Katie Strang (3:00 PM)
We are 48 hours from the trade deadline, people! Lots to discuss!Let's get down to business...fire away!
Adam (New York)
What moves do you see the Panthers Making? Also what is it going to take for a team to get Vaneck?
Katie Strang (3:02 PM)
I think Brad Boyes will garner some interest as an option on the wing for teams that may miss out on the marquee rentals like Vanek and Moulson. Have to imagine that a team will be required to give up a first-round pick, plus either a prospect or roster player to acquire the former
Is it back to Talbot next game for the Rangers?
Katie Strang (3:03 PM)
Not so fast, though these pair of games have not been Lundqvist's finest. I thought the Rangers made some glaring mistakes in their own end the past few games, though. Regardless, he'll have a few days to rest and regroup before the next game on Wednesday against the Leafs.
Dom (Brooklyn, NY)
Hi Scott? What moves does Ray Shero pull off for the Penguins before the deadline?
Katie Strang (3:05 PM)
Hey Dom- Sorry to disappoint that I am no Burnside, but I will try to live up to his legend regardless and answer your question. Sounds as if Shero is in heavy on Kesler, with his sights set on acquiring the Canucks center to improve the team's depth down the middle. Even if they are able to swing it, I don't see the Pens stopping there. They still need to address some scoring on the wing with Dupuis on the shelf and I don't think it would be the worst idea to acquire some goaltending help, either.
Katie, do you anticipate the Rangers taking the same stance with Staal next year as they currently are with Callahan i.e. long term deal for a tough gritty leader but with a vast injury history?
Katie Strang (3:07 PM)
I think they will probably have to have a really honest conversation with him at the outset of the season -- maybe even before -- and see if he is committed to re-signing in NY long term or if he is keen on joining his brothers in Carolina. No one could blame him for the latter.
JP (San Antonio)
Hi Katie, thank you for all your great work. What are you hearing or what are your feelings regarding the Pat Lafontaine situation in Buffalo? Are things really that bad in Buffalo's front office or is Patty really hard to work with?
Katie Strang (3:09 PM)
Thanks JP. Still really hard to get a handle on what's going down in Buffalo, but I certainly do not buy the excuse that he is simply missing his old post at the NHL. Guy has roots in Buffalo and he must know that leaving so abruptly -- his second hasty exit as an executive -- would likely give any team pause about hiring him in a similar capacity in the future. Must have been something pretty serious to make him want to leave.
Michael B. (NYC)
What are the odds that Cally gets signed before the trade deadline? What will the terms be?
Katie Strang (3:10 PM)
I wish I had a better handle on it, but I don't. The two sides have made some tangible progress, both on the term and money front, but the two sides still have a ways to go on $$$. Seems hard to believe that a deal can't be achieved here but neither side sounds overly optimistic. Perhaps that is just gamesmanship. My gut feeling is that he stays.
In this week's power rankings, you mention Jon Cooper (Lightning) as the "odds-on favorite for the Jack Adams Award". Are you forgetting the work that Patrick Roy has done in CO? Far more impressive than what Cooper has done in TB.
Katie Strang (3:12 PM)
You have a point here, and I wrestled that while I was writing that. I do think Patrick Roy has a good chance of winning the Jack Adams, and rightfully so, as he has executed a dramatic turnaround with the Avs. Both coaches have been tremendous.
Andrew MacDonald, one of the most underrated D-men in the league in my opinion, has been mentioned in lots of trade rumor the past week. Any chance my Flyers make a run at him, I figure at his modest cap hit of 550k, we have a good chance?
Katie Strang (3:13 PM)
I think a lot of teams will be making a run at him, and the Flyers should definitely be one of them. Get the sense that Snow will likely take MacDonald and Vanek down to the wire, though. Lot of pressure on him in the next few days to fetch monster returns for those two rental players.
what are the realistic trade returns for the rangers in any Callahan trade?
