
Will there be any changes to your defense in terms of coaching staff
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:09 PM)
Secondary coach Teryl Austin went with Jim Caldwell and became the Lions' defensive coordinator. There's talk that Steve Spagnuolo, a consultant last year on the staff, may take over that role.
corey (baltmore )
is it finally safe to call the boldin trade a disaster ? and is this the first time a move really backfired on ozzie in regards to players leaving ?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:12 PM)
I think most people thought the Ravens would regret trading Anquan Boldin. And you're right, the Ravens usually know when to part ways with players, especially veterans. The only other instance where the Ravens should've kept someone was linebacker Jamie Sharper in 2002. The Ravens didn't have the cap room to keep him, but he had quite a productive career in Houston when he left the Ravens.
Hey JamisonWhat are the chances Leach is back for 2014 now that Kubiak has been hired as the OC?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:14 PM)
The chances are better because of his relationship with Kubiak, but I don't see the Ravens keeping Leach for a couple of reasons. The Ravens can gain much-needed $1.75 million in salary cap space by cutting Leach, and they need to see what Kyle Juszczyk can do. He's a fourth-round pick from a year ago. The Ravens can't keep him on the sideline for another season.
Rod (Baltimore) [via mobile]
Just want to play devil's advocate here, I love the Gary Kubiak hire but if he's successful isn't there a chance he could get another head coaching job and the Ravens will be looking for another O.C. in a year or 2 ...not to mention he'll probably take the staff he's bringing in with him. What your thoughts on this Jamison?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:16 PM)
That's not a concern. That's the best-case scenario. Unless you have a situation like Dick LeBeau in Pittsburgh, every coordinator is going to look for a head coaching job if he's successful. You want Kubiak to get that opportunity because that means the Ravens have a top-five offense in the NFL. You would prefer that scenario to Kubiak getting fired in a couple of years because he failed to turn around Joe Flacco and the offense.
Kevin (Baltimore) [via mobile]
If mike Evans does not fall to the ravens at pick 16 could you see us going after Hakeem Nicks in fa he seems to be the ideal missing piece that could out our offense back on track nxt season
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:17 PM)
Free agency happens before the draft. Nicks will be gone by the time the draft happens in May.
Matt D. (APG, MD)
Where do you weigh in on the "Harbaugh's hand was forced" discussing regarding the choice of Kubiak as OC?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:20 PM)
I don't believe Harbaugh was forced. Bisciotti and Newsome will express their opinions to Harbaugh and that could affect his decision. But Bisciotti isn't going to tell Harbaugh what to do. He'll let Harbaugh make his decision and do it his way. If it doesn't work out, then Bisciotti has the right to fire him. If Bisciotti is telling Harbaugh what to do and it doesn't work out, Bisciotti doesn't have the right to fire Harbaugh because he was only following orders. Based on what I know about Bisciotti and how he has handled his business in the past, he doesn't work that way.
What the status of Ed Reed? Is it possible for a return to Baltimore as a coach?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:21 PM)
It was tough enough for the Ravens to deal with his unpredictability as a player. The Ravens respect Reed as a player and person. But they're not willing to take on that headache.
Are there any coaches that Gary Kubiak might bring with him to Baltimore? Anyone in particular?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:22 PM)
His tight ends coach and possibly his running backs coach.
Joe Wedra (Calabash, NC)
I think the Ravens should take a look at Eric Ebron, TE, NC... Would it be a waste of a 1st rounder to take a TE? I don't think so!
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:24 PM)
Under that scenario, I don't see the Ravens signing Dennis Pitta long-term. It's hard for me to believe the Ravens would use a first-round pick on a tight end if they're willing to pay to re-sign Pitta to a contract that will likely average $5 million per season.
What's the deal with the offensive line coaches? Are Todd Washington and Andy Moeller both the assistant offensive line coaches?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:26 PM)
Good question. We asked Harbaugh about the status of his staff, and he didn't want to talk about who's staying and who's going. My guess is Moeller will be elsewhere. You can't keep him after stripping him of his title as offensive line coach. I believe Washington is in limbo right now, too.
draftravens [via mobile]
Do you think Kubiak will find more creative ways to use Kyle Juscyck?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:28 PM)
I could see Kubiak using Juszczyk like did with James Casey when he was in Houston. In 2012, Casey caught 34 passes and three touchdowns.
supermikey00 (Arlington VA)
Assuming K.Osemele is healthy, is he a better fit at RT or LG in Kubiak's zone blocking scheme?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:29 PM)
It really is going to depend on how the Ravens address offensive line in the offseason, more than the scheme itself. If it's easier to sign or draft a guard, Osemele is playing right tackle. If the Ravens add a tackle, Osemele is playing guard. I think Osemele is better suited at left guard, but it's in a state of flux right now.