Katie Strang (3:14 PM)
Considering that they are in the thick of the playoff race in the East, I'd imagine they'd want a roster player that could help them in return.
Do you see a scenario where the Rangers could send Callahan and other assets for Chris Stewart and Martin St. Louis? What needs to happen here.
Katie Strang (3:16 PM)
Both players? Absolutely not. They could trade Callahan for Stewart straight-up, but certainly not with St. Louis. Rangers would definitely have to throw in a prospect and/or pick to sweeten the pot
Scott (Long Island, NY)
What do you expect the Islanders to receive for Vanek? Will they acquire any players that can play now?
Katie Strang (3:17 PM)
First-round pick and a mid-grade prospect. If I were Snow, I'd be looking to add a goaltender via trade since there are some solid goaltenders on the market right now.
I will (once again) clear my schedule from 8-3 pm on wed and will ignore any and all responsibilities during this time. Will I be disappointed? Or will this years trade deadline deliver the goods?
Katie Strang (3:18 PM)
If any trade deadline is going to be worth watching, I'm betting this will be the one. Have never seen this sort of talent become available like this season, and with so few teams out of it, there is plenty of demand as well. Should make for an exciting day on Wednesday. Assuming we will have an all-day live chat over here so make sure to join us!
Submitting early: Since 1998, when the current format was introduced, the U.S men's and women's olympic hockey teams have combined for one gold medal. The U.S. Paralympic sled hockey teams has won two gold medals in that same time, and will be going for #3 in the coming weeks. A couple of mentions in the next two weeks would be a great way to spread the word of the country's last chance at hockey gold in Sochi
Katie Strang (3:19 PM)
Great point and good luck to the U.S. sled hockey team members!!!
Robert. Bronx, NY [via mobile]
If Callahan is traded, where does he end up?
Katie Strang (3:22 PM)
I think that St. Louis and Tampa would still be the most likely landing spots for him as a rental. If he hits the free market as a UFA in July, I see Buffalo awarded him with the lucrative, long-term contract that he seeks
hey katie!have you heard anything about the rangers interest in matt moulson at all?
Katie Strang (3:23 PM)
I think there would definitely be interest there, but with the Rangers not quite looking like a team ready to compete with the elite teams in the league, they may not feel they can justify giving up a high pick to get him
Do you see the Avalanche making any moves? If so who do you think they are targeting?
Katie Strang (3:25 PM)
Sounds like there is at least the possibility that Statsny gets moved if he doesn't re-sign. But it doesn't sound like they are in the rental market. I'd expect them to be more interested in a hockey trade
Darren (New Jersey)
Do you buy into Marty moving on by Wednesday? He's been vocal but Lou certainly has been tight lipped all season about Marty
Katie Strang (3:27 PM)
Lou keeps his cards so close tot he vest, so it is almost impossible to predict what he will do each year, but I have to believe that Brodeur is eager to explore opportunities to get playing time elsewhere. As many others have said, I think he'd make a nice fit in Minnesota
Mike (Columbus OH)
Do you think the Blue Jackets need to be buyers or stand pat with their young stars?
Katie Strang (3:28 PM)
Or sellers? The answer to that question may be decided in the next two days as they have a back-to-back set heading into the deadline. Teams have called on Gaborik, despite the injury. There is plenty of interest there
Hi Katie, do you think that Kesler would have interest is being the #3 center in Pittsburgh? Isn't that why Staal was traded?
Katie Strang (3:29 PM)
Really sounds like he wants out of Canada. And considering the type of team Pittsburgh has, yes I think he'd welcome that move.
As of right now: Who wins the Central Division Finals: Blackhawks or Blues?
Katie Strang (3:29 PM)
Katie, Sabres fan here. I just got back from a week's vacation on an island with no internet. Did I miss anything?
Katie Strang (3:30 PM)
Turn around and head right back to the beach my friend. You could benefit from another week's worth of pina coladas.