Do you know anything about Flacco's work ethic? I heard it called into question this past year, though he also looked poorly coached in general.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:31 PM)
The Ravens would like to see Flacco take more initiative in getting guys together and working more as a unit in the offseason. They're hoping the sting of not making the playoffs will motivate him to do that. That's the only negative I've heard regarding his work ethic.
Drew Miller (Towson)
So, what's the deal with Castillo. Word is he was a major problem last year on the staff. Was one of the things Kubiak and Harbaugh had to agree on was that Castillo would have to stay?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:34 PM)
Unlike player contracts, deals given to coaches are guaranteed. Castillo is reportedly making over $1 million in 2014. The Ravens aren't firing him because that's a lot of money to pay someone not to coach. Also, Harbaugh feels very strongly that Castillo is one of the best teachers for offensive linemen. This is why he gets a second chance.
Do you think the Ravens could look to add Ben Tate...a MD local product to the running back mix?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:35 PM)
Ravens don't have the type of money to sign a guy like Tate after what they invested in Ray Rice. There have been reports for months that has linked the Browns to Tate.
Renn (Columbia, MD)
Who do you think is the mystery potential FA wide receiver is that Harbaugh and Ozzie teased the fans about earlier this month?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:36 PM)
The best fit would be someone like Eric Decker from Denver. I'm just not sure the Ravens are going to be wiling to spend the type of money it will take to get him. The Ravens aren't in cap jail, but they have to be prudent with their decisions.
Was Kyle Shanahan offered a job and he turned it down to try and get a OC job? That's kind of what it sounds like.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:37 PM)
My guess is the Ravens were trying to convince Kyle Shanahan to be the QB coach. But he didn't want to take a reduced role. It may be the right call for Shanahan. He has a shot to be the OC with the Browns.
Alex (Charlotte) [via mobile]
What's your take on the Harbaugh Ozzie Mike Preston who was responsible for the Kubiak hire?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:43 PM)
I addressed this earlier, but I will recap. This is what I believe: Harbaugh ultimately made the call. Do I believe Newsome and Bisciotti shared their opinions and offered advice? Absolutely. But, if Bisciotti ordered Harbaugh to make that hire and it doesn't work out, how can the owner truly evaluate the coach? He was only doing what the owner told him. That being said, by not being heavy-handed, Bisciotti has every right to fire Harbaugh if it doesn't work out because it was a decision that Harbaugh made.
Will (Baltimore) [via mobile]
What are the chances Ed Dickson gets resigned?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:44 PM)
Dickson doesn't believe he'll be back. When a player is pessimistic, so am I.
Do you think Suggs will still be a Raven next year (by restructuring his contract), or do you think we will see him on another team?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:45 PM)
Suggs admires Ray Lewis so much that I think he'll try to follow in his footsteps. I feel Suggs will reach an extension so he can finish out his career with the Ravens. Of course, this is just my opinion and I've been wrong before.
Say what you want about Flacco but he wins the in postseason. The Bengals will NEVER win the Super Bowl because Dalton can't win in the playoffs. The Ravens have a 100% chance of winning another Super Bowl before the Bengals even have a shot at the AFC Championship Game.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:46 PM)
The frustrating part for the Bengals is they have all the pieces in place except at quarterback. At all the other positions, they have as much talent or more talent than the Broncos and Seahawks.
Kevin (Baltimore, MD)
What do you envision for Aaron Mellette next season?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:48 PM)
He's a developmental player. Best chance for him is to make the team as the No. 4 or No. 5 WR.
do you think Jacoby Jones will take a pay cut or will he be elsewhere next year?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:48 PM)
Jones is a free agent. He'll go where the money is.
Are the Ravens going to look at finding a replacement for Gino? It seems like he was consistently overmatched physically last year
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:49 PM)
Newsome essentially said the same thing at the State of the Ravens press conference. He named bulking up the interior of the offensive line as a priority. That means upgrading a center.
in the state of the ravens address both ozzie and john looked at each other and smiled about going after a reciever... do you see that cming via the draft or free agency? and what about the recievers on the team do they feel like brown mellete and smith cant get it done? plus jacoby MAY be back...
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:51 PM)
The Ravens always have contingency plans. If there is a free-agent WR that they like, the Ravens will target him and try to get a deal done. But, if all the WRs they like are too expensive, the Ravens will look to the draft. This is how I see it unfolding.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:52 PM)
Thanks for all of the great questions. This was the best chat session we've had. Thanks for stopping by and hope you enjoy the Super Bowl. Talk to you next week.