Can the Tavares injury be seen as a perverse positive for the Isles? Nelson, Strome and Lee are all now taking on much bigger roles for the team, possibly a chance to jump start their NHL careers. Strome and Lee dont have much left to prove in the AHL.
Katie Strang (3:31 PM)
An unfortunate and devastating injury for Tavares and a debilitating blow for the Isles, but they will likely end up with a higher draft pick as a result.
RyanC. (Grand Rapids)
I hear Dustin Byfuglien is available for a 1st and an offensive roster player, and my Wings may be interested. But at this point is Byfuglien a 1st/2nd/3rd defenseman pairing or is he a winger?
Katie Strang (3:34 PM)
Guess it depends on who is asking, and maybe that sort of versatility is appealing to a team that has been absolutely ravaged by injuries. To be honest, I don't see him as a good fit there. I'd keep an eye on Detroit when it comes to Livonia native Ryan Kesler though. Glad to get some GR love, by the way. Miss my people!
Is Capuano back for another season with the Isles?
Katie Strang (3:35 PM)
After last night's third-period implosion -- which has been a problem far too often for the team -- you'd have to think they might reconsider the direction for next year. Someone has to be held accountable
Suburban Rhythm (Pittsburgh)
Assuming Pittsburgh ends up with some pieces needed (RW, 3rd like grit) after Wednesday...do they need Letang in the playoffs to win a Cup? He's been terribly inconsistent all year when in the lineup...but he brings a skillset that only E Karlsson matches in the league.
Katie Strang (3:36 PM)
I think they can still be an elite team without him, but his offensive acumen certainly adds another dynamic, particularly on the power-play. To me, the play of Marc-Andre Fleury will be far more important in the post-season.
Canucks are really on the slide, why does Torts still have a job. The team is playing terrible, not to mention his embarrassing behavior in the Flames incident. Why don't they just cut him loose and let Mike Sullivan take the reins from here on out, or find someone new?
Katie Strang (3:37 PM)
Believe he is on a five-year deal. Not even through the first season. That's pretty early, and mighty costly, to cut bait this soon
Are you surprised of the lack of deals so far? Other then the Ryan Miller trade no big moves have been made. Given the amount of names supposedly on the market I would have thought there would be more deals.
Katie Strang (3:39 PM)
No, the big chips usually have a domino effect but Miller is a goaltender so that's a whole different beast. Once we see movement on Vanek, I think we'll see a flurry of activity that follows.
Do you see the Isles moving Nabokov to a team needing a backup goalie, like a Pittsburgh?
Katie Strang (3:39 PM)
No. Too many other goaltenders available that are better, and younger, than Nabokov
What moves do you see the Bruins making>
Katie Strang (3:41 PM)
Sounds like they really want a left-handed defenseman. WOuldn't be surprised to see Andrew MacDonald end up in Boston
Katie why won't Snow go out and take a chance on Fasth, Neurvith, or another young goalie? At this point it cant hurt to take a chance and see how one of them pans out in an Isles uniform. James Reimer would be an interesting option as well.
Katie Strang (3:41 PM)
He should, I agree, especially since he has such a difficult time signing players as free agents.
If you had to say right now, where do you see Vanek and Macdonald at 3:01 PM on Wednesday?, and for who?
Katie Strang (3:43 PM)
Vanek- LAMacDonald- BOS or ANA
Do you predict any goalie moves before deadline ends?
Katie Strang (3:44 PM)
I imagine Halak will be dealt again before the 3 p.m. deadline. And my gut tells me that Brodeur will as well
Will Daniel Sedin's injury affect the possibility of Kesler getting dealt?
Katie Strang (3:45 PM)
Yup, but not in the way you might initially think. If he's going to be out for a significant amount of time, you'd have to think the Canucks will consider punting the season and getting the best return for Kesler possible
Katie Strang (3:46 PM)
Ok all we will end there today. See you back on Wednesday!
